Obama says he's better candidate versus McCain

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor February 8, 2008 01:26 PM

The post-Mitt Romney withdrawal, John McCain presumptive GOP nominee spin continues apace from the Democratic contenders.

Barack Obama's campaign just sent reporters a memo that outlines its case that he would be the strongest candidate in November against McCain.

It cites a Time magazine poll that shows that Obama would fare better against the Arizona senator than Hillary Clinton, exit polls that show Obama doing much better than Clinton among independent voters in key swing states, and vote totals from Super Tuesday in which Obama collected more votes in traditionally Republican states than the top two Republicans did.

The memo also quotes Matthew Dowd, the chief strategist for President Bush's campaigns, who said on National Public Radio today that Obama would be a tougher matchup for McCain than Clinton.

"The other thing that I think John McCain has going for him is if Hillary Clinton wins the nomination. I know there's a lot of conservatives out there that said they wouldn’t vote or would vote for her, but I think she's the most unifying force for John McCain out there right now, not himself,” Dowd said, according to a transcript provided by the Obama campaign.

Dowd also said, "I think if you gave the strategists and people around John McCain some truth serum and asked them to say who they want to run against, in a minute they'd say Senator Hillary Clinton. They think that she's polarizing; she'd motivate and unite the base of the Republican Party. She's not a generational difference and a change of a figure, she’s a bit of throwback to the past, like to a degree he is. Against Senator Obama it’s a much more difficult task. It would be a generational campaign, the new versus the older."

  1. Go Huckabee!! Hopefully the main stream media will take a hint that YOU are the people's choice. Accomplishing what Huckabee has accomplished with the main stream media against him, his own party against him and working with donations provided by the working men and women of America, it is amazing at what he has accomplished. It thrills me to think that we might be able to someone elected that can actually, get something done with out spending millions and millions of dollars.

  1. Carrie, you are SO delusional if you think Huckabee has a chance. He's not conservative, the media has given him a pass but would destroy him on ethics violations if he were the nominee, and his one stance with the fair tax is ludicrous - he could NEVER abolish the IRS. To think he could is immature politically and giving people who vote for him and support him false hope. If Mitt Romney couldn't get momentum to beat McCain and the MSM and the pundits and the independents and the liberal-crosssovers, Huckabee sure isn't going to get the nomination.
