Obama says sweep shows appetite for change

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor February 9, 2008 10:41 PM

Barack Obama declared tonight that his clean sweep of the Democratic contests shows that Americans are ready for change.

"People want to turn the page. They want to write a new chapter in American history," Obama said. "Today, voters from the West Coast to the Gulf Coast to the heart of America stood up to say. 'Yes we can.' "

Obama received a raucous reception at the Democratic Party dinner in Richmond, Va., more enthusiastic than the one received by Hillary Clinton.

Obama won clear victories in Nebraska and Washington state, and is the projected winner in Louisiana. The Politico website reports that Obama won an overwhelming victory in the caucuses in the US Virgin Islands. It says that Obama got 90 percent, compared to 8 percent for Hillary Clinton.

  1. 90% to 8%?

    Good for him!

That's the kind of numbers he needs. If the two of them are tied going into the convention, Mrs Clinton has a huge advantage.

By the way, has anyone else but me noticed how undemocratic the concept of super-delegates is?

  1. I just have to say that the Nebraska folks I talked to while doing volunteer phonebanking for Barack Obama are the NICEST people I've ever encountered! I have talked to sweet, kind, friendly people in North Dakota, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, and Louisiana. But EVERY single person I called in Nebraska was friendly, had questions, was conversational and just plain NICE! I am so proud of our democracy.

  1. I voted last night. I was the only black person I know that voted for Clinton. I like to think that after all the reading and research I did, I made the most informed decision for me. Unfortunately the majority of my friends made their votes based solely on skin color. This is a very unfortunate trend for our country. I like Obama and will not be upset if he is the nominee. He will have my support 100%. I just hope that the decision on who should be the next president, whether Clinton or Obama doesn't come down to the color of their skin.

  1. Ok first of all....was there some applause and enthusiasm meter during the dinner whereby you can say that people were more enthused with Obama? C'mon now. Hillary will take this contest on the basis of experience, honest to goodness well thought out plans for change-- Unfortunately this has become a race based on race and gender.....this is truly the split. In terms of making history people have said either way, either candidate will make history....however, there have always been men as presidents....men, black or white have had rights prior to women, such as voting rights, even the ability to enter the work force. Clearly the change in this next presidency and clearly the history being made will be more evident by electing the FIRST woman president who actually has the experience and the credentials. I fully understand why each political new media plays this down....they have always played down the strength, conviction and determination of the woman, from corporate amercia to the polical stage. Men are voting for men, African american are voting for african american. Someone recently said, and I think it is worth thinking about.....Hillary will do more for the african american community than Barack will do for women. Think about it....
As far as the indenpendent vote....McClain allegedly has picked up these voters....do you really think Obama is going to steal away these indenpendents in the general election as a Liberal? It dosent make sense. Clearly, independents are with McCain because they are more moderate than Liberal.....Clinton has a greater chance at snatching these away. Then there is topic of them both on the same ticket. Finally on a Sunday morning news political show....words of sound reason across the whole panel....if a combined ticket, Obama would have to yield on the basis of experience. They are finally coming around to this reality of experience regarding Hillary. We know that he is a great motivational speaker, but he just needs to get experience. The boys club across america will fight having a man just a notch below a woman....but it is what makes sense due to experience and know how. Obama as president is best realized down the road.
