Paul claims delegates in West Virginia

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor February 5, 2008 05:22 PM

The West Virginia Republican convention, the first contest of Super Tuesday, gets curiouser and curiouser.

Ron Paul's campaign claimed late this afternoon that it had secured three of the 18 delegates through a deal with Mike Huckabee to help put him above the 50 percent threshold.

John McCain's camp had already claimed credit for throwing its support to Huckabee to stop Mitt Romney from winning the 18 delegates. McCain finished third, and Paul fell off the ballot after finishing fourth in the first round of voting. Romney led the first round of voting, but only had 41 percent.

"Our goal is to secure as many delegates to the national GOP convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul as possible," said Paul 2008 campaign manager Lew Moore. "Securing three delegates in West Virginia is an important step in that direction. We plan on locking up more delegates before the day ends."

But Huckabee's campaign did not confirm any such deal with Paul.

Instead, in response to Romney's claims of a backroom deal, the Huckabee camp told him to stop whining. "Two days ago, the New York Giants pulled off the greatest upset in Super Bowl history," Huckabee said in a statement issued by his campaign. "Today, as pundits write my political obituary, we won a key Super Tuesday victory."

  1. Ya, Huckabee won because of back room deals. He couldn't win it on his own merit. If I was Huckabee, I wouldn't accept the win! What a JOKE!!

I am a democrat, but can't help but see how Romney got screwed. Way to Go WV.

  1. What a disgrace! I thought "every vote counted". Apparently it does, but not for whom it was cast by ballot.

  1. I hope this turns out to be factual. Ron Paul had quite a few delegates supporting him in West Virginia. Also, eventhough it seems to have escaped most media coverage there is still a west Virginia primary on May 13th, where the rest of the WV GOP delegates will be decided.

  1. The GOP establishment screwed Ron Paul over in Louisiana by fiddling with the rules and not counting all the votes. If they had done their job properly, Paul would have come in first, not second. See the press release on the campaign website for details.

So I have no sympathy for Mitt Romney. He deserves to feel what it's like to be screwed over too.

  1. I used to think that Ron Paul's people were idealists. Now I see that their votes are for sale. I'm disappointed.

  1. This politics at its finest. The way it really works behind closed doors. Give a little to get a little. Besides, the party establishment hates Paul and Huckabee. I have no problem making common cause to fight the authorities who wish to control the process, limit the choices to one or two establishment men, and pick the party candidate for us. Besides, if Romney and McCain can be locked out of a win, then Ron Paul wins along with Huckabee. I know much of the MSM will ignore the fact that Ron Paul was the actual kingmaker in WV (with McCain), but it is the delegates that matter.

Moreover, I salute the Huckabee campaign being smart enough to beat Romney to the punch. I am sure the Romney campaign was so arrogant it never occurred to them that they might have to approach the Ron Paul supporters and offer a deal. If RP does not win or is not the leader in delegates, then a brokered convention makes the delegates of Huckabee, Paul, and the other “non-leaders” more valuable than their actual numbers. It is the last drop of water that makes the cup overflow.

  1. Truthfully, we are all getting screwed if any of the establishments choices win. They are all backed by neoconservatives. Ron Paul is the only candidate in my view who can resist the temptations presented by the neoconservative pundits. Do yourself a favor and lookup neoconservatism, Wikipedia is a good reference for such terms. You will then see why their is currently no difference between the main stream medias promoted candidates, democrat or republican. Then if you really want to do some digging look for information regarding the relationship between the Bush's & Clinton"s.

  1. This is all a game anyhoot. I am not for McCain but voted for him because I want to see a starch war supporter against an anti-way Democrat. I want to see how the county votes. If McCain wins all must shut up because they had a chance and are getting what they deserve. Four more years of this war

  1. Doesn't seem like the deal is that outrageous. He had representatives in the caucus and he turned them into representatives in the national election. Sounds like government by representation at work.

  1. The flawed primary system is why Ron Paul isn’t doing better…

In my state of Florida, If you are an Independent (as half of registered voters are), you are NOT permitted to vote in primary elections. So, in my opinion as an independent the primary’s are a big joke, and have no real credibility. I have seen twice as many Ron Paul signs as any other candidates signs here in Florida and yet he got 2% in the primary here… I rest my case.

  1. Our candidate is always on the short end of the stick and idealism takes the back seat to defending the Constitution.
    Go Dr. Paul!

  1. In a caucus I think after the first ballot is cast and one (or more) of the candidates doesn't get a certain percentage of votes, they are dropped off and everyone who voted for them gets to recast their vote. If I was voting for Ron Paul and he was dropped I might not recast my vote. However, if Ron Paul then supported another candidate for any reason, I would give that candidate my vote. Nothing underhanded about it.

  1. After Tuesday, the Ron Paul Revolution might have run out of steam, but it will be remembered for the absolute dedication and financial generosity of its supporters. Yes, they were idealistic because they were firmly devoted to his unique message of reclaiming America from the clutches of greedy corporatists, globalists and war profiteers. This is why Paul could amass the largest budget of any candidate in the shortest amount of time, and he will will end his lucrative campaign still very much in the black.

  1. Ben... You are reading it wrong.

Paul would have had 0 delegates.

Instead, he made a deal to get 3.

Sounds more like McCain's votes were for sale.

Posted by Clayton February 5, 08 08:16 PM
  1. We had enough votes to swing it to either Huckabee or Romney. We knew McCain would go for Huckabee for strategy reasons. Since in the 2nd round of voting, we couldn't vote for Paul, we did the best we could to win us delegates.

  1. "I used to think that Ron Paul's people were idealists. Now I see that their votes are for sale. I'm disappointed."

Ben - this is a game of inches. Paul knows what he's doing here. Better to get 3 delegates instead of none. Paul was clearly losing here in WV. Should he have gotten nothing? This Huckabee "victory" means that McCain's and Romney's momentum is slowed a little bit. Preventing McCain from locking up the nomination and letting the race drag on plays into Paul's favor. Remember - as the race drags on, Paul's views become more sharper and clearer. McCain & Huckabee don't have the money or grassroots to continue through the end.

  1. Is this fair? Yes, it is. These are the rules the Republican Party of West Virginia set for choosing its delegates. The candidates played the game that was set before them. If you're a Republican living in West Virginia and don't like the results, tell your local Republican Party establishment that you'd rather they did it differently next time. If you're a Republican living elsewhere and you don't like the results, tell the national Republican Party establishment that you'd rather see things done differently. Personally, I think "winner take all" is a terrible policy. It marginalizes good candidates (Thompson, Hunter, Paul) too easily. "Party unity" and "mandates" are overrated.

  1. This whole election process stinks...I am from the Kansas City, Mo. suburbia "Sugar Creek". I went to my regular polling place to vote for Ron Paul and the church was closed up, where I had voted for the last 4 years had moved to the city hall. I should not have assumed they would have moved and paid more attention to my voter card that I received in the mail. No body knows about Ron Paul the big media just does not mention him in a good light if they mention him at all. I was at leat able to convince 3 other people to vote for him. I really hope the USA is not going to fall because most of the people still don't get what is happening to all of us. We are not given a fair choice or choice at all.

  1. The way I read and interpreted the situation is that Romney won the first ballot with Huckabee in second and McCain in third. McCain couldn't have his "main" competition win so his votes went to Huckabee who was written off along with Ron Paul long ago. However, even with McCains votes Huckabee didn't get the needed amount to beat Romney. He needed just a little bit more and that is where Ron Paul came in. Now Ron Paul apparently got ten percent in the first ballot and was then not on the second ballot. If you notice McCain still had a few votes, not sure how to interpret that. The biggest winner in this is Huckabee as he beats Romney and wins some delegates and attempt to reestablish himself. The second biggest winner is Ron Paul as he was able to capitalize and get some delegates. The third biggest weiner is McCain because Romney didn't win.

  1. None of the dummies in this country are even vaguely aware of what big brother, the Dems, Bankers and the GOP has in store for them. They - the people - will vote themselves into slavery.

John McCain the (cowardly) war hero that sold the enemy our secrets for medical care four days after he arrived at the Hanoi Hilton (Google veterans against John McCane), or Mitt Romney that will consult with his lawyers, Hillary Clinton that has experience with a health plan that was a disaster and has never done a thing in her senate seat in NY, or maybe Ron Paul who is the only person that is not in bed with the establishment and the only honest person in the campaign.

The bankers know you all will vote the way the media says and believe anything. The average American thinks at the 10 year old level and that is a overstatement, more like 6 or 7 year old. You will soon know what slavery is – RFID implants, Cashless –debit card – society. And RFID “chipped” national ID cards.

I have my way out, but you all will soon be surfs attending the bankers and politicians to do their bidding..

Ron Paul has money and the independent and popular vote with much more support to come, the party will soon see Ron Paul is the only chance to beat Obummer and Hellory. Conquer and divide is our plan as we educate each person about the only patriot now for president Ron Paul. We will stop the Romulians and McLaims.

I'm very sad about this. I rather wanted there to be one honest man in the race. It seems to me that all the politicians-as-usual, which now includes Ron Paul, are all ganging up on Romney.

Maybe it's Romney who the solution and not part of the problem -- as I had prematurely supposed. I'm going to have to write him a HUGE apology for all the nasty things I said about him.

I am just glad to see it was someone else even though I don't agree with it.

Amazing how the people up front are the same people the media said a year ago were "front runners".
As long as Americans keep letting the media and corporations choose their candidates without researching for themselves, we will continue to end voting for the Douchebag or the Turd Sandwhich.

  1. We all know the rules, so live by them and don't complain. Just because Romney has all the money in the world doesn't mean he can buy any election. I'm happy that the Huckabee and Paul camps could come together and make sure that we saw democracy in action for the underdog instead of the "clear winner" as declared by the "fair and balanced media." People are taking back their country by actually caring about the process and I'm happy. We are sick of the blank check other fellow Republicans have given Bush. People count more than paper money.
What about the soldiers who can't be at these caucuses and primaries? The FEC reported that more active duty military members gave to Ron Paul than any other Republican candidates combinded (McCain, Romney, and Huckabee). So I will vote my conscious every time and vote for those who could donate but couldnt participate.

  1. Dianna...thanks for your comment, but that isn't quite the truth of it.

The "Network" relies on its bias just as any (even Aaron Russo's "America: Freedom to Fascism") publication does. But, Ron Paul doesn't ask America to listen to him regarding how to run the country now does he. He asks every American to look toward the Constitution of the United States for guidance, of which, he has pledged to be faithful to as our representative in government. That's all...just adherence to the Constitution...on everything.

Quite frankly, he's simply the only candidate with such a passion about what has been fought for so vigilantly by our ancestors...civil liberties, limited taxation (bye-bye IRS), a strong national defense, etc. Please take the time to read up on his campaign and views regarding the direction of our country and you'll be hooked....no mainstream media hype here...just good ole' fundamental freedoms we've all come to enjoy and perhaps taken for granted for so long.

If you want anyone or anything to stop, you might point that "All Caps" language at those who are influencing our mainstream media sources...shame on them for not reporting to all Americans all of the campaign choices in a "fair and unbiased" manner. Personally, I believe the American people are not a stupid folk and will expose the self-serving and sinister behavior of those who make media decisions...take back American civil liberties and let's build a strong America as evidenced in a STRONG CURRENCY...Vote your conscience...mine's tellin' me to Vote Ron Paul.

  1. As part of his campaign to protect our Constitution, Ron Paul has been fighting to keep the US out of the UN, and UNESCO in particular, and get the UN out of the US!! UNESCO sponsors a politically correct school curriculum that teaches about global topics, such as land mines, world poverty, hunger etc., totally unrelated to American sovereignty, and it is against American values and freedom. You can see it at;
    http://cyberschoolbus.un.org/
If you want to guard American sovereignty and the Constitution, continue to support the campaign of Ron Paul, who is likely to be and independent candidate if he does not get the Republican nomination. Also, do not answer the door for little trick-o- treaters for UNICEF! They are just conspirators of the UN and global government, and they undermine our Constitution.

  1. Dear Friends

I want to tell you about the day I had on Monday. I stopped in nine
towns throughout North Carolina, starting the day at 7:30 a.m. in
Elizabeth City and ending with a rally in Raleigh. That's the most
stops I've ever done in a single day -- for any campaign. And I
couldn't be happier to work that hard for Hillary.

I talked to a lot of people that day, and one thing was crystal clear
-- people want Hillary to stay in this race until every last voter has
a say. That's why Hillary and I are working so hard. That's why we've
made a deep commitment to keep campaigning, keep fighting, and keep
    winning.

We have had a lot of success in this campaign, and our come-from-
behind victory in Indiana is the latest example of how Hillary wins
when she has your support behind her. As long as you share her
commitment to winning, this race is going to continue.

Our next test is just five days away in West Virginia. Hillary needs
your help right now to keep winning.

Contribute now to help us show the strength of our campaign.

I know something about coming back to win after you've been counted
out. So does Hillary. Over the course of this campaign, the pundits
have tried to declare a premature end to the race dozens of times.

Well, last time I checked, it's still up to the voters. And there are
a lot of voters who haven't had their say yet.

It's up to us to make sure that the voters in West Virginia and the
other states yet to come are given a choice. I urge you to act now to
    help Hillary keep fighting.

Show your support by making a contribution today.

I wish I could talk to every last person who has worked so hard for
Hillary to thank you for everything you've done for her. You mean so
much to both of us. She's still in this thing because of your hard
    work and your indomitable spirit.

    Sincerely,

    Bill Clinton

  1. Dear FRIENDS,

Have you seen the general election polls lately? They consistently show that we'll beat John McCain in November. In a national head-to-head match and in the critical swing states, the numbers show I'm the best candidate to take back the White House for Democrats.

That is why it's critical that we stay in this race and keep fighting for every last vote. We can win the nomination if we extend our popular vote lead, and that means putting everything we have into the final races. With just a few days before the voters in Puerto Rico head to the polls, our campaign is working hard -- and your support is making the difference.

Every vote matters. I need you to help today and join our matching program. When you give today, a supporter will match your contribution and double its impact,

Contribute today to have twice the impact on the final primary races.

In the past 24 hours, thousands of you have given generously to our campaign, and I'm so delighted to see your incredible commitment.

With your help, we're going to keep driving forward to victory, and there's no better time to help than right now. By making a contribution today, you'll double your impact when your gift is matched.

Contribute today, and your gift will be matched.

Thank you for putting your heart and spirit into this campaign. I couldn't do it without you.
