Romney call raises McCain temper as issue
By Michael Levenson, Globe Staff
MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. -- Mitt Romney's campaign is blasting out automated phone calls that feature a recording of former Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania raising questions about John McCain's "temperament" -- a hot-button issue that Romney himself has assiduously avoided.
Santorum said in an interview today that he wrote the script himself, and the campaign deferred to him and approved it.
"John McCain has written about and talked about the issues that he has with respect to his temperament and his ability to work with other people and to do so in a way that's productive," Santorum said in an interview after stumping for Romney at Dave & Buster's restaurant.
"This is not something he hasn't spoken about and talked about and admitted to and I think that to me it is a relevant issue for people to consider…I think it's one without question that factors into his ability to govern, to form coalitions and to get things done."
But Romney had insisted as recently as last week that he would not make an issue of McCain's temperament, which some critics have said tends toward the hot-tempered and angry.
"I think the contrast that I'll seek to draw is, as in the past, we disagree on a number of issues, I'll talk about those issue
differences," Romney told reporters on Thursday in Fountain Valley, Calif. "We have very different backgrounds in terms of our life experience but I'm not going to be talking about personality matters"
Santorum said he had personally witnessed problems with McCain's temperament, which he declined to detail.
"I don't know anybody in the Senate who hasn't," Santorum said. "Everybody has their McCain story."

McCain does have a temper problem. He is a loose cannon. John Edwards has been talking about it on the campaign trail...that he would not like that guy near the red button. Most people wouldn't. He is crazy and his rise has been largely to the media's unfair coverage. MSM is in the tank of McCain...but he is not choice of conservatives.
I think it has been very obvious in the debates that Mitt Romney conducts himself with class and dignity. In contrast we see Mccain not able to articulate himself very well and tries to throw out low blow comments instead of discussing the issues in detail. Romney has facts to back up what he says while Mccain relys on name dropping of people he will have to depend on for ideas. Romney would definitely represent the United States in a more presidential manner than Mccain.
Vote for Mitt Romney and let's see what great things he can do to get our country on a more positive track!
Shrewd politicians could make the "hot temper" issue a 'hot' issue and call it a personal attack. But the truth is that for the highest office in the world the matter of a candidate's level of self discipline and contro,l not to mention public decorum, is more than valid; it is essential. In the wider world where volatility brews rampant we need a level and well tempered leader to set the bar. I believe this is what is giving momentum to Barack Obama. People are tired of the old guard - the Nixons and even LBJ tempers and crudeness. It simply isn't going to fly anymore. Problem is that McCain has the name recognition over Romney and little time left. But like Mitt Romney, I have faith and optimism that the American people will come through or at least the Republican side of the American people ;-) I am basically what you call a social conservative (Very Conservative Catholic) Mitt Romney is the way to go!!
