Calling all filmmakers for Obama

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 13, 2008 12:48 PM

MoveOn.org, the influential antiwar group, is holding a contest, urging filmmaker wannabes among Barack Obama backers to create a 30-second TV ad.

The prize: The spot will air nationally and the winner gets a $20,000 gift certificate for a camera and editing package.

The judges include Boston homeboys Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, whose low-budget movie "Good Will Hunting" launched them to stardom. Others include filmmaker Oliver Stone, musician Moby, and civil rights leader Jesse Jackson.

In a web video announcing the contest, dubbed "Obama in 30 seconds," Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org's executive director, says, "Grassroots energy helped propel Barack Obama into victory after victory. And now we need your grassroots creativity to help put Barack Obama over the top."

The group, which has endorsed Obama, held a similar contest in 2004 for ads opposing President Bush. The winner showed children picking up trash and working on assembly lines with the message: "Guess who's going to pay off President Bush's $1 trillion deficit?"

Submissions to the contest website start March 27 and end April 1, with the winner to be announced April 17.

  1. Is this really a new story??? You have got to be joking me. The Globe is now hand in hand with a political campaign, soliciting the creation the a political ad under the guise of "reporting" of a contest judge by some Boston based actors.

Right on! The Globe shows its true political leanings! Why should we expect anything else?

  1. Quit your whining. If MoveOn was doing a film about your candidate and the Globe reported it you'd be thrilled.

  1. Can I submit a horse and pony video. I dont think Obama is truly selling what he advertises. At least with Hillary we know what were getting.
I will either vote for McCain or skip voting this time... maybe just write Hillary in.

  1. Sorry Muldoon, but you apparently weren't reading the Globe when it and every other outlet under the sun was for days was all excited about the video by Jack Nicholson (a old movie star from back in the Clinton era) in support of Clinton. I thought the press would never tire of it. At least this story ends four days of Geraldine Ferarro ( a politician from back in the Clinton era) bemoaning that she is misunderstood.

  1. This isn't a news story. It's a blog entry. Political Intelligence is a political blog. Thus, yes, it is a relevant news item. It is akin to the Red Sox blogs writing about the Pedroia-Lowell-Lugo Dancing With the Stars spoof. Nobody whines "is this news?" when the sports bloggers offer humorous or interesting tidbits about the hometown teams.

  1. Does it get any more pathetic. The Globe is now running promos for MoveOn.org the same disgraced far left outfit that smeared General Petraeus.

    Here's my ad:
Scene 1: Opens with Obama's preacher yelling racist, anti-American trash from the pulpit.
Scene 2: Obama saying we all need to come together as Americans.
Scene 3: Obama's preacher yelling more anti American crap.
Scene 4: Obama saying we all need to come together as Americans.
Scene 4: Obama's wife speaking some more anti American crap.
Scene 5: Show John mcCain as prisoner of war. Flashback to Obama's preacher screaming America deserved to be attacked. Show McCain saluting upon his arrival back to America.
Scene 6:.... Show the flag flying./

  1. Good for MOveOn. I'll send them some more money. I will not vote for Mrs. Clinton under any circumstances. She will do, say or be anything to get herself or her husband elected. They are mad for power and nothing else.

  1. To Is this really a new story??? It must be I have not heard of it. That makes it new.

  1. Yeah I'd love them to do a video showing how Obama can win, he has not won any Democratic states (except for Vermont and any crazy liberal can win that one). I just know if the Dems make the fatal mistake to put Obama up, then they will go down as hard as McGovern or Dukakis. If I were McCain, I would be pushing for Obama. Yes, Obama wins over McCain in national polls but remember it is by electoral votes and Obama has not won many of those states required by the Dems.

  1. Obama might win the nomination because he wasn't investigated by rhe media. However, his racist associates will give victory to McCain. Look how successful moveon's commericals were in 2004.
