Chicken hawk: McCain meets grill

Posted by Sasha Issenberg March 2, 2008 11:13 PM

SEDONA, Ariz. -- The apron hanging outside the kitchen with the faux presidential logo said "Hail to the Chef," but John McCain admitted on Sunday that his culinary expertise was limited to the art of grilling.

Presiding over two large gas grills on the deck of his creekside cabin near here, McCain prepared pork ribs and chicken for Senator Lindsey Graham, Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, and former senator Phil Gramm, along with a few dozen reporters and staff. The dignitaries had come to McCain’s desert redoubt for a weekend confab featuring some of the likely Republican nominee’s most loyal senatorial and gubernatorial backers.

After leading a short tour of his property with a firm grasp on his grill tongs throughout, McCain shared his recipe for both ribs and chicken: a dry rub with a Hog’s Breath seasoning that is equal parts garlic, salt and pepper; bone side down on the grill; finished with repeated douses of lemon juice to keep the meat from drying out.

Despite his fondness for hosting backyard barbeques, McCain said he had little interest in cooking indoors. Grilling is “a social occasion,” McCain said as he flipped a rack of ribs. “You have people standing around, and you can shoot the breeze.”

  1. Story title, are you kidding me?

Chickenhawk (also chicken hawk and chicken-hawk; sometimes designated after a person's name by [c.h.]) is a political epithet used in the United States to criticize a politician, bureaucrat, or commentator who strongly supports a war or other military action, but has never personally been in a war, especially if that person actively avoided military service when of draft age

I have little positive to say of this man, but "ChickenHawk" is inappropriate

  1. McCain will continue to the illegal occupation of Iraq and more troops will die. The continued to deficit spending will break the back of the US economy for future generations who must pay down the debt. The American people were mislead into Iraq. The present Adminstration doesn't care about the American people. They use Faux News to promote propaganda to keep the largely unaware American mass supportive. Wake up American, we are being scammed. Vote out Republicans and Democrats who continue to support the war!

  1. Cool! A Commander in Chief who can also grill! I love BBQ's. I, like our future President also find them therapeutic. I am voting McCain if Obama gets the nod over Hillary!

  1. What is the matter with you people (and by that, I mean the Globe editors)? Headline aside, don't you remember what we got the last time the press fell all over itself joshing with the OTHER candidate who was fun to have a beer with? Can't you see when you're being played? How about writing something about McCain with substance? Like what does he suggest for alleviating the health care crisis in this country? How would he get us out of Iraq? If ever? Why did he seek the support and endorsement from a notorious bigot like Hagee? Please, stop getting touchy-feely with the good ol' boy and stop insulting your readers.

  1. I second Rebecaa Marks. So he invites the press to his BBQ, big deal. Does EVERY reporter who attended have to write about it? I'm disappointed that you omitted the "trusty hound" by his side. Why? Inquiring minds want to know.
