Clinton extends lead in Pennsylvania

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 18, 2008 10:01 AM

Hillary Clinton has shored up her lead in Pennsylvania, the next battleground for the Democratic nomination, according to a new poll.

The Quinnipiac University survey released this morning gives Clinton a 53 percent to 41 percent lead over Barack Obama about five weeks before the April 22 primary. A Quinnipiac poll in late February said Clinton's lead had shrunk to 49 percent to 43 percent.

As in other states, Clinton leads among women, white voters, and older voters, while Obama has an edge among African-American and younger voters and those with college degrees. Pennsylvania, with 158 delegates at stake, is a near must-win for Clinton.

The telephone survey of 1,304 likely Democratic voters was conducted March 10-16 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

  1. Bigoted uneducated voters are the target of Hillary's messages. And they hear her loud and clear.

  1. "Pennsylvania, with 158 delegates at stake, is a near must-win for Clinton."

What does this even mean? How could you possibly know what she must do, or nearly must do, in order to convince a critical mass of superdelegates to negate the significance of the voters?

  1. The article is titled clearly, but a tad wrongly.

The current Quinnipiac poll has Clinton at 53% and Obama at 41%, a 12% gap. That is up from a 49-43% Clinton lead in Quinnipiac's 2-21 to 2-25 poll. However, the poster fails to note that Clinton's lead was:
    16%, 52-36 in the 2-6 to 2-12 poll.
    28%, 43-15 in the 11-23-2007 to 12-3-2007 poll, and
    33%, 48-15 in the 10-31-2007 to 11-5-2007 poll.
Clearly, it is Obama who is surging and Clinton who is trying to hold on, as has been the case in every primary this cycle. No news here.

  1. Why is it that college educated people are more inclined to vote for Obama?! I have a couple of degrees and I will vote for Obama, but I see older people veering off to Hilary when they should be researching their candidates. I for one am done with Washington politics and I am also done with the tons of lying that politicians throw at the publics feet. We need change, we need someone who can talk to our enemies and not threaten them, we need a new person. I am a republican and I vote Obama

  1. Hillary has a good chance of getting more than 20 points now after Rev Wright's speech. Obama is now on the defensive and she needs to open another front, the oil companies' profit, for example. Let people know she wants to find a mean to lower oil price and inflation.

He's a hypocrite someone to be feared because he clearly talks the talk.
WAKE UP AMERICA do we want this man as the president of the United States of America? He can't find it in his heart to wear the flag on his lapel but did you notice when he gave his speech he welcomed 4 flags standing behind him (He's a hypocrite and I for one have had enough of all his talk)

  1. As predicted, the MSNBC spin meisters were out in full force putting a happy face on the pastor Wright racial anger.

Obama is still keeping to the lie that he never was present and never knew that Wright was a racist even after 20 years.

Let us hope that people do not forget that Obama was in the crowd yelling AMEN to this racist for over 20 years and now that he has been caught, well, it's under the bus for racist Wright!

What lack of judgement on the part of Obama.

MSNBC took the opportunity to carry the water for Obama in going after Hillary Clinton - real cheap shots!

Obama now ends his speeches with "God Bless America" - is that ok with the racist pastor Wright?

Let us hope that this marks the beginning of the end for Obama!!!

Clintons are as trustable as someone selling you the brooklyn bridge and offering the Statue of liberty as an incentive. She shouldve quit the campaign a long time ago and the only reason she is still in is beause she only gives a hoot about herself. And I mean please ppl she is of questionable moral values...You really think she stuck with Billy boy because of wanting to work it out or do you think it was more to help her budding political carrear? Lets understand for a sec that the one flinging the most mud is usually the one with the most to hide. We also know his wife was never proud of this country until now (now that her husband is running for the nomination of Pres), and that he supports a church and pastor who is part of the hate America crowd. b) Mccain - good guy, decent human being, hero, but old outdated ideas
    c) Obama - will make a different - will treat people right, is white and black and will reduce hate and suspicion on both sides, will stop the war

It is truly a shame that the education system in this country is so bad that grown people of legal voting age can't tell the difference between "there" "they're" and "their". And yet, all the people that differentiate between these simple words would know what's best for us and all of them would support Clinton. Not saying all the bad spellers are Clintonites, just saying that they seem to have this same, "DO WHAT I TELL YOU TOO!" attitude even if they can't even understand that substituting "they are" for "they're, there, or their" is an easy way to access the correctness of their spelling decisions.

How is Obama a loose cannon? How is Hillary "tried and true"? The woman is dangerously inexperienced and has a dark demeanor. She's hard not only to trust, but she seems hard to get to know and get along with. The reason people are not getting on board with her is overwhelmingly in my experience because she is RICH. Even when she was at her poorest she was very very affluent. Therefore, she cannot understand or relate to the needs of the common people.

  1. Saying Obama is down by 12 or 17 percentage points at this early juncture is like saying Tiger Woods is down 7 strokes on day two of a major tournament. If all Hillary has is a 12 point lead with 6 weeks to go, she is in trouble. Conservatives won't like Obama's response or responsiveness to his recent Wright woes, but today he spoke to ALL Americans as President Obama. Get used to it. Polls are interesting, but I just registered 5 people just last week in PA who are voting for Obama; none of them got a call from a pollster... (Go figure)

  1. IF Obama is elected President of the US, what guarantee do we, the Amerian people have, that he won't appoint the his mentor, his confidante, his spiritual leader, the wonderful Rev. Jeremiah Wright, to some governmental position in Washington? Wouldn't it just be a little ironic to have someone who HATES the US government and who HATES white Americans to be representing us, perhaps, around the world? It makes me "cringe" to think Rev. Wright could ever represent me and what I believe....

No, buddy, that's just a lie straight out of your mouth. He said he put up with it just because the man was his spiritual leader. Just like you might think it's ok for a woman to have an abortion if her life is in danger but your preist would deem her a murderer and preach that she should be locked up for life. Just like your preacher might condemn homosexuality but you love your lesbian daughter. Just like your pastor may say that everyone who had sex before marriage is going to burn in Hell but you don't believe it.

If you're going to spread lies about the man, the least you can do is listen to him or read the TRUTH of what he said, in his own words. When you just flat out lie, it only makes you look like the idiot. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/03/18/text-of-obamas-speech-a-more-perfect-union/?mod=googlenews_wsj

  1. The conceit if the Obama campaign is that he can go to Washington and be a "uniter, not a divider", if you'll excuse the Bush II quote. While some very educated people actually think that will happen, the chances of the Republican Party doing anything to help a Democrat become a success is nil. Barring the chance that a tidal wave happens and there are 60 senators who are Democrat's in the Senate and that none of them come from states where they had to be borderline Republicans to get elected, a truly observant person would take that conceit off the table. That means we'll have a brilliant orator with what amounts to two years in the Senate and a few more in state politics as our president. We have to lose one of his years in the Senate as he said he was too busy campaigning to even do oversight on Afghanistan via his sub-commitee. Not sure that's a risk worth taking.

Every time HRC was challenged (aka wrong) in vocal debate she has looked like she just got busted cheating on a test. He face gets red and mad over someone calmly responding to comments. I just keep waiting for her to jump up and say "NOT FAIR NOT FAIR" and start crying. Do you really think that crazy powers around the world will even talk seriously with HRC? Would you? If you didn't already figure out. I want cool, calm, and collective Obama speaking for me! As far as his religious beliefs.... or better yet... a response to what his Rev. said.... give me a break. Have you ever heard a controversially person speak before. I think it did exactly what he wanted it to do. It made people think from the other side of things for once. We have been doing it for decades.... now they can't? They world was built on constructive criticisms.

  1. History has shown for the most part leadership is an inherent trait. So, arguing who will make a better President, Obama/Clinton is a matter of opinion and/or desires backed with limited tangible evidence. I think the real question centers on risk…and…resolution. Would you promote an intern to the position of CEO in Fortune 500 Company? Probably not, so why would we consider electing one as President. Obama may be just what we need, but at what risk? I have yet to hear him define the changes he speaks of. I’m not a big fan of Hillary…but she does at least have a track record, experience, and motivation needed to lead our country. Sometimes you have to go with the lesser of the two evils. In this tight race…I think I’d be identifying my running mate...is a Clinton/Obama/Obama/Clinton ticket realistic?

  1. Look. I like both candidates, and I particularly respect Obama and think should he be our next President , he would make America proud (though not sure if he would be effective). However, I am really tired with the arrogance toward the "less educated" that Obama supporters display here. Does that mean that you would not let the "less educated" folks join your group lest they spoil your "reputation"? What about Bill Gates, Dan Snyder, Peter Jennings, Diane Rehm, ..who are without a college degree? Formal education does not make you more intelligent or better a person. This kind of arrogance has alienated America and was one of the reasons that caused Gore and Kerry lose to Republican candidates. So cut that out (To you arrogant Obama supporters only: I have a B.S and a J.D.). . As far as I know, my colleagues who hold advanced degree support Hilary while those with just a bachelor's support Obama. So based on your assessment, should I say the highly educated support Hilary and the merely educated support Obama? Do you see how ugly and dumb that sounds?

  1. Dear Hillary Clinton:

In reference to your application for a position as the next Commander in Chief we have decided to give the position to another Candidate.

Below are the reasons why we unable to qualify you as viable.
When requested you failed to provide the following critical information:

1.Provide Americans with your resume detailing specifically your 35 years of experience.
Provide Americans with your list of corporate lobbyist contributing funds to your campaign.

    2. Provide Americans with your list of lobbyist that contributed (over $800k) to healthcare plan in 1993-1993.

    3. Provide Americans with White Water information which would clarify the Clintons involvement.

    4. Provide Americans with full campaign funding contributions made by Tony Renzko to Bill Clinton.

    5. Provide Americans with detailed descriptions of how you contributed to Ireland’s peace agreement.

    6. Provide Americans with detailed specifics of your foreign policy experience. (Sinbad said it was just a song and dance routine for soldiers.)

    7. Provide Americans with your earmarks disclosures.

    8. Provide Americans with an explanation of your relationship with Muslim Clinton aide Huma Abedin.
Provide America with full detailed disclosure of how you were able to loan your campaign 5 million dollars. We are assuming the donations of the last month paid her back with interest of course. Which means you (Hillary) probably netted a $8-10 million profit from her own campaign treasure chest (tax payers $$).

That being said Mrs. Clinton you have failed to past the most important part of being honest to your public and are therefore not electable.

America will keep your application in our files for future openings in your areas of non-expertise.

    Thank you,

  1. In the past I have voted independently. But, the degree of Republican corruption and influence-for-sale is too Mussolini-esque for my palate. For those who are learning to read, that means they're neo-fascists in their practice of exclusively serving the rich and the military, and not the citizenry. So, NO more Republicans for me prior to a year-2025 reassessment, should we survive their requirement that the U.S. trash the global environment with China’s help.

Thus, late last year I put the good news-bad news Clintons even with Barak. But, Hillary, while cognitively smart, is combative and domineering, not endearing and without charisma to bring disparate groups together. And, I don’t think we can credit her much for Bill’s administration. That was then, he was Prez, not Hillary, and she needs to run on her own credentials in the Senate and by virtue of her leadership there.

My opinion is there are many ways for any woman to be smart, show leadership, and still be an appealing person. But, she is less and less appealing to too many Americans, mostly because of her slash and burn style of attaining power...and selling out to fascistic Republican manipulations without doing her homework. We have much better female leadership in this country. For example, have a listen someday to the appealing style and smarts of Jennifer Granholm! (No, I don’t live in Michigan.)

This brouhaha over shade of skin, so perfect for Republicans in a few never-make-me-think-again red states and in uneducated rust-belt parts of Pennsylvania and Ohio, needs to pass. Barak is the one candidate who shows a high level of integrity. He is not bought. McCain will be bought by the religious (not faithful, not Christ-like, but dogmatic version) right and corporate vultures. He is the first candidate to credibly take on the Washington (unsustainable) status quo in recent memory.

Can we please let Hillary and her baggage go, and take out this Cheney-Bush clone of a militarist McCain?

  1. To Kathleen:

The reason we know that Obama won't appoint Jeremiah Wright to a governmental position--a ridiculous notion--is because our constitution ensures a system of checks-and-balances and an, at-least, two-party system that works well to sideline any agendas that don't serve the greater good.

If conspiracy theory is the strongest argument or sentiment that some people who are not voting for Obama have to go on, then it's best that they not vote for him. If you think he hates America, that he's a secret muslim, that he's a black extremist, that he breathes fire, or that he is the anti-christ, then you SHOULD vote for Hillary or John McCain. That would be best.

Barack Hussein Obama is all talks. We cannot mention that he is black (what is wrong with that?) We cannot mention his middle name. We have heard him lies over and over again. Wake up America! The Clintons dedicated their whole life to be in the forefront in the fight towards civil liberties and protected the minorities and now we call them racist because it's convenient for Obama?

  1. Why does Obama keep distance from Rev. Wright when he has been indoctrinated by this Pastor all the 20 years of being his loyal servant to his Pastorship? Why only now do you have to pretend that you have not been absorbing all his anti-American rhetorics all through this years.

  1. Obama cannot win it all. If the Democratic party wants to get into the presidency they had better hope Clinton runs. The American people aren't ready for someone named Barrack HUSSEIN Obama to lead them.

  1. Hillary Clinton has flaws from start, she was not affirmative when asked if she'll run for Presidency , she sides step the issue many times. She flip floped on controversal NY Drivers Licence for illegal in the debate and now contemplating on dirty politices and racial lines by using Bill and Ferraro, trying to dismantle Obama's effort for Presidential effort. At any wanted stance, she should try to discredit GW Bush for all the chaos and disaster he has put US. The scandel comparison of Obama's priest behaviour to ex- President Clinton moral conduct is far apart. Bill Clinton is morally bankcrupt and Hillary should not repudiate it. There are better knowledgable and qualified entrepenuars to run US then these two power hungry dynasties. To withdraw troops from Iraq in 60 days and then bring a issue 3am phone call ad, shows she is not ready for peace. She is walking a very thin line.

  1. How could Senator Obama preach America to move beyond past racial wounds while his pastor and his church are keeping every single old wound bloody and inflicting new wounds (HIV, drug use, prisons, etc.) every Sunday morning during so-called sermons?

He cannot disown that ritual because that would be like disowning his community? But he wants the rest of the country to "move beyond racial wounds."

The right place to start is .... Tell Pastor Wright to move beyond racial wounds and stop preaching hatred and promoting anger based on racial divisions.

  1. Why is it that a lot of the highly-educated people who are expressing their opinions here seem to have problems with spelling and proper English sentences? Are they really as educated as they contend?

This whole election campaign seems one of the strangest I ever remember. The country is ready for change, however it is best described. Change is a must for our survival. Who best represents change? I'd like to know what change means to the readers of this comment.

  1. Why argue over who's the better painter when one of them is a great artist in history. Why debate who's the better quarterback when one of them is the sportsman of the century.

When Hillary's candidacy was tested before Ohio and Texas, she came out yelling "shame on you". In the contrary, when Obama is tested now, he came out and delivered a message on race many consider the most moving and important since "I Have a Dream". We see something extraordinary through powerful words, and that he's a whole class above other politicians, no matter how good they may be at their game. Do we want a seasoned politician, or a great leader and visionary?

  1. To Mandy... "earned her stripes"? Are you kidding me? What "Experience" does HRC actually have? That is the great myth about her candidacy that her idiotic followers seem to ignore. SHE HAS NO EXPERIENCE!!!!!! She counts her years as 1st lady of AK and USA on her resume. Give me a break. Yeah, yeah she's been in the Senate...FOR LESS TIME THAN OBAMA!!! It is easy to see why HRC gets the uneducated vote. Doesn't anyone anywhere actually question this woman when she makes her claims about 20 years of experience? I am embarrassed for you blind followers...please realize that this a woman who will say or do anything (legal or otherwise) to be elected. Wake up and truly understand what HRC is all about...HRC and no one else.

  1. A major claim for Obama's superior statesmanship and trustworthiness is his sound judgment. But the Rezco and Rev. Wright associations call his judgment into question. I wonder if his supporters in Iowa would like to have a "do-over" caucas?

  1. As a man who still isn't sure who he wants to win the primary, and as someone who judges candidates not based on my demographic or whose husband used to be a good president, I'd just like to say that if the people of American actually wanted something to be done to make our nation better we would stop using every excuse to denounce someone who is obviously so great because of the tiniest discrepancy. Furthermore, I would like to ask Ms. America to marry me.

  1. Michelle Obama's remarks that she is just NOW proud to be an American tells it all. She and Barrack have been listening to Wright for 20 years and have been supportive of the pastors social ideologies; that he hates Amrica!!!

  1. Seriously - what EXPERIENCE does Clinton have that OBAMA doesn't have other than having to put up with a cheating spouse? You really think she united Northern Ireland all by her lonesome? You think that because she failed miserably trying to get Universal Health Care passed that this time will be different? What the hell does redecorating the Lincoln Bedroom have to do with running this country?

Nobody can answer that for me because there is no reason to logically think she's so much more experienced than Obama.

Shawn. Your ignorance is astounding. May God have mercy on your soul, holding a man's middle name against him like that.

  1. Obama's speeches are more like sermons and we know he knows a great deal about them. While they are uplifting at the time his words ring hollow with me. Also, he does not write his own speeches. His top speech writer is a 26year-old white male. I'm young, white and educated and I am voting for Hillary. A woman always knows best. Women don't speak hate either. She will change our country for the best.

    GO HILLARY!!!

  1. One more white Jew for Obama. Right here.

Rev. Wright? Who cares. Standard black church stuff. If you are surprised, it only shows you were ignorant. If you are concerned, it only shows you are paranoid.

Rev. Wright is a minor figure and there is no evidence that his two-minutes of endlessly repeated "greatest hits" sound bites represent the respectful and generally decent man that he is. Much less that they represent Obama, who is a different person entirely.

This whole nonsense does not dent my enthusiasm for Obama one bit. He is clearly the best candidate, hands down, when you consider the ISSUES.

Hillary supporters, you should be ashamed of yourselves, piling on to vicious race-baiting attacks from Fox News and a bunch of closet KKK nazis. Is that how you plan to win?

Rick, what you wrote on this space, suggests that you are a Republican voter. Because I heared the very same thing about the Bushes and the Clintons. You gave your self away, and also you're wrong. Under the Bushes we've had nothing but misery, and under Clinton, even you have to admit we had prosperity. If you're still hung-up about his affair, get over it. If you think the reason for switching your alligance from Hillary, It's a free country. But don't tell lies.

  1. I find it interesting that someHRC supporters say that they won't support Obama if he's the candidate and some Obama supporters feel the same way. It's okay to support your candidate but to say you won't support the other person if your candidatei s out doesn't seem smart. That would only serve to signal the end of the Democratic Party as we know it. Think people.

  1. The people of PA really need to get their act together. It really tells the rest of the country what kind of people you are when yoyu listen and agree with a liar like Hillary Clinton. It just makes you folks look stupid and ignorant. I always thought my sister state had smart and intelligent citizens - boy was I wrong. How can anyone in their right mind even consider voting for this NASTY, EVIL, LIAR. Don't you people know when you are being lied to? Don't you people know when someone is taking advantage of you or are you all so old that you just accept this EVIL WOMAN'S words because she's so good at not telling the truth. Wake up folks before you get sold down the river - because she's gonna do it. She doesn't care about you nor will she remember you shen all is said and done. Don't give her the opportunity to use you. DON'T VOTE FOR THIS EVIL, NASTY WOMAN - if she is even a woman.

  1. For 20 years the American presidency has been occupied by two families-the Bushes and the Clintons. This is reminiscent of the ancient, Roman Republic, where a few families dominated the executive branch of government (the Consulate). Is this what Americans truly want?
