Clinton gains in Ohio, Texas polls

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 3, 2008 02:28 PM

The latest round of polls out today suggest that Hillary Clinton might have some momentum heading into Tuesday's crucial contests in Ohio and Texas.

The Ohio surveys, which were all completed Sunday, indicate that Barack Obama is no longer closing the gap and that Clinton might have rebuilt a double-digit lead. For instance, a SurveyUSA survey of 873 likely voters gives her a 54 percent to 44 percent edge. Meanwhile, a Public Policy Polling survey gives Clinton a 9-percentage-point lead.

The Texas polls, also finished Sunday, suggest that Clinton is catching Obama after he overtook her in recent weeks. The SurveyUSA survey of 840 likely voters gives Obama a 49 percent to 48 percent edge, well within the margin of error. The Public Policy Polling survey says Clinton now leads in Texas.

  1. And the self-immolation continues. Clinton and Obama are hurtling toward a nasty convention fight that will leave both candidates beaten up and the party bitterly divided. Will Clinton be the nominee, thereby sucking all the hope and enthusiasm out of the campaign? Or will it be Obama, thereby turning off the party hacks who've lined up behind Clinton? Either way McCain's the winner.

Speaking of... what's all this garbage in the media about how the Democrats had such a strong line up of candidates this year? Really? Given the country's checkered past on issues of race and gender? Given Clinton's God given ability to polarize the electorate and unite conservatives? Given Obama's lack of experience? Strong against whom? Dubya running for a third term?

Only the Democrats. Only the Democrats could botch things up in a year when the economy's in the tank, foreign policy is a disaster, and Bush's popularity is hitting new lows. But at least Nader is entering the race. Now they'll have someone to blame when they lose in November.

Yeesh. Where's Al Gore or Mike Bloomberg when you need them?

  1. I know that if Obama was a woman , she wouldn't have made it to where he is now. Her experience just wouldn't have made it. And that is a fact.

Hillary Clinton is the right one for the job. She will get things done because she will know how. She has worked hard through the many years gaining the experience to be where she is now. And that is a fact.

Please, American's, let's not mess things up again, like we did the last time we voted for a President. Open up your minds and really look at who you are votiing for. Know how long they will be in that seat as our President.

Look at their resume's and see who will qualify. Isn't that usually the way you pick the right one for the position. Why not this position? Is this position different. I don't think so. This isn't a game. We don't have the time for games.
This is very important to you, me and our children and their children. Wake up!
Vote right this time. We can't afford any mistakes this time. It's too late.

Isn't the USA built on equality. Vote the person with the best resume for the job. Isn't that the way it's usually done.

  1. My worry about Obama seems unimportant enough, that he was available to vote on 130 roll calls but didn't. He had a chance to establish a profile for change 130 votes ago, and didn't. But Hillary did vote, and though some of her votes were unpopular with me, at least I knew where she stood and what she believed, so that today, on balance, I feel I know who she is and what she's about.

But mostly I'm disturbed during the debates at how often Obama peeked at Clinton's tablet and then was seen to immediately transfer that information onto his own pad. This repulsed me. And it was not imagined. It's there today, plain for anyone to see who isn't afraid to. This is a further suggestion that he's indecisive, unable to think quickly on his feet. There aren't any cheat notes to be had in the Oval Office.

  1. I keep saying it, the Clintons have lied to everyone for over 35 years, they have lied under oath while living free in the White House, it has been one scandal after another with these two, they have climbed the ladder by hurting many people ( and it doesn't even bother them) they always resort to dirty politics, they stole from the White House, embrassed us as a nation while representing this country, and they were impeached!
This isn't even all of it. Why do people continue to believe these two when they have proved time and time again they lie! They will do whatever it takes to get what they want.
When I deal with someone who I know has a history of lying, I don't believe anything they tell me unless they can prove it.
There is no change with the Clintons. They have not changed themselves nor will they create change in our country. They keep secrets from the American people regarding things that we have a right to know about.
I don't trust them and I certainly will not help them get back into the White House so they can continue their self-serving behavior while we suffer with the same issues.
If we really want change we have to start it ourselves by creating it. Like changing who has been in the White House for years now, the same two families, and look at the mess we are in.

  1. The only people who will be calling Ms. Clinton at 3 a.m. will be the Democrat Party leaders who call her on Wednesday morning telling her to resign from the race or be forced out. The voters are no longer fooled by her dirty tricks, and obviously, her sleazy tactics have not worked in 11 races so far. She has no real "experience" and she has no more respect among world leaders than she does from Putin, who basically laughed at her for her pathetic, mismanaged campaign.

Time for Hillary to sit down and shut up. What goes around, comes around -- Hillary. You pulled your lies, deceit, and nonsense on the American public before, and we will not permit you to do it again. Fool me once shame on you -- fool me twice, shame on me.

  1. How could Kennedy and Kerry both endorse Obama's candidacy? How on earth could they possibly believe that a person who spent part of his childhood in Indonesia, a country hostile to the US, attending Indonesian Muslim schools would ever be electable? Isn't it obvious that the Republicans will point out the obvious reality that Obama would never even be able to get a secret security clearance if he were to join the military? And there are other aspects about Obama that are even more troubling:

A strong economy, the protection of woman's rights, the rights of minority, human rights, universal health care, strong national secuirty is what people need. People will be together once we have this, and only HIllary Clinton is smart, experienced, knowledgable enought to do so. Texans will be the state that makes the smartest choice and that is HILLARY CLINTON.

  1. Both Barack and Hillary are far more qualified than George Bush on any criteria one may consider. John McCain is a decent man, but his conservative positions are clearly out of step with today. In 2008, this "No Country for Old Men"

Hillary brings unfortunate old baggage (Bill) to the contest.

Barack Obama is the candidate who can best serve our country and more importantly improve how the we are viewed by the rest of the world.

  1. The same GOP group that is currently in office targeted the Clintons. Millions of dollars were spent to bring down their administration and what did they get them on? An affair. FDR died with his girlfriend at his side. (Was this a big deal? No the big deal was the New Deal). The economy was terrible before the Clintons were in office. Under their administration, the middle class and US were prospering.

Obama supports NAFTA (he was a no vote on NAFTA Peru). He's courting NAFTA with Canada. First denied it and then had to admit it (review the breaking news). At the very least his land dealings represent very poor judgment. Actions that cost the tax payers $14 million. Rezko campaigning donations started his political career and allowed him to purchase his residence. Google Rezko and the Chicago Sun. Too much to list here but it indicates he is not the man we need running this country.

Hillary has doable plans that will put America back to work. Do you realize that China, Korea, and European countries subsidize high speed internet? This has created all sorts of high tech jobs (new industry, global sales for small business etc.). Our infrastructure is pathetic by comparison. She has high speed infrastructure in her economic plan. Many other ideas can be found on her website. Her plan is doable, sustainable, up and running quickly not 10 years down the road. The Clintons understand that technology, grants for higher education, rebuilding the infrastructure put people immediately back to work and build lasting technologies.

If you confront Obama with facts, he stalls, attempts to change the subject and if pushed provides a stock reply (the American people don't want polarizing politics or similar rhetoric). He's much more skillful but this is typical Bush rhetoric.

He started running for President after serving only two years in the US Senate. He said he was against the war but do you realize he wasn't in the US Congress when they voted to go to war. He has consistently voted for war funding in the two years he could vote on the war. This is commonly referred to as double speak. Kerry put together legislation to set a deadline to bring the troops home. Guess who didn't support this. Yes Obama.

Obama has two years in the US Senate. There is a track record but it isn't the one he talks about. He talks about change not about his record. Examine his voting record for yourself. www.votesmart.org

Rhetoric is easy. Results are much more difficult. I'm hoping I can vote for the candidate with a plan and track record of results. That person is Hillary.

  1. Obama came from way behind and closed the gap in both Texas and Ohio. Now the newspapers and Clintonites are moving the goal post and raising the bar for him to WIN--- a bar the Clinton camp has yet to reach despite a considerable head start. Two days ago the desperate Clinton camp went "Nuclear" to scare off the voters, but the voters are too smart to fall for another heap of lies -- too many lies and denials history recorded during the 8 years of the Clinton White House. Even if Obama loses the popular vote tomorrow, it will be by a small margin and he will still win by a larger margin in real delegates. He has already won 11 times in a row against the well known and supposedly "most experienced" candidate. Give the guy a break, will you. Regardless of the Texas/Ohio Clinton firewall, we'll know tomorrow by this time. Won't we!

Jury Will See Mansion of Obama Supporter Rezko
Rezko Held Numerous Fundraising Events at His Wilmette Mansion

By BRIAN ROSS & AVNI PATEL
    Feb. 28, 2008—

With the corruption trial of a longtime friend and supporter of Sen. Barack Obama set to begin next week in Chicago, the judge ruled today that federal prosecutors will be able to show the jury photos of Tony Rezko's suburban mansion because they are evidence of "events that occurred" there and of his "opulent lifestyle."

Rezko, charged in a scheme to bribe and corrupt Illinois officials, held numerous fundraising events at his Wilmette mansion, including one for the 2004 senate campaign of Obama that raised more than $60,000.

Obama is not considered a target of the federal corruption investigation, and his campaign staff says any contribution tied to Rezko has since been donated to charity.

In her ruling, Judge Amy St. Eve rejected Rezko's argument that showing the photos of his home "will generate additional media attention" and "add unnecessary stress and anxiety for the family during an already difficult time."

The ruling indicated that witnesses will testify about events that took place at Rezko's home, but it does not indicate whether the Obama fundraiser, held in June 2003, would be one of the events.

Several of Rezko's associates, also figure in the investigation, attended and contributed to Obama.

An earlier motion by prosecutors detailed two instances in which Rezko directed others to make campaign contributions to "a political candidate" who has since been identified by Chicago papers as Obama.

In her ruling the judge said she doub

  1. This is Timo from Germany. Iam just astonished about the democratic nomination in here .. It just looks like a personal fight in here. I feel sick, HRC more a less only can attack Obama. I don't know much of his background and it is not business to judge about the candidates. What impresses me, is the fact that Obama is doing his thing from the start on, he just and only fires back if attacked. That alone makes him presidental alone. I hope he stays like this, because he can do the same easily with HRC. I hope this is over by tomorrow, but with 2 wins (Ohio and R.I.) she will (for what price??) stay in the race.
America, your political system really sucks. And the media is terrible too ...
Wonder where Edwards will tend to vote, don't understand why he and many other so called superdelegates don't make their support public. What are they waiting for, high positions ??
Finally, if the race will go on, I advise HRC immediately to start to organise her tax-papers, 4 weeks should be time enough. But i know she will do everything as she can to prevent it before Pennysvenia vote, as there are her voters too giving her a good chance to win this state too ...

I believe that my president should be stronger, smarter, tougher, and more experienced than me or any American for that matter. I don't care if my president gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling in my stomach, or whether he/she is funny or charismatic. I want my president to get the job done. I vote for experience and qualifications, not for some obscure idea of hope and change. I am young, and I am an idealist, and I am a woman. I believe that much is possible in this life. And I don't buy what Obama is selling.

  1. When is it going to get through everyone's head that Hillary is not Bill Clinton. She had an experience record long before he did and he will agree to that. She is the most qualified. I also seem to remember that with all the investigations THEY DID'NT GET A THING ON THE CLINTONS, EITHER ONE OF THEM with the exception of SEX (ON HIS PART) . The europeans were laughing their socks off. Who cares! I cared if I found it easier to advance in the business world under the Clinton administration. I DID. I cared about our economy because the directly affected me. THE ECONOMY WAS SORING DURING CLINTON TIMES! I WANT THAT BACK. I cared if we were a solvent nation. WE HAD A BUDGET SURPLUS AND THUS WERE NOT OBLIGATED TO ANY OTHER COUNTRY ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH. We are now endebted to China and the Saudi's - UNBELIEVABLE!

Now I know how hard it is for the male ego to take orders from a woman which I find puzzling since as I remember it was all the little boys holding on to their mothers skirts and crying that first day of kindergarten while the girls were forming friendships and forgetting their mothers were even there. Perhaps that memory haunts them throughout life. There is one thing I'm sure of; with the exception of Bill Clinton men are not multi-taskers, women are. They can have six things going at the same time without breaking a sweat. A President must be a multitasker.
Most important, this is A rare opportunity for women to finally burst through the glass ceiling, to be considered on the same pay level as a man doing the same job, not 25% less. Once we have raised our children we are ready to go out their and realize our full potential. Only a woman President can help us accomplish that.

Many professional women never marry and choose a career. They should not be put down (as men have a tendency to do). They are single because most men are put off by powerful smart women. Fools them all.

This is our chance girls. Democrat or Republican, Hillary should be your girl.

  1. Look at the history of the campaign.

Obama has been a true statesman from the beginning. If you look at his declaration to run and what he's talking about now, he has never wavered or changed his main thesis. He has never gone negative and has sworn allegiance to the working and middle class.

Hillary has proven one thing about her character (take it as a positive or a negative): She will never back down, no matter what the cost. She will never admit mistakes; she will do and say anything it takes to win.

My plea: Don't fall into the Clinton campaign tricks trap! Go Obama.....yes we can

Barack Obama consistently implies he didn't vote for war...well, neither did Hillary, and guess what? OBAMA WASN'T EVEN IN THE SENATE THEN!!!! Just another one of his preacher-man misleading and commercial attempts to create reverie. He is empty and transparent, and when the h*t hits the fan, he will crumble. 1. Hillary is acting like a bad kid throwing a temper tantrum or should we say a kitchen sink. I'm not overly please with either of the 3 candidates. But I have no intentions of voting for someone who raises the question of Obam's experience and the only solution she has is to give important issues a "time out". How many times have she said that trade and the war, and other items of pressing concern needs a "time out". This is not the Clinton Day Care. So the comment from the previous writer is correct. Wake up!

Clinton wants health care for everyone: fantasy or reality. I think you're all smart enough to figure that one out. She also wants to bail out all of the folks who use exotic loans to buy homes that they could not afford, have you and I will foot the bill, and in the end they still wont be able to afford the homes. Better idea; come up with a way to get them out of the home and into affordable housing.

There was an older Chatholic lady on the news saying that she was voting for Clinton because she will end the war in Iraq and this would give her a chance to see her grandson before she dies. News flash! Mrs. Clinton help send your grandson to Iraq to start with and God forbids that he dies there like so many of our sons have done in a useless war.

Senator Clintion cant secure the border, let a lone the country. It's odd that the Hispanic vote may sway this elections and they'll vote for the candidate that's going to provide them with affrodable housing, free health care, free education, and a free pass. Go Hillary.

And to the comment on Barrack's land deal; how quickly we forget the Clintons and their land deal scandal. And we're still waiting on the tax returns!

If this sounds like I'm a supporter of Obama, please be assured that unlike Louis Farrakhan (who hates Jews) and Hagee's (who hate Catholics) and supports McCain, I have not yet endorsed a candidate. I guess I haven't figured out who I hate. But I know what I hate; people who spend our money for the purpose of attacking sovereign nations and malicious attempts at damaging the crediibilty of their rivals.

Lastly, the experience factor: Barrack doesn't have much and Hillary let's be honest, neither do you. Granted, it doesn't take much to surpass that of current President. And John McCain, for the record, I don't know if being a POW for several years in another unfortunate war, makes you ay more qualified than the others.

  1. The fact of the matter is Obama is more likable--there's no denying it. And it is perceived he can bring together the nation to move us to agree on public policy. The man is inspirational, and we need a little inspiration right now. However, Hilary has more experience and she is more moderate. She hasn't played completely fair this campaign, and there is baggage with Bill (though, let's be honest, most people love Bill Clinton's charisma too). The problem with the last 8 years is that people voted for the person they'd most like to have dinner with over looking at the issues. Candidly, I'd rather have dinner with Obama, but I'm voting for Hilary because I agree with her on the issues I care about. If you agree with Obama--vote for him--that is what you should do. That is what makes this system great, even if our candidates aren't always perfect..

The thing you need to know about Texans: they kind of act like they're hip and cool, but deep down, they are looking for security and substance...as they should. That is why Senator Clinton will win Texas, and will go on to win the White House in November.

  1. It appears that, yet again....we are being "greased" to have our vote's ignored and another election STOLEN! Whenever the conversation shifts to Clinton "gaining momentum"...we are simply being prepped for the inevitable...being shafted. Ms. Clinton should respect the will of the people and should gracefully bow out. Her stubborness and entitlement attitude (the Clinton Dynasty) is only hurting the Democratic party....and poising the Republican party for a "three-peat". She has been a formidible opponent but unfortunately, she is not running for the President of Just the 4 BIG States...its called the President of the UNITED States!

As it relates to the comments above regarding the experience factor of both Clinton and Obama...It has been noted that Obama has 10 years of public office experience, while Clinton has six...Obama has sponsored 820 Bills and Clinton a mere 20, which consists of such things as 1) naming a courthouse after James L. Watson, or 2) naming a post office after John A O'Shea or 3) recognizing the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, or 4) honoring Shirley Chisolm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death or 5) congratulating the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship....Whoah boy! Watch out! Talk about some experience!

Obama's record includes: introducing 233 bills regarding healthcare; 125 bills on poverty and public assistance; 112 crime fighting bills; 60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills; 97 economic bills; 21 ethic reform bills; 15 gun control bills; and 6 veterans affairs bills...just to name a few.

Furthermore, since when did being "married to someone" make you qualified to do their job? How many of you would get on a plane piloted by Chuck Yeager's "wife"? or have your ob/gyn's "husband" deliver your baby?, or give the game winning shot to Juanita Jordan (Michael's "wife")?...give me a break!

Until we develop a method of selecting highly qualified candidates, we will continue to get the dregs for our candidates.

  1. I have read some of Obama's comments. he is from the rust belt, guaranties new jobs, but from where? I have neither been a Clinton fan and have always stayed to the conservative side, but she is the right person for the job. During her husbands presidency she sought health care reform, right or wrong, she did at least try to get some reform. Where is or was Obama. Looking for jobs...son they are gone. Unless you invent some "jobs" Ohio will become the biggest looser in foreclosures ever.
Facts in 1995 GM was the largest private employer at 62,500 in Ohio and Walmart was 6th at 12,500. Today Walmart is # 1 with 52,000 employees in Ohio and GM is down to 12,500. Jobs are not the answer, the type of jobs are...stupid. You can have all the $ 12.00 an hour jobs you want...that is below poverty level. Mr. Obama it is the amount of money that you take home from your job that permits you to go forward.

  1. Posted by Tom Callanan March 3, 08 10:41 PM, "Hillary has been vetted. Hillary has fought for working men and women, particularly children and veterans. Hillary is my choice to lead this great nation!"
Were you even awake when "Slick Willy" Clinton and wife were in office? She cares NOTHING about veterans and they proved it during the military draw downs of Clinton's era. A majority of our armed services were forced out because the Clinton’s felt the military was bloated. Several months later we watch airmen being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu, Somalia. Veteran’s that were months away from retirement were forced out with a fraction of what they should have earned for their service. A great majority of combat experienced veterans were forced to leave on the 15 year rule. The SQT (Skills Qualification Test), a bench mark of military training levels, was removed. Retention Control programs were instituted and poorly trained officers and NCO’s were promoted to senior positions. The military was systematically dismantled and neutered.
Amazing how quickly we vilify Kerry and McCain over supposedly not having a military record, but it is no big deal for Hillary because she is a woman (you know, there ARE women in the armed forces as well). She is going to be the armed services “Commander in Chief” head of ALL military forces, and has no idea of the commitment and sacrifice that is given by serve men and women for our country. Hillary and “Slick Willy” did not care about veterans then, and they will not care about them over the next four years if she is elected

  1. I'm so glad Hillary is hanging in, and making a comeback. We are so lucky to have her, and I think we are going to see another landslide victory in the legislature. And I'm so glad she is still Mrs. Clinton. Imagine, two brilliant minds in the White House, plus a team second to none -- and for a change, there's going to be a landslide change in the legislature, packing it with Democrats.

This promises to be the dawn of a whole new age.

  1. Andre10056 is incorrect regarding Obama and Indonesia...

Indonesia as a nation is note hostile to the United States. As an Australian I lived there for a while, and was constantly surprised by the amount of people who wear shirts or bandana's imprinted with the American Flag. Many Indonesians are upset with America's Foreign Policy...but hey, so are many Australians, and for that manner many Americans. To say Indonesia is hostile to America is completely false.

Also, Obama never attended an islamic school in Indonesia. He attended a PUBLIC school. I have been there, and I can confirm...it was a PUBLIC school. Don't listen to all the conspiracies.

Having said that, I would prefer Hillary, but I think that either democrat candidate would do a good job.

  1. Obama is not our best option Dummy!!? Why would any american vote for someone, who has no expereince, and a name like Barack Hussaine Obama!. what is wrong with our american people. We made our first mistake when we voted of Bush, now here we go again. This Muslem is a wolf in sheep clothing. America? Wake Up!!!!!!!!!! Go Hillary I don't know about most people but I remember the good times for 8 straight years.

  1. This is to John M: How can you say that type of thing about Obama? He isn't Muslim, and how dare you discriminate against Muslims just because some of them are bad! I can't believe that people could be so close-minded.
Vote for who agrees with what you agree with and don't pay attention to thier gender, race, or religon! I hate how some women vote for Hilary just because she is a woman, and I hate how some black people vote for Barack just because he's black. Does it not matter what the people actually think?!
