Clinton goes 3 for 4 in comeback
By Scott Helman and Susan Milligan, Globe Staff
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senator Hillary Clinton breathed new life into her presidential bid last night with key victories in the Ohio and Texas primaries, ending Barack Obama's month-long run of momentum and adding yet another twist to the historic contest for the Democratic nomination.
Clinton, who also won in Rhode Island, brought her campaign back from the brink: She had not won a contest since Super Tuesday, and was facing increasing pressure to consider dropping out of the race. Last night she told relieved supporters in Columbus, Ohio, that the victories proved that voters wanted the contest to go on.
"The people of Ohio have said it loudly and clearly," she said. "We're going on, we're going strong, and we're going all the way."
Her backers chanted jubilantly, "Yes she will!"
"For everyone across the country and in Ohio who has been counted out, but refused to be knocked out, for everyone who stumbled but who stood right back up, for everyone who works hard and never gives up, this one's for you," Clinton said.
In Ohio, Clinton led 55 percent to 43 percent with nearly 90 percent of precincts reporting by early this morning. In Texas, she led 51 percent to 47 percent with more than three-fourths of precincts reporting.
The Texas primary was only one part of the vote there yesterday. Two-thirds of the state's delegates will be awarded based on the outcome of that vote, but the other third will be allocated based on the results of caucuses that Texas Democrats held after the polls closed last night. Those results were still be tallied early this morning.
Obama, meanwhile, picked up another win, handily beating Clinton in yesterday’s Vermont primary.
Clinton's triumphs alter the dynamics of a race after Obama had won 11 straight contests. But it was not immediately apparent what her victory will mean for deciding an eventual nominee.
Her campaign a couple weeks ago predicted it would be ahead in the delegate race by this morning, a goal it has not come close to reaching. What seemed evident last night, given the close contests and the way Democrats allocate delegates proportionally was that the results would not significantly change Obama's current overall delegate lead of more than 100.
"No matter what happens tonight, we have nearly the same delegate lead as we did this morning," Obama told supporters in San Antonio last night. "And we are on our way to winning this nomination."
Amid the uncertainty in the Democratic race, the Republicans yesterday finally removed any doubt about who their nominee will be: Senator John McCain of Arizona, a 71-year-old war hero and long-time Washington fixture, officially sealed the GOP nomination by handily beating former governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas in all four states.
Obama, who has often been mocked by both Clinton and McCain as a politician capable only of giving nice speeches, used his Texas address last night to push back.
"John McCain and Hillary Clinton have echoed each other, dismissing this call for change as eloquent but empty, speeches not solutions," Obama said. "And yet they know, or they should know, that it's a call that did not begin with my words."
It is the voters -- those without healthcare, those struggling in the economy, and those facing foreclosure on their homes -- who are the ones asserting that they want to write a "new chapter in the American story," he said.
"You can call it many things, but you can't call it empty," Obama said.
Obama and Clinton entered yesterday’s contests with distinctly different objectives. Obama was looking for a knockout punch, hoping a win in Ohio or Texas might force Clinton to pull out of the race. Clinton, who for weeks has counted on the two states to put her back into contention, was looking for a comeback in a fierce nomination battle that has already raged through 40 states, awarded more than 2,600 delegates, and gone through two full months of voting.
Now, the race moves to Wyoming, which holds caucuses Saturday, and Mississippi, which holds a primary Tuesday. The Clinton campaign is already downplaying its prospects in the two states, and instead pointing toward Pennsylvania, which holds a primary April 22 and is the biggest state still to vote.
A total of 611 pledged delegates — those won from caucuses or primaries — are still to be divvied up before the national convention in late August. By any measure, Clinton needs to win the remaining contests by dauntingly large margins to catch Obama in the race for pledged delegates, which his campaign argues should determine the nominee.
Obama is also closing the gap with Clinton among superdelegates, the 796 elected officials, party leaders, and others who could hold the balance of power because neither is expected to reach the 2,025 needed without them.

The very fact that Clinton is able to stay in the race despite 11 straight losses, amidst all the negative publicity and pressure to drop out, speaks volume of a woman of tenacity and fortitude. I respect her "never-say-die" attitude - and this is the kind of leader the US needs.
And for Obama, I wonder how he'll perform under similar circumstances? If you're winning, everything is well. But can you remain steadfast when things go wrong? And now that the US is not doing well economically and lost a lot of prestige and ground to other rising powers, can he stand up to the job of commander-in-chief? I have my doubts.
maybe he will quit calling himself 1/2 half american now. which half comes first? this type of divide the country went out of style about the time the black people were lucky enough to be in the usa to be set free.
Hillary Clinton's win in both Texas and Ohio is a devastating blow to Barak Hussein Obama. Hillary Clinton is on the way to making history as the first woman president. The public is beginning to understand that Obama was a fad, and that the average hard working American such as those in Ohio understand that Hillary Clinton is the best bet for a strong economic days again. The Clintons in the White House again will bring prosperity back to America.
All Obama is, is a talker. Clinton is a doer and explains herself in detail.
The only reason he has won any contest is because of the Black vote. Most Blacks will vote for a black no matter if the person is the devil himself.
Good lord this one's a doozy! Ask me Do I care who wins? Either one is heads better than the buffoon currently in the cat-bird seat. Jesus Mary Joseph!
Thank God the good people of Ohio and Texas voted for Hillary plus R. I. I can only anticipate that Miss. and PA will follow suit and elect Hillary R. Clinton for President. But, John McCain will not be that easy to beat. However, his ties to the war and President Bush will hurt him badly. I fail to begin to understand just why our vootors are voting for Sen. Oboma. He is nothing but fine talk and promises that he would play h..to keep if elected. I feel proud to be from Ohio. Go Hillary GO!!!!!!!!!. Commander CDonn
Dear Barack, please take the gloves off. It is time to knock her out. I realize that you want to stay on the high ground and that you don't need to resort to slanderous allegations and the rumor mill to sneak back into this campaign. We appreciate your candidness and your willingness to answer questions. Instead of gossip disguised as news, perhaps you could compare your senate records. Show your service to this country as a real senator, writing real legislation, and show Clinton's senate run for what it is, a political step to become president. You have all the tools that you need to win. Find a way to reach out to those older dems. You have us younger ones. We love you and support you in your efforts.
Hillary will do anything and say anything to win, she has had 40 different messages and will throw the kitchen sink to win. It is an effective strategy, has worked for the Republicans and Karl Rove for years. Throw enough mud and some will stick. But you get plenty of mud on yourself too. Obama is going to have to adapt to the dirty tricks and folks will have to reward those who run an honorable campaign by voting for them. If dirty tricks continue to work, we will see more and more of it, and nothing changes, the republicans have plenty of mud to throw at hillary. The folks who are happy to see Hillary win with the kitchen sink strategy are going to be outraged and hurt and feel betrayed beyond belief when the republicans throw enough mud to sink Hillary. And you know without question, the Republicans will be united and in full force attack mode running against Hillary. She could be the Democrats lose in November
It doesnt matter who wins, they are both nothing but socialists hell bent on making this country a 3rd world nation by taxing, regulating and by rewarding people who dont / wont work.
strange
Keep going Hillary! We need you!
Obama is the minion of a master who cannot be named...his wife is not who she seems - she wants to bring an end to the world and destroy us all.
You might want to add that Clinton is able to carry all the large Democratic (Blue) states, as well as Michigan & Florida. Obama winning democratic votes in Republican dominated states, however he cannot carry these states in the General election; also if he can't win the large Democratic (Blue) states....How could he pull off a win in the General?
Clinton has the ability to win the General election..Do the math people.

Stay the course.
We are continuously praying for Clinton's win.
This comments states that Americans are yet recist now !!
Shame to them !!
21st - are you serious?! I can tell you who Hillary's "masters" are... the insurance and pharma companies. Her healthcare "plan" involves fining the poor to make them rich. Is that what you REALLY want? Stop looking at the fact that she's a woman, and look to your own future. Look at the issues at stake. How she won Ohio is beyond me... she's the Walmart corporate lawyer who first came up with the idea of shipping jobs overseas. Sheez.... all you sheeple need to wise up and do a bit of reading. Really!
Hillary may not be out on this count but all the people supporting her in Ohio and Texas should consider one thing.... what is it the Clintons forgot in the White House that they have to go back and get? She has already ruled the country once - through her husband (Biblical Reference - The two shall become one). Its not that the Clintons are super human beings, with superior intellect to rule the country. Being desperate is different from being a fighter. Being desperate is loaning your campaign $5 million, attacking your opponents, etc. Win on the strength of your abilities, not your perception of your opponent's shortcomings. It shows an attitude to apportion blame. If you are not doing well, blame somebody. Which is what will continue if she gets nominated and eventually elected.
What a load of crock. Obama might not have the experience but he can unite a nation. what amazes me is that americans couldnt see through the mud slinging. Hilary was clucthing at straws with the religion and nafta issues. Its a joke people bought it, but sh!t will get you to the top, it wont keep you there.
Hilliray as commander in chief...yeah the rest of the world is already smiling.
I'm surprised she would think the Philanderer shoulod be part of the Presidency again - Obama would be more respectful of the electorate, and would be less corrupted by power. The USA needs a bigger change than it might think
If you read what the Bible says about what happens to nations run by women, you might take a second look at another candidate. Personally, I don't think anyone can fix this country, because the privileged are seldom held to accountability, either by themselves or anyone else. And individual responsibility isn't popular. Our leaders lack the ability to lead first by example. That is; of being honest first, with themselves. About their limitations, their allegiences, their motives and their arrogant self delusions. Without regard for profit and fame for themselves, their pals and families at almost any expense.
Obama is a great candidate, but the press has not done a good job of taking the next potential president to the test. Now the truth is coming out. He will need to pass this challenge to be worthy of the nomination.
Moreover, Obama supporters are my brothers....but they need to stop whining so much. This is presidential politics, no whimps allowed.
As a registered democrat I'm torn between even voting for either one, Obama 's background worries me.....I have read many time of his Muslim roots and although I all for religious freedom, he never mentions it. As for Clinton I remember the last time a Clinton was in the white house....And the lies and deceit that was going on. The way he let things happen like making deals with Iran to get arms to soma. To give arms to Iran to get to another nation..Thats a no no...and now here we are at words with Iran.....also the way the Clinton adm. cut defense and CIA funding then 911 and the bad Intel in the Iraq war.......I just don't know........I think are country is in big trouble.....But I must say I think I will have to go with McCain.....at least he has some patriotic values.....and is a veteran and understands what it means to be an American........He has the experience....Clinton always say she has experience....I beg to differ, She only been a senator for 10 years and won that on the coattails of her husband.........It got to be McCain.........Obama I question a lot about his background and motives........Clinton well remember she says she has experience but as I see it no way.........McCain .....Its has to be McCain......
It nevers ceases to amaze me how the main stream media has managed to hide the truth about the Clintons. The Clinton Chronicles, bank theft from Grenada,
Clinton Body Count, cocaine smuggling from Mena, Arkansas, Huma - Hillary's lesbian lover and all Bill's sex scandals, rape, murder, the locked up files in the Clinton library which will prove 9/11 was a legacy of the Clinton's, lying, voter fraud, voter bribes, disrespecting , yelling and arresting voters.
Corporate media has sold their soul to the devil. Is a paycheck really worth it?
I challenge all American journalists to for once report the truth. Get some integrity, you may not believe it , but you still have freedom of speech.
Clinton NOW, and Obama in 8 years.
It won't work any other way...
Hmmmm... Barack gets one week of media scrutiny and he loses his ground. What does that say about his greater electability if he were to go up against the Republicans? Hillary on the other hand has had the heat on her since February and she manages to come ahead where it counts.
"You may tread me in the very dirt / But still, like dust, I'll rise./ ... This is not the first time you have seen Hillary Clinton seemingly at her wits' end, but she has always risen, always risen, don't forget she has always risen, much to the dismay of her adversaries and the delight of her friends./ ...Rise, Hillary. Rise."
- Maya Angelou

Substance, consistency and steadfastness are what people in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island see. Go spread it to everyone that yet to decide, yet to vote. Open their eyes to see the differences between a substance and hollow, consistency vs hypocrisy, the willingness to right the wrongs and the STEADINESS of commander in chief - Don't run away from reporters no matter how hot the questions. If you can't stand questioning, who else can?
God bless America.
What if Hilary were a man? I guess she already won. I've never thought that Hilary is a woman.....Austrialia, German, many other countires had a woman political leader. What is wrong with US?
I wish Hillary Clinton all the best because Clintons have been the best friends of India. Surely all the Indians are going to support her through thick and thin.
Go Hillary go........we are with you.....AWAKE..........ARISE.......START......AND STOP NOT TILL THE GOAL IS REACHED............
those posting racist comments here just argument the argument for electing Obama, to prove that the majority of the US no longer lives in the stoneage. Hillary would have made an interesting candidate but she has resorted to the traditional Washington technique of slinging mud rather than talking about her accomplishments - how sad. Is America ready to elect a minority or a woman? Maybe not, sadly, if the Democrat party itself can't see how blessed it is by these two outstanding individuals and stop the internal carnage.
Once a witch, always a witch, for those who want her, you can have her! Once a bitch, always a bitch, for those who want her, you can keep her! In fact you deserve her! Never mind that she can't even run her own home, let alone the country. What the world really needs now is another Clinton????
OMG. "minion of a master who cannot be named" "Thank GOD the GOOD people of Ohio and Texas voted for HILLARY " No wonder people all over the world think Americans are stupid and arrogant. Thanks you all for proving them right. Wake up people!
Whoever wins the Democratic nomination, whoever wins the presidential election, one thing is certain; Americans will choose the worst possible candidate to occupy the Oval Office. Though I hesitate to use the word choose, since it was not actually their choice, but the corporate media's choice.
Still, the rich will triumph while the middle and lower classes continue to be thrown under the next available bus.
Invest in the prison industry if you want to prosper. It's a sure thing. prosper.adadministration.. Each of these three candidates
Clinton won by default. Republicans (knowing
cCain was a shoe-in) crossed over and voted for CLinton to throw the vote toward her. They want to keep the Dems divided and take on Clinton in the end. ALso, Ohio voters in pro-Obama areas were turned back at SEVERAL polling precincts, even as early as the afternoon, being told that "they were out of Democratic ballots." The precincts have confirmed that they ran out due to Republicans voting in the Democratic race. Clinton has proved only one point- same old politics as usual.
Clinton can't win even with better policies on her side.
Healthcare executives recently choose Clinton as Best Presidential Candidate for Healthcare According to a Beacon Partners' Poll but these these same executives wouldn’t necessarily vote for her, here's the article: http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20080303006264&newsLang=en
Talk about a tough battle, you win on better policies but still can't win people's votes !
As an Obama supporter, I am obviously disappointed in yesterday's primary losses. As I look to the next three primary contests in Wyoming, Mississippi and Pennsylvania, I am becoming quite concerned as I think it's likely Senator Clinton will win these next three contests as well. I believe that will happen because the less educated, conservative citizens are going for her by wide margins over Obama. I find that discouraging for Obama. While he has his flaws, he is the most enlightened candidate and that's what we need in our next president, among his other positive qualities and plans for the future. I fear the less educated and conservatives will continue to go after the same, as they have in electing and supporting Bush. Wyoming gave us Cheney, Mississippi gave us Trent Lott and Pennsylvania gave us Pat Toomey. Not real visionary politicians as they continue to give us the politics of fear. I hope these states prove me wrong, but I doubt they will.
