Clinton, Obama try to frame the race ahead

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 5, 2008 10:50 AM

Her campaign thrown a lifeline by voters in Ohio and Texas, Hillary Clinton made the rounds of the morning TV shows to claim momentum.

His winning streak stopped in its tracks, Barack Obama went on the same shows to emphasize he's still ahead in delegates.

The contours of the Democratic nomination race ahead are emerging after Tuesday's primaries changed the dynamics, yet again.

While Obama has won more states, Clinton argues that she has won many of the big states -- California, New Jersey, and New York, as well as Ohio and Texas -- that a Democrat must win to wrest the White House in November.

Obama called that cherry-picking, and his campaign argues it will be nearly impossible for Clinton to catch up in pledged delegates. According to the Associated Press tally, Obama had a total of 1,477 delegates, including superdelegates, while Clinton had 1,391 delegates. It takes 2,025 to win the nomination.

Clinton sought again to claim she will be a stronger candidate on national security against presumptive Republican nominee John McCain -- an argument made most vividly in the 3 a.m.-and-your-children-are-sleeping TV ad that apparently had impact on late-deciding voters in Texas.

Obama's campaign is hinting that it will start responding with more criticism of Clinton.

Perhaps the most intriguing tidbit came when Clinton was asked on CBS's "The Early Show" whether she and Obama should run together -- the so-called dream ticket that some Democrats want. "That may be where this is headed, but of course we have to decide who is on the top of ticket," she replied. "I think the people of Ohio very clearly said that it should be me."

  1. OBAMA SHOULD UNLEASH ANYTHING DIRTY HE HAS ABOUT THE CLINTONS, THERE IS NO NEED PROTECTING THE CLINTONS. HOW CAN YOU CLAIM YOU WILL NOT HESITATE TO STRIKE THOSE WHO ATTEMPT TO HURT AMERICA YET YOU ARE HESITATING TO RELEASE DIRTY FACTS ABOUT THE CLINTONS EVEN WHEN THE SCANDALS ARE TRUE.

  1. I think the dream ticket is a good idea, it would unite the democrats, which is what we need. less of the negative smear campaigns that the republicans are so good at. the democrats need to SWEEP the election, not let the repuplicans sneak away with it yet again. this is a very important race. Hillary is qualified, Obama has new appeal. But they'd both be great. That's why it's so close. They should just hold hands and go together instead of squabbling for scraps. Hillary has the big states, and Obama is holding on to his lead. But really they'd both be great. That's what the American democrats are saying. We want both.

  1. This isn't a "defeat" for wither candidate - it is a win for the Democratic Party.

Did anyone bother to look at the numbers of democratic voters that turned out, on Tuesday? There's no chance in Hell that Insane McCain can win, come November!!!

  1. Please keep in mind, particularly for folks like Victoria Eddins, that the point is to win the general election and using words like 'stealing" when referring to either democratic candidate only helps the republicans.

  1. Go Hilary!! I found it absurd that in such a close race, she was being asked to give up. WHY??? She has something to bring to the table. It's all about power for the Clintons?? Please give me a break. The quest for power always has something to do with any candidate's run for public office.

  1. Great fun to have these 2 superlative candidates in such a close contest. The prospect of having both on the same ticket raises the possibility of having one of the best Democratic tickets in decades. Senator Obama ought to accept a Vice President nomination. Even though that slot bears the reputation of being windowdressing, it would provide invaluable experience for him to succeed President Hillary Clinton.
P.S. Ms. Victoria needs to think about better educating herself, and while Mr. Bluejack noted the omission of the word "in," he tossed in an extra "the" in his comment.

  1. The America people like Hillary. The media is not going to change that fact, no matter how much they bash her. They like Obama too, but they like Hillary just as much. Deal with it, folks. It's going to be a tough race because there are two equally qualified candidates. Of course, Clinton has won most of the debates, so perhaps this makes her an even BETTER candidate--I don't know. BUT, it's going to be a close call.

  1. Okay...here we go!.....New development (see below) in politics behind the scenes after last night...the party is talking behind the scenes that they are wanting a joint ticket...if they keep fighting each other (Hillary and Barack) and spending millions of dollars fighting "each other", it is a waste of money that can be used to fight Mccain, thus beating each other up and the public would look to Mccain in the general election..the republicans are loving this fight between Hillary and Barack...just puts a divisive wedge in the party..he has got the popular vote, but she has got old school washington...so now, back room deals are going to happen..she cannot get /win the popular vote, too many states in his favor and she knows it, but he can't get to the magic number either, but he will be in the lead by a 100 or so delagtes by the time all states are in..but neither will have 2025 delegates (him around 1,950 and her around 1850)...thus, enter the "superdelegates"!!...and those guys would never buck the popular vote, there will be mass chaos in streets and with all the work to energizing the voters this year and interst in the party, the public voting trust this year will be destroyed and pissed if thier will is undermined...so the public will trust no one and they wll think there vote really does not count, as the "superdelegates', can change the will of the people...not a good thing!....she is going to consider trying to bring Florida an Michgan back into play, but that is 'changing the rules in the middle of the game, so that is not a good public trust option either... so she is spinning for what she is being told by the folks in back room...(john lewis, john edwards, bill richardson, howard dean, donna Brazille, John kerry, even Bill himself, to some degree)...do not try and get the nomination at any cost..in the long run hurts everyone in the democratic party....thought this might happen...Obama is lilkely getting the same message from Party leaders, but he wants the top job...and his point will be that he is winning with more states and the popular vote.....Just find a way to work togather guys...the public wants 'both" of you....

    IMPORTANT!!!!!

    All:

It is imperative that we put the pressure on two Congressional Women Shelie Lee Jackson / Stephanie Tubbs who both represent districts located in Texas and Ohio where OBAMA won with a fairly large margin. The people in these districts went with OBAMA and these two women are supporting Clinton.

Tubbs represents district 11 of Ohio where Cleveland is located and Shelie Lee represent district 18 in Tx where Houston is located. They need to respresent the same as the folks in their districts. If they continue to go against what their people have voted we MUST make sure that they no longer represent these districts. Please pass this on to people that live in these districts.

    Thanks.

Now what kind of politics is this? It's MAFIA politics.

Unless they love themselves, how can they love us all? BO is still from half junlge who has not read the Bible well. So he still has this "Honesty", "New Way" thing stuck in his mind. He cannot be a commander or the Commander in Chief yet. He has miles and years to go. He does not even know the strategy of campagining. HC should be the BOSS and The COmmander IN Chief. We will be better assured by her leadership than that simple minded GUY BO. BTW, it is a real fight and he he is not even able to properly thow the blows. That relishing of power is part of the reason we are in this mess regarding foreign policy..the Clinton administration did nothing to help the cause. You can not bully and lie about foreign leaders as you are doing to Obama. Obama has judgement, integrity, experience, a plan, and a vision to elevate this country once again. Hillary, you would just keep it in the mud where you live. You have lied and taken advantage of people in making them think you care about their plight. You only make decisions based on what is a political move for you at the time. You have no integrity, no vision and no judgement. Obama is ahead in the delegates and you need to get out of the way

Billary will rip the Democratic Party contituency apart and whoever ultimately wins the nomination will only be able to harvest 70-80% of the votes that will normally go to the Dem.candidate.

Had Obama won yesterday, he would have gotten a good support from Dem constituency + Independents + some Reps. But now the Dem race is unsettled even more and the fight will become more nasty, many many Dem supporters will be turned off and will stay home on Nov.4.

It is unfortunate that WH will still remain in the GOP's grip AFTER 8 long years of disasterous W.

I am just sorry for this sorry situation. It is bad luck for the entire America.

But based on the delegate count -- the only measure that matters now:

Iowa said it should be Obama.
Nevada said it should be Obama.
South Carolina said it should be Obama.
Alabama said it should be Obama.
Alaska said it should be Obama.
Colorado said it should be Obama.
Connecticut said it should be Obama.
Delaware said it should be Obama.
Georgia said it should be Obama.
Idaho said it should be Obama.
Illinois said it should be Obama.
Kansas said it should be Obama.
Minnesota said it should be Obama.
Missouri said it should be Obama.
North Dakota said it should be Obama.
Utah said it should be Obama.
Lousiana said it should be Obama.
Nebraska said it should be Obama.
Virgin Isles said it should be Obama.
Washington said it should be Obama.
Maine said it should be Obama.
Dems Abroad said it should be Obama.
DC said it should be Obama.
Maryland said it should be Obama.
Virginia said it should be Obama.
Hawaii said it should be Obama.
Wisconsin said it should be Obama.
Vermont said it should be Obama.

I know that Sen. Clinton doesn't like to include these among the states that matter, or states that need to be won in November, but some truths are inconvenient.

This country will get nothing done with Clinton in office all congress will do is fight, fight, fight - and Clinton won't care less she'll be back in the White house with her $200,000 of stolen items she took that she was forced to give back. The uneducated are always moved by fear attacks and false lies cause they refuse to become educated enough to not fear anymore and listen to the lies because they bother to do no research! 1. How amazing!!!! I noticed that during this last campaign for the votes of the people in Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island, the news hawks went after Mr. Obama with a fierce passion unlike seen in the entire contest thus far! When interviewing Mrs. Clinton, with the simple asking of mild questions, she took an attitude of "poor me", and accused the news media of treating her so unfairly. Then the followers of Senator Clinton jumped on the bandwagon with these accusation; what happened after that? The news media went completely out of it's way to show that it had not showed favoritism to the Obama regime, and did a character assassination unlike any I've seen in resent history. All over the cry of "foul". I would like to suggest that if Mrs. Clinton can't take the pressure of the media, it's doubtful that she would be able to take the pressureres of the White House.

  1. Hillary Clinton will be the democrat nominee. Neither Clinton or Obama can reach the 2025 deligate number without super deligates. Now the job of the super deligate is to insure that the DNC nominates an electable candidate....one that can beat McCain this year. Obama can not....most of the states that Obama has won are republican states that McCain will carry in November. The large states Hillary has won. Example: California voted Hillary despite Oprah, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry endorsing and stumping for him. Kennedy and Kerry were not even able to deliver MA with Obama's firend Gov. Patrick....Hillary won by double digits. MA will upseat Kerry, Patrick and hopefully Kennedy in their next elections for giving their superdeligate votes to Obama despite this states overwhelming vote for Hillary. Superdeligates are not required to vote as their state did....they are expected to insure that the most electable democrat is nominated and despite the obvious Kennedy, Kerry and Patrick still support Obama. If Obma were nominated he would become a member of their group Kenndy, Kerry and Obama the "also rans". California will never vote for Obama over McCain because McCain is a friend to the hispanic causes and has the endorment and support of Gov. Arnold...McCain won CA in the republican primary. California has several times now elected Gov. Arnold as a republican which means he has a get out the vote machine and it works.

Hillary Clinton is the only possible way for the dems to take back the White House this year. I would not like to see Obama has Hillary's VP. He has not been tested and has already been caught in several shady deals.....Resko, NAFTA double speak, and his wife has such a large chip on her shoulder that I don't believe her mouth can be kept in check.....proud of America for the first time in her adult life???? Obama has done a great job of getting the blacks to the polls and I give him credit for that but feel that another black man or woman would be better for the ticket...a person that has been tested. OR as a previous candidate said maybe he should run as an independent......call liberman in CT>

She needs to cut a deal with Obama so she becomes the Vice President on the ticket. Bickering between Obama and Hillary just makes democrats look disorganized, and hurts their chance in the General election. Hillary its time to go for the good of the party and the good of the country. Obama is a much better choice than John McCain

  1. It aboslutely amazes me how many people are so eager to bash either Democratic candidate, but never offer anything in return. Submitting a comment to some on-line message board doesn't make you right. It just means you have an opinion. At least with Hillary we know what we have; good, bad or indifferent. Face it, there are only 2 reasons why Barrack is where he is, and if you don't agree then provide tangible evidence to the contrary backing up his claims why he's better. Reason One: So many states moved up their primaries, putting 20 plus of them within a couple weeks of each other. Combine this with Reason Two: The media has just given this man a free ride. No negative comments, no negative assessments, nothing that can even be taken as bad. I suspect it's for fear that by doing so, it would be considered racist. Of course it's ok to eb sexist in this country. So everyone votes for in their respective state primaries and caucauses while we are still in the honeymoon stage, a stage that exisits because our media is failing us and because Barrack has really accomplished nothing of any substance in his political career. He certainly is an eloquent speaker, even when he uses other peoples speeches, but come on now. To say he is better qualified only shows a desire for something different. Shouldn't we be careful for what we wish? The man is a virtual unknown and already he's being treated like a messiah. No matter what you feel, there is no comparison between the two. You may not like her, but she is so far ahead of Barrack in so many areas, it's apples and oranges. Thank goodness Hillary is back in it. It will give the media time to get their act together and in doing so, we shall see how wrong everyone was to jump on his so called band wagon. The man is not whom he says he is.

  1. The Ohio and Texas wins for Hillary Clinton had little to do with campaign
performances, and more to do with the exposure of Barcak Obama's connection
with Antony Rezco. When Obama run away from reporters in Texas asking
him questions on the Rezco case under the excuse "We are running late," many Texans saw it on their screens and knew it was disingenuous. No doubt many
Texans made up their minds on election day, and most of them probably turned
away from Obama and tipped the scale in favor of Hillary Clinton. Worse yet, this
downturn of Obama's streak of luck is just the beginning. The trial starts tomorrow, and Obama's name will probably get some more smudges as
Rezco's exploits with Illinois politicians are spilled into the open by federal
    prosecutors.

As for the performances by Barack Obama from now on, no doubt they will be
out shined by the performances at the Rezco trial. Obama has been using the
Past Tense when he talks about Rezco, but the Future Tense will determine
his connection, it's ethical depth, and his future as a national politician. And
the outlook seems quite cloudy. Nikos Retsos, retired academic.

  1. Eight years (at the end of '08) in the US Senate for Hillary versus four for Barack plus seven years in the IL Senate. Barack has represented the people for a longer period of time than Hillary, albeit less on a national stage. I'm not arguing that Barack is more or less qualified, but I'm getting tired of women throwing out the sexist card based on the argument that Hillary is vastly more qualified. (these same women argue her time as first lady both ways: 8 years of experience and no, she has not benefited from her husband's career) Wellesley/ Yale Law vs Columbia/ Harvard Law; both are very intelligent. Unfortunately women over the age of 40 (those who fought for women's place in the world) seem to attack the intelligence of anyone not supporting Hillary, as opposed to making any non-emotional arguments.

Can we please stop accusing each other of "ism!!" Both are worthy and the best politician will likely win (not necesarily the best future President)

  1. So Hillary thinks the people of Ohio have made their choice and that is it and Obama should step down???? This country needs a change and Obama is that change. Is she that arrogant to presume that Obama should be the vice president because Ohio thinks so. She is dividing the Democratic party even more and the Republicans are very happy about it. Enough of the Clintons in the White House -we need a total change.

  1. Hillary's zealot debate style and her new terror inspiring ad campaign remind me of the political power system used by Meryl Streep's character in the 2004 Manchurian Candidate. I recommend all Hillary supporters see the movie before the next election. It seems to me that Hillary and Obama have very similar platforms, so it is not their stance on the issues that is the main concern. What is frightening about Hillary as a leader is her unscruplus use of others to gain power, her paranoia, and her uncompromising stance for her own dogmatic views on the issues. I am a senior in college, and I also wanted to point out that I have not met a single Hillary supporter on my campus.

  1. mike13 March 5, 08 01:20 PM: Obama can not get 2025, the required number of deligates either. Hillary has won all of the states that democrats must win to win in November. CA can not be carried by Obama and democrats can not win without winning California. They have proven this in the primary when they had Oprah, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Caroline Kennedy and Gov. Arnolds wife all out stumping in CA for Obama.........and the result was Hillary won easily. Obama can not and proved he could not get the Hispanics to vote for him. CA will easily hand the election to McCain with Gov. Arnold's help if their choice is Obama vs McCain. As a democrat I would like to keep the new black voters coming to the polls but we can not win unless Hillary is on top. Yes I agree that it will not help the democrat party for Obama and Clinton to fight it out but if he is still standing at the end then he could be her VP. I DO NOT WANT TO GET TO OCTOBER AND THEN FIND OUT HIS BAGGAGE IS GOING TO COST US THE CHANCE TO HAVE HILLARY IN THE WHITE HOUSE. And face facts, why would Hillary agree to be his VP when she could just stand back....and if our superdeligates failed at their job to nominate the electable candidate then ....McCain will beat Obama....then she runs again in 2012. If Obama thinks he can win the election then he should run as an independent..........the new black voters don't care what party he's in.

  1. Any way you look at it we lose. One party wants to spend money we don't
have on "social problems" and the other wants to spend money on war.

We are fighting an "economic war". War should be declared and we should
take control of our future. We need to become "independent". Stop building
10 mpg gas consuming autos and go for the 70 mpg variety. We have
"energy star" technology so why do we have light bulbs that use 100W's.
We don't need all that "China Crap" that looks like something that it isn't.

Take control America. We must accept responsiblity for our own actions.
Stop thinking like every third world country. We want our government to
do everything for us. They don't have any "silver bullets".

Health Care? What a joke! Have you been to a hospital lately.
Universial Health Care? Fine, get your check book out and start paying.
There are no free rides and no easy solutions. We must get back to basics.
The family is responsible to the family. Take care of your family needs. Food
Shelter, Clothing, Welfare, and Health. Sorry, you might have to give up an
ipod or two. Foreget about the latest cell phone or newest technological

  1. I wonder why so many Republicans support Obama? Could it be that they are confident that their boy McCain will beat him in November? The Republicans are afraid of facing Hillary.

  1. I sincerely hope Obama wins because I am vicious. I want to be rid of the Clintons. I am voting for McCain. This Democratic race is a ball. Hillary on Top where did that ego come from? Tax Records would tell too much. Who did the ad making Obama look blacker. Didnt the Governor of PA say no whiute person here would vote for a black man. This is a mess.

  1. Demos are imploding with their race war and its only just begun. The "he lied" crowd of ignorant libs would vote for a candidate who would embolden our enemies, open the door to more trespassers, increase handouts to the undeserving, cripple our energy companies, and who democrats themselves say are liars. Osama would vote for Obama, Chavez would vote for Clinton, and intelligent patriotic Americans will vote for the man who understands duty, honor, country.

  1. Wow. I just want to note, as a professional proofreader, that the #2 post on this board, which is criticizing the writing in this article, contains more grammatical errors in its two short lines than I thought possible. 1. in response to jillB, just because hillary won a california democratic primary doesnt mean the Obama cant win California in a General election. You could throw just about any democrat on the ticket and they would be a lock to take CA, NY, MA, NJ, NY. Also, Hillary is polarizing people who like Hillary love her but people who dont hate her. With Obama supports you hear im voting for McCain if Obama doesnt win, and Hillary supports are more likely to vote for Obama over McCain .You cant say that your worried about Obama's baggage when the clinton's have numerous scandals surrounding them and are unwilling to release their tax records. Superdelegates should not even exist, and i will unenroll from the democratic party if the over turn the popularly selected nominee whether it be obama or Clinton.

  1. I am so tired of the young saying that Obama is the one and those darn old are for Clinton. Well did you every think that a lot of the young are not worried about their financial portfolio, retirement benefits, health care or all of the issues at hand. I speak from experience from having 2 boys in their 20's, they are going by their emotions and not looking at the issues at stake here. I think is great the young are getting so involved this race but they need to study the issues which again, most are just not there yet. I have seen no substance in anything done or said by Obama and I've studied both. Hey everyone, study the records for yourself, don't depend on the published news, TV or radio because they have their choices and will slant the news they way they see fit. Bottom line, I'm voting for who can protect my financial future and for me, that is Clinton. If Obama receives the nomination, I will be voting for McCain. That way I can be sure there will be a check and balance between the Commander in Chief and the House and Senate.
