Dole: McCain has temper under control

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 6, 2008 10:37 AM

It's a lingering issue about presumptive Republican nominee John McCain -- his temper, legendary among some former and current colleagues in the US Senate.

Former GOP presidential candidate Bob Dole came to McCain's defense -- sort of. On CNN's "Larry King Live" on Wednesday night, Dole acknowledged that McCain has a temper, but said that the Arizona senator "can control it" -- as he has during the campaign so far.

"It's not a problem any more," Dole added.

The former Kansas senator, a World War II hero, said he gave McCain some slack because of the torture and deprivations he endured as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. "I always sort of rationalized that the poor guy had been locked up," Dole said.

A Globe report in January on McCain's temper included a much-repeated quote from Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi: "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He is erratic. He is hot-headed. He loses his temper and he worries me."

Those concerns, at the time, helped lead Cochran to endorse former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. But after Romney dropped out last month, Cochran endorsed McCain, despite any worries.

  1. Dole has to be kidding, right....?

Sure, McCain can control it, when he HAS to for the purpose of gaining power, but once he has the power that he seeks, there will be no need to control it.

This is a very typical pattern of behavior for people with his personality type. Hillary is the same type, only her outbursts are called bitchiness whereas McCain's are called candor.

The real man will emerge shortly, then look out....

  1. McCain, this supposed foreign policy expert is indeed Senator Hothead.

Just what we need for world diplomacy. (not!)

In her "interview" with him , today, March 7, 2007, Elisabeth Bumiller was right to ask "Why are you so angry?"

The American people and foreign leaders will not want to ask this about their leader.

Presumptive nominee, maybe, pompous ***, yes.

  1. What "real man"? You make it seem as if anger is a flaw. It isn't. It's just a personality trait. There are lots of cool collected people who are wicked. Give me somebody with anger who gives a damn any day over some cool and collected care-nothing who only judges things based on how they *feel* rather than how the situation itself adds up.

  1. Carter;

That's a non-sequitur. You provide no data to prove that calm people make decisions emotionally, wheras out-of-control people make decisions rationally.

There is much to indicate exactly the opposite.

  1. Congressional Record:

In 2006, the Arizona Republican congressional delegation had a strategy meeting. McCain repeatedly addressed two new members, congressmen Trent Franks and Rick Renzi, as 'boy.' Finally, Renzi, a former college linebacker, rose from his chair and said to McCain, "You call me that one more time and I'll kick your old ass." McCain lunged at Renzi, punches were thrown, and the two had to be physically separated.

Pass it along to your friends. This is very scary!
