Evangelicals' voice says it's time to stop hating Hillary

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 3, 2008 03:00 PM

With all the love being shown Barack Obama these days, an influential voice for evangelicals says it's time to stop hating Hillary Clinton.

"From all sides of the political spectrum, evangelicals respond with a surprising amount of disgust upon hearing Hillary's name," says an editorial posted today by Christianity Today magazine. "....We seem to simply enjoy hating Hillary."

While Clinton holds some objectionable policy positions, such as favoring abortion rights, and her public persona strikes many as "uppity and unapproachable," too many evangelicals have used cheap shots to join in the Hillary-bashing, the editorial says.

"Evangelicals, knowing that turning candidates into verbal punching bags will never create real community, are called to talk about political figures in ways starkly different from the pundits and hate-marketers," the magazine's editors say. "....While pundits see candidates as punching bags, evangelicals are supposed to see candidates as, well, people."

"We may," the editorial concludes, "haltingly come to realize that the most bold and courageous thing we could each do this election season, no matter who we vote for, is this: Love Hillary."

  1. Thank God, people are realizing the difference of DOERS and TALKERS. Let's vote with our MINDS and not our HEARTS.

  1. Hillary is not a muslim from Indonesia
Indonesia has the most muslims in the world at 300+ million
Hillary's middle name is not Hussein
    Hillary is not a racist

  1. I don't hate Hillary.

It isn't hate when I throw up in my mouth a little just reading the words "Love Hillary," is it?

  1. Sure...when pigs fly. She's an evil person who will do anything to get wht she wants. She is the antithesis of Christian thought and action. She will use evangelicals as her dupes for their votes and then hang us out to swing in the wind on November 8.

  1. Thank you!! I always thought it was very unbecoming of Christians to spew such vitriol in the direction of one person. And if you look at her tenure in the Senate, you will find that she is very collegial and tries to reach out to the "other side of the aisle". It is possible to disagree without being ugly about it.

  1. Ha - like that will ever happen. Evangelicals are generally not open minded enough to ever look at someone like Hillary (read: Democrat) as anyone other than a threat to their conservative lifestyle. Whether she could help them or not. Meanwhile, see how "uppity and unapproachable" many Evangelicals get when you inform them (no matter how friendly) that you don't happen to be a member of their church.

  1. I do not Know why Republicans on the far right who call themselves Christian can have hate in their heart for a person..Hillary served as !st Lady trough some real hard time. She is serving in an honable position as New York Seantor..From this American Indian, I respect her and I believe she is very Honest and inteligent plus I also know she will make a very good President and bring respect back to the United States.

  1. This is a surprising and refreshing editorial . It is about time someone said something positive about Hillary. It is too bad the presidential election turnes into a contest of the most likeable person rather than who would do the best job. You would think people would have learned after electing George Bush. Just think where we might be today is Al Gore was our president rather than Bush.

  1. I agree with the writer of this article 100%.
I have wondered why Hillary and Bill have been targetted by almost the entire nation. Bill who did nothing but GOOD for this great nation gets nothing back but insults.
The media and even some evangelists have also joined in the bashing.
WHY ,WHY, PLEASE FOR HEAVEN SAKE IF YOU HAVE NOTHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT THE CLINTONS DON'T DESTROY THEM.

  1. If I were to find myself in the same room with Hillary Clinton I would be polite. I don't hate Hillary but I certainly would never "love her." This woman has hurt many people in her climb for stardom yet she still can sleep.
I am amazed at people in this country, however, I know longer wonder how in the world we got in this mess we are in.
Bill and Hillary have been caught in many lies over the past, almost 40 years, they have used and abused people to get what they want, they have shown us that they don't care about the people unless in is in their best interest, one scandal after the other while living freely in the White House, representing our country and our people, working behind closed doors, Hillary said of the American people regarding health care," The government has to make that decision because left on their own they are not smart enough to choose health care."
They both lied under oath, they were impeached, they left the White House with thousands of dollars of stolen intems.
While running for governor of New York she promised the people she would create thousands of new job yet there job rate decreased. Still the people of this country BELIEVE what the Clintons say. If they say something it must be true. They are voting for them because of what they are saying! I don't get it.

When I know that I am dealing with a known lier, I take what they tell me with a grain of salt. I only believe them if what they say can be proved.
Like I said, I don't hate Hillary, I just know what kind of a person she really is and pay no attention to her. Since they always run as a team, I also wonder how they can be in the White House for 3 terms, I thought we couldn't do that in this country. Once you have been impeached you can still live in the White House again?

Yep, our country is in real trouble and just two families keep getting office to change things.

  1. It is interesting to note that this is coming at this point in time in the life of this campaign. I am still amazed that people of GOD who should know better and who profess to be followers of Christ went down this path, selectively against a lady whose views were not different from those of other 3 leading political contenders today. Well, if the opinion is to change now that it is generally thought that the damage has been done, well, GOD is able. HE does not need mankind's help. HE does not need anyone to defend him (as we often see with and critize fanatics of other religions). I am glad that finaly, brethen have come to realize the mistake and unfair standard to which she has been subjected to.
May our merciful GOD forgive the mistakes of those of us who engaged in this act.

So do not ONLY preach to love Hilary, preach to love ALL mankind, blacks, browns, red, white and even "colorless". Stop your "unchristian" ways of judging people!

People may have different views and that difference can not become a hatred. It is an exciting and good news for a lady who is so capable ad itellegent and has a compassionate heart to serve this country. 1. Excuse me! This s not about liking or disliking. I assume the editorial referred to the spirit of Jesus when he tells his disciples to love their enemies and to do good to those who take advantage of you. Of course I need to love my neighbor. Still, that is not the point. Loving a presidential candidate does not mean I say nice things about her politics or her values. Disciples speak the truth with love. As one who has published in Christianity Today, I do not agree that evangelicals should overlook the vastly important policy issues in order to say nice things about Sen Clinton. The bigger issue is the leadership of our country.

  1. Evangelicals will no more love Hillary than they will love anyone who doesn't fit into their view of what is "righteous." Ironically, the very people admonished by Jesus to be meek and humble; to love others as themselves, even their enemies; to forego pride and prejudice--these are the very people who vote for the party of war and hate and exclusion, mostly out of some masochistic need to submit to a higher authority, calling it "patriotism" in the process. Unfortunately, too many people who believe in a god and profess righteousness and moral certitude are people either so scared of their mortality that they need to be "saved" so they can live a normal life without going crazy, or they are so self-loathing that they need to be saved so they can look themselves in the mirror every morning. Both of those states of being are wretched, and if one needs to be saved to avoid them, then find God by all means; however, most "godly" people, through the complacency of being saved, or through being blinded by the mania of having found "the truth," end up being judgmental and intolerant of others--probably because of their low self-worth they were trying to fix in the first place.

  1. Killing babies (abortion) is merely "objectionable"?!! There is a difference between love and excusing. Christ loves all, including terrorists, dictators, and tyrants. That doesn't mean their actions will go unpunished.

  1. This change of attitude is long over due. The evangelicals in US have been the most ignorant and hypocritical voting block in US history. They have voted the most incompetent president to power twice in a row simply for shouting "Jesus, Jesus". How on earth can a supposedly christian block vote and stand for HATE because of someone's idealogy? How can a christian block claim to protect the lives of unborn while keeping silent as their GOP leader torture POW and invade and terrorize helpless weak nations? How can a christian block crave for capital punishment that is unevenly applied against poor minority while claiming moral holiness? I personally hate abortion and homosexuality, but I will not hate or discriminate against a homosexual or someone that commits abortion. Christians in US that supports evil policies of the GOP do not have the LOVE OF CHRIST. Hating and bashing Hillary shows highest level of immaturity, ignorance and lack of commonsence. US is a democracy and not a theocracy. No group should enforce religion on any state. GOP framed the so called war on terror against Islamist states, while they insist on making US a christian nation. This is hypocrisy without shame and thought. US is a secular nation, period. Quit the hate.
Bible call religious leaders prostitutes and harlots when they inter-mingle with politicians of their day. US evangelicals are harlots and should love than hate without partisanship. Michael Smith, KS

  1. As a Christian, I could not "hate" Hillary Clinton. The Bible teaches Christians to love and to forgive. So, I have to love her as a child of God. However, I must say that aside from the person, I don't like tactics such as the ones that she has used lately. I see a woman that seems to be focused on "I" and "herself" instead of others. Her spirit seems to have a mean streak and makes me uncomfortable. And, the Bible also teaches us to "touch not thine anointed and do thy prophet no harm". Regardless of whom I might support politically, I believe that Barack Obama has generated something new and exciting throughout the country. It speaks to something of truth and honesty that everyone should take notice and embrace going forward. Politics of destructions should discontinue. And, Christians stand firm in our faith believing that "no weapons formed against us will prosper". Everything begins and ends with love.......

  1. Finally, someone said it. The obsession with the Clintons among my fellow conservatives and (former) Republicans has caused them to lose sight of who may be our next president: Barack Hussein Obama, far more liberal than Hillary Rodham Clinton. In fact, Obama is a socialist radical! Clinton is liberal but pragmatic, Obama is as slippery as snake oil. Worst offender has been Sean Hannity, who spent seven years kissing George Bush's you-know-what, and today still says it's more important to stop Hillary than Barack. How stupid! The Clinton haters wished too hard, and will get what they wanted: No Clinton in the White House, but a phony who is a creature of the corrupt Daley machine in Chicago and who has been confirmed as a registered Muslim student in Indonesia.

I also admire the sectors of the religious right who acknowledge that the stewardship of the environment and care for the sick and poor among us are Christian duty. There are still many places where I disagree, but this is hopeful, right and a long time coming. We should all be so enlightened.

Trying to stop the wind of change directed at hope most people want to be blown by, as driven by Barak, will not do her any good if she wins the nomination. She has exerggerated her knowledge of policies affecting the lives of all from 35 years of experience working with the establishment that achieved nothing but more porverty and more disenfranchised and underprivileged people. She had her chance to turn things around.

  1. A concerned American speaks his mind:

It will be interesting to see if evangelicals will hold John McCain and his wife to the same standards that they have held the Clintons over the years. The more I read about that man and his second wife, the more my skin begins to crawl.

While John McCain was held captive in Vietnam, his first wife Carol held the family together. She was in a car accident that nearly killed her, but she still worked hard to hold the family together under the worst of circumstances.

How did John McCain repay Carol's loyalty and dedication when he returned from war? By bedding 25-year-old Cindy Lou Hensley, the daughter of a local multimillionaire beer distributor. She was just the latest in a string of floozies that McCain admits he slept with following his return from Vietnam.

McCain and Cindy Lou carried on their sordid affair behind Carol's back for about a year, then John left his wife and children for Cindy Lou. Carol was still recovering from her car accident, but John didn't care. He made Cindy Lou his second wife. Her family's beer money bankrolled his entry into politics.

Cindy Lou later founded a charity organization called the American Voluntary Medical Team. In 1989 she began stealing drugs from HER OWN CHARITY to feed an addiction to prescription drug killers. She stole the drugs by forging prescriptions in the names of her colleagues at AMVT and filling them with the assistance of a doctor who was a part of the criminal conspiracy. Cindy Lou's crimes came to light when one of her colleagues learned that Cindy Lou was forging prescriptions in his name, too. To avoid being implicated after the fact in Cindy Lou's criminal activities, the colleague turned her in to the DEA.

The doctor who was part of the conspiracy lost his medical license, but Cindy Lou was never even charged with a federal crime, let alone convicted. Senator McCain pulled strings to keep the entire sordid mess a secret and was largely successful. If you're just learning of this shameful scandal now, you have Senator John "personal responsibility" McCain to thank for your ignorance.

Can anyone imagine the kind of public outrage that would have erupted if Hillary Clinton had been caught stealing drugs from a charity she had founded? If Bill Clinton had used the power of his office to cover it up and keep her out of federal prison? Isn't that an impeachable offense?

Can you remember when Republicans stood for IMPEACHING criminals and adulterers, not putting them on the national ticket? What does the party stand for today?

There are no words to describe the disgust I feel for the Republican party right now. A few years ago I switched my registration to independent, and I'm really glad I did. I don't want to be lumped in with people who believe that John and Cindy McCain are entitled to a free ride on questions of character and personal responsibility.

What has happened to the evangelical movement? I say again, what has happened to the evangelical movement? The liberals are predicting that conservative Republicans in general, and evangelicals in particular, will be too phony, too cowardly, too hypocritical, too un-Christian and too morally bankrupt to hold their own candidates for public office to the same standards that they held the Clintons. How will conservatives and evangelicals even defend against such arguments when John "sanctity of Marriage" McCain and trashy Cindy Lou become the standard bearers of the conservative movement? Won't that PROVE the arguments of the liberals?

I don't even recognize the Republican party anymore.

I don't even know if I'll go to the polls in November. If I have to choose between a Republican Clinton and a Democrat Obama, I'll vote for Obama, or Ralph Nader, or maybe I'll write in Huckabee's name. I don't agree with Huckabee's stands on every issue, but he's a man of character and principle who says what he means and he means what he says. That's a lot more than John and Cindy Lou McCain have to offer.

I'm darn sure not going to vote to put another couple of Clintons in the White House, even if their last name is McCain.

  1. Hillary Clinton never hurt anybody, she may have taking positions that are contrary to evangelicals; but that is what we call democracy. In the other hand many people with strong religious conviction have dehumanize her in the name of righteousness, and that is hate while invoking the name of God.
It is time that we love each other, because if don't our souls ultimately will pay the final price; just remember "LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF” we can not pick and choose. It is good to know that the healing process has begun.

  1. Hate is a divisive and offensive term to the true Christian.

I do not hate people--I may hate what they believe, profess or do, but I do not hate the person. That is the mark of a true Christian.

Unfortunately, neither Democrat has a visible Christian faith worth mentioning.

McCain is not a particularly appealing prospect either.

When all the dust settles, the candidate that can keep the radical fundamentalist terrorists (Islamic) out of North America will get my vote. There is no religious tolerance by that group at all. War may not be the answer, but someone forgot to tell the Islamic terrorists and Mullahs brainwashing little orphan terrorists in training that exporting murder is not acceptable in a freedom loving world.

  1. Yes, the media and some self righteous religious types have spoken out against HIllary's charcater. They'll find out Obama is much worse if he were to get elected. He lied about Nafta - I know I'm from Canada, and he said he wouldn't vote for war, yet he did. His popularity is a result of him being slick, sly, and comptuer savvy. Hillary is a woman and it's difficult for women to get the respect they need. If she runs a firm campaign, some call her cold and uppity, when she's more reserved, she is called a fence sitter. A woman can't win, and unfortunately, the country still puts women behind men, even if they are black.

Only five of Clinton's bills are more substantive:

    16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
    17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
    18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.
    19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
    20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

There you have it-the facts straight from the Senate Record.

Now, I would post those of Obama's, but the list is too substantive, so I'll mainly categorize.

During the first (8) eight years of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced:

    233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
    112 crime fighting bills,
    97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
    21 ethics reform bills,
    15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.

His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These inculded:

**the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 (became law),
**The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, (became law),
**The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate,
**The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, (became law),
**The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, (In committee), and many more

  1. The Christian Bible tells me that love does not rejoice in evil. The opposite of love is hate. Perhaps if Hillary had shown some love to those Iraqi children and their moms a few years back I might be able to show her some forgiveness. Cluster bombs in civilian zones? Love Hillary? She is evil. Her behavior during her campaign has been to lie, to bash not only Senator Obama, but the citizens she wants to rule over. How about her getting on her knees and begging us for forgiveness. If she cared about our country she would have dropped her power quest before she began and allowed decent candidates to vie for the Democrat nomination. Selfish, egotistical, angry lady wanting a 3rd term for her womanizing husband who has lack of maturity and poor moral fiber.

  1. So.... if you are christian, do not vote for people of color? Give me a break. How much did the Clintons paid you, the so called chosen people to put out this message of yours? We should not hate one another. But when it is election time, we should use our brains and pick the right person for the job of the President of the United States.

Hey, evangelicals, Bible also says to learn from your mistakes,; it also says not to associate with crooks. In my view, Clintons are crooks and cheats. So, no excuse to support them.

  1. Are evangelicals so easily swayed? If I were one, my head would be spinning in doublespeak from what my reverend was telling me every week. The Clintons are BAD! Replublicans are Good! We love Bush! The Clintons are EVIL! Hillary is evil! McCain is EVIL! McCain Republicans are Bad! Vote for Hillary! Hillary is Good!

Who is pulling the strings? Why don't you do yourself a favor and form your own thoughts and opinions to protect yourself from the manipulation of others.

    Good luck and God Bless.

  1. this is a refreshing article and it seems that America is starting to open their eyes and see the real deal. Obama is glittler as Hillary is to gold. A wise vote is an intelligent one. Vote Hillary.

  1. The Christian Right is neither Christian, nor right. Discuss...

How exactly did Bill and Hillary Clinton 'destroy' the country's morals??? Did divorce go up? No. Did abortions go up? No. Did teen sex go up? No.

Bill Clinton might have destroyed HIS morals, but he didn't affect mine. He did however, preside over the greatest economic expansion in our history. That did affect me.

Adultery is a sin, not a crime. If it was a crime, our jails would be filled with politicians on both sides of the aisle. Americans need to stop being so sanctimonious.

  1. Yes, "God is Love", but also "thou shalt not bear false witness". Please examine the information at http://www.hillcap.org which was put together by Hillary's largest campaign contributor to her Senate election campaign. "hillcap" is short for HILLary Clinton Accountability Project. This information should be read by all Christians who care about the character of our future President (whoever that may be).

  1. Well, certainly this is code for Evangelicals and conservative Republicans in OH and TX to pull the Hillary lever today. Let's see if they answer the call to repentance and reconcilliation. And if you should succeed in resuscitating Mrs. Clinton's campaign, even in making her the democratic nominee...can you be assured she will not actually go the distance? Honestly, If she can overcome this Obama phenomenon, one could concede that she's got a fighting chance to defeat McCain as well. Perhaps you can have a hand in pulling off a miracle for Mrs. Clinton, and will get a first-hand look at divine retribution. Mysterious ways, indeed. I, for one, will be happy to suffer 4 years of Mrs. Clinton's cackling triangulation, if only to witness the hew and cry, rending of sackcloth, and gnashing of teeth. You know not what you do.

  1. About Borack H. Obama, what can be expected of him? One green and unexperienced, a lot can be expected. That's a lot of mistakes. But he has Joe Biden to help him in foreign policy matters. That's what you think. Example: Joe is a Catholic that does not want abortion of babies. But Obama wants abortion of babies. Joe is against Gays in the military. But Obama is for Gays in the military. Joe will have the number two spot ; while Obama has number one spot. Number one always supercede number two any day of the week, not just in abortion, in Gays, in military matters, foreign policy matters ,etc. But in anything that number one does not agree with or likes about it. Unless Joe wants to play hypocrite or Catholic in name only? There is a conflick here. When are we going to hear more of Obama sniffing coke in college, friends with William Ayers, Tony Rezko, rev. Wright, Ft. Pflager. etc? Obama duel double citizenship of Kenya and the USA, his not wanting his patriotism questioned, dodgeing military service, t ook 20 years to know his preacher, etc. are all news. Obama has not done anything for the middle class voter before, he's only helped himself. How did he rose to power so quickly? And why so many Islamofascists who have sworn to the destruction of America actively campaigning for Obama? What's in it for them?
