Former Joint Chiefs chairman backs Clinton

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 1, 2008 03:21 PM

Hillary Clinton announced a handful of endorsements today, and while two actresses are probably the best known, the other two supporters are likely more consequential.

Clinton said that Melanie Griffith of "Working Girl" and many other movies is backing her candidacy, along with Eva Longoria of "Desperate Housewives" fame.

Less glamorous is El Paso Mayor John Cook, but his support could help in Texas, which along with Ohio, are looming as must-win states on Tuesday for Clinton to stay in the Democratic presidential race.

"Hillary Clinton has a long history in our state: Hillary knows Texas and understands the challenges border communities like ours face," he said in a statement provided by the Clinton campaign.

The fourth endorser is a soldier -- retired General Hugh Shelton, who served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under both presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He could help Clinton press her case that she is more prepared than rival Barack Obama to be commander-in-chief -- an argument she vividly made in a much-dissected "It's 3 a.m. and your children are asleep ad" that started running in Texas on Friday.

"I’ve been with Senator Clinton when she has been with our military men and women," Shelton said in a statement. "I know from those experiences that she understands the demands and sacrifice of military life. I am confident she will always put the readiness and well being of our troops first. She is ready to be commander-in-chief.”

  1. These Generals endorsing Hillary are no stooges. They are seasoned. They have been to war and back. They know peace and they know this country. Take note Obama!

  1. i am sick and tired of listening to Obama's ''change'',''ready for a change'',''time for a change'',etc....it's this sort of ambiguity that puts stars in people's eyes, blinding them from the realities of politics.....it's time we grow up.

  1. LOL, I am a viet nam vet and where was this old general when people were talking invasion of Iraq in the first place. Suddenly these old geezers have gotten the wisdom to know who would be the easiest patsey in the white house to push the button?

  1. I'm sick of Hillary and her lies and dirty politics. No class at all. She will stoop to whatever level she has to. Hillary can't beat mccain . Obama can.

  1. I'm sick of the media bias towards Obama. Hillary Clinton is the best candidate and it is about time people started realizing that. She cares about us, and will protect us from harm. As a U.S. Senator, she served on the Senate Armed Forces Committee, and has created legislation that keeps track of the health issues of veterans.

  1. YOU MIGHT BE AN IDIOT:-)

If you think Barack Obama with little or no experience would be better than Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of collapse better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) led the greatest economic expansion, and prosperity in American history.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) went to war only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience saving the environment is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting salary's than they had ever been before or since.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..

    You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic candidate than Hillary Clinton. :-)

    Best regards

  1. A dilemma. Either Obama has read the Winograd report or he has not. If he has, then he is as afraid of the Israel Lobby as Hillary (well, she and Schumer have a certain problem). If he has not, then he is ignorant of the most important foreign policy issue that has face the US for the past 40. The second Lebanon war was a catastrophe, but guess who enthusiastically supported it and why he did?

  1. I'm praying for an Obama win Tuesday. He will be a change for the old style politics that go us into the war in Iraq. He's an intelligent, thoughtful man, a true leader, and I support him 150% percent. Not only the U.S. but the whole world will benefit with Barack Obama in the White House.
I'm a 73 year old white woman, if it matters.
Been around long enough to know a quality human being when I see and hear one.

A fair wind at your back Mr. Obama.
