Huckabee tries to hang on

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 3, 2008 12:24 PM

Mike Huckabee, looking for the miracle he likes to talk about, urged conservatives in Texas today to rally behind him and keep him alive for the Republican nomination.

"It ain't over 'til Texas says it's over," he told supporters at Southern Methodist University.

But the math facing the former Arkansas governor is foreboding.

John McCain is within fewer than 200 delegates of the 1,191 he needs to clinch the nomination, and holds commanding leads in polls in Texas and the three other states voting Tuesday. Huckabee has less than 250 delegates, according to an Associated Press count.

  1. McCain, Huckabee and --- ----. There are three Republicans running in the race. If I spelled out his name you wouldn't publish this comment.

  1. I truly believe that the press, the media is the fourth power...

And the blockage that I have perceived from the part of the mass media in America for the campaign of Huckabee, their continous and systematic refusal to present his issues, really makes me sad. Because, to me, it is a great weakening of democracy at its best.

Huckabee has mentioned what is central in the American paradigm: "Competence fosters excellence." ...And the fact that the media portrays Huckabee's refusal to quit as a blockage to Republican unity is just ludicrous.

I am really sorry for this lack of balance: on one side, tremendous sense of competence between Barack and Hilary; on the other, complete refusal to foster whatever competence could be possible in the Republican side.

  1. ALL primaries should be held on one day.

Take away the game show contestant aspect of the Media presentation....

The media talks more about "who's winning" "who's losing" than the ACTUAL political opinions that the candidates offer.

    It's ridiculous.

And yes, why isn't Ron Paul mentioned more? Let's respect the process, and start reporting on ALL the candidates

  1. Our states and country is weakening her sovereignty. This cause is happening to allow the corporate take over. It is from the inside out. Super hwy's, states becoming regions and people being told how you must think. So not a democracy. The media is bought out just like America is. Huckabee is for the good of this nation and is not dancing with the elite bunch leaving us the movie produced campaign of our front runners. I can not comprehend why so many Americans in power positions want our democracy to not be any longer. Amend the whole dang thing? The reason America was founded and fought for was the exact opposite of what they are hoping to implement. Texas and Ohio you can still shock this nation vote for MIKE HUCKABEE FOR PRESIDENT 2008

  1. I am not really responding to the blog entry, which is just filler, but to the two comments afterwards. It strikes me that the US is just the pot calling the kettle black when it calls Putin's Russia undemocratic. When other countries have powerful parties that control the media and the election process we rightly call them undemocratic, but when the US has two all powerful parties that are inherently undemocratic themselves and which control the press to just as large a degree, then we are still somehow a beacon of democracy and representative government? Time for some serious election reform and we need to start with un-partisan elections.

  1. I completely and totally agree - the Media has been the SUPER Destructive Delegate - expecially specific to the Republican race. I feel truly regretful for the complete unbalance and ultimate errosion of democracy for which the Media is the major contributor. The other side to balance that out is the people for allowing it to be so...

Unfortunately, our only option is to hope that people are more intelligent than the media and DO NOT rely on the "accuracy" (using that term hesitantly) of the media's portrayal of ANY candidiate... especially Repulican.

  1. This excellent op-ed piece about Huckabee's "mathematical impossibility" is a must-read. Finally, the media is admitting they were wrong about Mike. Hope it's not too late!

  1. I think that American citizens should be allowed to vote for Huckabee. It will probably be the last election in US history before liberal democrats like McCain, Billary or Obama surrender the country to the Mexican invaders through their various amnesty plans for the 20 million illegal aliens infesting the country.
