Jobs for Democrats, Israel for McCain

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 7, 2008 11:18 AM

Laying out the contours of the presidential race to come, Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama bemoaned the latest dire jobs report out this morning, while Republican John McCain focused on the slaying of eight students at a Jerusalem seminary on Thursday.

McCain, whose strength is foreign policy and national security, called the shooting a "heinous massacre" and strongly defended Israel's right to defend itself.

“I strongly condemn this heinous attack against innocent students," he said in a statement issued by his campaign. "No cause justifies wanton murder. This gruesome attack once again makes clear to the world that Israel faces extremists whose cause is not peace but the slaughter of Israelis."

The Clinton and Obama camps, meanwhile, focused on the loss of 63,000 jobs, the most since March 2003.

"The second straight month in a row of job loss is the biggest drop in five years and brings more bad news for an economy showing signs of recession and more heartache and struggle for the Americans I meet every day who are looking for work, can't pay the bills, or are worried that their job will be the next to disappear," Obama's statement said.

"They can't afford John McCain's promise of four more years of the very same failed Bush economic policies that have failed us for the last eight, and they can't afford another politician who promises solutions but won't change the divisive, lobbyist-driven politics in Washington. As president, I'll bring both parties together and take on the money and influence of Washington so we can restore balance to our economy, and I'll create millions of new jobs with good wages by investing in infrastructure and renewable energy."

Clinton's statement didn't mention either McCain or Obama. Instead, it highlighted her policy prescriptions to extend unemployment insurance, help homeowners in the mortgage crisis, and invest in "green-collar" jobs. She also noted that gas prices are rising with record oil prices this week.

"These are painful reminders that we need a president who is ready to be a steward of our economy, starting on day one," Clinton said. "Because behind these statistics, every job lost means there is another family missing a paycheck, another parent worried about providing for their kids, and another family in danger of losing their home."

  1. WHY are we paying Hilary, Obama & McCain when they are being paid to be members of the US Senate?
Also why are we paying Bill a $200, 000 retirement while he is campaining for his wife. Also all he does in other times making speaches for a great deal of money?

  1. As an American, I'm much more concerned about loss of jobs and homes right here than I am in the tit-for-tat slaughterfest the Israelis and Palestinians are engaging in. It's nice to see that McCain is more worried about the fate of Israelis than Americans being destroyed by his party's economic policies which he intends to continue; keep that in mind in November when the jobs keep vanishing, the foreclosures keep mounting, and American misery and suffering are growing by the day.

  1. McCain is the one candidate who has what it takes to keep us safe over the next eight years. While Clinton and Obama- especially Obama- are focusing on class envy and making promises to people that the government, rather than private industry, will deliver them job security and a healthy economy, McCain has his eye squarely on the bloodthirsty Jihadists (not Muslims) who openly proclaim their desire to convert the world to Sharia law. McCain is honest- while up in Michigan during the primary, he told the people that their outdated auto jobs would "never come back." Hillary and Obama are making promises that they know they will never be able to keep. Obama will never be able to pay for his policies, and he very well knows it. McCain promises to cut earmarks, keep the goverment running smoothly, and do everything in his power to keep us safe. I'm one democrat who is proud to vote republican for the first time in my life.

  1. It is getting time for Axe Handle Politics in this country. We are not being heard and we must rise to the occasion. Special interests own Washington and we must clean them out. I say vote any incumbent out of office, get rid of career politicians. They are all rich and do nothing but promote the wealth of the rich and powerful and deny us our basic existance. There is no one running worth the vote at this point. We need to dump, not modify NAFTA I said it along with Ross Perot jobs will leave and continue to leave for cheap wages and no environmental restrictions for the rich people who own the companies. We need to stop the War and protect our borders. We need to REMOVE the illegals and close the border now! Then we get down to taking care of Americans. God Bless America!!!

  1. Read the quotes of Clinton and Obama above. What president has ever created high paying jobs as Obama promises. Clinton is going to extend unemployment insurance, bail out those who entered into mortgages they couldn't afford and (I love this one) create "green jobs". If anyone falls for this rhetoric, they deserve to have either of these two as president. In reality, if you believe either of them, you probably shouldn't be voting.

  1. Seems to me every crisis in the world today has a common link----oil. I think our candidates should focus more on energy substitution and ways to prevent oil dependence from other countries. I don't seem to hear very much about our energy crisis from any of our candidates.

  1. I applaud McCain's comments on the heinous crimes being committed by Islamic extremists. Clinton and Obama fans may dislike/hate the Republicans, yet they do not want their children being blown up in their schools, nor buses, trains and planes being blown up in their cities. McCain is most likely to be the toughest against these extremists who by the way, even as we speak, are actively planning, hoping and praying to kill as many people in the US and the West as possible. It's not a matter of will they do it, but when.
Say what you want about the economy, it's the security stupid!

  1. thMcCain is right in standing up for the Children of Israel, what if they came to your child's school and started shooting? I am sure McCain cares about our job's and the economic future. Listen to his whole message of what he stands for before you judge the man. God said, that if you bless Israel, I will bless you. We need to pray for our leaders that they do the RIGHT Things, if not then speak up, Vote and get involved in politics. Do Something Positive for mankind and stop complaining.

  1. To the idiot above me praising John McCain for caring more about foreigners than the citizens of his own country.....lets see how damn supportive you are of him and his kind when its your job and your financial security that gets ripped out from underneath you thanks to the economic policies (or lack there of) of the Bush regime which McCain promises to keep in place. Lets see how damn supportive you are of them when the cost of their war costs you your job and gets sent to india or china because the company you work for can run their business without having to worry about paying american workers a living wage. When your home gets taken from you because the economy is so far down in the toilet that you are no longer to make your mortgage payments, when you lose everything else you have because you can no longer afford to pay for it, when you start getting pulled over more and more by the cops because writing tickets has become the state's latest idea for gaining revenue because they're now making less than half of the revenue from property taxes than they were making before, i wanna see just how damn supportive you are of these people. go thump your bibles, wrap yourselves in the flag while other people's kids are being sent off to die instead of yours, and until you start to lose things you own through no fault of your own, i suggest you keep your mouth shut.

I would like, if possible, for him to be specific about his plan, and where do we get the money to pay for his project and why he think he can create such big number of job with good pay. The war spending in Iraq creates jobs also, if we withdraw our military from Iraq will trigger massive lay off, there is no money saving from Iraq to support his project.

  1. Israel needs hour help! We need to send troops to help Israel! They're already in the region so it would not be difficult for us to engage Gaza and the West Bank. How can we as Americans worry about our jobs and economy when Israel is being attacked by young men with guns?

Only after Israel is secure should we as Americans turn our efforts to our economy.

  1. Will lose more jobs when this happens,John McCain is right .In news that is sure to send a shiver down the spines of Americans, a senior U.S. general warned Thursday that terrorist organization Al Qaeda is planning to attack the United States. The organization feels a “sense of urgency,” General Gene Renuart said, as the leadership of the group responsible for the September 11 terrorist attacks looks to show results after a series of threats.

  1. Republicans have not shipped your jobs overseas, this whole trend started in the 90s under the Clinton administration, and it is called globalization. Read Thomas Friedman's book, "The World is Flat" and you will have a better understanding on the dynamics of the world we live in today. We must use our competitive advantage as a country to progress into new avenues. If we had this isolationist/protectionist mentality 100+ years ago, we would still be an agriculturally based country, while the rest of the world surpassed us. The Democrats want to create programs during economic slowdowns, which takes the money out of the private sector and productive individuals who are the ones who create economic growth. The only way you climb out of a recession and sustain economic growth is to keep taxes low, and promote trade with other countries.

  1. The U.S. economy has been in down spin, 47% of home equity in real estate value has been lost , housing foreclosures have hit the stratosphere, the dollar is only 65% worth a a Euro -and the imported crude oil as a result has reached
more than $ 105 a barrel- and Nobel Laureates say that the billions spend on Iraq and Afghanistan have drained the U.S. economy, has increased our foreign
debt, as well as our public debt. We are at a stage of stagflation unlimited, but
John McCain not only has no clue, but he also claim experience and leadership
qualities as George Bush's republican sidekick that brought us to this black page of U.S. history since the Great Depression.

McCain is a loose ideological cannon politically that couldn't even handle his
behavior with a female lobbyist, and he was saved by his alert staff who kept her away. But America want a president who would be able to think and make
decisions on his own -rather than be babysitted by his staff. And the dire state of the U.S. economy today, and a global anti -U.S. hostility from our unilateral
and hostile foreign policy requires more than a Barry Goldwater ideologue
copycat at the white house with nursing home brainwaves. Nikos Retsos,

The fact that you work in an over-saturated field has nothing to do with republican leadership. Or any leadership for that matter. Oh, and if you're 'pining' for the good ole days of Clilnton, he sat on a Tech bubble that had nothing to do with him, and then sat and watched it blow up right before he left office. You think mutual funds are bad now??? You apparently weren't ALIVE in 1999.

  1. Racial Bias

McCain says "No cause justifies wanton murder. This gruesome attack once again makes clear to the world that Israel faces extremists whose cause is not peace but the slaughter of Israelis."

While any murder of civilians is appalling. Over 100 innocent Palestinians were massacred by Israel last week. Did we ever hear McCain say:

  1. Mr. Hamzawi, and I use the term loosely...If Mexicans in Juarez were shooting missiles across the border into El Paso, what do you think the USA would do? Guess what ..the same thing Israel did. Stop firing rockets at innocent people and there will be no need to cross the border and try to stop it. Keep firing rockets and people will do what they need to do to stop them. Life with rockets raining down is not a fun life. There's no reason the people launching the rockets should have a fun life either.

  1. We need someone who can handle both aspects of the job. A good economy is not too helpful to me if I am slaughtered by terrorists because we had a President who doesn't take security seriously. I also don't appreciate having been robbed by bush, and the economy being thrown in the tank, in the name of "security", which to him meant no-bid contracts to cronies. Clinton provides a good middle ground, but if she's out I'll settle for McCain. Security is stil a trump issue, because there is only so much the President can do for the economy's ups and downs anyway.

  1. I agree with Mike above that Israel should not receive a dime of US taxpayer's money. We should trade with them, treat them like any other country, but not send them any money as foreign aid. We should also not send money to Egypt, the PA, or any other country.

In exchange for not sending Israel any money, we should remove ourselves from the "peace process," allow Israel to defend itself the way it wants, and not judge them. Israel is not telling us what to do with the Mexican border, Iraq, or Afghanistan, and we shouldn't tell them how to handle Hamas or otherwise defend themselves. Personally, I think Israel should raze the gaza strip completely, but that's one guy's opinion.

Yes, it was a joke. I'm really glad you saw the humor in it. What's not so funny is that I've noticed with the people who support Israel is that they stoop really low in their posts.

They resort to calling people "idiots" and saying things like "Mr. Hamzawi, and I use that term loosely..." somehow questioning the posters manhood? Yet others resort to blatant plagiarism by copying/pasting from news sources. Who are the real idiots here?

  1. I join Senator McCain's in condemning the "heinous massacre" of innocent Israeli students. Killing of innocent humans is the most despicable and cowardly act. It has no place in civilized society. However, I would like to ask Senator McCain some questions. Is One life better or superior than the other? Does he believe that made all humans were created equal? Where was he when hundreds of thousands were being slaughtered in Africa, Bosnia, and most recently hundreds of innocent Palestinian women and children killed by Israeli forces. Is he only pandering for the Jewish vote, as almost every US politician have been doing.
Oh, I remember, those getting killed were Muslims and no one cares if die! After all
they are not human, they are the perceived enemy.

  1. It would be kind of nice if Senator McCain could manage to summon half the moral outrage he is expending on the Jerusalem shooting, and apply it to any one of the depressingly familiar mass shootings in this country. Somehow, I have a sinking feeling that the straight talk express would rather veer off the road then have to confront the ugly reality of uncounted thousands of guns being in the hands of people with murderous intentions.

It is so much easier to strike an heroic pose when talking about a massacre that takes place on the other side of the world.

  1. It's an oversimplification to change "Israelis" for "Palestinians" in Sen. McCain's statement to get a point across--the terms, the histories, the imperitives are not the same. And the fact that a militant walked into a Jewish SEMINARY to condict these atrocities does not just underscore but ILLUSTRATES EXPLICITLY that the intifadahs are grounded in the destruction of Jewish identity and not any vague, changing understanding of "occupation". I do not agree with the settlers who thrawrt the will of moderate (the majority) Israelis and settle West Bank lands in these times of hot blooded discussion, but we don't see the Israeli military seeking out purported terrorists in their Mosques. They go after the rockets launchers.

  1. Both Barark and Michelle Obama are our Heros, for speaking the truth!!!

Michelle Obama makes $300.000 a year in Chicago. She is not proud of America, and there is nothing wrong about that. She entitled her emotion and opinion.
I don’t even make $60.000 a year, why Should I proud of America!? Not even 20% of her salary !!
To those (VAST, vast majority of you) who earn less than $250.000 a year,
Are you still proud of America?! You are less than 2 paychecks away from jail.
You live paycheck by paycheck low life, if you heat your home to a decent tempuature. You would run out of fund for food. Your credit card debt, DEBT is steadily increase Month after month, gas price rise just 19 cents, you HAVE to adjust your life style !! Because you are extremely poor for whole life. And ironically, you are a proud of American. Are you stupid or what??Stupid majority ? I have reason, compelling reason NOT to be proud of American !
I am very Confident about this! No, I am not proud of America at all !!

Because I like thousands people I meet on bus, on T, every day are under class, working poor Americans. We are not proud our paycheck by payecheck low life at all ! Are you a proud fool ???

  1. Whether the state that calls itself Israel can adequately defend its existence is immaterial to me. What is material are the trillions of US dollars spent on it and for it and the countless lives of US service men and women lost in the ongoing and ill-directed conflicts between them and their provoked enemies. Enough is enough for America. If you vote for a pro-Israeli politician, then you vote for the demise of America.

    Politicians take note.
