Kerry criticizes Clinton commander-in-chief ad

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 3, 2008 10:19 AM

Senator John F. Kerry says Hillary Clinton's much-remarked-upon 3 a.m. phone call TV ad is a deceptive "fear tactic" because she's never faced such a crisis.

And when she has faced war-or-peace decisions in the US Senate, she not only whiffed on Iraq, but she also flubbed on Iran, the 2004 Democratic nominee argued.

"The fact is that she had a red phone moment, as Barack Obama said," Kerry said on CNN's "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer" on Sunday. "Her red phone moment was on the war in Iraq, and she chose the Bush course, the wrong course.

"She had a red phone moment in Iran," Kerry continued, referring to a resolution last year that declared the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group. "When Senator Dodd, Senator Biden, Senator Obama, myself opposed the policy, she chose the Bush policy on Iran. She had a red phone moment.

"The fact is that Barack Obama comes to this race with more experience than George Bush, Ronald Reagan, or Bill Clinton had in foreign policy at the national level. And the fact is that he has proven that it's his judgment that is correct. That's what the American people are voting for, and I believe they will see clearly that's a scare tactic. And in fact, it raises an issue which falls, in my judgment, in Barack Obama's favor."

Kerry also tried a little humor to deflect the ad, which features sleeping children and a ringing phone and asks who voters want answering the phone in the White House for a middle-of-the-night crisis.

"You know, most of the time I think people are going to hear that phone ringing, and they're going to rush to answer the phone and not see the ad," he said.

  1. So we are suppose to care what Kerry thinks??
Neither he nor T Kennedy amounted to anything when running in the race
Does Kerry intend to follow the will of his state and back Hillary???
Kerrys influence in America is no more now than it was when he ran for office
His wife like BOs has not helped in any way
    Kerry should step back
Nobody liked him then and nobody likes him now
Democrats should remember that had he not been the nominee a democrat just may have taken the last election
Something to ponder when deciding between HC and BO
Has Kerry taken the time to see that the dirty side of BO is just starting to show
Wait until he is the nominee he will fail as badly as Kerry did and his wife will help take him down just like the ketchup lady

  1. While I disagree with Kerry's assertion, I respectfully accept the fact that some democrats like Kerry would prefer to fight terrorists in the streets of Boston rather than engaging the terrorists on their own soil.

  1. Very interesting because Kerry voted "yes" for the same resolution on Iraq that Clinton voted on. Also, Obama came back with an ad very similiar, using sleeping children and phones ringing. So it's OK for Obama to "copy-cat" Clinton's ad and get away without a comment. I think the Democratic Party, with the help of the media, are trying their hardest to eliminate Clinton from continuing her campaign. It's amazing how Obama gets a free ride.

  1. Is there anyone out there who is less signifiicant than John Kerry? If he had mounted any sort of fight against the republicans, there would not have been a vote. And by the way, John, didn't you vote for the resolution, too??

I think you should look at who your constituents supported in the primary. Signed a former supporter.

  1. Kerry continues to ride on the shirt tails of people for political purposes. Now he is on to Hillary's strings. The only way he can get exposure or attention is through adverse comments. Does he vote, what has he accomplished, what does he do?

  1. How is it Kerry opposed the policy when he voted to authorize the use of force?

  1. John Kerry has so little credibility in criticizing Hillary Clinton that it's laughable. Mr. "I voted for it -- right before I voted against it" should probably not make any commentary, since whoever he touts would be tainted.

  1. It is sad to think that most of the people offering negative comments about Kerry will go out and vote for him again, because he will be the democratic candidate from Massachusetts. The fact that he has not accomplished much of anything regarding legislation will not alter their voting preference. Gotta vote democratic no matter what.

  1. if we all seem to dislike Kerry so much, why is it that we this state continously votes for him? He and Kennedy both need to go . . it's time for some change in this state. For 1 . . do away with the excise tax!

  1. So far, no one has dealt with the substance of Kerry's remarks. All we get is ad hominem swipes at him. Sounds much like Ms. Clinton's increasingly nasty a nd sacastic belittlement of her opponent.
