McCain's VP pick could determine vote
The most fateful decision that John McCain could face is who to pick as his vice presidential nominee, recent polling suggests.
SurveyUSA polls across the country, conducted March 14-16, say that, depending on the state, between 30 and 40 percent of voters would support McCain depending who his number two is.
And in a recent Gallup poll, 11 percent of Republicans said they would vote for the Democratic nominee or a third-party candidate if McCain does not choose a vice president considerably more conservative than he is.
While McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee, has just started the vetting process, quite a few names have been bandied about. Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, threw his own name into the pot recently, saying it would be an honor.

And there are many Democrats who would vote for McCain if he doesn't pick an ultra-conservative running mate! At this point, with the Democrats doing themselves in, it's McCain race to lose. Pick well, John, and do honor to those of us in the ideological middle.
The main stream media really made Romney out to be a bad choice. He is the real deal.... a man of his word with the experience to get the job done right.
While living in the Seattle area I met a large group of attendees of the Salt Lake Olympics. They couldn't talk enough about the great event that Mr. Romney was responsible for. He would really help McCain....
Huckabee would be a good choice; he speaks to the average person, has not alienated the left, and could bring in the social conservatives. He is well liked and has supporters ready to fight for him. He was the first Republican to notice there was a problem with the economy and speak about the effect the downturn was having on middle America. He will not ship more jobs to China and will rebuild our infrastructure, always putting our country first by using American-made products. His fair tax will give us all more money to spend and allow corporations to hire more people here, rather than setting up operations in countries where no taxes are required. He sees real problems that real people have, because he grew up with a very little. He believes that leaders are to serve rather than lord over their voters. He can bring the change we need in America!
Romney's Economics with McCain's Military experience would be an strong team. Romney would be the only viable candidate who would BRING IN THE VOTE.

No Mitt, No Money
Huckabee has a huge grassroots following and we believe he has earned a place on the ticket and that Huckabee and McCain "fill in the blanks" nicely for each other and make one fromidable team!! Huckabee can bring the youth votes, blacks, conservatives and evangelicals and even some crossover democrats! His communication skills could be put to good use as the vp. McCain and Huckabee have great "chemistry" and genuinely seem to like each other. A huge plus!!! Huckabee and McCain share the same character and determination that kept them in the race til the end!!! Both told to quit, neither did and they were the last two standing...and they did it with respect and didn't bash each other. To be admired.....
Huckabee would be good - he has personality like Reagan did. Romney would be a losing venture - they'd just play back the clips of his dirty ads against mccain - the last thing in the world americans want is an ultra conservative poseur who says anything to anybody.
Gov Crist has personality. So does Jack Kempf. Kay Bailey Hutchison and Elizabeth Dole intrigue. Colin Powell would be a reassuring presence on the ticket. Christopher Cox is beguiling. So many to choose from. But both Romney and Rice represent the old politics of snowing the people.
That's why Huckabee will last - he doesn't believe in hoodwinking you - he's just himself - with a wink.
I think Huckabee lost a lot of respect among conservative voters with his manipulative and hypocrtical strategy against Romney. In addition, I don't think Huckabee has the ability, training, or experience required to lead the world's largest economy. He's a great spiritual leader and inspirational speaker, but he's no VP.
Romney didn't "throw his own name" into the pot- he simply answered a question from Sean Hannity saying that if he were asked, he'd definitely do his best with the job. Any Republican would have answered similarly. Comment #2 really hit the nail on the head- the press has hated Romney from the get-go. But, since when have conservatives obeyed or even paid heed to the press?
Mitt Romney would not only add talent and experience to the ticket; he would add credibility, a positive attitude, and the courage to do what the circumstances demand. We have never had to second guess his motives for the decisions he has made. We need his example and his integrity. This will tell us if McCain is able to put his prejudice behind him and put our country first and foremost. I hope so.
Huckabee? Let me make this promise: If the huckabigot is ANYWHERE near the ticket, McCain will lose the ENTIRE west. That would include: CA, WA, ID, OR, WA, AZ, MT, WY, NM and CO. He would also lose in the Northeast and the east. With huck as his running mate, he might as wll tattoo a big L on his head for LOSER, as that is what the huckabigot will bring to the ticket. Losing.
Don't give the line that huck is 'like reagan'. Reagan was a respector of ALL people and faiths. Huck is a loser who can't see beyone his bible.
Oh, and Utah will be blue so fast, you'll be amazed, if huck is on the ticket.
Oh, and Utah will be red so fast, you'll be amazed, if huck is on the ticket. WE DONT LIKE HIM
What about Michael Steele? Lt. Gov. of Maryland. Check this guy out!!! A shoe in.
Where is the imagination here? The choice is between Huckabee and Romney? I hope not! And what's this about Huckabee not alienating the left - on what planet is that true? We need to realize that any VP could end up being President, and choose accordingly. There are some great moderate Senators out there. I'm sick of the polarization and the drum-beaters. Let's get back to sanity, and have an administration that both accepts and cares about ALL of our people, not just those who scream the loudest on whatever issue.
I believe that Huckabee would compliment John Mc Cain because both men are honest to the bone and are dedicated to serving their country to the best of their abilities including all Americans regardless of their political party.
Huckabee? Honest? ha ha ha ha!...whatever. I think he cheated alot of people out of their money, even when the math was clear he was not going to win the nomination. Dishonest is the most accurate description of Huckabee.
Better to lose some of the Western states...Than not win any in the South...The south will not vote for Romney....
McCain needs to go conservative in picking a vp. It WILL matter this election season. Otherwise, many of his votes will go to Clinton. He might stand a better chance against Obama, but I don't know.
I'm not quite understanding why so many Mormons seem to hate Huckabee. I dislike Romney only because he hasn't been consistent on social issues, but not because he's Mormon. That's ridiculous.
Huckabee has well proven leadership skills and ability. Excellent in economy. He would be very complimentary to McCain's presidency. Huckabee and McCain have a lot to offer each other and Huckabee is calm and can keep a cool head. Knows how to work across the aisle.
And choosing someone that is wealthy will give Dems fuel. McCain needs to pick someone that isn't wealthy.
Gotta have a conservative to win the south and much of the midwest.
Nobody liked Romney during the primaries--and things haven't changed. You can't buy love! Huckabee has a huge following, has the experience and charisma and he's honest. A McCain/Huckabee ticket would be the best choice for America!
McCain-Romney is a democratic ticket. Both have liberal leanings. Look at their records/accomplishments not their words. Romney spent so much of his own money to fund his unpopular campaign (he lost so many states) I'd hate to see what he'd do with a budget funded by taxpayers! I think he should go help the Chinese with their Olympics...or help Bain Capital with the Clear Channel buy-out...
McCain has done absolutely nothing to court social conservatives. I will not vote for him because he's the least liberal. At this point I'll be writing in my first choice for President in November. Most republicans I know are dismayed that we are stuck with McCain! If he picks a TRUE SOCIAL conservative I would begrudgingly vote for him.
I am a black Iowa Republican (rare commodity) who voted for Huckabee.
If McCain does not pick Huck as his VP, he will make things easy for me. I will hold my nose and vote for Obama. If Mormons can vote en masse for Romney, surely a black Republican can be allowed to vote for Obama.
It has now been established that a woman or a black person can be a viable presidential candidate. Hillary and Obama have opened the door. Condi Rice can now cross that threshold. She has mastered political science. Her position as secretary of state has made her the most powerful woman and the most powerful black person in the entire world. No matter who the democrats nominate, her next logical step is to be the running mate of John McCain. This combination for the republicans will assure victory for it will draw the votes of the independents, the feminists and the blacks. She will succeed President McCain in 2016, if not before. May President Rice serve us well. James E. Gambrell
The media is exactly correct this time, yes Romney is a Financial guru on the 3 leg stool. Yep, Romney knows how to "SPEND" money. Romney has a unique gift in life to figure out how to "SPEND" money. It's amazing how this affluent business CEO knows how to "SPEND" money. Not too many times in life do we get a VP rolling down Wall Street that knows how to "SPEND" money. No sir. Just think he spent $100 million in the primaries, and look what he got in return (nothing).
Pull you head out of the sand, heck Romney couldnt budget a Lemonaid stand if the entire world was counting on him. Wow, what a Financial wizard, this guy gots lots of Fiancial talent to SPEND money. America needs a talented person like Romney to get the buget back in line and us out of recession. Just SPEND more money, yep!
Just look at all the other CEO's that make their companies go deep in the red on near bankruptcy, walk away with $200 million in severence and get hired by another company for a higher salary of $250 million. That's how it works, the big establishment could care less of the average worker, they just want the big wigs and the cocktail drinks.
Tell John McCain you will not vote for him if he picks money hungry Romney.
Ok, what about Newt Gingrich for VP? He has experience, and he's very conservative. Granted, I don't like Romney, he's just not believeable. But guys, we have to bring this party together or we're gonna end up with a democrate in November. You know what they say, "Divided we fall".
If Senator McCain is really in this to win, he will not hesitate to choose a wonderful, intelligent, personable, winner, Gov. Mike Huckabee.
Many will support the ticket with Gov. Huckabee on it.
Many, wil never support the ticket if MITT ROMNEY is on it.
I live in Massachusetts Mitt Romney was governor for four years. The state senate and house of representatives was control by the democrats. The members of the house and senate will tell you that he did not have them come in to his office to discuss any pending bills. In government you must learn to comprise. He could not and did not in the four years he was in office, All he care for was to run for President. The Republicans in Massachusetts were the one's would told the real true about Mitt to the nation. His flip, flopping on important issues. He never really traveled to the cities and towns of Massachusetts he would sent his lt. governor.
Common people, Think outside the box! Stop framing the choice as Rommney-Huckabee for vp. What about Newt Gingrich, Gov Charlie Crist, or bring Colin Powell in from the cold. Or what is Clinton looses, should he pick Elizabeth Dole?
I think Romney is the way to go ... has name recognition and the experience , which the 2 democrats surely dont have !
McCain has done very little to earn my vote or bring the party together. His choice of VP will certainly be a deciding factor for myself and for many in our party. We are at war and in an economic crisis. I feel it is in our best interest to have the most knowledgable and capable people in office. We need someone that understands the economy, will work to secure our borders and can work to improve our relationships with the nations of the world. We don't need a drinking buddy or someone who responds to difficult questions with a joke. The problems that we face as a nation are no laughing matter. The fact that Mitt Romney spent lots of his own money on his campaign tells me that he fervently believes in what he was campaigning for. Come on McCain - please give me a reason to vote Republican in November.
This evangelical conservative would be highly disappointed if McCain picks Huckabee for VP. I have never witnessed a candidate so blatantly campaign for the VP spot as Huckabee. I would have never thought that I would have supported a mormon a few months ago (truly whacked-out theology) but Romney so out-classed the other candidates in every area that I truly believe he would have been the best president. I think most conservatives agree. He would be the wisest choice for McCain if McCain is man enough to do it.
How about Jodi Rell, the CT Governor with sky-high approval ratings? ))
We could rebuild the Republican Party in the Northeast again!!!
*** BREAKING NEWS ***
The alliance between McCain and Huckabee is growing stronger. News reports indicate John McCain's family is related to Mike Huckabee's family.
Mike Huckabee's wife, Janet Huckabee's maiden name is also McCain. The alliance formed long before the primary debates began last year.
Both men were constantly complimenting each other during the debates while pressuring Romney out of the race. The strategy worked and now these two men are on their way to the White House.
President John McCain and Vice President Mike Huckabee are posed to create real positive change for America. A war vetern to crush the terrorist camp once and for all and a pro-family / pro-life vetern to bring the American family up to higher ground.
And with McCain's straight talk express to eliminate pork barrel spending and Huckabee's ten year experience as one of America's best Governor brings fresh outlook on the financial markets.
Watch the strong family alliance between the two men become more evident in the upcoming months.
Huckabee should be McCain's VP. He won the South. He won the Evangelicals, and he is very conservative. He stands for God's principles such as protecting the unborn babies who have no choice or voice, and traditional marriage between a man and a woman. Huckabee has shown he is not a quitter and that he is a man of his word. He STILL has a very high approval rating in Arkansas...sixty five percent approval. Huckabee pulled off coming in second on a small budget of money. He knows how to get far on very little. He'd be great for the economy. Huckabee cares about the people who struggle. He knows how it is to struggle. He wants to help us by getting rid of the IRS. Huckabee was lied about by the media because of the BIAS of the talk radio conservative hosts. They were for Mitt Romney. Romney lied about Huckabee in the tv ads. He lied about McCain, too. Romney lied to the people about his views on marriage and abortion. He changed his views depending on who he was talking to. http://www.trueromney.com
Mitt Romney would not make a good VP. He has a seventy percent disapproval rating in his home state of Massachussets where he was Governor. Massachussets was worse off at the end of his term than when he started. The media lied to people about Mitt being great for the economy. Mitt raised fees the same year he accused Huckabee of raising taxes. Same difference. Huckabee raised taxes four times because he was forced to, but he cut them ninety four times in his ten years as Governor. Mitt claimed that McCain was NOT a conservative during his campaign, and then turns around and endorses McCain making a statement that McCain is a conservative. Mitt is a flip flopper and would NOT make a good president or VP. Huckabee sticks to his word. If McCain wants to win, Huckabee is the best choice. He can bring together the South and the Evangelicals. If McCain picks Romney, I know I won't be voting for McCain and neither will many others. We want a true conservative as VP if we can't have a true conservative as President. Romney is not a conservative. http://www.trueromney.com
Romney!
1) Economy - he is true fiscal conservative
2) Has money which McCain desperately needs.
3) Wants to reign in entitlement programs (McCain wants to cut spending to lower taxes)
4) Broad national appeal (NE, NW, will get the South anyway)
5) The large majority of the Christian conservative base will support a Mormon. He lives his life very respectably. The truth is, no one really cares if he flip-flopped on abortion or other social issues. What people really care about, including "Christians", is there MONEY - just observe anyone you know.
6) Despite knowing when to leave the race in a more dignified way than Huckabee, he still got the second largest number of delegates. The only reason Huckabee won what he got was because he was in a two-man race.
A woman will guarantee the title..... preferably from Penn or Ohio, but Tenn will do.
And the winner is......Marsha Blackburn, Tenn
count on it, and a McCain victory!
I hope to G-d its Rudy or Romney and NOT Huckabee. Huck might just make me jump overboard because I can not STAND social con, fiscal libs!! He is a nice guy, though just trashy policies
McCain picks former Reagan official to head VP search,
http://thehill.com/campaign-2008/mccain-selects-former-reagan-official-to-head-vp-search-2008-05-23.html
Anyone but Huckabee! I can't stand his bigoted politics. I think the scripture says, "by their fruits ye shall know them." His fruit is rotten!
I am impressed with former PA Governor Tom Ridge. He has an interesting public, miltitary and private sector background. Does anyone have an opinion on him? He was supposedly condidered a short list candidate for VP in 2000. Not impressed with Huckabee. While likeable personality-wise, our nation needs a candidate who can reach out beyond the evangelicals. Though he would ensure the Mormaon vote, Mitt Romney's message has been inconsistent throughout his political career.
