Obama goes on offensive

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 21, 2008 11:15 AM

Barack Obama's campaign, after a week of largely playing defense over his spiritual mentor's sermons, is going on the offense with a vengeance this morning with a memo accusing Hillary Clinton of "a history of misleading voters."

The memo cites a new Gallup poll in which 53 percent of Americans say Clinton is not trustworthy -- 63 percent for Obama and 67 percent for presumptive Republican nominee John McCain -- and argues that such a low honesty score makes Clinton unelectable in the fall.

"After eight years of an untrustworthy President, can we really expect that a candidate who is viewed as so much more dishonest than McCain will somehow be able to beat him?" the memo asks.

Then, the memo goes on to cite Clinton's newly released schedules as first lady to assert that they cast grave doubt on her claims of experience and accomplishment on family leave, foreign policy, and other issues. The memo also accuses Clinton of dishonesty on the North American Free Trade Agreement, of disingenuousness on the disputed Florida and Michigan primaries, and of abetting a false rumor that Obama is Muslim during a recent "60 Minutes" interview.

And after Clinton long chiding the press for treating her more aggressively than Obama, his campaign is seeking to turn the tables.

"It's time for Hillary Clinton to explain these inconsistencies -- and to put an end to the dishonesty," the memo says. "As she campaigns in working-class areas of Pennsylvania, will she finally admit to workers that she was one of the chief proponents of NAFTA? Will she admit to even a basic understanding of the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002? Will she drop FMLA from her list of accomplishments? And if she won’t, will the press call her on it?"

UPDATE: The Clinton campaign just responded with a memo of its own, saying that Obama is "desperate to change the subject" and is resorting to negative politics.

The memo says Obama, by not agreeing to re-votes in Florida and Michigan, is disenfranchises millions of voters. It says by giving the New York Times a photo of his controversial former pastor -- the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. -- with former President Bill Clinton at a White House event with dozens of pastors, Obama is retreating from his Tuesday speech "calling for a high-minded conversation on race."

The memo also accuses some Obama partisans of trying to link the Clinton campaign to the breach of his personal passport records.

"So it’s not a pretty sight – it’s all part of a pattern of just words," the Clinton memo says. "Senator Obama talks about voter participation while actively disenfranchising millions. He calls for high minded debates while practicing lowdown politics. He promises a different kind of campaign while attacking Hillary’s character. He promises transparency while hiding basic info and stonewalling the press. It’s no wonder that Americans are coming to see that for all of his lofty rhetoric, Senator Obama’s candidacy is really just words."

I have been sitting back reading various blogs and I have to say, I am amazed how anyone could see Barack Obama as prejudice or having bigoted views for having an association with Rev. Wright. BARACK IS HALF WHITE, for God's sake. Just as much white as black, so are you saying he hates himself? Secondly, everyone is so down on him about his association with Paster Wright, well Bill Clinton invited Wright to a White House breakfast which I'm sure, many pastors in America will never sit at a presidential breakfast UNLESS they are close friends or advisors with the president. So is that saying Bill Clinton is a bigot, too? Wright went to this breakfast before Obama was even a blip on the political radar screen. WHAT DOES ALL THIS SAY? To me, the whole Obama fiasco is bulls^&* and way over the top dramatics. The man is the best candidate for the job as president. If you really get past your superficiality, you will have to agree. He has weathered this dumb crisis and I have faith, he will think just as levelheaded in any crisis put before him as the United States of America's next president.

Is Patrick Kennedy that is in the article about the breach of Obama's passport the same one that came out and endorsed Hillary ?

This is a huge moment in social politics. A prominent member of a racially driven organization, who's leader pompously speaks out against other races, is a serious presidential candidate. I realize that political correctness has taught whites to accept racial disparagement from blacks, while being unable to return fire; however, this presents the element of presidential candidacy. This isn't the due process of affirmative action or a college instructor passing a black student that performed failing work, which is the accepted protocol that has been embraced by society. The exposure of this element granting passage to a presidential candidate will cause national reflection on this code of behavior. If this individual doesn't step down, or is accepted by voters, racism will have to be openly accepted amongst all public figures. A politician will say what it takes to get elected, but the facts are eventually exposed. An active member of a racist organization can't hide his or her true ambitions forever. They always get into trouble. They don't run for president. It's what you do when no-one is looking that really shows who you are. A well spoken liar is just a well spoken liar.

Obama claim:
Obama’s religion. In a “60 Minutes” interview, Senator Clinton refused to confirm that Senator Obama is a Christian, even though she knows the facts.
Truth:
The fact is, if you look at Clinton's exchange with Kroft in its entirety, which lasted less than one minute, I count eight separate times in which she either plainly denied the false claim that Obama was Muslim, labeled that suggestion to be a smear, or expressed sympathy for Obama having to deal with the Muslim innuendo. Media Matters' Eric Boehlert

Obama claim:
Her position on NAFTA. Clinton tells Ohio voters that she has “been a critic of NAFTA from the very beginning.” Yet her own schedules show that as First Lady she attended at least four meetings to advocate for its original passage.
Truth:
I was actually there in the Clinton White House during the NAFTA fight and I must tell you Hillary Clinton was extremely unenthusiastic about NAFTA. And I think that’s putting it mildly. I’m not sure she objected to all the provisions of it but she just didn’t see why her husband and that White House had to go and do that fight. She was very unhappy about it and wanted to move on to health care. So I do think there’s some justification for her camp saying, you know, she’s never been a great backer for NAFTA. [David Gergen, Anderson Cooper 360, 2/25/08]

Obama claim:
Her role in passing the Family and Medical Leave Act. Clinton credits herself with “helping to pass” the Family and Medical Leave Act as First Lady. But the 11,000 pages of schedules don’t contain a single mention of her involvement in the issue.
Truth:
Hillary was instrumental in getting the Family and Medical Leave Act signed into law. We at the National Partnership for Women & Families as well as other family and labor groups had been pushing for the law for nearly 10 years. Hillary brought her work and experience on behalf of children and working families to the campaign trail in 1991 and 1992 and knew the importance of getting this legislation passed immediately. Two weeks after President Clinton was inaugurated, it was done. Debra Ness, President of the National Partnership for Women and Families

Read it and weep Obama supporters - it's your candidate that will tell lies to suit his political purposes. I am originally from Arkansas and I have seen first hand her dedication to America and American families.

Obama isn't the person he presented himself to be. He wanted to hide issues until after he was nominated. Well, he could not allay the lingering doubts of Americans and he could not close the deal. He has created havoc with his lack of candor. He will never get my vote - not now and not down the road.

On matters of judgement and appropriate action under pressure why does
no one question Hillary Clintons lack of action and total denial of her
husbands inappropriate behavior. If she cannot maintain control over
her personal life do we really want to put her in charge of our
futures? In the face of her husbands disgracing her and their marriage all
she does is stand by grinning sheepishly. Is this because it's
politically advantageous? How creepy is that? Her denial and lack of action
with her own crisis is profoundly reminicent of "Hop Along" reading his
little goat book.

Obama can't even fix the hatred and racism that exists at his own church, and is breeding another generation of racists when he and his children attend the TUCC. Not sure how you expect him to bring the nation together. He doesn't practice what he preaches.

The Constitution of the United States, Art. III, defines treason against the United States to consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid or comfort.

there is no sane reason to vote for obama for the democratic nomination, and in the general election, unless your idea of sanity involves watching the country go down in flames. I will freely admit to not wanting obama in the white house, based on his pastor's remarks. his pastor is an evil shill masquerading as a holy man, and has been spewing hate-filled rhetoric for the last several years - all in obama's presence. but - if you switched obama with any other black candidate, the same issues would surface. do you think wirght's words are unique? they are beiing repeated in every black church across the land, because the black churches know that america is not listening. well, perhaps we should start listening, harder and better than ever before. You want to root out potential traitors and disloyalty in america? start there, in the black church and in the black community. where else will you find an outsized sense of victimhood and greivance, completely disproportional to any rea or perceived slight? where else will you be greeted with resentment and truculence because of the community's own failures? that is the classic recipe for disloyalty, leading to treason. Michelle obama's words are demonstrative of this sentiment - harvard educated, (supposedly) well-bred - and resentful of America, for no good reason. Take her sentiment, and multiply that by millions, and you have a disaster in the making. and we're contemplating putting someone of that community, who has openly expressed and supported treasonous sentiment, into the leadership of the country?

read the above definition, and think it over.

Why do people not mention that Rezko was being funded by an exiled Iraqi living in London who was charged with illegally doing business with Saddam Hussein? Is this why his campaign is so quick to jump on any mention that Hussein is his middle name? Looks like B. Hussein Obama got a good deal on his house thanks to a money trail leading to SADDAM HUSSEIN. No wonder why he was so opposed to the Iraq invasion.

some of the comments written here against Obama seems to stem from either ignorance or Clinton's political machine under the guise of everyday americans. Why are we still stuck with the old politics when we are given the chance to experience a change for the better? Why are we diverting from the issues of the clinton's dishonesty when its written in black and white for the public to accertain for themselves? Personally, I'm tired of all the lies and propagandas. Somebody said," Obama's gotta pay his due cos he lacks experience and he can run again in a few years" or something to that effect. My Question is, ... do we have to destroy the country that we all loved so dearly further before we realize that its time to change? There's no time like the present. What I really want is a New America NOW. A New US of A NOW. The rebirth of a great nation that America once was, NOW. I say, it is time to come together and heal, close the great divide and change for the better. Lets transcend the dirty politics of old and prove to the world, prove to ourselves that hope is not all talk. Let's give hope a chance to transform those talks into actions. Let's make it happen! :) God Bless America!

And as a bonus, we get Bill probably our greatest president ever, when she takes control of the White House.

I'm young but for the first time in my life, I care more about this election then even going to school. I believe in my soul that Obama is a representation of a positive future for my generation. I'm fed up with the racism of the older generations. I was actually outraged when I first saw the 5 second wright clips. But I desided to watch
the entire Sermon on youtube, and to my surprise it wasn't at all the Anti-white people bashing the media has made it out to be. I will not join the older generation that is looking for any merit to make this uplifting candidate loose face.
This man has Been rediculed because of his name "Barack Obama", the media falsely labeled him a Muslim, and now that we know he is Christian, apparently thats not even good enough. I believe and pray he will rise from these ashes like a Phoenix. I will judge this man for his own actions and integrity, not by the words of another. If we dis-own anyone that says something we disdain, in the end we are a lonely nation that will succumb to its on misery and ashes.

In response to Stewart, how fair is that? I'm a nonpartisan voter and have had my issues with both parties (so I have no real horse in this race), but this time the DNC is right. Both candidates (who signed on) and the states KNEW the rules going in. The STATES (not the voters) decided to ignore those rules and go on with their plans in spite of the consequences. That, to me, shows disdain for the people of their states. The arrogance of it all, that they could put themselves ABOVE the rules that all the other states agreed to. By pushing for acceptance against the rules, they are slapping all the other states in the face who abided by them. Where's the fairness in that? And if the DNC gave in to these demands, it would show just how weak the party really is (and I'm sure the Republican party would just love that).
As we are all taught as children, and as I'm teaching my twins right now, when you agree to play the game by the rules, you can't go changing them because things aren't going your way. My son attempts this all the time and I have to keep reminding him that it is not fair to his sister, or anyone else he is playing with. The time to contest the rules is BEFORE the game starts, not after. This doesn't mean that this can go on indefinitely. At some point compromises have to be made to get the game started or you just don't play the game at all. If the DNC changes the rules during the game to favor ANY particular party, how can Democrats ever trust the system? That party would be so damaged that their ability to get anywhere politically would dwindle exponentially. A party divide right now is inevitable. How big a divide and what kind of damage repair can be done by November, depends on how long this carries on.

Now to the voters, who through no fault of their own, are being dragged through this: do not blame the candidates or the DNC. Blame your state governments. They are the ones who threw caution (and your rights to count) to the wind in an effort to try to be relevant in this race. They gambled with your vote and lost. It was needlessly lost. There was no incumbent candidate, so this was going to turn into one hell of a race regardless of who was running on either side. Why be in a rush to be first? With everything starting early there was plenty of time for tables to turn. These remaining 10 primaries are in second heaven now with the way this is going, with two very passionate candidates. Now I agree no one should be disenfranchised, but this puts your party into a very precarious position. The Republicans are free to concentrate on November and are sitting pretty watching you chew each other up. Do the Democratic voters want to spend the next 8 years under the Republicans, pointing fingers at each other like my 3 year olds do, saying, "This was your fault!"? If so, then maybe the Republicans deserve to win just for being adults about the whole thing.

In all fairness, a revote or a 50/50 split should have sufficed. No real agreement can be made on how to handle the issue since no side (including those in the wrong in the first place) wants to back down. And I am truly sorry that the voters of both states are made to suffer because of all this. That truly is unfair. But the damage is done and getting worse. The states will have to fix it for next time (and I mean REALLY fix it...not just pay lip service; hold your state govt.'s feet to the coals on this). All Democrats need to stand up and say, "Hey! This was a major screw up. We need to get to the bottom of this, but more importantly we need to stick together and get the White House back! Put the party bickering aside and get our side elected because the other party is going to eat our indecisiveness up for breakfast!" Democrats need to put this snafu behind them and move on. Because letting the votes stand as they are will really send a divisive message which I believe your party will not recover from for at least another decade or more. And if I'm right, I don't believe that's an outcome any Democrat wants to face.

For Stewart and others in Florida and Michigan who don't get it --- IT IS YOUR LEADERS IN THOSE STATES WHO EVEN KNOWING THE CONSEQUENCES, WILLFULLY VIOLATED THE DNC'S RULE NOT TO HAVE A EARLY PRIMARY, NOT BARACK OBAMA, NOT ANYONE ELSE EXCEPT THEM. Why aren't people storming the Capitol and writing to congresspeople, and the like? Because it's easier to blame him, than to stand up to the very ones YOU ALL elected.

What's really funny to me is the constant reference to Obama as an African-American. Have we forgotten that he is only HALF African-American? The other HALF is WHITE folks! He represents BOTH races equally. How can we ask him to choose sides? Do we expect him to really choose one half of himself over the other? How stupid is that?
Given the mentality of some of these posts, you all are asking this man to declare a race. How does he do that? How can we even expect him to?
Do we cut him in half like Soloman suggested be done to Moses? Blacks get half and whites get half? Who wins then, HRC? I shudder to think of THAT in the White House yet again.

America is on the move towards unity of purpose with Obama on the throne to make it happen, but there are forces of doom who like the statusquo so they can continue to oppress others by instilling unfounded fear. For America to profess the civilization that makes it what it is, we are on the watch the world over on which path we take. We are bound to emblace each other and respect others without recentment or stereotyping. There is no Race which is superior than the other Americans. Obama Bravo

Come on, folks! Obama may be the more honest of the 2 dems, but that's not saying much. If these 2 are our choice, we've got a problem. Obama can't admit that his preacher is a racist bigot even when presented with the evidence! Hillary has told so many lies that she has probably even forgotten what the truth actually is....and all the while, the repubs a getting all the ammo they'll need in nov. All they've got to do is bring up any or all of this garbage, and waalaa they win by a landslide. And whose fault was it? Look in the mirror. You are the folks that chose these two losers!

It is interesting reading these things that you Americans are writing here, but it is most disgusting to know that things are like this in America, a place that is regarded as GOD'S OWN COUNTRY. I am not an American but have been following your politics with a lot of interest, because of the high regard i have always had for America as the country that other countries of the world should look at and learn from; but am afraid that all that is fast fading away in me. It is true you all have to be careful about whom to choose to be your President, but the way things are going now is really shocking and disgusting to me of us who are not Americans.
It is a disgrace to find out that America can do everything in her power to save an American citizen who is taken into captivity in another country, but she is not even able to save her own citizen right there in America who has been enslaved and held in captivity for many years by hate (I mean the Pastor - Wright); it means her rescue missions are just a mere show off.
It is also embrassing to note that many Americans would pass definative sentence of condamnation on a fellow citizen just based on a subject that her or she has denounced, as is happening right now with Obama. If it remains correct that he should be punished and possibly sentenced to death as some would want it because he had known that man for such a long time, then you Americans must also sentence Hillary Clinton to the same fate for remaining with Bill who defiled the American Oath, Flag, Constitution, People, Dignity, Petriotism, and worse of all defiled America's symbol of GREATNESS -THE WHITE HOUSE. But she didnt denouce him, eventhough she denouced his crime; she acted like a true great American who saves her citizen at all cost, while rejecting totally any crime committed. Obama in the present situation is the one acting out what the True America is, with regards to this enslaved American - Rev. Wright.
Since its clear that many Americans cant save this man now, then your occupation of Iraq, in the name of saving her citizens from the grips of any eslavement, be they terrorist grip, is therefore completely illegal and criminal; you cant give what you dont have; show first that you can save many Americans who are enslaved by so many things, e.g Rev. Wright, before going out to save other people in their countries; stop the hypocrisy going on, and put your house in order first.
Also it is so suprising to know that America has grown , but very very insignificantly, away from racism of whatever form: blacks discrimanting against whites, and whites discrimanting against blacks, one religion discriminating against another, and vice versa. What a shame. How then can America feel bold to go to some other countries of the world to stop them from ethnic violence and war? America and Americans should stop trying to take the place of God in the world, because that isnt possible; take the log off your eyes first so that you can see clearly how to help other remove flickle in their eyes.
America please do the world a favour, heal yourselves first before coming out to the world, because the stench coming out of you now is so horrible, and if not managed well, then in a short while, the world will be seeing yet again the terrible fall of the might.

There is actually a "Rove" theory out there that has it as a plan to back Obama. It seems to have legs. It makes sense actually. They don't want Hillary in this race. SHE has what it takes to beat McCain & they know it, have all along. Obama is just so wrong, on so many levels. He is a danger, not the "Best" candidate.

To type the words "dumb crisis" when referring to a 20 year, or is it 15 yrs, he's changed numbers again, close relationship with a man saying "God Damn America" while bodies were still in the rubble at ground zero is terrifiing.
Try actually reading that entire article about Wright being at the Whitehouse breakfast instead of using Obama"talking points", out of context. As to Hillary's First Lady schedules not containing classifed info, well go figuire! Lest you forget...she was The First Lady. Of course she publically supported NAFTA. It was her JOB to. There are plenty of reliable people who have integrity who have confirmed she privately was against it. Damn her for doing her job while she was in the Whitehouse! I guess that happens so little, it's more than Obama can handle to tell the truth about. He demonizes & personally attacks Hillary so often he just can't be honest about truth or facts. He hasn't let that stop him so far. Why stop now?
Obama supporters are scary people in my opinion. You guys are so hypnotized by his power-crazed drive, you can't see reality. If you ever could.
No thanks, I want to elect someone who can & will care about America & ALL of her peoples. Not one race. Sadly the youngest Americans are being "raped" for their votes. He is harvesting them, new & fresh, no experiance to SEE him for what he is. With the FREE airtime he has garnered from CNN ( threatened a lawsuit didn't he??) this important fact is again being swept away. This would have ENDED any campaign for any other politician. It will take until next year for these words to ring true I fear. But mark my words, I know what I speak of.
There are numerous worthy reads on the web. Here's a couple to jolt one back to
reality.

I BELIEVE OUR COUNTRY IS AT A CROSSROADS IN HISTORY. WE KNOW AS A NATION HOW HRC DOES BUSINESS. I COMMEND AND AM EXCEEDINGLY GRATEFUL TO JOHN MCCAIN FOR HIS MILITARY SERVICE AND HIS SACRIFICE HIS SERVICE COST HIM PERSONALLY BUT I DON'T BELIEVE THAT HE CAN EFFECT THE TYPE OF CHANGE IN WASHINGTON NEEDED TO BRING OUR COUNTRY BACK FROM WHERE WE ARE HEADED. SENATOR OBAMA IS UNKNOWN TO MOST OF US BEFORE HIS RUN FOR PRESIDENT. HE IS TO BE COMMENDED FOR TRYING TO ADDRESS THE RACE ISSUE. THERE IS NO EASY ANSWER. HE HIMSELF IS CAUGHT NO MATTER WHAT HE SAYS AS WOULD ANY POLITICIAN BE. WHY DO THINK IT IS SKIRTED AROUND BY POLITICIANS ? NONE WANT TO BE PERCIEVED AS BEING RACIST. REV. WRIGHT'S COMMENTS WERE CONDEMNED BY SEN. OBAMA. I QUITE FRANKLY
AM SURPRISED BY HOW MUCH THIS HAS BEEN JUMPED ON AS A REASON FOR NOT VOTING FOR HIM. EVERY ONE HAS SKELETONS IN THEIR CLOSET. i SAY JUDGE THE MAN ON WHAT IS SEEN , NOT ON MAYBES AND RUMORS. WHEN HE STATED THAT HE HAD NOT HEARD THESE COMMENTS PERSONALLY SO HE WAS CALLED A LIAR BECAUSE HE WAS THERE. I KNOW MYSELF I HAVE SAT IN CHURCH AND COULD NOT TELL A PERSON WHAT HAD BEEN SAID ,BEING PREOCCUPIED WITH OTHER THINGS GOING ON IN MY LIFE. I SAY CUT THE MAN SOME SLACK AND MOVE ON TO MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES AND SHAME ON ANY ONE WHO USES THIS AS AN EXCUSE NOT TO SUPPORT HIS RUN FOR PRESIDENT. I PERSONALLY WANT TO SEE CHANGE IN WASHINGTON BUT EVERY ONE HAS TO REMEMBER THE PRESIDENT CANNOT EFFECT CHANGE WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF CONGRESS AND THE PEOPLE. SO I SAY GOOD LUCK TO SENATOR OBAMA. I LOOK FORWARD TO A CHANGE.

"Speaking The Truth", it appears you would not know the truth if if came up and bit you in the rearend. You need to crawl back in your hole and stop with all the racist hatred and lies, all the while trying to use scare tatics about a man's middle name. you sound like #120 above who states that he is a well educated white man. so what, so are a lot of the KKK. Get a life, you were never going to vote for Obama under any circumstances. Go Obama, President for "08".

I have been watching the news and internet reading as much news as I can on the three candidate. When it all boil down to it, it is what best for the country and our children that's fighting a unwanted war. It is sad that in order to win you got to make the next man or woman look bad. There is no such thing as a fair fight any more. Yes, races is something we all face on the day to day basic living. You can't control no one eles action but your own. So let stop all this finger pointing and lets get to the subject at hand. So all of us black and white, young and old can start bring this country back together and stop continue taring it apart. All the predidential candidate need to get back on the subject of our economy, ending this unwanted war and stop all this finger pointing. Because it is time for a change from all the low down politics. Lets get back to the matter at hand, that is find a good president

kkenya, your inclusion of the word "throne" really scares people like me. Not a good argument for your man!!!!
And to the previous commentator who would have us believe that you're not an American..."Heal thyself" before giving advise. In case your didn't acutally hear the biggoted reverend words, they were horrendously racist...so again, who needs the "healing"? In addition, when asked what his reaction would have been if the candidate had been white and the preacher a white supremicist, Obama even went so far as to say that the two weren't the same. How? Didn't he HEAR wright's "White America" comment? Check the preacher's background; he's still a Marxist for all of his or Obama's flag waving!

So let me get this straight. Hillary, McCain, Hannity, Limbaugh, Obama, Rev. Wright, The Media and everyone in America is perfect . Never lied or told half truths. Never even thought a racial slur or bigot remark. If thats the case then we are truly a blessed nation. Sorry but to me that sounds ignorant, hypocritical and just plain full of it! Anyone in the public eye will be scrutinized for any negative remark about this country yet isn't that what freedom of speech is about. Oh wait I forgot only if it doesn't offend anyone. Every person has done or said things that from others perspectives have come across negatively. All the candidates have great qualities and I'm sure are just as complex and imperfect as you and I. What we must do is know as MUCH about each candidates views regarding everything so that we can make an well informed decision and make this country better and as close to perfect as possible.

Here's a different take on one of the main issues of this campaign. I believe that if I make a mess, I'm responsible for cleaning it up; if I break something belonging to someone else, I'm responsible for repairing it or replacing it regardless of cost. An honest philosophy, but does it apply to this country as well? We started the Iraqi war based on erroneous intelligence which destabilized that country. Have we a moral responsibility to restabilize the country before we leave?

Regarding Michelle Obama's feeling "proud" ...

I'm a "white male"[age 56] from Iowa... when I heard that Barak Obama won the Iowa caucuses, I ALSO heard myself saying I'm proud of Iowa for being able to vote their heart, and not the color of the skin of the candidate...

My pride has floundered though sputnik, Viet Nam War, Nixon, ... and had finally decided to abdicate due to 7+ years of Bushisms....

For the FIRST timein my voting life, I feel like there is a candidate in whom I can find pride in supporting...

I read and reread the words of Barak Obama's speech on racism... the best words I have ever heard on how WE, as a nation, might finally get beyond the divisiveness of racism in America...

I heard the words of Pastor Wright... and find nothing offensive. If the "whites" of this nation would take the time to understand WHY such words could come from a Christian pastor... we could maybe find the understanding for the words Christ used...

Come on, Johnd!!! If that perverse venom had come from the preachings of a white preacher about the failures of the black community in the last 40 years, you'd probably "find" it offensive...and you also need to realistically admit that it "takes two" to patch up differences...not just one bending over backwards...and this is where your obama failed...he didn't "call" his preacher and congregation for their failings in doing  their part or taking any responsibility....and it WILL come back to haunt him!In the same vein, if McCain used the phrase "typical black person" he'd be run out of Washington on a rail...and yet everyone is willing to give Obama a "pass"? Come on, that's as absurd as Obama's objection to the paralleling of his pastor's remarks to those of a (fictional) white supremecist !!!

I agree #163, but I did read the articles that #158 posted. I had read the one on Karl Rove months ago and have been watching him very closely on Fox.

I'm beginning to see all this played out. I think we need to find a solution to bring these two candidates together for the sake of the party. I'm not trying to be biased, but I think that Hilliary really does have more experience and a better command of both foreign and domestic issues. She would completely pummel McCain in the debates, especially since he was having problems remembering things over in Iraq. A deal can be reached to bring Obama on board, but with all this about "typical white people" and the rantings of Wright, (the polls will show he is slipping) you don't want mass defection from either supporters. Below are the websites from Sophia above.

Just a quick note to those who think they know what's going on in Florida and why the Florida votes shouldn't count. The REPUBLICAN legislature scheduled the primaries for the two parties. I as a Democrat obviously never voted for any of the Republicans who made this decision. I went into the voting booth along with 1.7 million other Floridia Democrats to do what you do in a democracy--VOTE. No one campaigned here, but all were on the ballot and all of them received votes. Not one took their name off the ballot here. I had no problem with the DNC withholding the Florida result at the time (so as not to step on the unusually large influence that Iowa, New Hampshire, and now South Carolina have in the election process).

However, now that many weeks have gone by and Florida's vote obviously has not been a factor in the delegate or popular vote count, and every other state is getting to have its say, the DNC must find a way to let Florida voters vote. The easiest solution is to take the result of the primary that was already held where every candidate was on the ballot and all were disadvantaged equally. Or there should be some sort of re-vote (which is silly since we already voted and which would cost too much and which would yield the same result according to polls and which couldn't be conducted in a timely manner at this point and on and on).

At any rate, there are only three other states in this country that have more people living in them than Florida. Florida is critically important in the fall. I can't believe that the DNC would be so absurdly stupid as to refuse to find a way to include these important voters. Spare me the ranting about "rules were broken." The voters didn't break any "rules." If Obama or Clinton would have wrapped this thing up by now, then obviously Florida would not have been a factor and I am sure that the DNC would seat the delegates and count the votes of Florida as they now stand. So, all the talk about rule-breaking is disingenuous.

Whether it's Obama or Clinton or someone else, writing Florida off before the general election even begins is a SERIOUS mistake. Democrats down here will not forget or forgive that. Many won't turn out, and some, like myself, will vote Republican for the first time. Remember, the voters did NOTHING wrong. The party is heading off an electoral cliff if they decide to punish the voters (real people and real Democrats) in Michigan and Florida. If the voter's votes don't count, then what's the point of having a democracy?

Obama dedicated his book…20 years of his church going life…and about 2,000$ a week to a hate spewing bigot….he calls “like a uncle to me”….

And I am supposed to be worried about Clintons judgement?

If it takes him 20 years to figure out his pastor is a bigot …how can we trust his judgement on anything.

The media will let this die down and let him throw everything but the kitchen sink at us ( form letters from prayer breakfasts, passport breeches from January..puhleasse!) to make us forget he is a complete phony.

Blah Blah …Hope.. (hate)… Blah Blah… Change.. (same old thing)… Blah Blah … Hope and Change..( just another politician)… Blah!

This guy has no chance against McCain now and he and his wife have helped solidify the mistaken belief that liberals "hate" America.. Thanks Obamabots!!!

For the person who said Obama doesn't care about the Florida and Michigan having a re-vote.
He agreed to a re-vote. I don't think Hillary's backers paying for the re-vote is fair at all........It was the states decision not to have it not Obama's....
Personally, I don't think Florida should ever be allowed to vote after the disaster in the last election..The whole country has suffered for that one....
Besides she was the one who didn't care until she got behind.......

As an unbiased European, I must admit it gets a little confusing - I thought we were told Obama was muslim but now he has a pastor?? I thought Obama is half-white so how could we now think he hates white people?? Does he hate his mother and grandmother who raised him, but still talks very fondly about them?? I never thought Obama was perfect (none of us is), and I don't think he has ever claimed to be. Actually, Bill Clinton had several moral issues but turned out to be one of the best presidents America had. It would be interesting to find out about some of you who have been condeming Obama based on his pastor's speech. The idea is to vote for the best of the candidates - if you think it's Obama, leave the pastor alone and let Obama do the great work you expect him to do OR he that is without sin should cast the first stone.

It makes me sick, sick, sick.

Anyone who doesn't recognize that it was the Clinton campaign who actively practiced negative campaign tactics to break an otherwise unstoppable momentum behind the Obama campaign needs to go back and look at the paper trail:

Dealings with Rezko, Obama as racist, the Canadian meeting minutes, Obama in Somali attire, Obama as a supporter of NAFTA, Obama the Muslim, Obama as the protege of Mr Wright, Obama as the anti-Democrat, and now Obama as the negative campaigner.

God, her politics makes me SICK.

Make no mistake: LOW-BALL CAMPAIGNS COME FROM LOW-BALL CANDIDATES.

To Jean-Pierre KAOMA.... You comment takes the cake... The record shows that she [Clinton] was in the same building. The White house.

What does this have to do with Hillary's candidacy. Bill cheated on Hillary, not the other way around.

Anyway, I agree about the doubt in Obama's judgment and character. I can't in good conscience for Obama. I might even vote for McCain if Obama become the Dem nominee.

1 - So incredibly ironic that those states that thought the most important thing in the world was to have an early primary. Now they are sorry.

2 - The truth about Wright's comments is coming out slowly --- every time somebody goes on YouTube and sees more of his sermon than the soundbites allowed they find out that they've been had by the media.

3 - The media is built to swiftboat. Candidates have to fight back or they just get swamped by the kind of crud the Clintons specialize in. Contrary to spin, Obama supporters do not confuse him with Jesus --- they don't even WANT him to "turn the other cheek." It's just a good way to get crucified.

4 - So, all the Clinton campaign can say about Hillary's lies on NAFTA is that Obama is "changing the subject"? Isn't that as good as admitting they are full of it on the NAFTA claims?

What fascinates me the most about all these posts is that you really get a sense of what type of person is backing either Clinton or Obama. You'll notice that most of the people who post in support of Hillary can barely string together a logical and correctly spelled comment. While people who post comments in support of Obama have well thought out posts. It's pretty sad really if you think about it. But thats her demographic I guess; the uneducated and ignorant. I love the polls they release that show how Hillary does so well with 'lower Income' voters. I wish they would come out and say "Hillary: supported by Idiots everywhere." Thats my 2 cents anyway. All of you who say that Obama can't be trusted because of what his preacher said are proving how embedded racism is in America and how correct Obama was with his comments. It's time to honestly look in the mirror and say "Hi my name is (your name here)...and I'm a racist." Maybe then you can start to change for the better.

For those of you in Florida and Michigan, who say you will vote Republican or not vote because your primary vote didn't count, you need to read all the news to see who is really at fault. In Florida, your republican governor knew he would cause democratic strife by moving up the primary and breaking the rules and by then voting for a republican, you will fulfill his objective and once again be duped by your republican leadership. In neither case, were the candidates or the national party responsible. It is the responsibility of the states to follow the rules of the election.

Instead of acting like children who heard a provocative rumor, you should try being responsible adults and become truly informed about an issues before commenting on it. This election shouldn't be about partisan politics. Our country is in a severe crisis and we all need to be focused on the real issues like the war and the economy and what can be done to help the American people and who is mostly likely to do those things.

God Bless America and all who are strong enough to speak up against injustice, intolerance and greed!

Is it really true that everyone who blogs thinks there is a conspiracy by one candidate or the other? Is everything a conspiracy? Is every word the candidates speak a lie? Are there no honest words from any of them? Why can't anyone admit or accept that there is at the very least a shred of sincerity from all candidates? If anything is wrong with America, it's that we, the ones who vote, have to pick the best liar, not the best man or woman for the job. At some point before the world ends, and the way things are going, that may be soon, we'll have to make decisions on our own gut instinct rather than who is the best liar. Please vote your conscience and not what you read or hear from the media. The media is a powerful influence but who can you believe anymore? What you hear is nothing but opinion. For instance, Obamas race speech. By most, one of the best speeches in history. But the media and bloggers sensed something sinister. It was and act ! Get a life you pricks. You can trust no one. Therefore, just close your eyes at the voting booth and point your finger. It makes no difference who is elected. Your screwed with whoever it is.

My question is why has no one questioned Hillary's relationship with Peter Paul during the 2000 Senate Election, and ongoing California Lawsuit involving the same matter. Not to mention her relationship with Norman Hsu. She states that she has the experience for "day one". That experience is just another politician that will say and do anything to get elected, she doesn't care about this country, just about her legacy.

She will destroy any chance the Democtratic Party has of recapturing the White House.

It also amazes me that the Clintons and the media cannot attack Obama's character so they must try to find anyone around Obama that they CAN attack.

Fellow Democrats we need to face the facts, Hillary has destroyed this whole process and has made Obama unelectable even if he is nominated. At the same time she has ensured that Obama supporters will be so dis-enfrachised that she will not recieve their support.

I was sure that the Democrats would have to nominate a deceased candidate to lose the General Election, unfortunately Hillary has ensured that either nomination will be terminal by July.

Clinton needs to explain why she sought from Bush assurance, as she claims, that the war authorization resolution would not be used to authorize a war, but, when she received his asurances, privately, she did not move to have that sneaky little man's assurances written into the authorization he sought. Why did she deliberately chose to let him have that option without further consultation with Congress. Trustworthy?

Did you hear him say Friday he was never in the pews for Wright's tirafes to now say in his speech Tuesday he was present?

Obama is a liar, opportunist and race-baiter. We do not need the internal core of our new president filled to the rim with hatemongering words like Wright's,

As an African American female, Christian, Black church member, attender and

Can we just stop it with the demagogue preachers already? Preachers, pastors, and religious speakers are basically also politicians and some of the few who think, speak out and take sides. If not them, then who?

Some parallel examples - ( in case you want to disenfranchise all of their listeners, too )

Pastor John Hagee, whose endorsement John McCain was "honored" and "proud" to receive says Katrina was God's punishment for homosexuality, Jews are to blame for anti-Semitism, and Catholicism is the "Whore of Babylon" and "a cult."

Evangelical pioneer Francis Schaeffer "called for the violent overthrow of the US government " because of abortion -

"A true Christian in Hitler's Germany and in the occupied countries should have defied the false and counterfeit state. This brings us to a current issue that is crucial for the future of the church in the United States, the issue of abortion... It is time we consciously realize that when any office commands what is contrary to God's law it abrogates it's authority. And our loyalty to the God who gave this law then requires that we make the appropriate response in that situation..."

This sorta sounds like the Declaration of Independence, yes?

...that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it...

Jerry Falwell said ( among other things) : "That our gays, lesbians, abortionist the ACLU etc. were to blame for 9/11". and he said "God had removed his blessing from America on 9/11, because America accepted gays".

"This stranglehold has got to be broken or the country's going down the drain," said Billy Graham, agreeing with Nixon's comments about Jews and their influence in American life.

Pat Robertson said : "Just like what the German Nazis did to the Jews, so liberal Democrats are doing to evangelical Christians."

It's OK to criticize the government, kids - in fact, you have to.

Bottom line : those that would not have voted for Obama, for whatever reasons will not vote for him, no matter what... and vice versa..and that is fine, SO CAN WE NOW GET BACK TO THE REAL ISSUES?
Truth is bitter, especially when one is confronted with it...black or white. it is a human thing. Do we need change in this country regarding race relations? Is the staus quo acceptable especially to those who in spite of what they saw and heard directly from "the horse's mouth'" still believe obama is your regular politician trying to save his neck?...or someone ...just maybe a little different from the run of the mill..
THINK Americans...we have an opportunity to really do something to save our society. We have a chance this year to put someone on the seat who has the best chance of seeing our society in a larger perspective and thereby make some seriously needed changes to how we see and treat each other. LET US STOP PLAYING THE OSTRICH GAME.....STICKING OUR HEADS IN THE SAND AND HOPING THE PROBLEM WILL JUST GO AWAYA INSTEAD OF CONFRONTING AND DEALING WITH IT. Those of you who are married knows that problems in marriage do not disappear until the parties do someting about iy.Trust me, it is not the Limbaugh,Hannity,or their likes who are interested in saving this country. Those ones are just after their own pockets.....like Limbaugh always boast about his "profit" center....popularized by sponsors who in turn are after their pockets and will sell the whole society just so they make their profits.

Candidate for US president acknowledges that he can't distance himself from the person who damned this country, called it the evil which earned the 9/11, etc.
Obama continues to attend the church, makes donations, and never publicly tried to denounce his pastor hateful, racist speeches, before the information appeared in media.
So, what "change" and" hope" does he attempt to bring us? He speaks well, using race and phrases about the bad old rule.
America can repeat the fate of Germany, when the other relatively good orator (Hitler), who used the crisis in his purposes, also used racial card, and became the ruler. He nearly destroyed the world.

His name was Hitler

I'm a Texas Democrat, and have already voted for Senator Obama. All the baloney about his pastor just shows how deeply rooted and persistent racial bias is in our lives. I'm not sure I agree with him about 9/11 being our fault, although many people have cited Osama bin Laden's fury at U.S. military being statiioned in his native Saudi Arabia as the cause. Other than that, he pretty well recited the true history of white/black relations in this country.

Such a to-do about the Reverend Wright leads me to wonder why we don't hear more about Senator McCain's relationship with the Reverend John Hagee. Now there is something for America to be worried about. Reverend Hagee is the organizer and head of Christians United for Israel, an ultra rightwing Fundamentalist organization that is intensely eager for the U.S. to bomb Iran. Not just John McCain, but Joe Liebermann and a host of other mostly Republican members of Congress are also involved with CUFI. I recommend you google "Christians United for Israel" and see what Bill Moyers, Democracy Now, and others have to say about the organization, and watch the video from their convention in D.C, which starts out with a letter of welcome from President George W. Bush. You will love Senator Liebermann's endorsement of Reverend Hagee.

Wow. Such blatantly irresponsible misrepresentation of someone's purpose as in Ann's comment #208 is totally wrong and speaks to the ugly racial underbelly of America.

As someone of half Jewish heritage who lost 95% of his European relatives to the concentration camps run by Hitler's Nazi's, I find it profoundly disturbing that you would equate Obama, who has expressed nothing but a desire to help Americans through positive change, with someone who spouted hatred from day one. You cannot show us even one statement of Obama's that contains the hateful messages that you are attributing to him. I feel sorry for those of you who find it necessary to spew hatred and mistrust towards someone who has done nothing, but try to bring Americans together. As far as the words his Pastor said, only narrow minded fools would interpret honest social dialog for some great anti-American threat. To educate you, I would like to point out that Hitler was a fascist and the people in this country who fall under the definition of fascism are those in the current administration who have used fear mongering, racism and lies upon lies to get 53 million American sheep to fall inline at the voting booth.

"Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology (generally tied to a mass movement) that considers the individual subordinate to the interests of the state, party or society as a whole. Fascists seek to forge a type of national unity, usually based on (but not limited to) ethnic, cultural, racial, and/or religious attributes." Wiki definition

America is supposed to have a government "for the people, by the people". Those who would wage war for oil and say America is a Christian country where minorities and women should be second class citizens are no different than the Nazi's. Obama is a man of integrity who wants to help all Americans, even those of you who are too blind to see it. If you want a better America, I suggest that you stop spreading the fear mongering racism so constantly promoted by the propaganda channel (Fox) and the liars who currently occupy the white house, and instead, try going to Google for news from all over the United States and world so that you might actually find some truth amongst the lies.

Obama is a good man who wants to restore the American Dream to all of us. If you don't see how republican trickle down economics has been destroying the middle class and access to the American Dream for most Americans, then you must have been in a comma for the last 25 years. McCain wants to continue those policies. He is the one you should fear most, not a man who dares to believe in the American Dream and seeks it for all of us!

God Bless America and all those who are strong enough to speak up against injustice, intolerance and greed!

can I ask bloggers to do some research on Karl Rove. I think that (aside from the Wright comments), there is something very bad brewing in the air. There is too much hating coming out within the democratic party that will lead to McCain and company getting in the WH.
Google him and please, read this article that someone posted earlier. It is very interesting.

How dare Obama speak of inconsistency. First he said that Rezko's wife buying the land the same day as him was a coincidence, then he said, he couldn't remember who called who but he just wanted Rezko's opinion on the land. Later he said "it was boneheaded of him to buy land with Rezko". He said Rezko donated less than $100,000 to his campaign and then he donated all of it, now that Rezko is on trial in Chicago and the $$$ donations will be coming up soon, Obama suddenly remembered about another $150,000 that Rezko gave him. With Rev Wright first he said he was never at the church during those (militant) sermons, then he said he heard only one prior to running for presidency, then he gave a speech 3 days ago were he admits to hearing some speeches. You remember that brilliant, life altering speech , were he portrays his grandmother as not only scared of blacks but highly insensitive to be making racial comments to her half black grandchild. Obama is a power hungry politician and worst he is one that believes he is too important or above reproach, how dare you ask him who he is and what he is about. Be careful if you ever dare to truly ask, he will remind you over and over what color his skin is while accusing someone else of bringing it up. He can give all the lets get beyond race speeches he wants, but he doesn't want you to get beyond the fact that he is black. The moment that happens he becomes just another candidate that can be poked, pressed and criticized by everyone. As long as Obama remains black, people will always pause or hesitate before they pounce, that is until November and the 527 republican backed groups get a hold of him. He will never win.

Media is in bed with Obama. Look at the headline. Obama goes on the offensive. If Clinton had been the one telling people that Obama was misleading people or being dishonest, this article would have been Clinton negative attacks on Obama or Clinton goes negative.

Obama should be the last person to claim that Hillary Clinton has a history of misleading voters. What has he been doing the the last year? He has mislead millions of voters who believe he is not the regular politician but someone who can bring change. He should look himself in the mirror because he has lied about being in the church when Wright was condemning America and never tried to help change Wright's attitude. Everytime a white person mention his color, his campaign paint them as racist. All along from New Hampshire, South Carolina, Mississippi, Obama has been stoking the flames of racism. It is obvious the white people overly cautious about what they say, because blacks are quick to play the race card, all the time. Obama was quick to have NBC fire Don Imus for calling the players "nappy headed hoes." Imus learned it from the black rappers, some of whom are endorsing Obama. Imus apologized, but he lost his job. Yet, for all the nasty things Reverend Wright said about white people, I don't see Obama leaving his church in protest. Al Sharpton is "quietly supporting Obama" yet he is more devisive than Jesse Jackson. Of course Obama needs Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to prove that he is really half black. If he gets into the white house, he won't even think about them. Why? He is now so beholden to so many white elitists that he won't even have time for all the black folks who voted for him 92%.
Right now black folks are not considering what Obama will do for them because they are voting for him simply because he has the chance to be the first African American President. Never mind that Obama hardly talk about the issues that blacks are facing in America like AIDS, Poverty, Education, Health Disparities, Joblessness, homelessness, Drugs, Most of the men incarcerated etc. etc.

The recent attempt to slander Obama by association with Rev. Wright stinks of hypocrisy.

While there are phony cries of outrage about Wright’s remarks across the press for days, there has been hardly a peep about Pastor John Hagee’s endorsement of McCain. McCain didn’t reject and denounce Hagee, but rather said he was honored and proud to have Hagee’s support.

Sorry, but this was the man who claimed Katrina was God’s punishment for homosexuality in America. This was the man who called Catholicism a “cult” and the “whore of Babylon”.

And Hagee isn’t the only one. McCain has called televangelist Rick Parsley his “spiritual guide” and gladly accepted his endorsement. Yet, this man called Islam a “false religion” and that its America’s duty to destroy it. I don’t want anyone who calls such a fanatical, anti-American hatemonger his “spiritual guide” anywhere near the button.

Yet, again, the press ho-hums and goes back to talking about Rev. Wright…Incredible.

Obama wants us all to "come up higher", but after 20+ years, he can't seem to get his own pastor to do the same...
Obama wants to take care of the poverty-striken and the disenfranchised, but he couldn't seem to convince his slum lord pal, Tony Rezko, to even provide heat in some of his apartments. (Rezko didn't have the money, but he did have $150,000...er, I mean $250,000 to donate to Obama's campaign at about the same time).
Are so many Americans really so guillable? Quit drinking that kool-aid. It might taste good going down, but as Jim Jones' folks could tell you, it just might be pure poison...

Ann,
Are you seriously comparing Obama to Hitler. I don't know if you ever studied falicies in philosophy, but wow that will be the next one from the Hillary Camp.

You have no idea the ignorance that you spew when you make a statement like that. I think it scares you that he is an inspirational leader. When did charisma become a prefix to ethnic cleansing and genocide. I could understand if someone said something like this without thinking, but you composed, I would assume read, and then posted this mental diarrhea.

In summation, quite possible the dumbest thing I have read on here.
