Obama race speech garners good reviews

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 21, 2008 05:59 PM

Barack Obama's speech this week on race relations has received glowing praise from the pundocracy. Average Americans quite liked it, too, according to a new poll released this afternoon.

The CBS News poll found that 69 percent of voters who heard or read about the speech Tuesday say Obama did a good job addressing the issue of race, and 71 percent say he did well explaining his relationship with his spiritual mentor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., whose inflammatory sermons on the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the US government, and other topics caused a huge controversy.

But the survey had a warning sign for Obama -- the percentage of voters who said Obama would unite the country dropped from 67 percent last month to 52 percent. Most voters, however, said the controversy would make no difference in their vote.

For the poll, CBS said it reinterviewed on Thursday voters who were first surveyed between March 15 and 18, in the midst of the Wright controversy and before Obama's speech. The survey results have a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

  1. Obama Is A Liar from an African American Female Registered Democrat

Amazing pack of lies from Obama's mouth on Tuesday (as usual).

I am not surprised since he could not plagarize this speech.

Did you hear him say Friday he was never in the pews for Wright's tirafes to now say in his speech Tuesday he was present?

Obama is a liar, opportunist and race-baiter. We do not need the internal core of our new president filled to the rim with hatemongering words like Wright's,

As an African American female, Christian, Black church member, attender and tither and pastor's granddaughter, daughter, niece and cousin, Wright does not reflect the Black church theology.

He is a demagogue like Hitler and Obama is his disciple. Remember, millions joined the SS movement in Germany following Hitler's fiery speeches and we now know the outcome.

WAKE UP AMERICA and African Americans stop lying for this guy!

  1. I really have trouble with the continual drumbeat of denunciation of Rev. Wright's remarks as inflamatory.

Reverend Wright is a good person trying to explain a very frustrating and provocative situation: the continuing racial chasm in America.

Reverend Wright told his congregants to be virtuous, to work hard, to be self-reliant. He also told them that he believed the system was stacked against them.

Believing that the system is rigged is not unique to the black community nor to Reverend Wright.

Barak Obama knows what Reverend Wright said and is still reaching out across the lines of race and class to improve on what is right in this country.

It is time for us all to join Senator Obama and to make the effort to hear each other, to respond with good will and to do our best to make this truly "one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

  1. Obama is, no doubt, a very talented speaker. If I were a democrat I'd vote for him, if he wins, hooray! No way for Clinton would I vote. Women are equal to men, according to God's Word; however, they usually aren't of the temperatment made for leading nations. They are for leadership in a home. They are precious, and civilization is dependent on them, But they are, according to God's Word to be subordinate to their spouses' instructions; that is, unless the man of the house relinquishes to them responsibilities that he's rather not do. I plan to vote for, guess who? That's right: Sen. McCain. But if the dems get the nod; I would hope Barack wins!

  1. You gonna have to have a heart of stone not to be impressed by that speech. I watched that speech again and again on You tube, even though the picture quality wasn't so good. He looked and sounded majestic. He didn't have to invent any drama to be effective unlike Hillary. His understated eloquence was simply the height of sophistication.

  1. Charles Krauthammer was absolutely correct. The speech held many instances of fraud. It is a sorry state of affairs when political pundits are unwilling to make any effort to analyze Obama's speech in real terms. Give him a pass because he calls us typical white people? His ideas on race unity is that us "typical white people" should let black racists and bigots exercise their free speech. Typical racist remarks. Typical bigots.

  1. Here is a fact. An elderly white colleague of mine, who voted for McCain in primary here in Texas said he is thinking about voting for Obama in general election. His reason? He watched the speech Obama gave on race issues. He said that he felt that Obama was speaking the truth, and that Obama is trustworthy. Believe me when I say this, myself and another young colleague of mine tried very hard to convince this older colleage to vote for Obama in the primary. He refused to say he voted for in the primary. After watching Obama take on the race issues, he said he probably will cast his vote for Obama in November general election.

  1. You realy need to be a stauch hater and definitely not a Democrat for you not to see yourself through Obama's speech. We need to be honest and I trully believe now that Obama is the one to unify the country and probably even to clear our hearts at least for 20% over and above where Bush will leace us. This is not to mention how much our realy alies are waiting for this big change in US leadership.

  1. For KH -- Oh my goodness, honeycakes, what is your problem? I haven't heard one black minister denounce the Rev. Wright; maybe they have looked into the context of those 30-second soundbites and are familiar with the totality of the Reverend's Christian teachings of prayer and service. Even the Conservative white Baptist preacher (and former presidential candidate) Mike Huckabee, though he (like Obama) condemned the inflammatory words, he did not condemn the Reverend Wright . . . or cast stones at Obama.

  1. KH said "He is a demagogue like Hitler and Obama is his disciple. "

I am continually amazed by the absurdity of some statements made about Obama and many on the left. To say that a speech about acceptance and uniting all people would put you on par with the hate filled speeches of Hitler is quite literally crazy. To say that this country is somehow perfect and does not deserve some criticism, not to mention harsh criticism, for its continued racism, conduct around the world, and many other issues shows how out of touch some of these people really are. Face it America, we have problems, and the first thing you should do to solve a problem is to admit it. Obama, like all of us, is not perfect, but by no stretch of the imagination is he Hitler.

We need to stop listening to the true spreaders of hate.

  1. You misremember the question Obama was asked. When he said he wasn't there, he was referring to a specific speech that was Wright's last speech. But nobody bothers to quote the question, only the response.

And he has told Wright that he was wrong--in his book, he talks about arguing with him, for crying out loud! Believe it or not, the news doesn't have every fact. This issue was there from the start, way back when Obama rejected Wright as a speaker at his campaign's start. Obama disagrees with Wright, he always has, and he can't exactly hate whites when he's half white, now can he?

I say this as a white Republican who voted for Bush AND McCain more than once. John McCain is a decent human being. Do you see him giving Obama hell for this? Do you see Hillary giving Obama hell for this? Then why should we give him hell for words he never spoke?

Dear Anne, before you comment please lookup the word racist. The definition is:

    racism |ˈrāˌsizəm|
    noun
the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

Since there is no qualification on the race of the person harbaring those beliefs then anyone can be a racist. Since Mr. Obama identifies with the black side of his family, as evidenced by his chuch affiliation, then he certainly can be a racist against other groups. Regardless of the number of times this man invokes his "white grandmother", his pretentiousness, contradictions, lies, bigotry and hatred will be evident to all who are willing to see. (Note: see movie Bob Roberts)

    Here is a fact:
I have experienced descrimination first hand and have always been a registered Democrat. Yet I could no more vote for Mr. Obama than I could for a follower of Adolf Hitler. If this man my party's nominee then I will vote Republican for the first time.

  1. I was in the grocery line today, a couple of places behind a woman wearing an Obama badge. "So you're for racism!" the guy behind her said, loudly. OK, loudmouths are everywhere. But the checker, whom I know as a usually mild-mannered and polite person, quickly jumped into the fray. "He's NOT a racist she cried. "Yes he is ." "No he isn't ." People are getting way too emotional about this, and it's going to destroy the Democrat party's chances in November. Racist or not, Obama is not electable. The vast unwashed do not accept him, and never will. If the left wing of the Democratic party insists on running him, we'll have 4 years of McCain and 4 more years of war. Won't Halliburton and the oil people be happy?

  1. I agree...Barack Obama is in no way racist and the media (especially the right wing media) is salivating on this story and blowing it WAY out of proportion. The people with the strongest views are people who have not heard the entire sermon from the Pastor or watched Obama's entire speech-mark my words. They are people who have been against Obama already for other reasons and are using this to try and take him down...it won't work because the truth has a way of coming out, and it's still a month till the next primary..

  1. chapter 14 page 293 OBAMA talks about setting in church and listening to Write give a sermon where Hiroshima etc was mentioned "hm sounds familiar" and also talks about how he agreed with the church creed page 284, I think he is still not being honest. I have the book and read it myself. Dreams from my father

Real quick the day before this all came out my mother and I logged onto the churches website and found these.. today if you log on there good luck finding them because they have been removed... Now I am sorry but these are the churches values, the churches views the whole time, and he belonged to it the entire time... OBAMA I DON'T BELIEVE YOU!!!

    http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0803/1

OBAMA: And, as I said, Anderson, if I had heard any of those statements, I probably would have walked up, and I probably would have told Reverend Wright that they were wrong.

But they were not statements that I heard when I was in church.

COOPER: So, no one in the church ever said to you, man, last week, you missed this sermon; Reverend Wright said this; or...

    OBAMA: No.

COOPER: I mean, I think I read in your books that you listened to tapes of Reverend Wright when you were at Harvard Law School.

    OBAMA: I did.

COOPER: So, you had no idea?

    OBAMA: I understand.

I did not. Well, I want to be clear that, when I ran for president, some of these statements started surfacing.

COOPER: I mean, you may not have been there, but have you -- you must have heard that he had said these things.

OBAMA: You know, I confess that I did not hear about this until -- until I started running for president.

And then there was a story that was issued in which I strongly objected to these statements and condemned them. But what I also understood that was -- was Reverend Wright was on the verge of retirement and that a new pastor was coming in. The church family was one that was very important to me. It's where my wife and I got married. It's where our children were baptized. And, so, my belief was that this was something out of the ordinary. Obviously, some of these statements indicate that this was happening more frequently.

But I also want to say this, Anderson. This is somebody who was a former U.S. Marine, who is a biblical scholar, who's preached and taught at theological seminaries all across the country, and has had a reputation as a preeminent preacher in the country.

And, so, I have to strongly condemn the statements that were made. They do not reflect my views or Michelle's views, or probably the views of many people in the church.

On the other hand, you know, Reverend Wright is somebody who is like an uncle or a family member who you may strongly object to what they have to say, but, as he's about to retire, I have no intention of leaving the church itself.

  1. As a white middle-aged male I've been able to take advantage of many of the opportunities that come to me becacuse I am white and male. When I heard Sen. Obama speak on Tuesday I was both proud and fearful. Proud that I was alive when someone who wanted to be an American leader came out in a speech and challeged we white people to be honest and look at our racism. I wasn't made to feel guilty about it because it was recognized that my racism is something I was taught. But like all bad habits it's not something I need to keep living out. I can change. After hearing the speech I told my wife that more than ever I place my trust in young Americans who are tired of the divison and inequality cased by racism, and are not afraid to be public and talk about it. I hope we don't turn away in fear, but take this one in a lifetime opportunity to engage each other in civil dialogue over the racism that still exists in America.

Has anyone even bothered to look for the videos in question and have an thoughtful analysis or it's just easier to be someone's mouthpiece and not think twice about what you say. The was some of the most notable media personalities have been dealing with the issue sometimes seems to me like a waste of a good education.

  1. Hello everyone,

First I am an American who happens to be Black. I do not live in a bubble...and I would say most Black Americans in this does not either.

I am a Repulican and consider my self a moderate conservative, but I am feeling my party is loosing touch in certain areas in our society.....I believe our mission is complete in Irac and it is time to return home and rebuild our economy,
and continue to put the pressure on Osama, that mission, I agree with. On to more pressing issues.....our boarders and policies need not to be revamped, but we need to implement and follow through with the laws that are in place.

We are faced with huge challenges ahead and we need a leader who can impower hope and vision back into American society.

I feel John McCain is out of touch with the average American as well as Hillary...I feel Barack has a lot to learn and he is currently learning some hard lessons.

Afilliations can be very damaging and carry huge consequences.....I do not belive that the average Black person who works as a Doctor or janitor or bus driver or soldier, business owner or stay at home mom, believes the nonsence from the Black Panthers or Mr. Wright.....

I am insulted on a personal level when I hear the clearly devisive and hate mongering coming from throw-backs that still live in times gone by.

If you are a business owner or work for one of the many firms across this great
country, you know as well as I ,this nonsence of race bating is bad for business and I personally believe the people behind the hate are jealous of the people that have successfully assimilated into society.and want to see chaos.

I believe people like Mr.Wright and groups like the Black Panthers, KKK and the American Muslem groups hate this great country and want to see it divided...they do not want to heal, they want to hurt.

I truley believe that impowerment begins when a person stops being a victim and becomes a victor. The past is the past, now is the time to truly declare your freedom and begin to live in a world that is limitless and is only bound by our fears.

I believe Barack has a very good chance to be President if he can show proof of his resolve to distance him self from the extremist in this country and deal with and work with the people in this great nation that is made up of many races.

I feel Sen. McCain and Sen. Clinton is business as usual......they are the good old boys and represent the old guard, and we don't need business as usual, we need change to survive......this war has to go away, and our boys and girls need to come home,,ASAP !!!!!!.

This is bigger than Black and White and race baiting and playing victim, it truley is time to grow up America and see it for what it really is, the survival of our nation.

There are some issues that I don't agree with Barack on such as his stance on illegal immigration, but as a nation we can work with him and I believe he wants to work with us. And why do I believe this........it's because he actually has hope and faith in America and you can see it in his eyes and manner.

  1. Great speech but it missed the point. It seems clear Obama's spiritual advisor and his wife seem to hate America. Race is not the question.

  1. Reading some of your comments just proves that racism is alive and well. Whether you're voting for Clinton or Obama it doesn't matter. What matters is what you believe in and what kind of world you want you and your children to live in. Do you want to be afraid to travel abroad because people dislike racist, annoying Americans? I sure don't want to deal with that. I'd like for us all to come together to work on solving issues like war, health care and global warming. These are things that affect everyone. So no matter who you vote for... just try to be a better person. We all benefit from it.

  1. Having watched and objectively listened to the clip on Wright's sermon in it's entirety, I have to say that I understand why FOX news has often been criticized.

I understand the need put your dislike across but not with bare butts. FOX News is expected to represent the greater good of society. To misinform and distort the truth to serve it's own interests is not only sub-journalistic, it ultimately does more harm that good. FOX news can be sure that it has placed your credibility on the line. By editing Wright's sermon to portray racism, I conclude that it's FOX news hat has proved racist in this case.

Yes! in Politics (people, newspapers etc.) often differ in opinions. This is natural human trait.

BUT to manipulate and give out false news and info is very distressing especially when it concerns the Religion.

By the way -- I am a non-christian but it does bother me when Christians bash other Christians with false accusations. May God bless you and open up your heart. If you have to say something -- do it but not with a prejudiced mind.

  1. One hundred years from now, when the petty mudslinging has been long forgotten, Barack Obama's speech may stand with Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural address as among the greatest political speeches in the history of the American union, and perhaps the entire world. Before the recent sniping, I had merely perceived him to be intelligent and political skillful. Now, although I would use the term "great" with extreme caution, he impresses me as a true candidate for that designation - more, perhaps, than any similar American figure in more than half a century. Whether he becomes president will depend in part on how ready we are as a nation to confront truth rather than cliches when we struggle to address this nation's problems and heal its wounds.

  1. Senator Obama supposedly sat until 2.00 am and wrote his speech HIMSELF. But have you noticed that he ALWAYS has to have his speeches in his hands and cannot speak from the heart as does Hillary Clinton. Poor man, so he sat until 2.00 am, while our soldiers stay up awake all night to protect him and his waffle. WE Americans would give our and do give our lives for America and always will. Yet, HE STATES he could NEVER disown, his preacher or his white grandmother. He cannot disown someone who is a traitor to this country. What a nerve. I would disown my own sister were she to utter such damnable words spewed from that lunatic....GOD DAMN AMERICA, that means you and I and our brave men and women who have lost their lives. Senator Obama and Mrs. Obama are no more patriotic than the man in the moon. How dare he catergorize me and others as "the typical white women". When Hillary Clinton voted for war to protect this country from Weapons of Mass Destruction which turned out to be lies, would the Senator have gone agains the supposedly absolute true intelligence, no she believed our president no time to argue, that means that Senator BH Obama thought that he had the right answer, go against all the truth supposedly from our Intellegence and British Intelligence, so he, never a soldier, thinks he would have been correct in his assumption. Give me a break and he wants to be the Leader of the free world.Vote for the fute of this country, not for the downfall, things are bad enough.

  1. Wow there is a lot of fear in that last post. Im from the UK, you guys do NOT need another white male president, its time to switch. Be it a woman or a non-caucasian. The problem is there would be so much pressure on that person when elected to deliver it would take someone really special. When we had Thatcher, she did the wrong (but expected) thing by trying to proove women could be leaders by tryin to mirror the behaviour of a man. Obama would be great, but if he gets in, lets hope he doesn't try and be white. And if he does screw up, make sure it don't put you off going outside the white-caucasian ball-park

PS (We all came out of Afrika - we're all black on the inside)

  1. Does anyone realize that when he speaks to his audience he uses a "prepared" speech written by his speech writers - same with Michelle Obama. Does anyone realize that Barack Obama didn't want to speak to the press on Monday because he said his speech writers were working on an important speech for him and he didn't want to spoil it by talking to them (the reporters) before he gave it.

You people are stupid. He may have had input in the speech, of course, but he read the speech from a teleprompter. How hard is that. Most of it wasn't even his own words.

  1. The female who claim to be African American, I don't believe that she is. She sounded very bitter and one who has not had a black experience. I agreed with one statement she made which is Wright doesn't reflect the Black church theology, neither is she a reflection of the Black community. All of us have experienced racist and have learned to rise above it. She sounds bitter and stuck in the old plantation mold of house person. If you are a christian how could you be so bitter and blind sided. Haven't you heard of forgiveness, better still he who is without sin, cast the first stone. Can she cast the first stone? She need to wake up, I don't believe American is hardly sleeping. What kind of lies has she told. Is she really African American or an imposter? She also needs to look at the tapes all the way through instead of just 10- 20 seconds carefully choosen to view. I'll pray for her.

  1. As a former German studies major, I'd just like to weigh in here that comparing Reverend Wright--and by extension Mr. Obama--to Hitler is absolutely beyond the pale (Hitler despised religion, among many other things, as we know). I don't know if "kh" is African-American, or female, but I wouldn't believe anything else he or she writes here. I'd also expect a bit more respect and humility from a God-fearing Christian. But anyway...

  1. Here is what is wrong with Obama and the speech: it was a reaction to a problem he created. If he had given the speech for the good of race relations - it would have been a flash of brilliance. But, what he was really doing was trying to dig himself out of a hole - he was trying to excuse himself - and he was trying to change the subject.

I don't know who gets polled in these thing since I have never (in 54 years) been asked anything - nor has anyone I have ever known - but I can tell you that I can't find anyone who is swayed by this. It seems like the media is trying to bamboozle us by telling us over and over that this was a historic speech. It was not. Obama played the Race Card to double-talk himself out of trouble.

  1. I would second #44. Obama does harken us back to Lincoln. Like Lincoln ( also from Illinois and with only a handful of years in congress), Obama is ready to lead. People are following Obama because he has a vision for uniting this country. He inspires us to awaken our own hope for America. May it all lead us to a better future for our country.

He again uses sounds bytes that anyone can state the obvious.

Obama needs to totally move away from that church/preacher.

I have one question. For all of you who enjoyed the speech and thought he explained away everything.
Have you already been dipping in the kool-aid?
For the comment from #53 He inspires americans by awakening our hope for America while silencing your minds to the truth about him and who he really is. To bad he isn't real.
Get with it America wake up!!!!!!!!!

  1. It is amazing the fire this race episode has inflamed. What I don't understand is how can you judge Obama's belief system by what his pastor stated in a moment of passion? I doubt this is something J. Wright has preached week after week, but a sermon that took place one time with the comments lasting less than a minute. Yet it has caused the stir of the nation. Not making any kind of excuse, but we all often give in to human passion uncontrolled by God, and at times, we do and say things that would undoubtedly cause onlookers to say he or she is not a christian saying and doing things that are totally out of character. Race is something most of America would love to sweep under the rug, because most of the people in our country were not affected like the black race in America has been. Like a bruised toe, when this issue is touched, reactions differ among blacks of which I am. Born and raised in D.C., born in the 60's, I was pounded with what happened to my people all throughout school and it had a negative affect on me toward whites as a child. A lot of bitterness and revenge grew within me toward them as a youth. I didn't understand everything, just knew we weren't treated equally as a race of people. Barack Obama has proven that he has not one ounce of bias in his blood. This is not about race. He is for the American people as a whole. This country has serious, serious issues beyond race, of which he is seeking to take on. The current presidency has taken us so far in left field, no matter who is the new president, will have to get a lot of dump trucks to clean up the mess left behind. As a country, we are so morally bankrupt, til we love to feed on garbage. Its so hard to talk about positives and the good. We'd rather wait like a starving hienna for any sight or sound of dead weight to feast on. Its indicative of where we are as a nation. I know the word of God very well. I study it for myself. I let God, through the Holy Spirit, lead and guide me into all truth. Therefore I don't "depend" on my pastor or any pastor for spiritual guidance. I can go directly to Jesus and get it from Him. There are many who stand in American pulpits that preach from the hellish torch of Satan, black, white and all races of so-called preachers. But as the pewwarmer, you must know the truth for yourself, to separate what is truth and what is error. Accept truth no matter who it comes from and despise and reject error just the same. Let not the smoke confuse your senses as to what is really going on here. This is politics people and not a religious election. Senator Obama is a great politician who happens to attend church let many Americans do. He just decided to run for the most coveted position in the U S, the presidency. So get off this race garbage and focus on things this country can do to first improve itself and then set a good example for the rest of the world. The man or woman who vows to work hard to that end...more power to him or her. We are at war, soldiers are dying (4,000 so far), crime and violence in the U S is the highest since the days of Noah, there are floods in over 250 cities of America, fires, tornadoes, earthquakes, rape and molestation, greed, robberies and murders, Americans losing their homes in record numbers, our economy is on brink of collapse. Is anyone seeing what I am.

  1. I believe that anyone who has something negative to say about this speech is ignorant and needs to work on their listening skills. Senator Obama eloquently addressed almost every major issue concerning his campiagn, including his relations with his pastor, his background, and his outlook on our country. If you people are against him then just come out and say it, dont take a great speech like this one and just attack it because you do not like him. Niether Senator Clinton nor Senator McCain could ever make such a compelling speech of this magnitude by themselves like Senator Obama has done. The man's work and dedication to America speaks for itself.
