Obama survives pastor controversy, maybe
Even as fresh polls suggest that Barack Obama emerged rather unscathed from the controversy over his former pastor, new potentially troublesome remarks emerged today.
This time it's church newsletters from the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.
NBC News reported today that newsletters at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago while Wright was in charge reprinted writings that could be construed as anti-Israel. Obama had already told the Jerusalem Post that Wright was "outrageously wrong" to reprint a Los Angeles Times column from a Hamas leader, NBC reported.
A Pew Research Center poll out today said that the Wright controversy has attracted the most attention of any event so far in the presidential race, and that 51 percent of voters believed that Obama had done an excellent or good job handling the situation .
Also, an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Wednesday night found little significant damage to Obama's candidacy after days of coverage of portions of Wright's sermons in which he blasted the US government for its treatment of minorities and suggested that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks were at least partly the result of US policy in the Middle East.
In the poll, 32 percent said Obama had addressed the Wright issue "sufficiently" with his speech on race relations last week in which he repudiated the comments but not the man, while 26 percent said he needed to do more and while 31 percent either hadn't seen the speech or had no opinion. Among those who saw the speech, 47 percent said Obama had done enough, while 37 percent he had not.
The survey, conducted Monday and Tuesday, also found that Obama's favorable-unfavorable numbers dropped only slightly to 49 percent positive, 32 percent negative.
Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, had her favorable rating drop to 37 percent, the lowest the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll has recorded since March 2001.

Obama is staying strong, Clinton is losing ground. For anyone who might still be confused and disillusioned about how difficult, if not impossible, it is for Hillary to win the nomination or the general election.
I guess cliton's camp is using every cheap means to defame Obama and cut his lead. But everything is proving wrong and it is Clinton who is suffering from adverse effects of her own negative propaganda. Go obama go
You got that right!!!!
Please vote for Barack Obama. We need unity right not, not division.
Obama Nomination = McCain win = 4 more years of bloodshed.
its dififult because she's an Idiot and a liar..
Why is it not big News headlines when John McCain's 'spiritual guide' (his words not mine) says that America's job is to destroy Islam and another endorsement HE SOUGHT was from a man who has made statements that were anti-gay, anti-Islamic, chauvinistic and blamed Hurricane Katrina on homosexuals. Where is that coverage? They sure can dig on this Wright guy... wonder if there isn't some blatent racism occuring within the media?
Here's a website that discusses how the sub-prime mess came to be. It's 10 pages long, and a bit dense, but a very good read.

GO obama, people, i hope, understand that the views of his pastor are not his and that he actually wanted the best for this nation. Seriously, why would he want to run for pres if he believed America was D***ed ? GO OBAMA 08!!!
The American people are a smart people. We realize our friends, family, associates, and yes, even pastors, are not monolithic with our own views.
Even my spouse and I have differing views on some issues. It amazes me how the media are trying to keep this hurtful controversy going, when the American people have moved on. May we please get on to the issues at hand, and judge our candidates based on their own actions, sayings and records. Obama has dencouned and rejected Wright's comments. Like any good Christian, he condemened the sins and left Wright, the person, room to grow and redeem himself. I truly believe that is all any human can do. Show some mercy on the person and condemn the bad deeds. Reverend Wright's issues are his own, and he needs to get on his knees and ask God to forgive him, then he should apologize to all people for his own spirit. Barack is not his pastor's keeper! The press should accept his speech and his life's work as evidence of his own character and move on to the real issues facing this country!
I think the true test of any president is how s/he is able to withstand trials, tribulations, and controversy. Obama has shown unwavering character and maintained the high ground, even in the face of controversy. I think this demonstrates the qualities of a true statesmen.
Obama has already addressed the wright issue...Get over it and move on!!!
The poll this is based on was done by the extremely biased and Obama LOVING NBC they over sampled African Americans by 100. The actual results mention the over sampling but it doesn’t match up with the question about race. This shows 11% were African Americans which would be 77 out of 700. But, they state they oversampled by 100 which means 177 were African Americans (25%). They don’t say what they did with the extra 100 African American respondents. Plus, the African American respondent results have a higher error (since it’s a smaller sample size) so you really can’t say anything about those results. (This poll's results has an error of +/- 7.4%!] NBC is showing their bias with releasing this poll - they absolutely love Obama - Obamas backers own NBC
You're doing a huge disservice to our country with all this yellow journalism.
Here's the not-too-difficult message to extrapolate from all the polls...most people don't care about this! Please spend your time reporting the real issues behind the campaign and stop the Wright-baiting.
Hey while we are bashing the association of Obama with his Pastor ,let us be fair and start a Bi-Partisan investigation , like we did with the Steroid use , I mean lets be Fair here , on what all Pastors have said over the past 232 years of our History as a Freedom Speech country so we don't leave any Opinion out , you all are so wanting to know about Obama's stuff , when there are so many other points of view to be included in the Conceptions of Origination of the Nation under GOD , for crying out loud , this is way more Important than Questions to Candidates and their past efforts to cover themselves up from acts of perjury , and if ready on day one , at 3 o'clock in the Morning , could not have any concept of what is going on in the Whitehouse , but Knows everything about the events going on Everywhere , even the sniper fire , that was , or wait maybe it was not , but before we can determine what is is we need to find out what was was ????? I mean for crying out loud whose is running the country , we got a past of 16 years here that looks like a Train wreck , economically , We got our men and women dyeing and wounded beyond belief and we are setting here having a debate about our pastors , or one in particular , thats totally unfair , to do this without total Investigation of all pastors remarks over the years to see if there is a Pattern of Evolving issues that have created the opinions we are seeing today , I believe so given the Past History of events , oh but there are some in the News Organizations that want to act like this is all so New these words we are hearing , Give me a Break , lets look at those who have actually made grave errors in judgment over and with the Business Of the American people Please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Falwell apologizes to gays, feminists, lesbians

LYNCHBURG, Virginia (CNN) -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell said late Thursday he did not mean to blame feminists, gays or lesbians for bringing on the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington this week, in remarks on a television program earlier in the day.

Why Pat Robertson is Not a Christian
By Rev. GRAYLAN SCOTT HAGLER
I am a dem who has never voted Republican in my life. If Obama gets the nomination, I will either not vote or vote for McCain. He was a member of Rev. Wirght's church for a reason, because he believes in the doctrines of black liberation politics. He is a Harvard graduate who is intelligent enougth to know his own personal beliefs and acts accordingly. His comment about "typical white people" illustrates how he actually thinks and where he is coming from very well.
The psunami of anti-Obama coverage in this race is disconcerting. I wish the media would stop being a pawn of the right wing propaganda machine--Fox News--and start doing their responsibility of providing objective news coverage regarding the people that McCain associates himself with and Hillary Clinton's bizarre cult like group "The Family."
Start doing your job media and STOP being an extended limb of the right wing noise machine. Americans deserve to have objective news coverage and not be continually subjected to the minds of a few that want everyone to adopt their fear mongering perceptions and swallow their crappy policies as necessary.
For heaven's sake. This poll was conducted by interviewing mostly black voters. C'mon, this really isn't a true picture of the way things are. Read the Rasmussen Reports. They are much more reliable. Clinton is up 2% over Obama nationally. Nice try though NBC.
If the comments didn't hurt before what else that the church have to say that will hurt Obama now? The vast majority of Americans are intelligent. They know that its unfair to condemn a man for what his pastor says. Now matter what they bring up about the church, as long as its not coming from Obama I DON'T CARE.
The old way condemns a former cabinet appointee as a 'Judas' for using his free will and endorsing a former office holder's wife... The new way freedom of choice.
In Christian lore, the saving of the world could not have taken place w/o this Judas person.
Rev. Wright's words were taken out of context. No doubt he was fiery in some of his language, but many of us have near relatives as intemperate in their words, yet we do not abandon them. Their language is not our language. Such guilt by association is unAmerican. We reject such guilt-by-association in how the nation has chosen to define its ideals, our ideals, despite some of our slave-owning, Indian-hating, Asian-excluding fellow Americans. They are all part "of this country that I love," as Senator Obama tells us. Hillary's lies concerning sniper fire, being anti-NAFTA, etc, etc, however, are in a different league. SHE mouths these lies, repeats them with an amazing open smile of seeming honesty. She is the very picture of someone who is lying without a shade of embarrassment, appearing fully to appeal to the listener. How can we trust her, now we have seen her lie again and again to us, smiling, laughing, wearing the shamrock green on St. Patrick's Day? We can see already how she will lie to the American people, from Day One, as President. How can she protect us if she cannot tell the difference between fantasy and reality when she picks up the red phone at 3 a.m.? Is this the finger we want on the red button? Or the President whose state of the union address we want to listen to? Who can trust her?
I guess even if the majority of voters want to move on to important issues, like a tanking economy and unending war, the media aren't ready to move on. Sen. Obama was right: we can play it over an over again and distract the public from what really matters, or we can try and address real problems and work together to improve our standing in the world and within the country itself. Looks like the media prefer the former.
Also, No. 17 Kate @ 4:06 p.m., do some more reading: Sens. Obama and Clinton are tied nationally at 45%. Nice try, though, Kate.
George H. W. Bush was one of Bill's idles when he Gov. of Arkansas and Hillary herself started out as a Republican. Instead of working through a Health Care deal for every American. Bill rammed through Ronald Regan's brainfart idea NAFTA. Which I am not totally convinced Hillary supported entirely. They deregulated the media ownership laws allowing Rupert Murdoch to own FOX News and the Wall St. Journal along with fewer and fewer others who are quickly consolidating ownership of the media down to only a hand full of companies then they killed all them poor folks out in Waco, Texas and the list just goes on and on. The Clinton, Bush dynasty must end lest ye find yerself subjects of the Queen.
Why isn't the "mainstream media" not constantly airing the clip of Hillary telling her Bosnian war stories with the actual footage of what really happened being overplayed endlessly like the Wright rhetoric day in and day out? Obama didn't say that crap! Rev. Wright did. What Hillary Clinton the big 42nd dan free mason herself is doing here is using a new "angle" to silence free speech even further. By saying he shouldn't be listening to what Wright is saying and by doing that it makes him a party to the rhetoric. Next they will be convicting people for what they watched on TV. Kennedy was opposed to secret society's and gave a pointed speech specifically about there dangers.
I voted for Obama in my state's primary because I bought into his change mantra, and, although I voted twice for Bill Clinton, I do not want that couple back in the White House. The Wright controversy changed my thinking. If a Republican presidential candidate (or Hillary Clinton, for that matter) spent 20 years being mentored by an anti-American, anti-black, anti-semitic hate monger and then condemned his words but not the man on the grounds that he did good things for the white people in his neighborhood, the entire country would turn away in disgust. Obama deserves the same response, so I will vote for McCain in November.
The best stratagy for the Republicans is to just to take the high road and not interfer with the Democrtic contenders airing their dirty tricks and how they really feel about each other. It sort of reminds me of junior high school kids standing up in the audatorium and giving speeches about why they should be elected class clown.
For those interested in Obama's 12 year elected record - here is a summary
a. The 800+ bills that Obama wrote or sponsored in IL

b. His US senate bills on WW threat reduction, government ethics, and immigration reform that he co-sponsored with Senator Lugar, Coburn and and Hagel.

c. The expanded health care he passed for 150,000 people
d. Risk his US Senate run with a no-holds-barred position on Iraq when nearly the entire Congress was beating the war drums

e. Risk his white-house run with an unpopular position to strike Pakistani targets if Musharraf did not act

f. Offer to meet with enemies with preparation but without preconditions (similar to positions of Reagan and Nixon that lead to detante w/ Soviet Union and China)
I'm with Ann B. Smith. If a candidate for national political office were a member of a skin-head "Christian" church for 20 years, do you think that might be a little relevant? I wouldn't stay in a church with a hate-mongering pastor, and neither would most of us. If Obama is the nominee, the Swift-boaters are going to chew him up and spit him out. Forget about Hillary. That's nothing. This is what you get when you fawn over a political new-by whose life experience has been having a single-parent mother and being an "organizer" in Chicago. McCain's camp must be drueling over the prospect of Obama winning the nomination. Barry Obama was playing with GI Joes in Indonesia while McCain was fighting a war and being tortured. McCain will condemn the actions of the Swift-boaters, pat Barry on the head, and say "Your day will come someday, young man." And it will work.
should we blame all police for the racist police?
Not sure what the NBC comments are about, but here are some poll figures from a variety of sources, including NBC:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls
What's missing for me (and I have no way of easily figuring it out -- might someone else have a "truth table" of sorts) are the constituencies polled by the various polling organizations since the numbers are clearly different.
Directly from Rasmussen Polls today:
Democratic Presidential Nomination Clinton 46% Obama 44% Clinton +2
Read it for yourself. Do a Rasmussen search. It's there. This is a nationally run poll done everyday. NBC/WSJ polls were over a number of days and primarily polled to black voters. It's in the fine print if you want to read it..
To Doug, Ann and perhaps Roberta -- have you watched all of Wright's sermons (those in question) for context. At least from what I saw (various youtube offerings) he comes across as more of the fire and brimstone type than a race hater. I've heard much worse on late night gospel-bible-belt TV (intimations or outright blasting of various "unholy" folks where unholy is in the eyes ot the holier than thou :) ).
Regardless, it just isn't credible to lump Wright in with Skin Heads or KKK or any number of other avowed hate groups.
It WOULD be rather nice, actually, if other pols took a page from Obama's book and did seek to find common ground -- we all have our prejudices and collectively, we're not all crazy (there's some truth to and reasons for those prejudices). Most folks have good hearts, and Obama's approach seems most likely to be able to get those good hearts together for the greater good.
Chris, I've looked at some more of the sermons. Wright's statements are outrageous. They can't be defended. The U.S. government invented HIV to oppress people? This is cooky, insane talk. It makes creationists look reasonable. Add to that all the anti-white, anti-semitic, anti-Italian and anti-American talk. And contrast it with the now painfully-obvious hypocritical "you're pulling the race card" crap that the Obama campaign pulled in South Carolina, and the picture begins to sharpen. Apparently this is the new politics that will change the world. What is old has become new again!
Obama is unelectable. Sorry to be the one to break the news to those of you who bought one of the 76 trombones he brought to town.
I can't vote for Obama after seeing this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVeFVtcdSYY&feature=related
I can not see how Senator Obama can preach inclusive policies and yet continue to be a member of an organization that preaches divisiveness.
Imagine someone running for Prime Minister of Israel saying it's OK for him or her to be a member of Hamas or Hezbollah, because he or she disagrees with the part of Hamas/Hezbollah policy that calls for the destruction of Israel, that he/she is only focused on the many good social programs of these two organizations (of which there are many).
kwrob,
The Limbaugh story is mostly myth. He came out with that story after it was exposed that some republicans had been doing just the opposite of what Limbaugh now claims. Republicans have been voting in large numbers for Barack Obama in the DEMOCRATIC open primaries, and gaming the DEMOCRATIC caucuses from day one.
Limbaugh is using reverse psychology on you to cover up. As always, they think you people are all just stupid peasants, and cash COWS! to be duped, and used as cannon fodder.
The REPUBLICANS have been trying to choose the weakest DEMOCRATIC candidate to run against in November. And also to prevent the possibility of a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama DREAM TEAM match up.
I am really surprised the media has not picked this fact up with all their experts, and analyst. It’s as plain as the nose on your face. This is why Obama has mostly only been able to win the little red state caucuses, and primaries. And no big blue states primaries.
If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate.
Hillary Clinton has actually already won the democratic nomination if you remove the republican vote fraud. Does this really surprise anyone after the 2000 and 2004 elections. :-(
They have no respect for the constitution, or the democratic process. They have no SHAME!!!
jacksmith...
.Barack Obama should absolutely be held responsible for Rev. Wright’s comments. This is not an endorsement from a minister he barely knows.
Those who brush this off are obviously not Jewish and it's ok for Obama to have set there for 20 years and listened to this racist propaganda?
It's not ok.
This shows moral judgment.
Oprah left that church after hearing this garbage and took a high moral road.
Obama was caught in a lie regarding all this.
First, he said he had never heard these sermons, then admitted he had & he sat silent!
He points his finger at Clinton for her war vote, claiming she showed bad judgment. Yet, he continued showing bad judgment for 20 years.
History has taught us you do indeed have to have the courage to stand for what is right.
Recall the saying "When they came to get the Jews I said nothing, when they came to get the Poles. When they came to get the homosexuals, the teachers, the intellectuals, the gypsies, I said nothing.
When they came to get me I realized, I was the only one left.
It took tremendous courage for some in Germany those many years ago. They stood up for what they believed and paid a high price.
Obama, who I used to support, has shown he has caved in to pressure from his own group, even in the face of terrible wrong.
Obama is a moral coward and we are fools if we put him in the White House.
I think Chelsea should distance herself from her parents. after listening to them for her 27 years she must know what they stand for...but wait she is a chip off the block..
1. she said that she did not speak to reporters..to a 9th grader..classy reply and maybe a judgment issue...family genes..
2. when asked if Monica would hurt her Mothers credibility, she replied to the student that it "was none of your business"..of course, it was not responsive to the question asked..but that does seem to be the Clinton campaign that Hillary's credibility is none of the voters business.
3. i guess Chelsea also forgot that she did not have to run from snipers in Bosnia, because she apparently did not remind Hillary for several weeks before the news clip surfaced.
But maybe she will run for Congress and this college tour repeating the mantra is good practice. Running of course without a last name..after she makes a little more money at the Hedge Fund she works for, learning Moms Money Magic in cattle futures and middle east funny money.
If Obama is under the microscope over Rev Wright, I would be curious as to Hillarys parenting skills, which seem a lot more important on character and integrity that an few sermons blown up by the media. And ties in with Hillary abandoning her cat to the housekeeper. Family warmth and honesty.
It is interesting to note, as soon the public became aware of the Obama/Wright connection, following a phone call to Mr. Wright from Mr. Obama, Mr. Wright was instantly silenced and retired. Is there something more we are not supposed to hear?
And after Mr. Wright was been silenced, the fact still remains that Mr. Wright has been Mr. Obama’s mentor and spiritual teacher for over 20 YEARS. And that up to recent negative press, Mr. Wright was on Mr. Obama’s Spiritual Advisor Committee campaign team. Mr. Obama cannot make excuses regarding this or deny it regardless how well his staff spins speeches for Mr. Obama.
And add to this Michelle Obama’s separatist-racist connection to Farrakhan and Chicago's Trinity United Church trumpeting Barack Obama AKA Barack Hussein Obama as the second coming of the messiah. And Michelle Obama’s statement she “has never been proud to be an AMERICAN in her adult life".
And for those who don’t know that Obama campaign was originally funded by the Food for Oil Program in Iraq, I suggest you read the following article:
http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/03/obamas_iraqi_oil_for_food_conn.html
Obama 2008 ! The strength of hope.
* Corporate research has recently discovered that "hope" is a hardwired genetic part of us all and are now working diligently on a virus similiar to HIV/Aids that will destroy the hope inside those considered to be a threat to the leaders of the New World Order.
I may have to cast my first vote for a Republican. I have trouble understanding why the Democrat elites (Kennedy, Kerry, Richardson, Dodd...) are giving Obama a free pass. Many Democratic voters are deeply offended and angry about the Pastor's remarks and feelings. The split in the Democratic Party is certainly not the fault of Senator Clinton. Even if she were to get out of the race today, the split would remain. Has the Democratic Party become the party of hypocrites?
i no this had nothing to do with obama but im in love with brandon

I suspect that many online dirty tricks have been used by Obama supporters, for in addition to the never ending avalanche of nasty sarcastic posts from pro Obama bloggers ... the unprecedented online fund raising by the Obama camp ... the online dominance by several pro Obama websites, like Huffington ... and, this recent blocking of anti-Obama bloggers, several times, when I posted anti-Obama, Pro Clinton, pro McCain posts to sites who guranteed the aminitiy of my email address ... I ended up getting hundreds and hundreds of pieces of spam in my mail box shortly after each time I posted.
