Poll gives McCain edge on defense, but not Democrats on economy
The latest national poll offers some more good news for presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain and more worrisome numbers for Democrats.
McCain is in a statistical tie with both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, according to the CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released this morning. In hypothetical November match-ups, Obama draws 47 percent to McCain's 46 percent, while Clinton gets 49 percent to McCain's 47 percent. Both those edges are well within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
The more intriguing finding is that while voters give McCain a sizable edge over both Democrats in how they believe he would handle terrorism and the war in Iraq, they don't give a similar edge to Clinton and Obama over McCain on dealing with the economy.
On terrorism, 75 percent of respondents said McCain would do a good job, compared to 58 percent who said that of Obama and 57 percent for Clinton.
On the economy, which Democrats see as their strong suit, 69 percent of voters said Clinton would do a good job, while 67 percent said that of Obama. But 65 percent said so of McCain, though he has acknowledged he is far better schooled in matters of national security than the US economy.
The poll, conducted March 14-16, did find that voters gave the Democrats an advantage in dealing with healthcare.

The president of the United States does not need to be schooled in economics, but rather needs to surround himself with trustworthy, rational economist advisors. The president is the Commander in Chief of the military, and must be experienced in matters of defense. It is the president who decides where the military goes, when they go (even without a formal declaration of war from congress).
John McCain may be ignorant on economic matters, but you can fix ignorant. Democrat economic plans (i.e. "I want to take those profits") are stupid, and you can't fix stupid.
And every day the Dems snipe at each other gives McCain the edge. Unlike like the GOP candidates, who all pretty much bowed out with class, ONE of the Dem candidates seems hellbent on bringin the party down even though it is close to statistically impossible for them to win. Even Huckabee, who stayed at the dance much longer than he should have, didn't hurt the overall party and didn't drag McCain down with him.
The difference is the GOP wants to win, doesn't care who the nominee is, the Dems seem to be so selfish that if they personally can't be the nominee, they'd rather take the whole party down. Well, not them, just one of them, fill in the blank as the facts require.
Who are they polling? IF these figures are even remotely accurate, this entire system has to be a setup. I don't like any of the candidates personally. I would be surprised if McCain received more then 20% of American's support. This is ridiculous and has to be inaccurate
if maccain wins its got nothing to do with luck,
it just means 50 million people are stupid as fkuc
McCain all the way.Obama OR Clinton would be a very weak President in all areas
needed to run this country which is already in A MESS
I Think John McCain is not the right President for our country, he doesn't a clue of what is he is doing. He is like another Bush, Both President Bush and John McCain are are not the right people to be president in this case John McCain he want to stay in Iraq a hundred more years. even more. hundred of inocent people are been killed daily plus hundred and hundred of American soldiers too are been killed. I am against the war for the biggining and still are. War is not the anwer there another way and that way is put and end to this war. Latinos can make a difference in this election I am voting on November for Obama because he can bring change, hope, and a future that we deserved. There a big majority of Latinos and John McCain is not getting my vote on November.
we can a make a difference go there and vote. si se puede hacer la diferencia vomos a votar.
yes we can make a diffence go and make your vote count.

What do any of the the three leading presidential candidates know about the economy? Which one of them has run a business or had to worry about managing or company? The answer to that is none! All these three career politicians know is tax and spend. We had a chance to have a nominee that understood business and how America works, but we didn't like him becuase he was a Morman. We'd rather elect a female of dubious integrity, a black man who goes to a church that professes hate for America, and a former POW that says he knows little about the economy. To them, getting their hands on the economy is a way to promote their social programs.
I believe the American people are slowly starting to realize that if they vote in a democrat that their taxes are going to skyrocket. The economy is struggling and democrats want to pile on new government programs that will only kill the economy. Government-run healthcare, "free" college education, massive environmental regulations, etc, etc. all need one thing, money to pay for these programs. The only way to get this money is by raising everyone's taxes. The "rich" will only be taxed so much. They have the means to make their money untouchable to taxes. The "rich" also are the people who hire people. Tax the rich and bye-bye jobs.
It's funny, everyone is focused on the Democrats, but no one is even asking who McCain will pick for VP. Once he has an opponent, his selection will become extremely important because of his age and health. There's a great thread about that here:

McCain will equal 4 more years of Bush Policy.
Can the world survive 4 more years of that brand of insanity?
1. Edges (or leads) are not what the margin of error is meant to be applied to (it is each candidate's polling numbers that are plus or minus the margin of error). Under typical polling conditions and statistics, this means that if the poll is repeated, there is a 95% chance (1 in 20) that the new results will fall within this range...for each candidate -- NOT the lead or edge.
2. Neither poll shows a "statistical tie."
3. What these results DO show is that the probability that Obama truly leads McCain is 62.8%. >>
4. What these results DO show is that the probability that Clinton truly leads McCain is 74.3%.
5. What this article demonstrates, once again, is that political reporters and pundits do not understand what a margin of error is. Can't somebody -- anybody -- take the lead on this? Consult a statistician if necessary? Day after day after day I see the same mistake made on every news channel I've watched and in every article I've read. You are all doing your viewers and readers a disservice by continuing to misuse the margin of error and it's true statistical meaning.

I believe the democrats candidates has the best package, and that hillary will bring our troops home at the beginning of next year.
OBAMA FELL FOR THE MEDIA TRAP
Today, we are experiencing one of the saddest moments in this Nation’s History. Economic Recession, Collapse of the Housing Market, loss of jobs, Valueless Dollar, bleak future for our youth, as millions of them will be coming out of high schools and Universities with no prospect for jobs, yet these two Networks and their affiliates spent the entire week talking about a little known Black Preacher called Jeremiah Wright.
Pastor Wright never came on National TV to preach any message of hate, or division. All he did was preached to his Black Congregation, in a little corner in Illinois, about their position in Today’s America, and what they need to do in order to empower and emancipate them selves from the status quo. It was your Network who went out and bought the tapes/ DVD of the Pastor’s Sermon and started showing them to the public. Your aim is to bring racial divide and split the union among the Black voters as they are now coming out in record numbers to make a bold statement through the ballot. Now you are running scared and spreading hate. We are now too smart for that and we have “figured you out”.
It is very easy for you in the media to play on sound bites. You can just go to the Bible and extract some of the statements made by Jesus Christ, and put them into sound bites. If you have never seen a Bible or followed the entire text to see the circumstances under which Jesus Christ made those statements, one will automatically conclude that this man must be either wicked, sexist, or anti-Semitic.
I dare you, and challenge you both to play the entire sermon of Pastor Wright on your Network and let the public get the entire picture, and then make a decision. You all have taken this sound bite thing too far and always getting away with it. This is how you completely distorted the message of Minister Louis Farrakhan and try to make him irrelevant to American History and the Black Struggle. Pastor Wright had said more than a billion good things that have changed the lives of countless Americans (Blacks, Whites, Asians, and Latinos) most especially our Black People. These messages got them from Jail to Yale, from being a bum to disposing of bombs. He is so far from Anti- America, or unpatriotic person that you are trying to portray that those of us who knew about his contributions to the upliftment of America and its Citizens, are very outraged by your divisive comments through you Networks. If he was so anti- America, how come he proudly wore the flag, and put his life on the line to die for America when People like Bill Clinton, Dick Chaney, Donald Rumsfeld and George Bush were missing in action? After listening to the sermons of Pastor Jeremiah Wright after all of this hoopla, I just think the people like you need to recommend him for the Nobel Peace Prize or the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Has any one in the Media ask Pastor Wright how many young kids who are members of his congregation currently putting their lives out on the line fighting for this Country in Iraq, and Afghanistan?
In this day and age, especially in our corporate world, we seem to be mixing up the essence of Churches and other places of worship for a Social Club or a feel good gathering place. You go there on a Sunday Morning, just because you pay a hefty offering; automatically the Pastor must customize his message to your needs. It must be PH balanced and Politically correct for sensitive Americans. I do know about you, but the only reason that some of us go to church is to listen to a Pastor that is filled with the anointing of Holy Ghost, that will preach to me and condemn me and my society for our sins, and at the same time lift us up from our iniquities. I am quite sure that Pastor Wright knew who Senator Obama is and what his movement is all about. What you all are failing to realize is that Pastor Wright like any other great men of God who have been persecuted for righteousness sake must give God’s message as is it.
I love Senator Obama for all that he stands for, and his direction for America, but it is a shame that he will fall face flat for this media trap. He has no right to condemn the message from a man of GOD in order to gain Political Correctness of favor. He may not agree with it personally, and that is fine, but to say that he condemns it, that to me is totally wrong. We are not talking about any ordinary campaign supporter. Senator Obama is a product of Pastor’s Wright message. Are you not proud of how he and his wife Michelle turned out to become today in this American Society? His message all along is to unify America along racial line. He is a product of racial harmony. For the more than 20 years that he and his Wife have been members of Pastor Wright’s Church, and have held Public Offices for equal number of years. Have they not demonstrated the embodiment of all that is good about America? Why now, are you trying to degrade his movement and his work? Is it because Hillary Clinton complained bitterly that you all have been soft on Obama, so you feel justified in digging up this unrelated mess, when we the voters need to be informed about relevant issues such as the Economy, Health Care, Education, Jobs and the Senseless Iraq War?
If Pastor Wright was so divisive, how come he is supporting a candidate who is preaching racial equality, and change for a better America?
It seems to me that the Media is so embarrassed after all of these years of honeymooning with George Bush instead of reporting and researching the facts, that after five years of a senseless war, that you none of you ever opposed or questioned, bankrupt economy, loss of homes and jobs, it now boils down to two sound bite sermons of Pastor Jeremiah Wright.
THE REVOLUTION BY AMERICA’S YOUTH TO CHANGE THIS NATION AND MAKE IT COMPETETIVE AND RELEVANT AS A SUPER POWER IN THIS 21ST CENTURY’S GLOBAL ECONOMY WILL BE TELEVISED BUT NOT ON YOUR NETWORK.
"On terrorism, 75 percent of respondents said McCain would do a good job, compared to 58 percent who said that of Obama and 57 percent for Clinton."
. . . well, good for mccain. . . but, i suspect he'd do even better on this poll question:
"Which potential candidate do you believe would ignore an imploding economy to spend untold billions fighting ill-advised foreign wars with rogue nations?"
It is just "wonderful" that Americans give John McCain passing marks on the economy. He admits that it is an area that he admits to knowing very little about. I think when the campaign gets in full swing and the recession deepens and gas prices become even worse he will be mercilessly attacked on his lack of knowledge about the economy. It is "an ace in the hole" that only Jack Cafferty and a few others seem to acknowledge; but, if the Dems keep tearing the party apart it won't matter anyway. The Dems certainly do know how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, as has been said before.
But it is "nice" to know how little Americans actually follow the news and simply assume that McCain and an enlightened inner circle could understand America's economic woes. Maybe Bush, McCain, Bernanke and some of the fine folks over at Bear Stearns could "jawbone" and come up with all the answers necessary to fix all that ales our "wonderful" economy.
McCain is probably a relatively decent person for a politician but he is not what the country needs during such rough seas. You have every right to disagree but that is my opinion.
People in times like these do need to start paying attention to something besides shopping and NASCAR.

That's leave you McCain. Good for you!! Are you happy with the gas prices, economy going down, 2 wars no end? Do you need another pillow?
I'll agree that these polls are useless, but I disagree with a lot of your responses. Do any of you really think that Clinton and Obama are that much more knowledgeable about the economy than McCain? Don't tell me that Obama, who has been a senator for one term, knows more about the inner-workings of the economy than McCain. McCain is simply being honest about his strengths and weaknesses as a politician and is in no way admitting to ignorance when it comes to the economy. Clinton and Obama are in such a heated battle for the Democratic nomination that neither of them would ever call attention to areas where they could improve, like McCain has. McCain started in politics before a lot of voters were even born. He knows how the U.S. economy works. Also, all of you that complain about how much money we are spending in Iraq are failing to realize what will happen when we pull out. At this point, the Iraqis are extremely dependent on our troop presence and our presence in the country is necessary until the country becomes more self-sufficient (which will not be in "100 years" as a lot of you are saying). Also, those of you who are bringing up the country's military spending are not looking at what would happen if Obama or Clinton pulled out of Iraq. All of the money being spent on the war plus even more of your tax dollars will go to Obama and Clinton's ridiculously naive and impractical reform plans. If you want a practical leader who understands the importance of a stable Middle East and who will keep our country's economy afloat without making you pay half of your incomes to the government, please vote for McCain.
How does being a hostage during a war make you militarily savy?
I guess John Kerry would have been more electible if he was caught instead of shot.
Obama is a done deal.
I quit the Dems. I will vote for McCain now. I can't believe that two people of the same party are trying to throw dirt at each other. It is sooo embarrassed to be a Dems now.
VP for McCain;
Gov. Sarah Palin is respected by social and fiscal Conservatives, reformers and indy's. The battle ground is shifting to the mid-west and Gov. Palin has the profile to appeal to those voters. Palin has more executive experience than both Clinton and Obama, and Palin practices straight-talk! Her two years as Governor has resulted in a long list of reforms in government and a 180 degree change in how politics is practiced in Alaska.

One more note: In almost all of the head-to-head McCain-Obama polls, the number of undecided women doubles over a McCain-Clinton poll.
So, McCain is supposed to be president because he is more competent on national security? Because the president should be experiened in the military? Like George W. Bush? Funny...
