Who said what on NAFTA?
Just when you thought "NAFTA-gate" -- the flap over reassuring remarks a Barack Obama adviser reportedly made about NAFTA to Canadian officials -- couldn't get more confusing, it just did.
The Globe and Mail, the Canadian daily, published this story yesterday suggesting that someone in the Hillary Clinton orbit told Canadian officials not to fret about the anti-NAFTA rhetoric the Democratic candidates were dispensing liberally on the campaign trail. Canada cares about such things because a change to NAFTA would affect trade between the two countries.
This is exactly what Obama's adviser, Austan Goolsbee, stands accused of doing: Telling Canadian officials in an informal meeting that the anti-NAFTA rhetoric was merely "political positioning," in the words of a government official who wrote up a memo about it. Clinton and her campaign hit Obama hard over this, accusing of Obama of saying one thing about NAFTA publicly and another thing privately.
Team Clinton has categorically denied that anyone from its campaign did the same thing.

The Canadian people are very sorry that this leak occurred and we are very angry at our right-wing Prime Minister and his staff for interfering or affecting in this US election. I personally and not a fan of our Prime Minister Harper and assure you that our opposition parties will pressure him to get to the bottom of this. Almost all Canadians are excited to see so many Americans excited this year and we wish America the best. One thing to understand is that in any areas that have been brought up in this election on NAFTA (labor standards or environmental laws)...Canadians would be glad to bring this up to a fair and common standard that would benefit both countries.
shame on you hillary
Does it surprise anyone that Hillary Clinton would attack Obama on this issue while secretly doing the same thing? This is, after all, the first first lady to come under criminal investigation. She is also claims "35 years of experience" while not mentioning that 15 years of that experience was at a corporate law firm. Bottom line - she lies. And she'll lie, cheat, steal, attack, and pretty much do anything to get this nomination.
OUTRAGE!!!! How can Hillary say the press is unfair to her when all this week they have propagated the FALSE story that the Obama campaign had contacted the Canadian government with a "wink wink" about NAFTA--- And now AFTER THE TEXAS OHIO PRIMARIES the OUTRAGEOUS TRUTH comes out that IT WAS THE HILLARY CAMPAIGN THAT CONTACTED THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT -- DOING EXACTLY WHAT SHE FALSELY ACCUSED THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN OF! After hundreds of FALSE Obama smears all across the media, there is this one little and way-too-late matter of fact article saying Hillary did it too---still implying that the Obama campaign did it in the first place. THIS ARTICLE DOES NOT EVEN CALL HILLARY OUT FOR BEING THE DUPLICITOUS, CONNIVING MANIPULATOR SHE IS!
It seems that no matter what Obama or his campaign does it is o.k. Somehow there is an excuse for everything. How can that be? There comes a time when we have to answer questions and be real quit crying about it. Quit complaining about dirty campaigns. As the media will be quick to point out anytime Hillary speaks out negatively about Obama.Just answer the questions. We are trying to elect the Commander and Chief of the United States of America for Gods sake. Who is this guy?
The press needs to aggressively follow this story. If the Clinton camp made those reassuring overtures to the Canadians and then lied about Obama do the same, t\Hillary should close down her campaign and go away.
If this is true, and I tend to believe that it is. I really hate negative political adds but when there is dishonesty also exposed I move away from those who would embrace it.
Since Ms. Clinton is now a McCain supporter, I guess I'll vote for the other guy, or the Republican. She can then run as McCain's running mate, as a "McCain Democrat".
I was prepared to support whomever won fair and square. Oops, I forgot this is politics and not necessarily for the good of the people.
Cheryl, this isn't media bias. This is Clinton's campaign being caught red handed in the proverbial "speck in your eye while ignoring the plank in mine" scenario: She accused Obama of contacting Canada to tell them not to worry about NAFTA, while at the same time ALSO contacting Canada to tell them not to worry about NAFTA. And now that the cat is out of the bag, she's denying it. Fact is, both of them did it. Obama it admitted it. Clinton lied about it. If you're not outraged, you're clearly not paying attention.
The next President of the United States of America, that's who he is!!
Wait a second. Why would Canada say something like that tabout Hillary Clinton IF she is pro-Nafta... I mean if she is ,shouldn't the Canadian stick with the story for their advantage... ask yourself if Barack Obama is really against Nafta wouldn't the Canadian stick with the original story to support the hypothetical Nafta loving Hillary Clinton.
So let me get this straight. Clinton made a huge deal about "wink wink" from Obama just before the Ohio/Texas primaries but did "wink wink" herself to the Canadian government. Now that takes real Chutzpah!
Did she think no one would find out?

As much as I can't stand the Bush presidency and therefore what he and the Republicans did to our country - Iraq, health care, the economy, habeas corpus, civil rights, etc.- all of which McCain approves- I am not going to vote for Hillary because she has proved herself to be disingenuous and typical of old school politics. She equates Barack with Ken
Star when she has in fact acted like Carl Rove in playing the fear card, played a part in depicting Barack in attire that would make him look like a Muslim, in fact stated "as far as she knows" he is not a Muslim, (had) her staff call him a druggie, and now a spin on nafta. This is way over the top. I wonder how Ohioans feel now that they know they were duped with the nafta lie. She is the one who isunelectable for liar to be mind,.She is the one who is unelectible
This needs to be a lead story on the front page of AMERICAN papers, not just in Canada. Why is the press burying this?
I think some higher uppers in the Democratic Party should look into this. If true, this is pure deception. I had hope that Democrats could stay above this fray but I'm not sure now. Hillary and her husband has done so much to hurt this party just for the vote. Look back the past 20 years and see how the Democrats' ideas have been sublimated by lies in getting us to fear ourselves.
WHY IS THIS NOT YOUR LEAD STORY TODAY, ONE DAY BEFORE WYOMING?????????????
The media is in bed with the Clintons and anyone without the wool pulled over their eyes knows this.
I think Clinton is getting dragged in to this because Brodie, who leaked the story, made a mistake as to which candidate he said talked to the canadian consulate. The timeline indicates that he first called out Clinton, but after reporters did some work and the secret memo was released, it in fact turned out to be Obama's camp. Even then, the comments attributed to his economic advisor don't really conflict with his message in the primaries-it merely suggests that he would rather not open NAFTA but wants to strengthen labor and enviromental provisions.
As the story has progressed and news outlets started picking bits and pieces, it became more confusing. Reading just one source can be misleading especially when most come with some sort of bias or provide an incomplete picture.
Here's an ed/op that tries to describe what happened.

I live in Ottawa, and I can confirm that CTV leak mentioned Clinton as the group that contacted Canada, not Obama. Obama's economic did however meet Canadian officials over general trade ideas, and economic synergy. Tom Clark is either a biased pro-Clinton supporter at CTV (many Canadian papers and media love her), and the American press wanted so much for her to continue the fight past OHIO. Clearly our American cousins got it wrong, but I would pres Tom Clark of CTV news Washington bureau. He's the key witness here. Hillary got a free ride and she's gloating all the way to Denver now. Hope Kerry has some contacts in Washington's CTV news burreau. He could press the fight for the truth.
Why is this story being swept under the rug by the media? This should be the leading story, front page and all. Hillary Clinton is the monster that Powell said she is. The Clinton(s) will stop at nothing to get into the White House. Now they are throwing out the prospect of Obama as her v.p. how ludicrous is that? Now Run the story and stop bullcrapping! Let the public know the underhanded politics that the Clintons are playing.
