Barack and Bruce: both elitist?

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 18, 2008 01:16 PM

The folks at Slate, the online magazine, just unveiled their latest parody presidential TV ad. This one imagines an attack spot from Hillary Clinton over Bruce Springsteen's endorsement this week of Barack Obama.

It reminds of Obama's controversial remarks about "bitter" small-town voters who "cling to guns or religion."

Then, using lyrics from some of the rock legend's best-known songs, the fake ad says that Springsteen -- a singer so elitist he's called the Boss -- believes that jobs aren't coming back and that small towns are full of losers and are "suicide traps."

"Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen," the narrator concludes. "Wrong for Pennsylvania. Wrong for anyone Born in the USA."

  1. I don't think anyone has been listening to the Boss since the 80s! As for him endorsing BO it means absolutely nothing! No one listens to the Boss! His days are over too!

  1. ' . . . Aint no angel gonna greet me. Its just you and I my friend. My clothes don't fit me no more. I walked a thousand miles Just to slip the skin. The night has fallen, I'm lyin' awake. I can feel myself fading away, So receive me brother with your faithless kiss. Or will we leave each other alone like this on the streets of Philadelphia."

    - from "The Streets of Philadelphia" by Bruce Springsteen

  1. Springsteen was a fool to attach his credibility to the deceptive, ruthless and racist Obama. Who will he be endorsing next, Rev. Wright?

  1. Hey Fred - last I checked Wright wasn't running for President. Don't confuse the two, makes you look stupid.

  1. THE BOSS! Nice endorsement.
Maybe "baseball" and "apple pie" will endorse him next...

    Ha!

Meanwhile I heard that a "lump of coal" came out today in support of HIllary. Of course she spun this to mean that the miners support her...

  1. Thanks, Boss. Never knew you were such a thoughtful and reflective guy.

And Fred Jones, calling Obama racist is the kind of mindless drivel that keeps people away from politics and public service.

  1. It's like those Geioce commercials. Anyone who's become a has been see an opportunity to get in the news by backing Obama.

It's funny, when I was little, I was taught that your political opinion was your own business, and no one else's. Now all of the sudden it's news when someone says they're going to vote for someone. I don't remember all this endorsing four years ago either.

Also, since when do entire institutions carry political offiliations? When a paper endorses someone what does that mean? Is it the owner of the paper endorsing someone, or did all the employees hold an election of their own to decide who to endorse?

  1. Eric, American people and papers have been endorsing presidential candidates for over two hundred years. It is fairly common.

  1. Bruce is way right on this score. He's too much of a gentleman to say that Lady Hillary Macbeth feels entitled to her husband's ex-job. But most Americans dislike and distrust her, and on good evidence. We've watched Hillary lie with a smile on St Patrick's Day about coming under sniper fire in Bosnia. Watched her smile as she knee-caps Obama with distortions on words taken out of context. Watched her smile as she lies to blue collar workers about NAFTA and about her working class identity, she of the multimillions from shady off-shore corporations and with a Yale law-school degree put to the service of union-busting Walmart. Senator Obama shows restraint and class in steering away from negative attacks on her, and whoa! is there a pile of *hit on record with the Clinton dynasty. Pardons in exchange for payback from criminals, Saudi millions for the Clinton Foundation, hundreds of thousands for support of the Colombian free trade treaty, etc, etc. Hillary cries for the camera, chugs down whiskey chased with beer for the barflies, and keeps intimate company with an impeached president caught lying with his hand on the Bible about not having sex with that woman. We citizens of the American Republic denounce and reject the Clinton dynasty. We want our democracy back.

  1. Fred Jones you are mindless to call Obama racist. How can he be racist while his mother is white? He came out of a white womb? Can you imagine insulting your mother even if you are a fool you would not do that let alone a brilliant top lawyer from Harvard. It shows how stupid and idiot you are. If you don't like him fair enough but don't label him with something he not at all.

  1. Obamabots rejoice, your false messiah is about to win the primary nomination. Your bliss will reach new hieghts until november when the republicans crush your, hopes, dreams and aspirations.

Us democrats could have won this time. But the nut jobs who have destroyed our once great party are doing it again. I will have no part of Obama. If Hillary loses I am voting McCain and so are many, many others. Enjoy your pyrrhic victory.

  1. Who else would Bruce Springsteen endorse! Of course he is for Obama. He's a smart guy. What took him so long? Guess he just got disgusted when Hillary started playing "I was born in a small town" by John C.M. and slugging the whiskeys and making up stories about shooting off pistols. We just have to keep going until she gives up this useless campaign she's got going. Please, no one do anything to encourage her!

  1. "...the instant elitism became a dirty word among Americans, any potential for a high culture to develop in their country was tomahawked in its cradle. She quoted Thomas Jefferson to the effect that, 'There exists a false aristocracy based on family name, property, and inherited wealth. But there likewise exists a true aristocracy based on intelligence, talent, and virtue.'"

  1. To Terri: "No one listens to the Boss! His days are over too!"? Lady, please. Eight out ten of Springsteen's post-80's albums went platinum, several of them multiple times (the other two went gold). The guy tours incessantly and still sells out arenas all around the world. So please get a clue. This kind of negative propaganda is transparent, desperate, and just plain embarrassing.

  1. Bruce is the only artist who can tour across the world and sell out every single venue. No one listens to him anymore? You have no idea what you are talking about!

  1. Hey Serena, Go check on ole Obama's early works. You will soon discover he hates white people. He has been a loyal member of "rev" wright's hate church for over 20 years and still defends him. Obama was raised in Hawaii and Indonesia, not the mean streets of Chicago like he wants you to believe. Support who you want, but please don't ignore the facts of what he is!

  1. Obama is no more an elitist than suburbanites are elitist to those Americans who reside in the intercity. The concept of what is important to Obama is important to you and me. Concepts important to John McCain are important to you and me. The only difference is where and what will deside which ideas are rate high or low on list of priorities needing to be addressed by the next president of the United States. The main issue we struggle with, and I am referring to 99% of all Americans, is how to accumulate more money and have it when, where and how we need it. The truth of the matter is John McCain want more money for programs that he believes will benefit the country, the same is true of Hillary Clinton and guess what? The same is true for Obama. I refuse to believe that if McCain becomes president he will have initiate a vendetta against minorities and make life in the United State a miserable place for them, that is absurd and it is equally as asinine as believing that if Obama becomes president he will seek to violate the rights of white Americans in this country. I believe that Ronal Reagan, George H Bush, Bill Clinton and George W Bush wanted this great country to become stronger not weaker. If John McCain wins all of us won’t perish in Iraq and if Hillary Clinton wins the country won’t go broke under the weight of the Health Care cost and if Obama wins our civil liberties will not be taken. We should focus on the issues, Housing, Fuel Cost, Health Care, Iraq and leave the sensationalism to the media.
