Bill Clinton says Obama camp played race card

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 22, 2008 05:22 PM

Bill Clinton became a distraction -- again -- today on voting day in Pennsylvania, at least on the cable TV shows and political blogs.

It started Monday when he was asked about criticism over comments he made comparing Barack Obama's sweeping victory in the South Carolina primary in January to Jesse Jackson's wins in that state. Many Obama backers and black Democrats found that dismissive of Obama's standing and some called it racially insensitive.

But on WHYY radio in Philadelphia, Clinton claimed that the Obama campaign was waiting to accuse him of being racially insensitive. "They played the race card on me," he said. When he thought he was off-air, he followed that up by telling an associate, "I don't think I should take any [expletive] from anybody on that, do you?"

Pressed to explain his comments, Clinton seemed to deny today that he said them, though they are on tape.

Obama was incredulous when reporters asked him today about the former president's comments. "I have no idea what he meant," he said. "These were words that came out of his mouth."

Clinton has been both a help and a hindrance to his wife's presidential bid during the campaign. She claims her experience in the White House as a key selling point on her resume, but he has sometimes gone off message with controversial comments.

  1. This is the same person who went on national TV and stated "I did not have sex with that woman". One thing you can say about the Clinton's is they are both very good at lying.

  1. People cannot understand why Obama stayed with his Preacher so long. Please have those same people explain why Hillary has stayed with Bill so long!

  1. Well he's telling the truth, isn't he? Sounds like many people don't want to acknowledge that.

  1. I really like the Clintons but I'm seeing a really bad pattern here. It's easier to believe their reasons when their is not written/recorded/video-taped proof that says otherwise.

    This is not good.

  1. His truth is, Bill's a loose cannon. Just the kind of person we want wandering around the white house halls for 4 years with no official title or duties, if his wife were to get elected... NOT. It's time to turn the page, we're not going back to the 90s.
OBAMA 08, for ALL The People!!

  1. I'm sick of the Clintons! How could anyone vote for selfish people like that who don't have any conscience?

  1. Exactly what experience did Hillary get from serving as co-President with this guy, again?

And how is he "telling the truth" when denying saying something recorded on tape? Or do you mean for trying to blame Obama for the foot he stuck in his own mouth?

  1. The media wants to inject race into the campaign. Shame on them. For all the journalists going around blatantly or subtly accusing them of racism, wait until it happens to you. Calling someone a racist today is like the new Red Scare. People are using it to gain political advantage or drive up ratings. Shame on the media, and people really should stop listening and start writing emails to stop this from having.

  1. Why does any wife stay with a husband that cheats? I assume that Hillary felt that there was enough love and mutual interest, such as public service, that it is worthwhile.

The more important question is why would someone choose a spiritual advisor whose stance on America and racial relations was so far from his own as Obama states his is from Rev. Wright? Why would he choose to bring his children to hear such anti-American and racial charged sermons unless these views were his views as well?

  1. I wasted two votes on Bill Clinton's failed presidency. Hillary is joined "at the hip" with Bill and cannot escape his legacy of lying. They both would lie when the truth would be better. I think it is in their DNA...lying that is. Vote Obama!

  1. I don't see them as "THE CLINTONS." That implies they are just alike. What husband and wife are? I think Hillary is more honest, clear, consistent, and trustworthy than Bill. Example: from what I read, she basically admitted in the Philadelphia debate that she didn't remember right about the sniper fire at the airport, and also basically asked that we overlook it. Now, that's honestly admitting a mistake, isn't it?

  1. Gottsacker:

You call Carter an embarrassing, memory challenged loser? Please, Carter's IQ is in the high triple digits, unlike "W's" which is no one even near that, and you question his memory: ie-Reagan, "W", not to mention the embarrassing part - "W". And lastly, NO ONE DIED WHEN CLINTON LIED. Stop going to the past to dig up dirt, stick with the current day facts, live in the present, with your "W" president and what he's done to and for our country in the world's eye!!! At least Carter has done more for the world than any former president ever will. He has a conscience...

  1. Good thing that PA is over now.
Good thing because Hillary has to be in LA superior court for Fraud charges on the 25th.
    Great timing!
I haven't heard a peep about her ACTUAL CRIMINAL charges from any dominate media source. Just more gaffes and bloopers and guilt by association charges.
I wonder if PA would have thought better if Barack had blared out all Hillarys corruption the way he was dumped on with Averys, Wright, and Rezko.
Alas it appears this thing will drag on even longer... what a shame. Nobody -NOBODY- should be running for public office while under investigation. Look it up. paulvclinton.com Whether shes guilty or not, thats for a court to decide...but it demonstrates Baracks good nature not to the throw it in her face the was much much more minor things were thrown in his...
