Clinton challenges Obama to N.C. debate

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 22, 2008 10:21 AM

Hillary Clinton's campaign said this morning that Barack Obama is brushing off North Carolina voters -- just like he brushed off criticism like so much lint on his suit's shoulders in an appearance last week in the Tar Heel state -- by not agreeing to debate before the May 6 primary.

The state Democratic Party announced on Monday that it had cancelled plans for an April 27 debate to be broadcast on CBS because of logistical problems. Clinton had accepted the invitation, but Obama had not. He did accept an earlier date, before today's primary in Pennsylvania, but Clinton had not.

“It is unfortunate that Senator Obama has chosen to brush off the people of North Carolina by flatly refusing to debate," Clinton's director in North Carolina, Ace Smith, said in a statement. "But we are willing to move forward with another time and location for the debate so that he has no excuse for not participating. Unfortunately, it is becoming clear that Senator Obama simply does not believe that North Carolinians deserve the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates about how they will fix our economy, bring our troops home and provide quality health care for every American."

The Democrats have debated 21 times, most recently last Wednesday in Philadelphia.

  1. Debates do not help USA and the discipline, dedication, and deliberations. Debates have gone down the gutter for trivia, and distractions. We need the lift Our Greatgrand country up and change washington politics. I my opinion Senator Obama and his voters are agents of change.

  1. "Unfortunately, it is becoming clear that Senator Obama simply does not believe that North Carolinians deserve the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates about how they will fix our economy, bring our troops home and provide quality health care for every American" -- or maybe he feels the people of North Carolina deserve better than a Clinton-Obama "debate". See, everyone? THAT is a negative interpretation. He can speak most effectively without "moderators".

  1. It's obvious why Senator Obama does not want to debate. He cannot handle questions with them being scripted. Wright, Ayers were issues that needed to be addressed. I still have questions about them. If he is going to be the nominee, I want to know alot more about those issues.

  1. There are still issues and Senator Obama is dodging the debate. The last debate on NBC had and kept over 9 million viewers. I would say people are very interested. I am interested and I know everyone knows why Senator Obama will not debate. He can't. We see more of who he is everytime he does.

That's right, Obama hates everyone and doesn't think we in NC deserve to hear people talk. That's right, we didn't have access to the last 21 debates because here in NC, we don't understand technology and don't understand how a television works. This means we also don't have newspapers or watch other political talk shows or read their stances on issues from their websites.

How does Hillary defend the tenet that Obama is running the negative campaign? He didn't say any of this when she refused the NC debate initially.

  1. I think Seantor Obama you should agree to the debate with conditions that EVERYONE will speak about the issues we care about. The Iraq War,Healthcare and THE ECONOMY.

I am sick and tired of hearing about Rev Wright, Ayers and Your Bitter remarks.

I and the people of North Carolina want to know what you are going to do for us to help this economy And bring us affordable Health Care, And to Bring our troops home.

  1. Why does Hillary want another debate? We have had 21. She and her husband and all of America knows that as a black man Barak cannot seem to be too aggressive with her. Racism is not dead in America, despite the progresses made. Barak has to be very careful in his responses; and not being as devious and calculating as her, his responses have to be measured. Enough of debates. Barak is a gentleman and therefore at a disadvantage in them. Just let him at McCain, man to man, where he is not at a gender disadvantage!

  1. We should have more debate because we need learn more each candidate policy in detail. I just found down he got 28% of capital tax in the last debate. He copied Hillary's economy so he is afraid to answer any issues regarding econonmy, iraq war... He has has no substance so his campaing prefer not answering any tough questions.

  1. Why do we call them "debates" instead of "Q&A" sessions? I mean, really. The candidates do NOT debate the issues, they don't sit down candidly and calmly and say, "Why do you think THIS is the better way? What about THAT alternative? What about THIS issue?"
THAT would be a debate. Instead, we get a stupid Q&A where each candidate just says, "This is what I/We will do." and occasionally the opponent responds and there's a little bit of back and forth. But seriously, people, there's no "debating" going on.

Sure, Obama may not have done as well as Clinton in the past "debates", and let's just admit it's not really his forte, at least not compared to Hillary. I understand why she wants another one, she feels she does better there - no one should be deluded into thinking she's just trying to make sure those poor NC folks who apparently slept through the last 21 debates and every news story ever written FINALLY have their chance to hear what the candidates have to say. Please.

  1. So after 21 debates, why should there be a debate in N.C.? There hasn't been much happening since last week when they debated on ABC, which means that there would be no reason to spend the money.

Hillary's arguement that Barrack doesn't want the People of N.C. to see and hear the arguements of both politicians is a load of crap. Why has she only pushed for a debate in these "big" states, where they have the most delegates to give out of the remaining contests)? Do the people of Guam deserve to hear the Candidates face to face? How about those that have already had their primaries but weren't granted a debate (or the money that it brings in)? How come it's ok that these people don't get to hear the candidates face off, but not ok for others?

It seems to me that Hillary doesn't really care about EVERYONE that she is trying to go only for the bigger states out of the remaining contests. In other words, if you don't live in a state where there aren't a bigger amount of delegates, then she doesn't care. This strategy of hers will be the same in the general election, where she will try to stay out of "Red" states, and try to win over "Blue" states, and will not try to hard to win out in "purple" states if they have less delegates than the "Blue" states. She will try to chide McCain for not accepting invitations to debate in states that are more sympathetic to her, while avoiding states that are less sympathetic to her....thus insuring a Republican victory in November.

  1. I've heard all the debates I want to hear. The North Carolina voters will hear directly from each candidate as they canvass the state. Debates don't do a lot to advance anybody's arguments.

  1. One would think that Senator Obama would want to do better than he did in the last debate and not let that last debate be the last negative image voters have of him.

Plus- the debates bring money to the states that hold debates. With the economy as it is- he should do so.

But it is understandable that he runs the risk of another poor performance against the always ready and polished Senator Clinton--so that's probably why he is fearful of debating in North Carolina.

  1. The last TV debate was a total waste of time, it did not answer the real questions want to know and as much as this was the moderators/journalists fault, it was brought down to personal attacks.

NO! more TV debates are now needed, they are only to try and make sensational headlines and TV ratings, plus to allow further smears and attacks.

  1. Obama can't hold a candle to Clinton's debate smarts. He knows it...so avoids debating...that's been his pattern. He only concedes to a debate once the voting publics perception of his unwillingness to debate gets media attention. Then Obama's campaign staff tries to spin the issue in the media to his advantage. Only problem with that is voter's see thru this facade and this hurts his accountability factor which has been very spotty the whole campaign. This is what bothers me about Obama....he can talk the talk, but can't walk the walk. Look at his Senate Voting record: "Extremely Poor Compared to his Senate Peers"....
Just what America needs...another mediocre President w/accountability issues and virtually no experience.

  1. The CBS NC debate was originally scheduled for Saturday April 19th, the first day of the Jewish Passover holiday. While Senator Obama agreed to this date, Senator Clinton, much to her credit, did not agree opting instead for April 27. Senator Obama did not reconfirm the new date.

Senator Clinton should be commended for her respect and religious sensitivity.

  1. Instead of a debate, I suggest a North Carolina event with Senator Clinton and Senator Obama such as a joint visit to a nursing home or a veteran's home. By seeing these great politicians in the same place, at the same time and how they interact with Americans, we just may get a better picture of their compassion and vision than any debate.

Take a moment and read through these comments. The amount of misspelled words and grammatical errors is astounding.

There should be a test on basics at the polling booth. If you don't pass with at least a C average you should have to go directly to the nearest homeless shelter and help feed the poor for a week, without casting a vote!

  1. Who needs another debate. I have had it with Hillary demanding debates every second. Let's face what is important and it is the working poor and health care. Debating each other does not say what kind of leader you are going to be in the White House. All it says it that you can impart cheap shots. Enough with the debates, let's go ahead and pick the person that we think can best lead the country, and that is not a first lady never did anything but talk about what she did when her husband ran the country. NO MORE DEBATES!!!!!!

  1. She needs the debates because she is out of money and they are free.

But she uses them like attack ads. So they are toxic and unworthy to be called debates.

So why do any more of it? It would be poor strategy for the Obama campaign to make him do any more of that.

It feelds the grossest levels of the dialog, as we see from ABC's use of its opporunity. Gross.

  1. Senator Obama:

You must be able to debate if you hope to run against McCain.

You must be able to be held accountable in a one-on-one and not just speak from up high on a podium.

You must be able to answer hard questions, whether you think them trivial or not, if it affects your credibility.

You can not be President if you can not do these things.

Annnnd....what is WRONG with debating on a holiday? Afterall, it only means more people will be available to watch it.
I used to like the Clintons, and I simply could not undrstand why some people did not like them. Until this election, when she showed her true, devious colors.

  1. Hillary is broke and she needs to get as much air time and free publicity as possible . Why should Obama once again cater to this whiner and help her campaign. He as debated 21 times and I think that is enough. If you don't know who you support by now then just toss a coin. Can you not get it. When she wants something she will turn the situation around to seem like he is not once again agreeing with her and giving her what she wants. Like any spoiled brat she rants and rave until she gets her way. Obama should continue to campaign in NC and other cities and forget the debates. Besides all the question have been asked and answered read your paper, watch CNN.

  1. Obama, what have you hide from us that you quit debates right now?
When the media is digging up more about you that Americans need to know, you call it a day and leave a lot of questions unanswered.
If you don't have the guts to face the media, how can you face the nation, the world leaders, and the crisis ahead of all the people. Are you able to stand up for the nation and challenges ahead.
Ideology is good and it is only as good as you can sustain with hard work and determination. Being the one who goes to Virigin Island, and taking a train of comfort to reach diligent Americans, your promises are lack of specifics and hollow. You don't seem to have any substance to carry out a real mission.

You can not say " I rise above" and then at your own rally make insinuating comments. If you are going to rise above, DO IT. Don't just point out how you are doing it. It shows a distinct lack of character.

Obama be held accountable in a one-on-one and not just speak from up high on a podium lecturing and bragging about Hope and Audacity which are high sounding nothing without actions. Since OBAMA has nothing to back up his claims, the least he can do is to show up with specifics to verify the feasibility of his claims.

A president, wins or loses, needs to have courage to confront crisis which should be anticipated in the coming term. Nobody wants a wimp to be the leader of a nation.

  1. It's obvious why Obama has always tried to avoid debate with Hillary, because he can't handle real issues and he uses rhetoric to cover this fact. This explains why he always performances so poorly in debates and he stutters all the time. He can't afford to embarrass himself any more. He knows the more he debates the more Hillary is going to score. But Americans deserve to know better about him. Obama, come out and debate about real issues if you really care about Americans. We don't want to just hear what you say. We want to hear different opinions so that we can decide!

  1. I think senator Obama is correct that another hour or two of televised trivial nit-picking doesn't relate to the issues facing America. Unfortunately it's how the political process works at this time. There is no statesmanlike exchange of competing views, it's a Beavis and Butthead world of "does Rev. Wright love America as much as you do?" and "where's your flag pin"? What do you expect after "Freedom Fries"?

I think he's an amazingly inspiring man and I hope he's the democratic choice and goes all the way to the white house. I pity him the milieu in which he is forced to operate. That's one of the things he wants to change. I'm all for it.

So called charisma doesn't come with attributes needed to run this country. His facade is admirable but he's a weak, weak man and will run from any serious problems just like a rat. He should invest in more teleprompters. C'mon people, you mean to tell me that you can't see him stuttering and himhawing around when asked about any important issues, unless, of course, he has his teleprompter handy to tell him what to say. Who is that guy anyway? You know, the one that actually answers the questions. He probably should be running, he's quick and cunning. And I'll give Obama credit for being pretty slick about how he looks down while he's stuttering, sure has his supports fooled. Wake up you bunch of smucks.
