Clinton praises British PM for skipping opening ceremonies at Beijing games

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 9, 2008 04:52 PM

Hillary Clinton, reacting to the British prime minister announcing he will bypass the opening ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics, called today on her presidential rivals to join her in urging President Bush to do the same.

"I wanted to commend Prime Minister Gordon Brown for agreeing not to go to the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Beijing," she said at the Irish American Forum this afternoon in New York. "That was an important decision by Prime Minister Brown and I am calling on Senators McCain and Obama to join me in my request that President Bush also not attend the opening ceremonies."

Clinton said earlier this week the president should boycott the ceremonies to register discontent with China's actions in Tibet and Darfur. Neither John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, nor Democratic competitor Barack Obama have followed suit.

ABC is reporting that Obama could be conflicted on the issue because his home city of Chicago is bidding for the 2016 Summer Olympics and because a senior adviser is involved in that bid.

  1. Unfortunately the Olympics always ends up having Politics involved, w/ is a shame & is tantamount to what it is supposed to be about, however, I blame the Olympic Committee for approving China as the Host Country for this year's meet. They knew that this could be expected. China has long been known for it's policies against Human Rights. We could hope that the magnification of World-wide attention on China as the Summer Olympics approach could persuade China to take steps forward in Human Rights. Maybe it will.
U.S. Corporations don't seem to care about the atrocities either, their only concern is Cheap, Forced Labor that keeps their profit margins high.
I see where George Bush is 'requesting" that the Chinese Government hold discussions with the Dalai Lama. We'll have to see how China responds, although I don't trust the Chinese Government anymore than I trust Bush or Cheney. George Bush needs to do what's right to hold China accountable for it's record on Human Rights. He used it as one of the excuses to topple Saddam Hussein.

  1. I didn't really have an opinion, until HRC pulled this garbage. Honestly, she cannot influence her own husband, why should she be the boss of her rivals? Why should she be the boss of a sitting president? Hillary, SHUT UP!
