Clinton speaks on Wright controversy

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 30, 2008 03:27 PM

Hillary Clinton is using the platform of "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox News Network to weigh in on Barack Obama's disavowal of his former pastor.

In an interview to air tonight, Bill O'Reilly egged Clinton on, asking, "Can you believe this guy?"

At first, she says she'll allow voters to decide on the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.

But then she allows that she found the recent round of comments from Wright "offensive and outrageous."

"It's part of an atmosphere we're in today," shs says.

Clinton also says that Obama had to make his views clear Tuesday -- "finally" -- that he categorically denounces Wright's comments. She also repeated previous statements that she would not have stayed in her church if her pastor had made similar remarks attacking the US government and ascribing some blame on US policies abroad for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

  1. PA was Hillary's last hurrah! She is spent , no more venom. Here comes the Sun, Obama who even looks like the image of Jesus on the shroud of Turin. Obama's call for unity is in his genes. All enlightened believers in the coming of the bleached messiah, who watch FOX and believe in O'Rilley must know that if you don't vote for Obama you will be stuck with Carl Rove in purgatory and may not see the paradise.

  1. This woman, the one upstairs pretending not to know that her husband was having sex with that woman downstairs, is an abysmal piece of work.
She has no honor, integrity, or sincerity to call on in her dark political hour.
She is from the same spore as is Karl Rove.
I have decided that I can not vote for her even if she is the nominee of my party. That saddens me but is a moral position that I must hold to.

  1. As of this morning:
Oil prices, $115/barrel, two soldiers died in Iraq Tuesday, Home foreclosures are at an all time high; Oil companies posted record profits (again); Regular gas in this city $3.79/gal. Health care is in crisis, jobs are being shipped out daily.
The Republican/McCain/Clinton response? Smear ads featuring Barack Obama and his former pastor.
A gas tax "holiday" which may save $20 this summer season; but may bankrupt the funds responsible for our infrastructure. A health care plan which is essentially the Bush plan. (McCain). In other words, no plan. Support of policies that have lead to the economic crisis and job losses we currently are in with China, Mexico, Colombia, and India (Clinton's NAFTA, CAFTA, China trade deals "Most Favored Nation Status"; McCain's endorsement of this plan.)
McCain's 100 year war and the not so veiled insistence that we attack Iran. Clinton's pledge to the oil sheiks of Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates that she would "obliterate Iran" with nuclear force if they were attacked.
Economy: McCain's campaign was nearly bankrupt until he "lent" himself $4 million dollars violating campaign finance laws. Clinton's "formidable" campaign, based on experience, has truly been bankrupt of money or ideas. Bills to small business owners in Ohio and Texas not being paid. Her employees' OWN health care not being paid.

Given the above issues that are facing this country, paired with the Clinton/McCain responses, or lack thereof, are THE reason the debate for the presidency keeps being focused on smear tactics and innuendo.
Neither Clinton nor McCain truly give a rat's arse about the American citizens who are truly suffering; the "blue collar" worker, the soldiers, the veterans, or anyone else. If they or their supporters truly cared, the issues would be paramount in their campaigns.
Posters on this site who routinely try to smear Obama with non issues; I've got a question for you. At the end of the day, when you've scored your various "gotcha" points of "Rezko, Wright, Ayers, Muslim, terrorist, boogeyman", do you honestly feel better about yourself and your campaign? Are any of the above smear points going to lower the price of gas? Bring our troops home? Save your house or job? Provide health care for your family?
Or are you going to continue to support candidates like Bush/McCain/Clinton, who will tell you what you want to hear, all the while enriching themselves while selling out the country. You supporters who are so virulent, and would never support Obama under any circumstances, Is Clinton sharing her moneymaking secrets ($109 million) with you? What about McCain?
No, you will vote on hot button wedge issues like before, and get screwed again. They will be laughing all the way to the bank.

If for once, you can get by your biases, (racial, sexual, philosophical or other), and vote for your best interests, I'm confident that you will choose Obama.
Bottom line: do you want to do better the next four years than you have the last seven? The last 15? The last 20?

  1. Hey,
I am a lady who was born and growth up in Africa. And I was thought your moral reflect your parents, your grandparents and your pastors. I was so excided to know that a black man name Obama was running to become a President of America and his father was from Africa.
This makes me went and register to vote for the frist time since I became a U.S.citizen. I think I am going to vote for Hillary, because of all that came out from his pastor's mouth. It make me sick and I can not get that image away from my mine.

I really like Obama but I can't stand his mentor (the pastor).

  1. When are the political junkies going to grow up and act like adults rather than 12-year-old children in a finger-pointing debate? Rev. Wright can say anything he wants to say and it does not require either and endorsement or repudiation from candidate Obama. It really doesn't require an accounting from Senator Obama about "when he knew and what he knew..." That's all witch-hunt talk. Boogie-man politics.

Thirty years ago everybody wanted to attack Jimmy Carter for the actions and statements made by his brother Billy Carter. And you know something, it really didn't matter one iota what Billy Carter said or did. Aren't we all adults here? I doesn't seem like the national media is capable of acting like anything more than small minded idiots.

  1. When her husband was in the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal impeachment trial headache, they invited this same Rev. Wright to a breakfast prayer meeting at the White House to pray for them over the husband’s sexual moral sins!!! Rev Wright was making controversial statements at that time also.

  1. I HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT IT WAS SOMEONE FROM HILARY'S/BILLS INNER CIRCLE THAT LEAKED THE REVERAND WRIGHT SERMONS TO THE PRESS. I ALSO BELIEVE THESE SAME PEOPLE CONVINCED THE REVERAND TO SEEK AIR TIME TO DEFEND HIMSELF AND THROW SENATOR OBAMA TO THE WOLVES.

KNOWING HOW THE CLINTONS OPERATE THIS REALLY MAKES SENSE. I HOPE THAT REVERAND WRIGHT WILL COME FORWARD AND SAY WHO PUT HIM UP TO TRYING TO DESTROY HIS FRIEND OF 20 YEARS.

IF HILARY GETS THE NOMINATION I WILL SPLIT WITH MY PARTY AND WORK FOR JOHN McCAIN.

  1. This has got to be satire. A presidential nominee on tv addressing her very important personal opinions about a retired pastor from Chicago!!!!

I love the way she plays it. Just like when they said to her that, ya know, some folks think Obama's a Muslim. Instead of saying that's ridiculous or "so what", she says".. yes I understand a lot of people have that opinion. "

She's a fighter all right, but hasn't got the guts or dignity to pass up any chance to play on ignorance or prejudice if it means a couple of votes. If people are offended, she says, then I must articulate how offended they are. Seems like the
giving away highway repair tax idea must be losing steam so lets get back to Reverened Wright. tax

  1. All I know is Obama said he never heard such words, then he says he did hear the Reverand say offensive things in his so-called race speech, then he now says the Reverand is not the Reverand he knew 20 years ago….All lies. Now, so that he may gain the highest position in the land - he denouces the words completely. Too late Obama.
You sat in a church for 20 years but didn’t know what this man was about, yet you went to the million dollar march with him to participate in a racist dialogue and racist movement…….
During the announcement of his presidential campaign he prayed with his pastor in the basement minutes beforehand.
The American People are not as stupid as you would like us to believe. Even the pastor on Greta last night said that Wrights preaching over the last few days was his typical performance throughout his career…..yet Obama claims it wasn’t.
At least Wright has the guts to say what he thinks. Obama just lies and lies, like about not meeting in Canada about NAFTA, then we found out he did, like that Rezko gave 35,000, and then we found out he gave 350,000. The only thing Obama is good at is lying and convincing a bunch of people to believe him.

  1. I think it's really too sad and too bad that Obama has been pressured to disown his pastor. This whole controversy just highlights the fact that white people really don't understand the black experience in America and probably never will. As a white woman, I wasn't all that shocked by anything that the Rev. Wright said : I've heard it all before, many times and for many years. This is a Shame.

  1. I haven't seen a pollitician as dirty as Obama since Nixon. He has lied about every important issue. Leaving Iraq immediately, going to Canada to negate his comments about NAFTA, fund raising with Resko, buying his house with Resko and his connection to Wright. Obama is a disgrace and should stop stirring up racial tensions in this country to cover his own lies. I would not vote for this man no matter who the republicans ran. I will vote republican for the first time in 35 years.

  1. Walt, your post (#3) was the most thoughtful one I've read on this site over the last week or so. Really makes you stop and think. Why would we want to elect anyone else besides Obama?

He is unelectable. Americans will not elect a racist, elite for President.

  1. Rev. Wright's performance at the Press Club was organized by Rev. Dr. Barbara Reynolds, who has taught Communication at more than one prestigious university.
    Salient facts:

    1. Reynolds voted for Clinton in the Maryland primary.

    2. Wright's eye-rolling, jibbering mistrel-style performance was carefully crafted to scare the bejesus out of white voters, whether Wright was conscious of his motivation or not.

    3. Farrakhan's men did security, and were in the background of every shot that went out. Reynolds had to know about this, and approve of it.

    4. Reynolds says on her blog that she is ambivalent about Obama because
the white establishment will just kill him off, anyway. She returns to this theme several times in her blog, even quoting the Bible to justify it.

    5. Reynold's books are about her recovery from multiple addictions, and an abusive relationship. She isn't crazy about men, especially Black men.

    6. Wright comes across as narcissistic, unstable and downright pathological. Sadly, it really does raise questions about Obama's judgment. His enemies knew this would hurt him like nothing else, because Obama mistakenly trusted White, looking up to him as a father-figure--and Obama needed a father so badly that he didn't allow himself to see the hate inside the older man.

    7. Both the New York Times and Disney-owned ABC have turned against Obama, and Fox and AM Hate Radio have always hated him. Think about it--this is the first serious candidate for President who won't accept money from lobbyists and the corporate upper class. They have no control over him. Can you imagine how nervous this makes them?

    8. The worst thing about Wright's world-view is not that it is anti-establishment, but that he is focused on victim status. This gets in the way of any meaningful social, emotional and economic growth.

    9. Wright demostrated that he would gladly sacrifice the best opportunity to change things for Black kids--yes, and for white kids too--that has come along in 40 years, maybe a hundred.

    Why would Wright do this?

Because Wright, like many "leaders" who are essentially performers, is a narcissist. He mentered somebody who learned how to think for himself. Obama grew up and got rid of his sterile, victim-centered worldview.

Wright can't handle it, and will do anything to get even.

I pray for Michelle and Barack Obama. Guys, we love you no matter what.
This is an American tragedy on an epic scale.

  1. Warning: Jonathan's posting is full of half truths and is misleading.
EX: Obama never met in Canada about NAFTA. Someone linked to his campaign did. In the case of Hillary, one of her campaign managers was lobbying for Columbia on trade while she was pretending publicly to be against it.
In reality, I'll not expect any politician not to stretch the truth at times. Now, it's the extent of the lies that scares me. Inventing a whole event such as "landing under sniper fire, running to the cars", "negotiating peace for Ireland" (the people who actually did and got Nobel prizes for it don't remember meeting with her), that's scary.

  1. Clinton and McCain are cut from the same cloth. Clinton is a spoiler in the race, a race the establishment desperately needs Obama to lose.

If the American electorate falls for this idiocy, god help you all.

  1. The term "extremist" is often used with reference to those who use or advocate "violence" against the will of "society at large", but it is also used by some to describe those who advocate or use "violence" to enforce the will of the social body, such as a government or majority constituency.

The act of labeling a person, group or action as "extremist" is sometimes claimed to be a technique to further a political goal — especially by governments seeking to defend the status quo, or "political centrists". In any event, the term "extremist" — like the word "violence" — cannot be regarded as "value-neutral".

Clinton campaign has trying to portrait Senator Obama as an extremist, Senator obama does not advocate or uses violence to enforce the will ofcitizen.

however this political technique or strategy sure benefits the media to the price of loss of votes for senator OBAMA

  1. Judge Obama by his own actions and words - not the actions of the people has associated with. Have we heard one person step forward and say that Obama personally did him/her wrong? No. Have we heard one person step forward and say that they ever heard hateful words come from Obama's mouth? No. Have we heard one person step forward from all of the contacts he has had his entire life - and say anything negative at all about him regarding his honesty, reliability, or strength of character? We have not. These stories would have come to the forefront by now if such injured parties exist, but they do not. Please, Pru and others, think about this carefully. Do not pass up this opportunity to have an amazing president.

  1. First she says, "I'll let the voters decide". Then, in a two-faced, listen to me, this is what you think sort of way, she says, "I wouldn't have stayed" and "finally"....prodding people to shake their heads in agreement, with O'fucktard'Reilly egging her on. Faux News and the Clintons are part of the same parcel. They both need to be thrown under the 747. Leave the bus at home.

  1. I think that this sorry circus has tested Obama and he has passed. His racism speech was a carefully crafted act of genuine statesmanship and he has separated himself from Reverend Wright with class. He clearly let the nation know where he stood.

When Wright decided to exploit the podium that the avaricious press had afforded him, Barack upgraded the language of his separation from polite to very decisive. I think (or at least hope) that he has the intelligence and imagination to function well in the international arena where racial, religious and cultural conflict are everyday facts of life.
