Clinton stays on policy, says she's nice
By Susan Milligan, Globe Staff
HAVERFORD, Pa. -- While Barack Obama slammed his rival for attacking him in Wednesday night's debate, Hillary Clinton sought today to convince voters she is likable, sparing Obama from harsh rhetoric and jokingly noting that she's nicer than some people seem to think.
"Just knock on the door and say, 'You know, she's real-lllly nice,' '' Clinton quipped to a male college student who asked how he could help her win Pennsylvania's primary on Tuesday. "Or you can say it another way: 'She's not as bad as you think,' '' Clinton added, drawing chuckles from an invitation-only crowd at Haverford College.
Clinton, looking upbeat ahead of a primary supporters in both campaigns believe she must win -- perhaps handily -- to stay competitive for the nomination, kept her comments to straight policy talk, telling the Haverford crowd of her plans to give tax credits to people caring for sick family members.
Reinforcing her appeal to working-class voters, a key part of her Pennsylvania base, Clinton also reiterated her promise to enforce equal pay laws and to guarantee at least seven days of sick time for workers. She appeared together with her daughter Chelsea and mother Dorothy Rodham for one of the few times this campaign to highlight issues for the "sandwich generation" facing the demands of parents and children.
Clinton has been dogged by polls showing that a higher percentage of voters have a negative impression of her than they did at the beginning of the campaign, and six out of ten, according to an ABC-Washington Post poll this week, find her untrustworthy. And while Clinton attacked Obama's integrity at the debate on Wednesday, she pulled back yesterday, focusing on her own legislative work.
Clinton mentioned her work with GOP colleagues in the Senate, and even deflected a chance to criticize the presumptive Republican nominee, Arizona Senator John McCain, on the issue of global warming.
"I've actually worked with Senator McCain on this issue,'' Clinton said. "I commend [McCain] for breaking ranks with the Republicans to even talk about this issue.''

She is most certainly not nice.
The woman should be nominated for an Academy Award for best actress.
My......isn't her head swelling with ego........Looks like a deceitful "rattler" to me!
She's Real-llly Phony, oh and an Old School Washington Liar. However, I think the poll for her negative ratings were wrong. The numbers should have been higher.
Catholic Voters Against Washinton Liars!
Obama spells doom for this country. Not only because of his dubious affiliations with mob members like Rezko and criminals like Auchi, but because of his lack of experience and bias education especially his bizarre religious affiliations. He is like silly putty; able to change his ideas for the public as needed so as to achieve his goal as supreme leader.
His intentions are unclear, but his affiliations are clear. Being surrounded with people like the violent Ayers, or the Hiteresque Wright, or his American hating wife Michelle, or his Kenyan half brother Islamic Jihad terrorist Abongo “Roy” Obama, or his Jewish/Israeli hating best friend Rashid Khalidi, or his close advisor Robert Malley who advocates supporting and helping the terrorist group Hamas, or Mr. McPeaks, Obama’s military advisor who open believes American Jews are the "problem." and “Christian Zionists were driving America's policy in Iraq to benefit Israel,” or Obama’s super delegate and major long term supporter Senator Meeks who openly hates and distrust all whites and gays or Obama’s most dangerous affiliation to Mr. Auchi who was Saddam Hussein right hand man and made billions in Iraq and has been a important supporter and behind the scene man throughout Obama’s rise to power.
And besides all this questionable laundry in Obama’s life, another serious question is why is Obama protected and promoted by the media? Is this also being directed from behind the scenes? The American public has been fooled before and I guess those in power know we can be fooled again. (Kennedy’s assassination, Martin Luther King’s assassination, the invasion of Iraq…).
The fact that Obama has made it this far demonstrates the collective lack of discriminative intelligence and education of this country. And nothing demonstrates this better than how well Obama plays his black card; which plays on our fear of being labeled a racist.
Oh, right. Because you know her? You know what you read and you choose what to believe. She may not be nice...but to say she "is most certainly" not nice is indicative of what a silly sheep you are.
You don't know her. She is. Nice to see you're part of the blind America that has fallen into the media misrepresentation that is Obama.
I for one will rely on what I actually observe about Ms. Hillary's character, rather than her own characterizations of herself. Observations of how she actually behaves are much more reliable than her (even joking) self-assessment.
According to many who have worked with Obama and his wife over the years, they aren't too nice either...
Just cause she says it, doesn't make it true...
Actions speak louder than words, Hillary. You loooove to beef, and it shows. Today's nice is just pretend, cause you know you piled on. You and the moderators overdid it last night. It's gonna backfire.
Somebody dared to ask lil boy hard questions. He is the fake and must drop out.
She is not only nice, but smart, capable, strong, trustworthy, experienced, funny, caring, loving, devoted, tough, and . . .the next president of the United States, if voters have the brains to elect her!
Nice is NOT a word that you can associate with Hillary.
Denial is not nice. Hypocrisy is not nice. Greed and manipulation are not nice. Distortion and verbal abuse are not nice. Dissembling and pretending and making excuses are not nice. Blind ambition is not nice.
Machiavelli didn't even pretend that nice was a value. But, he did expect that effectiveness and competence were values.
So here's this Machiavellian woman who doesn't want to admit it to herself, cannot do it well enough so that it doesn't hurt her more than the person she attacks, and then wants to pretend it's not happening.
Huh?
Clinton is revealing striking character flaws that make her elevation to the presidency unwise, if not dangerous. I don't think we've seen this level of self involved need for control and narcissism, since Nixon. In some respects she's a good match to Bill's folksy self indulgence.
One day, a little girl awakened & found herself fatherless. She rubbed her eyes & saw her family villa destroyed — even the old adobe barn that bore a target her father painted when he taught her how to shoot.
For years after (disguising herself as a boy so men would not gang up on her), the poor girl trekked through many lands of all the continents — over mighty mountains & up Antarctic heights & through vast & arid salt-troughs & deep beneath the crusts of frozen seas (a mighty feat, since she tended to float) & across the great Sahara (& other deserts, like Washington DC) & around-and-about the half-timber houses & cobbled ways of Hornburg, Eisenach, Strasbourg, Warwick, and Rouen & into the gridworks of Manhattan's canyoned streets & the midnight of late June's Iceland lighted by a sun bright as pre-twilight's. Even did she brave the shell-strafed airports of Bosnia & Ulster...
Then one night — after downing a shot of rye & a beer pint chaser (for she was a real man's boy, a boy of the real folk) — she started to weep. “Where is father? Where is home?" She fainted & fell unconscious to the old village tavern's sawdust-covered floor.
When she woke she stood beneath a clearest sky above the clouds & peered into the vision of a great gold gate mammothing before her. Behind the gate sat a tallish gaunt man whose beard was untrimmed & mousey brown & who wore just a loincloth.
The little girl (still little despite her 59 years & still disguised as a boy) — the wee girl approached the gate & put her nose between two bars, so her eyes could be closest to the man seated inside. "Father?" the girl pleaded with cracking voice, cracking so it sounded like a near-pubescent boy's.
The tallish, gaunt, untrimmed-bearded, loin-cloth-wearing man rose & leaned forward slowly & hopefully, his face nearing the nose of the 59-year-old girl posing as a boy. "Pinocchio?" the gaunt, tallish, untrimmed-bearded, loin-cloth-wearing man inquired with a whisper.
Nice is a not an adjective that comes to mind when talking about HRC, and saying it's so will never make it so....
Hillary Clinton Nice! Ya gotta be be jokin. I see her as a pretententious, condescending, power hungry woman, who'll attack anyone who gets in her way.
she is not only really nice but intelligent, and a fighter. I am proud of her staying in the race even though the comptition is tough
Clinton constantly speaks glowingly of John McCain and has gleefully employed the gutter tactics she says the GOP will use in the Fall. Who's side is she on? Perhaps she's hedging her bets: she finally realizes that the Tonya Harding option is not going to deliver her the nomination, so her best alternative is a VP slot; she's burnt that bridge with Barack, so maybe she can forge a McCain/Clinton ticket...
Are we to assume that when you personally met her, she was not nice? We aren't voting for nice we are voting for experienced, competent for President. Not nice.
Well, she may be nice, but she's also VERY dishonest. And this is nothing new, just exaggeration and "misspeaking" in the heat of a presidential race. In fact, in 1996 NYT journalist, Willia Safire, a one-time supporter of Bill Clinton noted, at the time of the travel office scandal (aka Travelgate), that Mrs. Clinton was a "congenital liar." She hasn't changed in 12 years, and it is doubtful that becoming President would endow her with any morals - it didn't do much for her husband's morals - did it?
Hillary should be next president. YES SHE CAN
She has a capacity for forgiveness that this country needs. We need to forgive each other.
She's a fucking lying bitch and the sum far left news media knows it and that is they love hitlery clinton
If you think Hillary is nice you didn't see her disgusting behaviour in the last debate.
Hillary and Billary can be called a lot of things, but nice is not a word they know. They have and will continue to do anything for POWER! They have their own history of trash to deal with...trash Americans don't need in Washington.
One thing is for sure....all of this is helping one person....McCain.
Hillary Clinton - It's not that you're a terrible politician ... it's just that you're a typical politician. America needs to be moving beyond 20th century Rovian politics... and that's all Clinton knows how to play.
To comment #1 : Why? Pray tell. And by the way, pls state the facts, not assumptions.
I agree with you. The only nice thing about her is that when snipers were firing she went to Bosnia without caring for her own safety. She is a person who does not insult the intelligence of the American voters and who does not lie pathologically.
when will hllbill disappear from voters lives. She like a bad dream that keeps coming back. I watched the debate and Obama clearly won. ABC and the moderators should be fined for the circus thay allowed to go on. Barack was correct when he said when will they finally debate the real issues not moderators fantasy's.
Watch Obama's comment for a real laughter!

Yes in fact she is nice. She's worked all her life helping other people.
She's smart and kind.
Unfortunately, there is sexism in this country. And that is why many people say mean things about her.
On a scale of 1 being nice and 10 being hitler, I see her at about a grizzly bear. Which is to say, she may leave you alone if she's in a good mood, but if you get in her or she needs something, LOOK OUT!
I will never understand how that woman doesn't get struck by lightening when she talks. Nice? She's the most NOT nice person I've ever seen and that includes Dick Cheney who at least cares about his party!
She is most certainly not likable.
Maybe if she could understand how dissatisfied I am with the way things are run and if she had some actual empathy with people under the age of 40 who have huge student loan debts and absolutely nothing but stagnated wages facing them and a job in the service industry and she tried to understand just how freaking BITTER I am with this country and my government that elected Bush not once but TWICE I would think she was a nice lady.
Maybe if she gave me some of that cold hard cash she's gonna pass down to her daughter.
Maybe if she'd just drop out already.
But no. She just doesn't want to be likable.
no, she is not. just do a google search on "hillary clinton secret service"
Now THERE is a campaign slogan for the ages: "She's not as bad as you think." That's like the McCain slogan, "He's not as old and out of touch as you think."
Hillary is nice - but she's also a fighter, and we need a fighter. After last night's debate, the only one that Barack Obama was put on the spot and had to defend himself, he is out there today complaining about Hillary. She has been through the media and press criticsms daily and nightly , and through all the 21 debates as the heavy - even though all that time she was the underdog. C'mon Barack, cool it. Toughen up and lighten up - consider last night a practice round. If you win the nomination, you'll need to get used to it. Hillary and her baggage have been through it all, that's one reason why I think she would be better in the general election - she fights back, and doesn't worry too much about being "nice".
Hillary once questioned herself in her memoirs, 'Is it possible for one to be a compassionate misanthrope...' She is definately likable, if not for her ruthless political savy, if not for her staying married to a revered former President who also happens to be a confirmed womanizer, and if not for her outright, bolden lies she speaks from time to time, Hillary Clinton is a very likable politician, more seasoned than Obama, much better on the eyes than John McBush. Our two-party system seems to melting into one. Did Karl Marx have it correct when he stated that a capitalistic society will more or less eat itself? It seems the dems, the g.o.p., and the willing, blood-thirsty media are playing out this scenerio of man eat man, on the terms of power, avarice, and egotism, without regard to a suffering population. There is no difference, we need a revolution.
Hillary Clinton is nice. Why do people get upset that hard questions are asked. We are voting for President not a Little League Coach. I certainly want to know all about the person I am voting for. Are we supposed to hide anything that could be damaging. I want to find out now rather than later. I know all about the Clintons as they have been torn apart by the Republlicans and Media for years. I don't know much about Obama. What I do know is that Hillary Clinton has the answers and ability to fight to get things done! I want her as my President
Let's face it: she's selfish and power-hungry. She'll stop at nothing to get power. She lied 3 different times and called them one "misspeak," instead of owning up to it. She's up to her ears in scandals from the 1980s onward, and Obama never speaks about them- I wish he would. He even tried to defend her on the Bosnia issue last night.
An older person, a wise woman, told me once that the worst thing you could ever say about anyone is that they are"nice" Therefore Hillary is "nice" as she claims to tell everyone for their votes. Is that what Americans WANT in this election ...a "nice" President ?? Why I've never heard of such silliness ....but that's politics,eh.
Didn't she try that in Iowa? Even taking a likeability tour and dragging her mom, her daughter, and friends of New York and Arkansas? She came in THIRD in Iowa. So, Hillary, you can try to convince everyone you are "nice"....we all know differently, and like Iowa did not buy into your likeability persona (VERY FAKE), neither will the rest of us. Hilliary, you are 60 years old, have you not learned that you CANNOT FORCE PEOPLE TO LIKE YOU??? Seems like you have had a major problem with not being liked from the time you were child. You are only making a complete jackass of yourself. It is in stone; the majority of Americans does NOT like you, period. Give it up,
I do not doubt Hillary's capability as to the ability to handle herself with other deceitful personalities around the world, but a serious question that I have to the Clintonistas is why would you as a group, gravitate to someone who has such a shady history that is undeniable, not to mention that if you on your own, research her past (readily available via internet) you can determine that she is not an honest and forthright person.......
In short, I am asking is "Why do You, her supporters, Like Her......ie what is she doing or done for You to like her?" I ask this question Because I would like for you to change my perspective of her.
I Like Obama because he does represent "Change" and does not make me feel like I am being condecended to!.........I too, like for the hard questions to be asked of him and it would be fair also for the press to extensively go into Hillary's and Obama's backgrounds. Hillary's just happens to be longer and darker.
She would eat her young to be President.
