Democrats press McCain on North Carolina ad
The Democratic National Committee is trying today to step up the pressure on John McCain to stop North Carolina Republicans from airing an ad about Barack Obama and his former pastor.
McCain on Wednesday urged the North Carolina GOP not to air what he described as a degrading ad, but the state party said it plans to start the spot on Monday, declaring that it is a local matter since it actually criticizes two Democratic candidates for governor for endorsing Obama.
But the DNC said today that McCain isn't doing enough, especially since Republican leaders in North Carolina have ties to his campaign. Other critics have said the presumptive Republican nominee is trying to have it both ways -- issuing a high-minded denunciation, but also benefitting from the attack on Obama.
"This is a test of leadership for John McCain," DNC Chairman Howard Dean said in a statement today." If he can't pick up the phone and make members of his own party stop airing a television ad he claims to oppose, how can he lead our country through an economic crisis or the war in Iraq? After shifting his positions on gun control, immigration and tax cuts throughout this campaign, McCain should not equivocate on this issue. Making a show of releasing your emails to the press is not leadership. If he is serious, he will get this ad pulled."
UPDATE: Mike Duncan, chairman of the Republican National Committee, issued a statement in response:
"Both Senator McCain and the RNC have been very clear about running a respectful campaign based on the issues. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Howard Dean. The DNC chairman has consistently attacked Sen. McCain's integrity and character, even his military service. It is absolutely laughable that Howard Dean would call on anyone to denounce anything considering the pattern of outrageous and personal attacks he has leveled at McCain and Republicans. If anything, Senators Obama and Clinton should immediately stand up and repudiate the coarse and inappropriate actions of their party chairman."
UPDATE: Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan weighed in: "The fact that Senator McCain can't get his own party to take down this misleading, personal attack ad raises serious questions about his promise to the American people that he will run a civil, respectful campaign."

Don't hold your breath
Funny that the DNC is attempting to intervene while Hillary Clinton remains silent on the matter. As a Democratic voter, I am so thankful that this campaign has revealed her true nature.
DNC and its Chairman Howard Dean are responsible for all this. They could have prevented all this several weeks ago. By kowtowing to the Clintons's continued campaign and negatives ads, they have invited their true enemies to cash in. The DNC and Howard Dean said nothing when the Clintons were exploiting the same ads. The damage has been done. It is too late. How long has Obama been athe front-runner? Jeez!
This is just ludicrous. If Mr. Wright's view becomes Obama's view according to Republicans, then we should call Mr. Cheny as gay or lesbian or he endorses that view because he assciates with his daughter. Isn't it ture?
Also, John McCain is loving this--on one side he is asking them to stop after the insult. He is NOT as honest he seems to protrait.
What How about we tell the poeple about Obama's elitest comments to the elites in California. Obama is getting tired, and when people are tired they say the truth, and when the truth about the Democrats candidates gets out people will realize that having a weak, lying elitest commander in chief is not good for our country, and economy.
The comments by Jeremiah Wright regarding the damnation of America have been almost universally misunderstood. What disturbs most people, apparently, is the suggestion, as forcefully put forth by Mr. Wright, that actions have consequences. This is not just a case of some unpatriotic rant. To believe that is to conveniently skip over the possibility that Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, Secret Prisons, and citizen wiretapping might, just might have consequences. If we think everything we do is a blessing unto the world, that we can torture people and be thought of, by them, as angels of mercy, then Reverend Wright's fervor accurately evokes the level of the insult to spiritual laws that, apparently, so many outraged patriots believe do not exist. Can we, for instance, hurt people badly and be able to count on them seeing us as angels? Can we murder a mother's child and have her love us unconditionally? It isn't surprising that the Press is so challenged ethically and spiritually they are blind to ethical fervor. It is surprising that so many conservative Christians have a problem with God punishing their sins.
So silly. It's the silly season. If the media hadn't kept the lid on these stories (Wright, Rezko, Auchi, Ayes, Dohrn et al) for so long, perhaps the energy of the stories would have calmed down by now. By coddling Obama, the media did him a disservice, lulled him into thinking he would be beloved in every corner of the land. Get over it. This stuff was known in Chicago. Written up in depth for over a year n the Sun Times and the Trib. Not picked up by the National Media until some bloggers started to pry the lid off and copy links to the stories into comment areas of the NY Times, ABC, here and everywhere. Why protect a candidate to this extent? Will the President of Syria bend over backwards to make a "President" Obama look good? Will Russia's Putin look into a "President" Obama's eyes and declare he's in love? Get real, get tough, and stop the wha wha pseudo righteous whining. This is politics, not a tea dance.
Let's call Mr. Cheny a gay man----because he associated himself with his lesbian daughter. What's the difference? If Wright's view seems to be bama's view, then Cheny's view must be her daughter's view. Right?
Just dispicable---
The Democrats are idiots for having a candidate with such an unvetted shady background. It's goona be too easy for the Republicans to make middle America "afraid" of Obama. I hate to say it, but Rove is just licking his chops.
DNC owned by Clintons; no surprise. For McCain, if GOP running the ads, he is just talk and word .. not walking his talk and has no leadership at all. If he can't control and lead GOP, his own party, then the question how will he lead the national and world?
I give obama a lot of credits for running his campaign against Clintons machine, McCain, GOP and Media bias. Of course this country is not ready for Black President and Americans are in denial stage when facing the true - discrimination - Don't go to the world and condemn other countries of human right, discrimination, racism, inequality, etc. Clean America first.
The Wright thing came from Hillary / Clintons machine. She has a lot of issues and bagges, but the media hid them; e.g. Mark Penn, NAFTA, etc.
Obama is right when he said the "bitter" thing .. wait until people have to go food ration, e.g. allow to buy one gallon of milk, one bag of sugar, one bag of rice, two gallon of gas, etc.. then they will understand the "bitter" comment.
Older generation are selfish generation, they don't think about the next generation, they don't want to change they are comfortable with Clintons and the past. Things change as time moves on. America is moving backward and China & India are invading USA market both, products and jobs.
No, it isn't "ture." It isn't even true. Following a spiritual mentor for over 20 years, having him marry you, baptize you, etc. isn't the same has having a positive relationship with your gay child (if you don't support gay philosophy). Get real, Obama supporters, or you can't survive in this tough political world. The reason why Obama disinvited Wright from his announcement for the presidency is because Obama knew more than anyone else that this connection was bad news for him politically. Wright himself acknowledged that Obama would have to "distance" himself from Wright. You can't compare that to a father and daughter. Stop being silly and get real. This is politics, not a sandbox of kids who don't pee.
What about Rezko? What about Saddam Hussein's friend Auchi? What about Ayers and Dohrn, murderers who get to teach college courses? Get real. This group of "associates" does not show sound judgement and is fodder for t.v. ads. You'll be seeing many more; the material seems to be endless.
Reverend Wright's views are Obama's view, because supposedly he is Obama's spiritual advisor. How can your personal views be so different than your spiritual advisor's. Something does not add up here, so the ad is fair game. Secondly, it is not McCain's problem if somebody wants to run an ad like this. It's free speach. If they look stupid doing it, so be it.
Howard Dean is full of crap. Both he and the DNC would go to any length to protect the public from knowing about Obama's relationships. His list of anti-American associates seems to be long and extensive and they are doing everything they can to prevent us from looking to deep. John McCain ask that the ad not be run and NC decided they would run it anyway which has no baring on his leadership abilities. Given his past it is quit clear he has all of the leadership qualities you could ever ask of an American. Howard Dean should focus on that circus the DNC has running with no apparent leader.
It seems Obama is so ashamed of his associates that even the mention of his cronies’ evokes cries of foul play from all of the liberal loons.
Yes, that 's probably true. We have had a weak, lying elitist commander in chief for eight years now, and look how he has screwed up everything.
Republicans, don't have nothing to say about how to fix our country, so just know how go negative, and personal, get real. This time they wiil loose

WHAT A BUNCH OF LYING HYPOCRITES.
HAVE W EVER HAD A COMMANDER IN CHIEF WHO WAS NOT A LYING ELITIST?
What people should be asking, but aren't: Why is the NC Republican Party trying to influence the Democrat primary?
"Weak, lying elitest commander in chief is not good for our country, and economy."
Like, George W Bush?
Obama goes to Wright's church for so many years and then says that he doesn't agree with Wright's statements. Then NC republicans put out an ad. Then McCain says he doesn't appove, but can't get the ad pulled. How are these two scenarios different????? It shows that they are both experienced politicians. If either of them get into office there will be no change from the norm.
Geez, I guess I'm gonna vote Green or Libertarian. At least when the country goes to hell, I'll have a clear conscience!
I live in NC and I think they should run the ad. Didn't Obama continue to attend Rev. Wright's church? The answer is yes, he did. Obama brought this on himself by continuing to associate with a racist man who gets away with being racist under the guise of being a pastor. If Hillary attended a church led by David Duke and used the same lame excuses Obama did, she would have been excoriated. And yes, I am a democrat. I have already voted in the early voting and I did not vote for Obama.
Here is my suggestion for how Barack Obama should handle the North Carolina smear ad.
He should run an ad telling everyone that this type of distraction is exactly what he was talking about in San Francisco. The Republicans are running an ad, focusing on an issue that may be emotional, but it is not going to help improve the life of the average person. The Republicans are talking about Rev. Wright because they cannot talk about jobs, they cannot talk about the economy, they cannot talk about improving your life or leveling the playing field for the average person. They want you to look at Rev. Wright to distract you from focusing on things that could actually help the average person. They want you to look away from the issues that are so difficult for you to deal with everyday, and look at something that will take your eye off of the ball.
if the DNC is opposed to classless ads they should pull their ad that misrepresents John Mccain's position on the economy and stop making up bogus statistics.

"If he can't pick up the phone and make members of his own party stop airing a television ad he claims to oppose, how can he lead our country through an economic crisis or the war in Iraq?" Good point.
And if Senator Obama can't change his church, how can he change his country?
I agree with the posted by Dr. Jesse Kally-Williams the DNC and Howard Dean sat by and let the Clinton's do the republicans dirty work. And HRC have still remain silent on the matter. I think she has made pac with the republicans HRC is willing to tear up the democratic party if she does not get what she wants.
We've already had a "weak, lying, elitist Commander-in-Chief" for 8 years, and the moron segment of the population still seems to adore him!

So the Dems air ads against McCain saying that he's too old, that he's older than dirty, older than McDonalds & Burger King. And that's supposed to be okay, even though it is irrelevant. But if Republicans air ads against Obama that hit right at the heart of extremely relevant issues like his association with divisive, hateful people, that's somehow supposed to be unethical, mean, and shocking. No wonder I hold Democrats in contempt.
why not air them let the voters know his weakness he sat silent for 20 years listening to that garbage and only when the press revealed did he say he did not agree with those comments sorry Obama 20 years is along time if you really did not agree silence speaks volumes
This is ridiculous. McCain addressed this matter already yesterday and didn't ask them to run this ad- they did it of their own accord. He has shown that he is against this ad being run. It doesn't matter how much "leadership" (or lack thereof) a person has. If the North Carolina GOP wants to run the ad badly enough, no one will stop them .
Certianly we don't need weak, lying elist commander in chief. Much better to have a retarded tough guy who ignores the laws of our country, attacks the wrong country and stays the course while the US reputation is diminished drastically! Long Live President Quayle and Simon Bar Sinister (Darth Vader if you prefer).
The truth is the truth. Even if the ad is removed from tv, it will live on via the internet.
Hopefully Hillary and Barack will keep on slinging everything they can. It will only help the Republican's in November.
This just in: The Dog catcher from Pokipsie said Obama is a poo poo head!
HOW DARE! the McCain people not respond and apologise for him!
If McCain were to speak the truth, then Obama would be expected to speak the truth. Where would we be THEN? I mean, Politicians actually talking truth? Next they would be expected to engage in honest work.
Looks like that elitist Obama is starting his favorite whine...how he's the only one good for America, and change change change. I don't think hate mongering like Obama and Wright do ever does any good. Just look what it did to Germany.
As the old saying goes...."If the heat becomes too much, get out of the kitchen!"
John McCain has control over his campaign staff, but not over the Republican National Committee or other members of the GOP Party. Just as good old Howard Dean can't demand that Hillary or Obama drop out of the race. He can make sure that the rules and regulations of the Democratic Party Platform are being followed.
So while Howard Dean can make suggestions, hint or advise...he cannot demand or command on candidates' ads, personal attacks, etc. Thus, Howard Dean does and should know that John McCain could beg, advise, suggest members of the GOP Party not to run an ad that is deemed too negative. They do not have to take his advice or obey his order.
So, for members and supporters of both Parties....this is only the beginning of a long, close, and potentially heated contest. So, chin up and quit whining!
The ads should run without any interference, they represent the truth, and America needs to hear the truth. Howard Dean and the rest of the Liberals don't like a little of their own medicine do they, well to bad. Mr Obama is a racist elitest, with a Holy than thou attitude. He is out there convincing the the College students, the left wings nuts and the Black community that he will save America. It is total Baloney, he isn't going to change anything expect increase taxes, and make America a bigger target for extremist than it already is. Mrs. Clinton isn't much better.
The American people are going to Vote for McCain, why because of experience, respect and WISDOM most of all. Run those ads all over this country.
Shawn Hannity is channelling Lee Atwater, Rush is a paid Clinton advisor and the Republicans feel threatened as the home for white voters troubled by 'voting for a Black man' as Senator Clinton's campaign closes on the title for the Low-Road-Campaign of the year.
Let's hope President Carter asserts a high tone of moral leadership for the Democratic Party.
I can't believe that there are still people who really give a rat's ass about the three blind mice running for president. Monday, April 28th the truckers protest will begin and that will be only the beginning of the protests that will start when any one of these three imbeciles become president.
John Wyne, did you actually hear the comment? Were you there in California at the event? Have you read the transcriptions of that event, or are you just going off some sound bite you heard on TV?
To everyone, stop watching your crappy lying media outlets spew their market driven filth. Be good Americans and become informed on your decisions. Dont just be a party hack or a sound bite spewing moron. America is a great country because we have the freedom of choice and of dissent, but you can only use these freedoms effectively if you are informed. Go read a damn book!

That defines EVERY elected offical, including Republicans, Democrats and Independents.
Point 2:
The country is better NOW?
The poor DNC and poor , poor Obama! To be called on your actions and questioned on your choice of associates and spiritual mentors - how unfair! You'd think he was running for President, and somehow his character and judgement might really be relevant...what a bunch of whiners!!!! If you can't stand the heat GET OUT OF THE RACE you big BABY!
It's just SAD that the DNC can't come up with any better quality candidates than an elitist racist like Obama, and a congenital liar like Clinton (Both of them). Even sadder that the only other choice is a 70 something guy with the personality of a walnut.
But then, what do I know - according to Mr. Obama, I'm just a "Typical White Person".
Dean is playing on the public's stupidity by saying this is a test of McCain's leadership just b/c McCain doesn't care enough on this issue to flex his muscles on an ad that is dirty but advantageous. Only a fool would equate this ad (which is neutral or positive for McCain) to the economic crisis or Iraq (which are serious & tragic for everyone). And of course McCain loves this - my guess is he's running for president b/c he wants to win. He isn't dishonest for reaping the benefits of Obama's missteps or someone else's ugly ad. He's asked for the ad to be pulled, but he isn't dishonest just because he doesn't make a big fight over this.
Obamabots: This is just the beginning! don't start whining like little girls. It is nothing comapred to what lies ahead. He will never make it to the white house if he is crying foul now. Man-up, you are starting to make Hillary look like the toughest candidate...................which of course she is! If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!
dems need to run attack ads against McCain, also.

Speaking of preachers and ministers of churches, I'm Baptist and when we disagree with a pastor we ask him to leave, if he doesn't, we go out and start another church. That's why you see names of our churches like the 1st Baptist, 2nd Baptist and etc. However you will never see a 11th Baptist church. Why? cause we can't count that high.............Stay Left of Wright Obama and you'll be ok.
Will...you are a typical white person.
Period.
Let's reject this ad by making individual contributions to Obama's campaign on Monday--even a small contribution can be a vote against racism. At my ceramics class this morning (all white women, average age 60) we all agreed we will do so.--Ardelle Cowie, New Haven, CT
Howard Who? Forgive the seeming disrespect, but the presumed republican
nominee, can't boss North Carolina into giving in to the whims of the "other party".
I would say that Howard and the others are sweating at this point, afraid that
if the voters don't suddenly aquire a short memory, about some of "Barack's"
personal history, he will not stand a chance at winning this thing. I am curious about
something else, how can you strongarm Mr. McCain into facing off with his own
party about this? Why would he want to cater to you on this issue?
Seems so unusual somehow. Wake up democrats! These things about your
presumptuous nominee, his philosophy, his associates, etc. etc., do matter
to folks. These questions do matter.
On, and another thing......... while it seems that Mr. Obama is the new media, and
left party "darling", you have to get past the Clinton thing first.
That might be quite a challenge yet.

The problem with Republicans and Democrats slinging mud at each other, such as in this blog....name calling, insults, and all, is that there is no difference in the way both parties and supporters of both parties operate daily. You can't defend your candidate or party because for years both parties have been taking the US downhill. I feel the most sorry for the Bush bashers who believe a Commander in Chief is responsible for the every problem of the U.S. Check your congressmen and congresswomen for a real eye-opener.
As for Bush, I do not agree with all he does or believes, but history will report that he faced problems much greater than any president to date when 9/11 happened. It isn't the U;S. that has changed....not by itself,....if you can stop reading and listening to the liberal media for your "facts" then you may notice that the world has changed. No, not because of George Bush, but because people have stopped listening to any arguement other then their own. Namely we do not have the same values, we are too lazy to seek out the facts and form defendable or logical opinions. We in the U.S. are frankly self-centered and greedy as hell.
A Reverend in the Blog today calls those who disagree with him "morons" Now there is a Jesus attitude for you (read sarcasm) . Liberal professors don't help, most of whom have never held a real job. Same for Reverend Wright and Rev. Moron. Why would I care at all about these men's opinions? But it does make sense Obama has nothing but smoky reasons for not outright disavowing Wright and all he stands for.
Short verse: Opinions are easily formed and argued about. Keeping your eye on the big picture requires closer investigation of the breakdown in morality on a global basis. Unless you think beheading people, raping women, and killing people in a Mosque, train station, or in the marketplace is normal, be thankful Bush is around despite some shortcomings. But then that is a matter of opinion.
Don't waste your time trying to get through to a bunch of racist people that wouldn't have voted for Obama in the first place. We are talking about people who would rather see their country stripped out from under them before they vote for a black man. You have the wife of an impeached president who has been banned from practicing law and has put the american people up to their necks in NAFTA and your going to tell me hillary has nothing to do with it. Here you have Mr. clinton who is all for NAFTA, promoting his wife hillary who is against NAFTA. What's wrong with this picture. If Obama is being held responsible for Rev. wrights comments what do you want us to think about Hillary and her husband. My guess is that you would give Hillary a free pass on a list of dirt that goes back for years before giving Obama an inch on something that has nothing to do with him. By the time you people understand what is going on most of America will be on food stamps.
John McCain has been associating with the Republican party since 1981.
Everyone that is calling Rev. Wright a racist is a fool, and you obviously don't know anything about the man. He is not a racist and he is not anti American. How can you be anti American and put your own life on the line as a Marine to protect this country and our way of life? And if you think rev Wright is a racist, and you think Obama shares the same view, are you saying that Obama hates his own mother and grand parents? They are white! Do you think he hates the white part of himself? Don't be stupid! This election should not be about race, but it is, and that's a shame because we're all in this together. This country just might pass on the best possible candidate because he happends to be 1/2 black. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!
is this the US government? or kindergarden?
It’s truly frightening and sad to see how easily manipulated the public can be—including some of the posters here. Support Obama or not, but please base your decision on facts. Respect yourself, your fellow citizens, and your country enough to do that, at the very least.
As for those out-of-context snippets of Wright played ad nauseam on cable news, they are not representative of the fuller meaning of those sermons, let alone the man’s lifework of 35 years preaching and ministering. Again, if you truly want to be informed, you would bother to listen to those sermons in toto. I'm not arguing that Wright’s sentiments are all right, but neither is he all wrong. Plus—these are Wright's thoughts and words, not Obama's.
To those who argue that “Obama chose to sit in the pews for 20 years listening to anti-American, anti-white blah blah blah,” I’ve addressed the “anti-whatever” content issue, plus I’ll add this comparison. I’m Catholic and I disagree with my Church’s anti-gay and anti-birth control stance, and I differ with regard to the pro-life versus pro-choice dichotomy. I certainly completely disagree with how the Church hierarchy allowed the pedophilia abuse to continue for so long. And yet, as I said, I’m Catholic….
Many people—pastors, academics, journalists, rank-and-file people, even Mike Huckabee—have spoken and written about Wright’s statements and positions, many citing the African American prophetic tradition and calling for a more nuanced understanding of the pastor’s words. Try this from the Christian Science Monitor, “Did Obama’s Pastor Preach Hate?” http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/0328/p03s07-ussc.html?page=1
So, c’mon, people—even if you don’t support Obama, please don’t exploit Wright’s out-of-context comments; it only creates more misunderstanding, fear, and hate amongst whites and blacks and every shade in between, and we will all suffer for it. Rather, let’s use the controversy as motivation to broaden understanding all around. This is so much bigger than even the presidential election.
Play the Obama/Rev. Wright ad...........then you might understand why Obama's 20 year pastor, mentor and spiritual advisor...........who lead him to Christ.... could not lead Obama and his family in prayer when announcing his presidency. It was an important day for the Obama's.........but their 20 year pastor was not allowed to attend. Let the American people make judgement on the Obama/Rev. Wright ad.
Hillary's silence on this ad situation is deplorable....just goes to show how she will do ANYTHING to win, whether it's LYING about Bosnia, or LYING about her debt, or LYING about the fact that she AGREED that FL & MI wouldn't count, or LYING about her "experience", or LYING about her supporters being "intimidated" at caucuses.....both Hillary and Bill are COMPULSIVE LIARS!!!!!!!

shame the dems are so stupid ass to nominate Obimbo, he is a racist, everyone whom is honest knows. If McCain had been david dukes friend for 20 years, he would be a trash collector by now, and not by choice (hope obimbo can drive a truck)
