Indiana congressman announces for Obama

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 30, 2008 11:52 AM

Barack Obama just added his second new superdelegate of the day, and it's particularly noteworthy on two counts.

Baron Hill is a congressman in Indiana, which votes Tuesday. And in his endorsement statement, he specifically cites Obama's repudiation on Tuesday of his former pastor.

"His comments regarding statements made by Reverend Wright showed me another aspect of Senator Obama’s leadership -- a strength of character and commitment to our nation that transcends the personal," Hill said in a statement provided by the Obama campaign. "One of the tests of a true leader is his ability and willingness to come to a new conclusion based on new events. Senator Obama did just that yesterday."

Senator Evan Bayh, Hillary Clinton's most notable supporter in Indiana, had urged uncommitted congressmen to wait until after the primary to declare their allegiance. Hill, a former basketball star in the hoops-crazy state, noted that pressure.

"Some have advised me to be cautious, to wait and see which way the electoral winds may blow," Hill said in the statement. "I confess that I have listened to those voices and been tempted by their reasoning. But the stakes are just too high. We cannot continue to pursue the same politics of personal destruction we have engaged in for a generation, some never-ending 'groundhog day' endlessly playing out the cultural wars of forty years ago.

"If we are going to develop real solutions for Hoosier families, for America’s families, we have to move past the partisan gridlock," he continued. "I believe both Senator Clinton and Senator Obama want to do that and I believe both are formidable candidates. But I also believe that only one of them truly can....I believe Senator Obama has the capability to change the tone and tenor of politics in Washington. I believe that he can and will work with both parties and elevate the level of public discourse."

.

The Congressman says it best:

"We cannot continue to pursue the same politics of personal destruction we have engaged in for a generation, some never-ending 'groundhog day' endlessly playing out the cultural wars of forty years ago."

It's time to move beyond the divisions of the 60's. Your time has passed, let's MOVE ON!

I have a lot of respect for the superdelegates that have come out for Obama in the last couple of days. Obama has demonstrated that he has character and now these superdelegates have shown the courage of their own convictions.

Obama is a decent and reasonable man who wants to bring a more elevated tone to politics. He wasn't willing to just disown Wright when this controversy first surfaced even though that would have been politically expedient. Wright's recent actions have delineated the differences between his and Obama's philosophies and approach and Obama probably felt compelled to draw a line in the sand. Good for him.

Absolutely...time to put the '60's to rest and live for now and the future.

Too Late, under Duress, "changed relationship"....But Not "Ended Relationship"?
Barack Obama's pastor for 20 years, Jeremiah Wright, is not "A Distraction"! Reverend Wright is one of the "Facts" that "Help to Define A Person in an Election For President of the United States"!

It is how voters learn about a Candidate. It is Not "A Distraction". Should Campaign Discussions Only Allow "Pretty, Smooth Words, Good Hair, Charisma, and Banalities"?

The "Facts" that Barack attended one of the most Militant Black Liberation Theology Churches in Chicago, perhaps because it provided credibility as a Black Rights Organizer.... defines Who Barack IS! Barack's long history with Antoin Rezko and his being one of Barack's First Fundraisers, a Client in his law firm, etc... also Define Him

Obama cannot have it both ways. In a country where whites expect you to look white, and blacks expect you to act black, a biracial candidate of any party faces the worst of both worlds.

Because he wanted the cake of political privilege, Obama has tried hard to both have and eat it. Though he could not look white, he could act white... and since he looked black, Obama had a head start at being accepted among blacks. But there was that whole "acting black" complication.

How to establish one's black cultural bona fides, then? Obama decided to associate with authentically black institutions, including the black church community. Unfortunately, in supporting Jeremiah Wright's alienating creed of black liberation theology, Obama made a terrible (perhaps fatal) error.

So this day, when Obama has to choose between defending his 20-year ties to the radical mentor who helped him climb the black power ladder, or abandoning that mentor in order to pander to dumbfounded whites who thought he was "one of us" ... well, this day could have been predicted.

It's a shame that the Democrats will almost certainly kick off the general election season with a candidate so weary, so wounded, so weighed down by his old albatrosses, that he simply doesn't have a prayer against a unified and invigorated Republican Party.

Since this debacle is self-inflicted, it's hard to be sympathetic to Dems, given that they should have vetted Obama with open eyes and yet did not -- until now. And now is just too late.

Absolutely, we need to move on and support Senator Barack Obama the clear winner of the Democratic Party. Over and over, he has showen vision, leadership, and honesty. We need a fresh start in the White House. Someone who is not tied to groups' interests. Senator Barack Obama is an inspirational leader for ALL. We are against dynasties.

Realista, You need to get real-- The republican party is not unified behind McCain
and either of the Democratic candidates could win the election. The American
public is fed up with politics as usual. Why do you think so many new Democrats
have registered to vote? The Republican Party and McCain have their own baggage to contend with in the general election. Obama is by far the better of the Democratic candidates. We need a new direction in this country and he is the one
to provide that direction. Every time Clinton speaks on an issue I am wondering if she is telling the truth or not.

Thank you, Congressman Baron Hill, for endorsing Senator Obama. I fully agree with you that "We cannot continue to pursue the same politics of personal destruction we have engaged in for a generation, some never-ending 'groundhog day' endlessly playing out the cultural wars of forty years ago."!!

Also, thanks a million to Congressman Bruce Braley (Iowa) and Congresswoman Lois Capps (California) for their wonderful endorsements of Senator Obama!

We are being give a uniquite opportunity to elect a great man of integrity, honesty, good character, superb leadership and managerial skills (just take a look at his wonderful campaign!). He is the President for our present and our future and we will be the better for it. He will not only unite the United States of America but the world as well. Let's do everything we can to ensure Senator Obama becomes our next President and Commander-in-Chief!! With him at our helm, the world will once again respect us as the great nation we are destined to be.

Obama for President and Commander-in-Chief of our great nation and of our brave and great military forces.

NOTE: Hilliary, with her sniper fire claims, greatly insulted and spit on the 4000+ (and counting) servicemen and servicewomen who sacrificed their lives for us. She spit on the thousands and thousands that have returned maimed, missing limbs, severly brain damaged, paralyized, and severe emotional and mental stress syndrone. She spit on the families of these brave men and women, She spit on our military forces, past and present. Then, to top it of, she went on the Jay Leno Show joking and laughing that she was late "because I got caught in sniper fire.!! Please, fellow Americans, Hillary has shown she has no respect for our Military/Armed Services and its members. We cannot look upon these abhorrent comments as "misspeaks"! She is NOT fit to be President and Commander-in-Chief of our Armed Forces!!

Why didn't the media go after her on this? Why didn't the media show its indignation and disgust with Hillary for spitting on our dead and injured, on the military services, and on America?? Come on, media, do your job and call Hilliary on these issues! Coming under sniper fire is NOT a joking or laughing matter!!!

Baron Hill's reasons for endorsing Obama have nothing to do with Obama's resume. It has everything to do with $$$$$. Obama's PAC gave $10,000 to Hill's campaign since 2006 and Clinton only donated $2,500.

Look for Rep. Ellsworth to endorse Obama as well because Obama gave him $10,000 and Clinton $0.

Since 2005, Obama's PAC has donated $710,900 to superdelegates, more than three times as much as Clinton's PAC has. Her PAC distributed $236,100 to superdelegates during the three-year period.

Money buys votes. Check these websites:

Type your comment here... I'm seeing it contrary to Realista. Obama is not weaker, he's stronger. On the other hand, Clinton has miles and miles of battle scars that the Republicans can pick the scabs off of. She's not so tough... her complaints to the moderators highlighting the snl skit.. her complaint to MSNBC about saying she was pimping Chelsea... she can't handle it. She sure can dish it, but she can't really take it.

Obama has the right temperament for the job. Hillary's just going to obliterate everything... cause her ego won't let anything remain standing. She does not have the temperament to handle the job. She's too destructive.

Boston Ultra Liberal Elite HUBRIS ---
Howler Dean, Teddy Chappy, Helmet Dukakis, and Swifty Kerry ... ALL LOSERS!

Will Be Losers in November 2008 AGAIN, along with McGiovern, Gene McCarthy, Fritz Mondale! Only Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton beat the rabid religious and social NeoCons, and Military-Industrial Campaign Money Machine.
It is ALL ABOUT MONEY. Crash McCain has Promised up to 100 Years of Iraq Military Contracts to Corporate America! Barry Soetoro wants to Win on "Time For Change"? Weak.
