Magazine covers on Democratic divide

Time magazine is the latest to use an eye-catching cover -- morphing together the faces of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama -- to write about the protracted Democratic nomination battle.

"THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE," the new issue declares over a face made up of Obama's on the left and Clinton's on the right.

The Time cover was inspired by the NBA's playoff ad campaign with the same slogan. One of the ads has half of LeBron James's face and half of Kevin Garnett's from the Boston Celtics.

The New Republic last month went a step further and combined the two candidates' faces into one on its cover that said, "We Have to Choose One."

UPDATE: Now, The New Republic's editors are complaining they were ripped off. "Can we get royalties at least?" their blog post today asks.

The larger point is that Clinton and Obama appeal to different constituencies in the Democratic Party -- older, white, and blue-collar voters for Clinton; younger, black, and upscale voters for Obama -- and the eventual nominee needs to unite them to have the best chance to win in November.

  1. hi Ben,
Thought you might like to see this. I think I know how I'm going to vote now...Hilbar, or is it Barhill? or is it Clinbama? or Obamaton? I'll figure it out by Nov. Seriously, I would like to see the two of them on one ballot. By the way, have you signed up for jury duty? Let me know! We're home, school vaca. Talk to you soon.
    Love, M

  1. This speaks to the larger choice in this election on whether the United States is ready to take a step forward and choose a black president. The cover really points this out with taking the color out of their faces and making them grey/black and white. I am personally getting tired of this process and wish it would end so we can finally have a true discussion about the issues and allow McCain and Obama to outline their differences to American public.

  1. I like that you can't really tell the gender nor race of the morphed picture. But... sort of looks like a black lesbian.... we should have a black lesbian president!! :)
