McCain on the rise

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 17, 2008 11:11 AM

As the Democratic slugfest goes on and on, Republican John McCain is emerging as the biggest winner.

A new poll out today is the latest to show the presumptive GOP nominee at least even with Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in hypothetical November matchups.

Five months ago, the Associated Press/Yahoo survey showed people preferring an unnamed Democrat for president over a generic Republican 40 percent to 27 percent, but now McCain leads Clinton 37 percent to 36 percent and Obama 36 percent to 34 percent.

The Arizona senator has closed the gap with the support of people who voted for President Bush in 2004 but are now unhappy with him and the backing of independents and moderate Democrats, the survey found. It also found that McCain's personal qualities are attracting voters.

In the poll, 47 percent said they found McCain likable, up 8 percentage points from November. Obama's likability quotient rose 6 percentage points to 57 percent, while Clinton's dropped 3 percentage points to 37 percent.

The AP-Yahoo survey has been tracking the views of the same 1,844 adults during the campaign. The new poll, conducted April 2-14, has an overall margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

  1. Was last night's debate supposed to be a joke or did it just turn out that way because of the incompetent moderators ? Charlie Gibson and George ( can't enough of those good years that I worked for the Clintons ) Stephanoupolis. How can McCain possibly lose this election. He has such a commanding grasp of economical issues . His way to fix the problem of soaring gas prices is " Let's give the people a tax holiday." I am afraid that it is John McCain who needs a holiday

  1. McCain likable. I think I'm going to vomit.

  1. Anyone who votes for Sen Clinton after her lies, her distortions, and her husband's fiascos, must want more of the same in the next four years! Yeah, we had some good times during the Clinton years, but we were also tortured through Pres. Clinton's impeachment process. What makes anyone think it will be different?! It will be a 2-person Presidency; that's why Hillary stayed with Clinton after all of his affairs. Barrack Obama offers a fresh perspective, a positive, productive presidency. And no matter what you say about the Obamas, they don't have the baggage, secrets, and "ghosts" the Clintons possess. Hillary thinks she has been completely vetted by the Repulicans? I don't think so, they're too eager to get at her again..

  1. Ramona,

Hilary has been vetted. Obama has not. He seems annoyed by the fact that people want to know who is in his sphere of influence. Yes, we will get Bill if we elect Hilary. Two for the price of one if you ask me. The world loves him - what a great way to improve our standing now that George Bush has trashed it. I was not tortured by the impeachment process. I am tortured now as is almost everyone I know: high gas prices, falling home values, cuts in spending on schools, outrageous national debt. Did you hear Hilary last night. She knows her stuff. she has specific ideas and plans on how to fix this mess. Obama is inspirational but he will take too long learning the job. We do need someone who can hit the ground running.

  1. Obama has more "ghosts" than Hillary. The liberal media is just reluctant to expose the true Obama.

  1. Anyone that votes for Obama and tries to put aside his strong beliefs of that church he attended for the last 20 years, should be ashamed to be an American. You must hold anyone accountable for that behavior.

  1. That debate was pure political diatribe. No answer was straightforward, and I feel no question was answered, But I did get the message. They both want to "Make America Better", yet offered no real strategy or ideas. I don't understand why Americans respond to such rhetoric. Buzz words like "Change" and "Hope" are meaningless if you can't take a firm position or offer a firm idea. These candidates are no different then any other promise makers we've heard come election time. The only thing that they have mastered is avoiding answering the questions that matter, and getting people to forget the real issues.

  1. The ghosts you speak of Michael are only Hillary trying to spook you. No one is perfect, certainly not her or McCant. So just quit the spook fest, because it's plainly clear it's really backfiring. The People are pissed, bitter and ready to move on.

    gObama!

  1. Obama is fooling himself and the political newbies that are supporting him. The political establishment (be it Republican or Democratic) will never allow itself to be altered by one individual. Definitely not someone, like Obama, who is a political neophyte. If Obama is frustrated with his failure to keep the issues as the main topics of the campaign, wait until one after another of his programs are continuously shot down, if he were to become Pres.

  1. If you like Bush and the direction the country is headed, then absolutely vote for McCain because more of the same is what you'll get.

  1. I couldn't disagree with most of these comments more - the focus of that debate last night (led by the moderators) was petty, nitpicking and missed the whole point of what these debates are supposed to focus on, which is key issues such as the war in Iraq, our economy, health care, etc. Hillary Clinton continues to press on in a campaign she cannot win and, in doing so, is opening the door for McCain by constantly attacking Obama - mostly over non-issues b/c she's desperate. For the good of the democratic party and this country, it is time to move on!!

  1. 2 things come to mind here.... First of all Ramona - the Clinton Impeachment process that we all were forced to go through was put on us by the Republicans.. . NOT the Clintons.
2nd, Michael Sullivan says that Obama should be held accountable for his behavior.... WHAT behavior? For attending a church where he doesn't agree with all that is said? PLEASE Mr. Sullivan, I don't care WHAT church one goes to, there will be things preached that you don't agree with. I applaud Obama for staying with the church while he distances himself from those things he finds disagreeable.

  1. Does anyone really think Obama will be any less of a disappointment in office than Patrick has been?

Posted by Brendan April 17, 08 01:43 PM
  1. Yes indeed and that's the point of that ridiculous sideshow you're calling a debate!

Do you think the Mainstream Media has a stake in keeping the Republican Brand alive? Can you explain why a serious, non changing 80% of people in this country think America is headed in the worng direction but, yet, somehow, McCain leads in many National polls?

We can explain it. We know Media will not do as it should, it will do what generates a bigger bottom line!

  1. Barak Obama committed no crime, told no lies and made no objectionable statements. People are desparate to derail his campaign and so they are trying to paint him with the brush of OTHER PEOPLE"S statements. Fortunately not people are buying it.

Hillary Clinton is a demented and frightening person. She has been found untruthful over and over again. She and her entire family are incapable of honesty or of human interaction as we normal people would recognize it. Her obsessive zeal to achieve this goal has made her into something pretty scary. I honestly believe there is a possibility that she will injure someone when she finally realizes that she will not be the president. I hope that does not happen.

  1. what are the 'ghosts" that obama may have...

  1. I couldn't agree with Debbie more. John McCain is far from "perfect" but at least he seems to be the only candidate who is answering tough questions with substance.

Yes, he voted for the war, and yes his position is the same. Hillary has gone back and forth on this so many times I have no idea when she's telling the truth, or making it up.

People are giving Obama way too much credit. He wasn't even elected into the U.S. Senete at the time this war was coming together, so who cares what he was for, or against. - I'll bet his position on this today would be completely different if we did find WMD's and arrested, or killed Bin Laden.

  1. Obama is for the people not corporations

The choice is academic. Do you want cheaper gas, clean air, trustworthy food, jobs to say in America? Obama's campaign is payed for by the people. Clinton and McCain are funded by Corporations. Clinton and McCain can't give you the aforementioned items. Not profitable. Only Obama who is not beholden to the corps can deliver. Have some self respect and vote for Obama!

  1. There are three tough choices here. Obama is inexperienced, but can "talk a dog off of a meat wagon" (ie, makes great speeches). Clinton has more experience, but has questionable character. McCain has character and some foreign policy experience, but no experience on the economy (said so himself) and is 72 and was a POW - the strain of the Presidency makes me wonder who his VP choice will be. I agree with Maureen on the problems that she identified. I also think that if the super delegates nominate a candidate who is running second in delegates and popular vote, it may be bad for the country. This is not what our Founding Fathers had in mind.

  1. If you like GW Bush - You'll Love McCain.

4 more years of the same BS.

  1. I'd prefer Obama over Hillary by a huge margin, but as long as it's not McCain it's fine by me. The GOP has had 8 years to launch a trillion-dollar war to nowhere, demolish the economy, and completely squander our goodwill in the international community. After the last two elections, you'd think we'd have learned our lesson. I guess we'll see.

  1. Obama's ties to a racist, anti-Semitic pastor, to a terrorist who is unrepentent about his acts that lead to the deaths of at least three people, and to a slumlord (Rezko), who was busy stealing government funds with the aid of Obama, all tell me one thing: Obama is a naive, untested man. No one with 2 years in the US Senate and a thin - and that is being charitable - resume should be elected President without answering some key questions in debates. And after Obama's performance the other night, his weak-kneed answers show that he is far from ready for prime time.

McCain gets my vote if Obama is the nominee of this party. Sorry, folks, but we cannot elect a leader who belongs in the sandbox playing with toys, instead of a president who must lead this country in war.
