North Carolina debate is no-go

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 21, 2008 04:05 PM

Last week's debate in Philadelphia could very well be the last between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama because they could not agree on a date to face off again.

The N.C. Democratic Party announced today that it has cancelled its scheduled April 27 forum, to be broadcast on CBS and moderated by anchor Katie Couric.

The party's announcement cited logistical issues, but also noted "there were also growing concerns about what another debate would do to party unity."

Clinton had accepted the April 27 date, which is nine days before the May 6 primary in North Carolina. Obama had not accepted, but had agreed to last Saturday.

The two Democrats have debated 21 times. They are scheduled to appear at North Carolina Democrats' Jefferson Jackson dinner on May 2.

  1. Obama has got to be able to debate. McCain won't let him off the hook on that one.

Obama has got to be able to answer questions, whether they be big or small, tough or easy, if they effect his credibility. It is one thing to stand at a podium and get to do all the talking, another thing altogether to be called to bear on the credibility of all that talking.

No great leaders leads this way. Not one.

  1. It was so painful to watch Obama struggle in the last debate. Debating takes skill which he unfortunatly lacks that ability. All I can say is...Coward.

If the Democrats prefer a coward as their representative, they deserve him.

  1. In the debate, Obama was very restrained (his hands tied), his responses were measured, aware that negative attacks on fellow Democrat will damage the party. Hillary on the other hand knows she is behind in every category, hence using negative attacks, willing to risk a serious damage to the image of the party, which in my opinion is already visible in the polls against McCain. What she is now doing is not going to help her win in November.

As far as I am concerned she is Washington politics as usual, but we need change and I am voting Obama.

    I decided to vote Obama.

  1. Let's see if Yael and Pahqlle can read:
"Obama ... had agreed to last Saturday" [but] "The N.C. Democratic Party announced today that it has cancelled its scheduled April 27 forum, ...[citing]... logistical issues, but also noted "there were also growing concerns about what another debate would do to party unity." "

If you think that McCain can debate better than Obama you are in for a great surprise. Obama's problem is how to beat up on a woman from the same party without losing the very voters he is trying to attract. If you saw Clinton's shock when Obama put the "elitist" issue to rest with the "cookie baking" argument , you know what I mean...

  1. Obama is a coward because he refuses to wallow in the dirt and sludge that Hillary is so comfortable in wallowing? Perhaps, but here's a more enlightened view, IMHO.

Obama refuses to knee-cap, Swiftboat, or kitchen sink, distort or otherwise unfairly attack Hillary. Instead of bringing up her seemingly unending "baggage" as Hillary calls it, Obama would rather talk about his position on the issues and draw contrasts with McCain thereupon.

That's the kind of debate I want and Obama is the kind of candidate I want having that debate. As for Hillary (and Bill), she seems best suited for WWE.

  1. A VERY GOOD ARTICLE FROM FACTCHECK.ORG ABOUT THE RACIST THEOLOGY OF OBAMA''S CHURCH:
The “theology” that Wright teaches at his church is nothing like Christianity as most people understand it. The brand of theology which Wright has been teaching Obama and the others at his church is called “black liberation theology.” Wright admits this and it is stated on the church's website. Black theology is based upon the premise of the white oppressor against the black oppressed. This is why, for example, that Wright refers to Jesus as black, and his killers as white. This is the only way the story of Jesus fits within this brand of “theology.” Rev. Wright cites James Cone, another proponent of black liberation theology, as his theological inspiration. Here are just a couple of James Cone's quotes: (1) “To be Christian is to be one of those whom God has chosen. God has chosen black people." (2) "While it is true that blacks do hate whites, black hatred is not racism." (3) "All white men are responsible for white oppression." (4) "Theologically, Malcolm X was not far wrong when he called the white man "the devil." (5) "If there is any contemporary meaning of the Antichrist, the white church seems to be a manifestation of it." (6) “Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community … Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.” *** These statements, and this “theology,” are fundamentally racist and divisive. The fact that Obama has chosen to belong to this racist church for 20 years speaks volumes about his character and judgment, and flies in the face of his pronouncements about his ability and intent to “unite” this country.

  1. I'm sure K. Couric could do a better job of moderating than did Charlie and George but I am not sure that there's anything productive for the American people in so many debates which are really not debates but more or less free advertisements that are pseudo-moderated.

There will be debates when there are (finally) two nominees but getting a nominee for the democrats seems to be taking some time.

  1. Obama doesn't like the tone of questioning....wah, wah wah. At least Senator Cliinton's got a set and coming from a Republican...that's not easy to say. Stay tuned for more on Obama and his big mouth wife. It's starting to come out.

The two stand ups for the last debate were George S. and Charlie G. They asked tough questions that millions of us more want to hear the answers to.

  1. Ok America....You saw what happens to a candidate that's been..so far..shielded by the media..ie..no tough questions to answer in all these months. He was unprepaired..lied through his teeth and tried to deflect direct questions. Sorry Obama...You were exposed for the lame candidate you are. Try Europe...they like socialists over there.

  1. Responding to GoBama

You clearly do not understand intricacies of politics to know why things are or are not done.

Obama will not fair well in a debate with McCain either (McCain knows how to handle himself).

A debate isn't a Q&A session which apparently Obama thinks it is. If Obama is unable to answer the question given and at the same time take control and change the direction of the conversation to present and defend his arguments or issues...that's on him. He asserts the issues weren't discussed, well if he's unable to take control of the situation...that's on him. A debate is just as much about who can take command of the aurgument besides how they answer the question. Clearly Obama does NOT have that commanding ability.

  1. 1. Obama didn't stumble in the last debate, he refused to resort to the types of negativity that Clinton is willing to. that's class, not weakness.

    2. if you actually think the ability to debate is important for a president, you probably spent a few too many years in debate club.

    3. 21 Debates. 21. it's not simply a matter of party health, people are sick of seeing these two debate. Neither side is saying anything new. The only new stuff is stupid, classless, meaningless attack garbage.

    4. If James doesn't think that black people haven't been oppressed and white people haven't been the oppressors, then he needs to open a history book (this from a white guy)

  1. It amazing how many people are afraid of a Black Man. 1st off, he is only half black so he is racist against half his family? 2nd he said his daughters shouldn't get special affirmative action rights when they go to college.

  1. Nobody is saying that debating is not important. The important things within the democratic party has already been debated, and most people are tired of these debates. They only do damage by now, because, since we all know the important stuff, the tv networks will orchestrate another soap opera. Further, Obama will not debate 22 times with McCain, but two, three at the most. That will be enough. Hillary is a defeated candidate and she just want attention, just like her husband. So please, no more debate. Red Sox are hot, and it is better to watch them defeat the yankees that media political charades.

  1. No point in further debates among the Democrats. There have been over 20 so far. Half that number would have been more than enough. They should save it for McCain. He has shown that he is a weak debater. Only the war mongers among us will appreciate what he has to say.

  1. If you think Obama can debate or even ask intellegient questions, just take a look of his performance at questions and answer session with General Petaerus.

Obama is nothing but a manchurian candidate, that's why the old boys network love to support him. If he is elected, he will spend most of the next 4 years repaying debts. 'Changes we can believe in'? Come on, this is the USA, not a third world country waiting for a revolution. America doesn't need new 'changes'. America is always changing for the better, every day, every year.
