Nunn, Boren back Obama

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 18, 2008 12:44 PM

Two former Democratic senators endorsed Barack Obama today, adding their foreign policy and national security gravitas to his candidacy.

Sam Nunn of Georgia and David Boren of Oklahoma, both from the Democratic Party's conservative wing, will serve as advisers on Obama's National Security Foreign Policy Team, his campaign announced.

"Our next president -- working across party and economic lines -- must restore and strengthen our national purpose, our credibility, our competence and our spirit," Nunn, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee from 1987 through 1995, said in a statement provided the Obama campaign. “We need a president who has the temperament of a leader -- a sharp, incisive, strategic mind, a rare capacity for self criticism, and a willingness to hear contrary points of view."

Boren, who was chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, added, “Senator Obama is also a person of sound and good judgment. He had the good judgment more than five years ago to warn against our involvement in this tragic and costly war. He also understands the need to repair our partnerships with other nations and to more effectively use diplomacy to serve our national interests."

  1. Is there any particular reason that the endorsement of these two gentlemen should have any influence on any of us as voters. Do they believe that people of their respective states do not have the intellect to decide for themselves for whom they will vote? If, because these gentlemen have been in the government previously, their endorsement will cause a great number of voters to simply follow like "sheep?"

Preview the years that these folks were in Washington and you will quickly discover that a great many of the problems we are now confronting had their origination in their time period. Politicians are a lot like syrup, they simply ooze around and cling to their old embedded ways.

Surely both parties have better candidates than are being presented to us at this time. In the final stage what we have here is "tweedly dee" and "tweedly dumb."

  1. I think Democrats who remember the 80s early 90s might realize the gravitas that Obama's might have, but for younger folks, this isn't much of an endorsement. I was between 2 and 12 in the 80s and don't remember much about these people.

  1. dharper,

You mean in the time period while Bill Clinton was president, and when Nunn served with Hillary Clinton in the Senate; as she voted for a war, for which she did not even bother to read the intelligence.

  1. It does'nt change my vote in NOT voting for Obama. I just cannot beleived these persons who have earned their stature are blindly embracing a person who just cannot win the GE because of his inexperience and bad judgement associating himself with undesirables. These people just cannot learn their history that's why their party will extend once more their losing streak.

C'mmon, It does'nt take to be a rocket science to pick between a bad and good apples, you just get the most ripe one.

  1. Jeri:

Oh and you know more about the political process than Sam Nunn and David Boren? Astounding but you are right, they have earned their stature and the right to make appropriate judgements.

Don't you think they haven't taken all of the mud thrown at him into account? How long have you been in government and how long have you been an apple judge or rocket scientist?

  1. A lot of people might say, "who is Nunn/Boren"' . that's like me saying, "who are JFK and RFK"? Nunn/Boren were important in their day although not to the magnitutde of the Kennedy's, i believe, and i don't think u have to major in history to know about people critically involved in american history, which Nunn/Boren were. read a book, magazine or newspaper once in awhile, maybe watch the news on tv every year or so. they support Obama, ive read about them, they are intelligent and well informed people, everyone on both sides of the political spectrum respects them. The question should be, why are these former pols/insiders not supporting the the wife of a former prez, why is that? they don't like her pantssuits :-)

  1. Mr.Sam Numm and Mr. David Doren picked the right candidate.

Senator Clinton is out of touch with todays modern world.

She keeps talking about what she did 35 years ago.

It is time for American to Move-on!

Young people are the ones fighting this war, losing the use of their limbs etc,
    etc..
We need young people that are educated in Science and technology.

Our college students are not going to be able to afford to go to college.

Check your colleges out and see who is teaching math and science, Biostastic is a foreign language to most of the American college studies.

  1. Sam Nunn recently said that his worst mistake as a senator was to vote against the Gulf war.

Now he has made another humongous mistake that is worse than the other. He has just endorsed the most liberal presidential candidate ever!!!

Sounds like the Yellow Dog Democrat is still alive and well.

I am so glad that these mighty men of valor were not afraid of the "powers that be" They have stood back, watched, analyzed and have come to the only rational conclusion (Obama 2008)

  1. If michigan and florida had been allowed to vote they would have gone for Clinton. Now they will be so pissed of that Obama blocked them that they will vote for McCain.

The whole democratic nomination process is a sham. The people don't count, its all just a smoke screen. I have had it with the dems. If Clinton loses this I and almost everyone I work with will be voting for McCain. We are very pissed about this whole situation.

  1. Those suggesting that Obama has too many negatives to get elected are ignoring McCain's negatives. The man has a history of being hostile and belligerent when things don't go his way. He wore a dunce cap throughout his school days and often gets his facts confused. His scandals range from being one of the Keating 5 to personally profiting from cheating Native Americans in Arizona. It's even possible that some ex-POWs will come forward to accuse him of working with the North Vietnamese. Ol' John has a lot of negatives.

  1. These two gentlemen are not only intelligent and decisive, they have America;s best interest at heart. They recently were involved in a conference with other important people of both parties in an effort to determine the best path that will take us back to being as we once were: the United States of America.

During his term as senator, I sometimes thought that Boren was a republican. Both of these men, Nunn and Boren, know how to work both sides of the isle to get the right thing, that is the non-political thing accomplished.

    Excellent choices, Senator Obama!

  1. I'm worried there will even be elections. The Neocons will stop at nothing to protect their strangehold on the nation and the world. I wouldn't put it past them to stage another fake terrorist attack on the US and suspend elections entirely.

Hilary is done, but down in FL-24, there is another Hillary. her name is Suzanne Kosmas. She's a millionaire do-nothing pro-war DINO running against a true progressive--Clint Curtis--for the Democratic Congressional nomination. Election integrity whistleblower Curtis--the man who wrote vote-flipping software for Congressman Tom Feeney, then blew the whistle--deperately needs our support. Please visit Clint's site and contribute $5 today! If America is to survive, we have to get rid of all the status quo do-nothing deals and bring in some truth-tellers who are NOT afraid to stand up to the Neocons. Clint Curtis is one of the few. Please support him at http://www.clintcurtis.com/contribute.htm.

  1. Barrack Obama is the singularly worst presidential candidate in American political history. He has little experience, he takes no stand on issues, his campaign is nothing more than publicist rhetoric and his personal, unrevealed, positions are a danger to our country.

Sam Nunn is a terribly frustrated politician who will do anything for office. His failed bid to run for the presidency reveals his being out-of-touch with political realities.
Sadly, no presidential candidate is worthy of being our next president, but Obama is by far the worst of the three.
Sam, you have lost a part of the considerable respect we once had for you.

  1. SUPERDELEGATES SHOULD REMAIN INDEPENDENT UNTILL THE CONVENTION.....

Superdelegates remaining undecided should be left alone and independent to decide which candidate to support.

They should take all the time they need ….

  1. I am new to this blog but is very interesting to me the effect that Hillary's Republicanized campaign strategies have had on her supporters. They seem to be enveloped in the fear of Obama. Fear of his beliefs, fear of his associations, fear of his electability. I thought the politics of fear would be left to the Republicans, or has Hillary taken that step too in her obsession with winning.
And by the way, jeri, the candidate blindly endorsed was Hillary, not Obama. It was the party machinery that put her in the forefront. Remember? She was a shoe-in way back when----and then people began to see her for what she really is. No, it doesn't take rocket science to tell a good apple from a bad one, but whatever it takes, you need a course in it

  1. Ok; it looks as if Obama's on his way. A few thoughts here. First is his running mate. If Sen. Obama has such a thing as a solid base, it's the 35 or under crowd, so his running mate should be someone with recent exposure. My first choice would be Dennis Kucinich, who actually READ the patriot Act before giving it the thumbs down. Second would be John Edwards. I know he stated he wouldn't run for VP again, but people do change their minds. Either of these brilliant men would cut their rethug opponents to ribbons in any FAIR debate(s), which brings us to #2, the debates. The latest debacle between Clinton and Obama must NOT be repeated. A fair debate would one in which VOTER'S questions would be randomly drawn on the debate stage during that debate. These questions should be on the real issues and not tabloid crap, and we don't need bubbleheaded jerks, shilling for someone else moderating the debates, either. Finally, the Secret Service had better have it's guard up. There are plenty of sadistic, bigoted, halfwits with guns, only too willing to take potshots at Obama out there.

  1. The press has been brutal to Hillary. It is an insult to all women. Hillary has made an incredible achievement and is policy oriented and smart. The media is completely controlled by corporate America and why are they making Obama the nominee for Democrats? If Hillary is not the nominee, I am NOT voting. It sounds like a good old boys' club yet with all the male endorsements of Obama. I give up on the Democrats.

  1. I am a woman about the same age as Hillary. As much as I would like to see a female president, sorry, I don't think she's the one. It's unbelieveable that she stated McCain was better equipped to manage the country than Obama. She lied about the sniper fire in Bosnia. She cannot downplay her vote to go to war in Iraq. If you are dumb enough to vote Republican because Hillary is losing, then you deserve McCain, who is at least as stupid as that other president who's almost gone but is trying to take our country down with him.

  1. It is not without metaphysical coincidence(some will say cosmic destiny) that a man born of a white mother and a black father WILL bring this country back to its
original title - the UNITED states of america. He is a dreamer, and a good one at that!! He is an intellectual, and one of the best Washington has seen since JFK.
He is a man of spirit, not afraid to say what he really feels AND - he is a man of faith. Just because he has not overstayed his welcome in the halls of corruption in DC does not mean he will be untrue in the Oval Office.

McCain is too old, and will just confirm Bush's 3rd term as president. The Clintons, if they are smart, will bow out with grace soon and save what tatters remain of the the GOOD Clinton years.

When a country such as the USA is ready for a change, nothing can stop the momentum that has been building for eight years now. Do the RIGHT thing and vote for the RIGHT man for the job - Barack Hussein Obama - and if you don't like his middle name- call him Barack Jesus Obama- and THEN vote for him.

  1. Nunn and Boren represent the right wing corporate militarist wing of the Democratic Party. The fact these two support Obama makes crystal clear Obama is nothing more than the proverbial wolf in sheep's clothing.

I switched from being a Democrat to Independent in 1996 after being a life long FDR/JFK Democrat in response to the selfish, elitist, partisanship corporate globalist takeover of the true Democratic Party.

I recently changed voter registration back to Democrat for the privelege of voting for Senator Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton on April 22 in the Democratic Primary because she deserves the nomination on her own merit. Too bad the faults of the Clinton Administration of her husband have been used to try and squash her.

And if Hillary is not the nominee come November 2008, I will vote for anyone but Obama. Unlike Obama, I believe that an illegal alien must be deported from the United States and prevented from returning. I want my tax dollars to help returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan and their families; not paying the huge cost of support illegal aliens in our prisons with access to all kinds of benefits not afforded our own hard working people.

Obama is a FRAUD and the fact that Nunn and Boren back him speaks volumes why people should reject him.

Gee here we go again, I call it "ground hog day syndrom." i cannot wait to hear the whining when this election is over, i'm so tired of hearing the six degrees of seperation, hear say, and news medias psychological assessments, and i put "bitter"and "cling" in the annuls with"chads"!! And for the Michiganians and I am one i actually watched the news about the early primaries and KNEW that Senator Obama was not on the ticket so I didn't vote., but the clincher was when Governor Granholm endorsed Hillary Clinton made me think twice.
