Obama says he brought in another $40 million-plus

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 3, 2008 03:33 PM

Democrat Barack Obama continued raking in the campaign cash during March, raising more than $40 million, his campaign said this morning.

Hillary Clinton, who raised about $35 million in February, has not announced her March numbers. The Associated Press is reporting that she brought in about $20 million, her second best month of the campaign.

While not quite the record $55 million he brought in during February, Obama's total still gives more evidence of his remarkable grassroots money machine, which has grown to nearly 1.3 million individual donors.

His campaign said that the more than 442,000 contributors included more than 218,000 who donated for the first time. The average contribution was $96.

"Senator Obama has always said that this campaign would rise or fall on the willingness of the American people to become partners in an effort to change our politics and start a new chapter in our history,” campaign manager David Plouffe said. “Today we’re seeing the American people’s extraordinary desire to change Washington, as tens of thousands of new contributors joined the more than a million Americans who have already taken ownership of this campaign for change. Many of our contributors are volunteering for the campaign, making our campaign the largest grassroots army in recent political history.”

  1. Is it true that SHE has raised ONLY $3 million in March?

  1. Imagine raising all that cash and still can't close the deal...in fact, outspending Hillary 3-1, 4-1 in the recent primaries and still losing the big states, doesn't sound like a solid investment to me.

    Hillary08!

  1. An interesting perspective, DonnaNH, when Obama is ahead by all metrics - delegates, popular vote, and states. The polls also show Obama still closing any remaining gap in most races, and 1.3 million Obama donors disagree with you.

  1. If the average contribution is $96, that says something about the financial status of the donors to Obama's campaign. Does this mean that wealthier people are contributing to Obama, while the lower middle-class, blue-collar working class folks are Hillary's contributors? There is a saying "Money can't buy life", but it seems like money can buy the Presidency of the United States. Thank heavens that many voters can't be bought.
