Obama's unprecedented Pennsylvania ad buy

Posted by Sasha Issenberg April 8, 2008 02:57 PM

PHILADELPHIA -- If, as has been widely predicted, Barack Obama loses Pennsylvania, it will not be for lack of effort.

Obama is currently spending $2.2 million per week on television here, over twice what Hillary Clinton is spending and an unprecedented ad buy in Pennsylvania, according to Democratic media consultant Neil Oxman, who is not working for a candiadte.

"Nobody has ever spent 2.2 million in this state: not Rendell, not Specter, not Casey, not Santorum, not Bush, not Kerry," said Oxman, naming the best-funded candidates to run statewide in recent years. "That's unbelievable."

.

And when he becomes the President, people will blame him for having the best cabinet and the best advisers, for running the White House and the economy too well.

"Nobody's ever done that". What an excuse.

Nobody's run a campaign as successful as his. He's broken all fundraising records, how could he not break spending records?

I think Barack has a good shot at pulling an upset with this strategy which is combined with his grass-roots internet initiatives IF the ad message resonates effectively.

If he loses after this amount of money invested, then the DNC should stop calling for Clinton to drop out of the race. People drop out when they are significantly behind not when they are neck and neck.

obama's money comes from the people. he has every right to use the fact that his people are not only willing to vote for him but willing to use their money as political speech. The large corporations always abuse the freedom of speech element of money to justify their ability to outspend and drown out the little guy and it is great for a change to see the little guy and his/her little contributions finally wielding the loud powerful voice every dollar has.

And it would be much more economical to get rid of Hillary in this state than to keep vying with her in future states.

Real Democrats are used to campaigns against them by rich Republicans who always used to outspend them three or four to one. But the people weren't always fooled; we won a lot of contests in spite of the money poured into ads by our opponents.

Nothing has changed, except the darling of wealthy upper-middle class "progressives", Barack Obama, is the one spending all the money to defeat a real, honest-to-goodness Democrat, Hillary Clinton.

Hasn't worked with the Repbublicans, won't work with the Rebpublican-Lite campaign of Obama against his own fellow Democrat.

observer - When did the DNC call for Clinton to drop out? Playing victim doesn't work unless you are actually a victim.

Six months ago, Clinton would have gotten 100% of the vote in PA, and people didn't even know who Obama was. When people get to hear his message, they are very receptive. He's been gaining 2% in the polls every day.

Clinton is standing in the way. She didn't gain her support in the state. It was hers to start out, and it was hers to lose. And she's been losing it.

Of course she should stay in the race, but she should play clean and not damage the party's chances in fall.

In Texas and Ohio the Obama campaign outspent the Clinton campaign two to one or three to one, depending on which source you believe, and she still won the popular vote in the primaries. I heard some Texans say they got so sick of the relentless Obama ads that they think it actually worked against him. Interesting.

Regarding Comment #3: Sadly, they are not neck & neck -- barring a complete and total meltdown (or withdrawal) -- Obama, mathematically, has an unbeatable lead in states won, popular vote, and pledged delegates.

Plus he's gaining more superdelegates as time goes on. There is no "neck & neck" all that (both) Clinton(s) are in the race for is to play spoiler at this point.

Read Obama's position papers - he may not have the personal experienice, but he's put together a really good cadre to keep himself well-informed.

The same people that were complaining about Bush spending unprecedented amount of money, and screaming that money is spoiling the whole election process , are now happy for Obama. The same people that applauded when he was talking about accepting federal funding (and are now not complaining that he has broken that promise too). And for all that money, he is ahead only by 1% in the vote. Do you really believe that leftist liberal stands a chance to unite anything and lead the country?

Yes, Obama outspent Clinton in Texas and Ohio, and would have won in Texas if not for the Limbaugh legions voting for Hillary to keep Obama from closing her out. As it was he won more overall delegates than her in Texas because he beat her in the caucus, and the final numbers were much closer than they were compared to the polls two weeks earlier. Television advertising works, duh. Especially for someone like Obama who doesn't have the recognition factor that Hillary has.

Do John McCain or conservative republicans respect the moral foundation of this country? The U.S. Constitution was actually designed, among other things, to protect the people of America from misguided government.

U.S. Constitution: Amendment I - Freedom of Religion
Right now, for the first time ever, your tax dollars are funding religious groups you may not agree with. To add insult to injury, conservative judges have ruled that taxpayers do not have a right to challenge this expenditure.

Amendment IV - Search and seizure
Under the guise of court action against abortion, Conservative republicans had John Ashcroft subpoena all the medical records of literally thousands of women just like you and members of your family. Conservative republicans are invading your privacy every day. Unfortunately for all of us, they don't appear to care about our U.S. constitution, or by extension, the people of our great country.

Amendment X - Powers of the States and People
John McCain and conservative republicans have tried consistently to overturn States Laws. They used your tax dollars to destroy the will of the people of Oregon, and the famous "Death with Dignity" law; they lost, but undoubtedly will try again. Conservative republicans and John McCain do not respect States Rights.

Amendment VIII - Cruel and Unusual punishment
Would you rather die, or support a government which supported and sanctioned torture? The founding fathers would rather have died, and in fact they were proud to fight and die for our government: A government which specifically outlaws cruel and unusual punishment for very important reasons.

I am one of millions of people that view this straying from our moral foundations as very bad news for our country. I urge you to keep this in mind in the coming election.

MRS. HRClinton is now running just to get her self loaned money back. Plus she is making sure that Mr.BHObama pays for "taking" away her presidency. Nice to see that there are democrats out there that disapprove of HRC.

Or maybe she will drop in some damaging videos before the convention, potentially with the revered LFKhan and get BHObama out of the race altogether. Probably the whole Lewinsky thing was a family affair as far as planning goes; nothing wrong with that. A very determined and tenacious family, like a bunch of bulldogs that will not let you go no matter what. Hopefully Rush's effort to secure a "white" house will help. I believe that people like Senator Obama, but the Wright issue bothers alot. It's the judgement call. It goes to the core of the person. I would like to think that a future president of the united states, (incidentally he still attended as a US Senator) would know when to walk away. It seems way too convenient that now Wright retires and he has to say he would have walked away if he had not retired. I cannot reconcile all the answers about Wright, especially the inital one when he said he did not know about them. That's wrong, very wrong. The Renzko issue bothers me too. He was a senator when that happened. It's just not right.

Of course he has to spend so much in PA. HRC has all local Democratic machine in her back pocket. She has the governor and mayors of Pittsburgh and Philly. Of course I could be wrong. To read some blogsters, it's all about HRC losing because of sexists men and guilt ridden white liberals.

Clinton is a household name in this country. Barack Obama is not. Be it Ohio or Texas or now Pennsylvania, Clinton already has a name recognition, where as Obama has to build it.

In Ohio and Texas, he used ads to introduce himself to the people, because of which Clinton's lead reduced from 20 points to almost nothing. In Pennsylvania, he is doing the same thing - as more and more people learn about him (through his ads) he rises in polls - the latest poll shows Clinton at 50% and Obama very close behind at 44%.

The irony and tragedy is that there would be a last minute "development" like a 3AM ad or some other fear tactic that will make people to vote for Clinton and they would be quick to call that a "comeback".

But hillary is hardly at a disadvantage. Remember, she has had a former President of the US, leader of her party, campaigning since -- welll, when do you want to say she started angling for the white house--4 years ago--5, maybe 8, maybe longer? These Obama dollars are little people dollars, a couple million little people have found their voice and now are putting in an all out effort to put a silver bullet in Hillary--seems a wooden stake wouldn't do it. Now don't cry poor mouth rich lady, don't say you're being picked on--instead, acknowledge that the young senator has an organization superior to what arrogant folks such as you and Bill could put together. You have never had dignity and grace, so that's not at stake but the burden of your sniping could impact the general election. If that is your game plan you ARE sick. Here's a better plan, why don't you just dry up and go away.

Obama outspent Clinton in Texas and he only narrowed her lead from 20% to 4%. Clinton campaigned by her own admission for 40 years in Texas. Obama was behind by 26% in PA 1 month ago. Clinton was born in PA. He will outspend her and it will be close again. He will then go on to win the nomination and the general election.

Obama's average donation is less than a hundred dollars, so yes, he is funded by the people. More than a million people. And enough with these baseless guilt-by-association smears. Obama has never been accused of any wrong-doing in regards to Rezko. And who cares what the guy's pastor said. It's been taken totally out of context for one thing. You don't know what's in the guy's heart or how much love and guidance he has provided for people in other ways. Stop being so judgmental. Obama's the kind of person who can have colleagues and associates that he doesn't always agree with. He thinks for himself. I'd far rather have a president like him than a president like Bush who surrounds himself only with people agree with him. That's how you end up in a war that never ends.

As far as PA is concerned, Rendell should be able to dig up enough dead Philly residents for Hillary to carry the state. Look for 150% of eligible Philly voters to show up at the polls for the Democrat primary. Only 110 - 120% usually vote in the general election.

As far as name recognition goes, Obama has had the MSM give him plenty of free advertising. I am just wondering how many people in the coming primaries have seen the man Obama's tight-knit church gave their Man of the Year award to. Louis Farrakhan, a man that said white people were all blue eyed devils. A man that said whites were people too, they just have not evolved yet. A man that said the only reparations that would be acceptable for slavery would be to hand the entire country over to blacks. I am what Obama would call a typical white person that will not be voting for him.

Why I will not vote for Obama:

1. Are we likely to get GOOD CHANGES in Energy policy from an Obama administration?

Answer: NO. Why Not?

Because: Obama voted FOR the Cheney Energy Bill (H.R. 6) in 2005.

(which enabled the nuke industry to begin planning to build 29 new nukes (one of them in Pennsylvania)
- after 30 years of no new nukes being built because the banks wouldn't loan the money - too risky.

The Cheney Energy Bill solved that problem for the nuke industry by guaranteeing taxpayer payback of any of the nuke loans that default ... (with the risk of default rated by the Congressional Budget Office at 50% or greater).

Because: Obama has been IN with the nuke industry for decades. Excelon Corp. of Illinois is the largest nuke operator on earth - ( they own the nuclear power plants in Illinois and they own Con-Ed in NY state). Excelon has been one of Obama's largest contributors since his earliest days in politics.

Because: Obama would not even be IN the race for president IF he was not HEAVILY SUPPORTED by the nuke industry. GE (2nd largest corporation on the planet) & Westinghouse are planning to build many of those nukes.

GE owns NBC & MSNBC. Westinghouse owns CBS. That's the reason "the Mainstreams Media" are PUSHING Obama for President/ slamming & smearing the Clintons. ABSENT BILLIONS of dollars worth of FREE Pro-Obama Advertising/Propaganda provided by NBC/MSNBC/and CBS Obama would not have gotten past the New Hampshire primary.

2. Are we likely to get GOOD CHANGES in the ECONOMY?

Answer: It doesn't look good. Obama's financial advisors include the followng people:

JEFFREY LIEBMAN: SOCIAL SECURITY: In a 2005 policy paper Liebman advocated a mix of benefit cuts, tax increases and mandatory personal accounts.
DAVID CUTLER: HEALTHCARE: He Says High Health Care Costs are Good.
AUSTAN GOOLSBEE: RICH GETTING RICHER, EVERYBODY ELSE GETTING POORER:
The stagnation of middle- and working-class incomes, and the anxiety this has generated, is, he says, a most pressing problem, but policymakers must be mindful about trying to address its root cause, which Goolsbee says is "radically increased returns to skill." ( i.e. College degrees are paying off more & more --- which is true, BUT Certainly DOES NOT account for the rise of the super rich, nor the increasing poverty of everyone else.)

(Evidently, Goolsbee's not old enough to remember the beginning of that Income Inequality, or to recognize THE CAUSE. It began in 1981. THE CAUSE of it was and is that Reagan cut the top tax rate DOWN from 70% to the low 30% s, AND Corporations all over America BEGAN instituting "THE TWO-TIER WAGE STRUCTURE'. i.e. Pay the people at the top a LOT MORE, Pay Everybody Else a LOT LESS. (If you searched old newspaper archives from the early 1980s you would find newspaper articles about the sudden appearance of the Two-Tier Wage Structure.)

3. Are we likely to get GOOD CHANGES in Foreign Policy?

Answer: Not Likely.

Among a dozen or so Foreign Policy Advisors the most "senior" advisor is:

Zbigniew Brzezinski. Former National Security Advisor to President Carter. Using the CIA & Billions of dollars, he ginned up a War in Afghanistan .... seeking as he said to "give the Soviet Union its own Vietnam.".

He Created the Taliban and Al Queda/ JIHAD/madrassa brainwashing schools for that purpose. Supported the dictator Pol Pol who massacred millions of Cambodian villagers. When asked, if in hindsight, considering that Al Queda eventually attacked America, and Pol Pot slaughtered millions - IF he would change anything he had done .... Zbig answered NO, he was satisfied with the results.

Electing Obama President is not likely to reassure the rest of the world that the U.S. is going to cease having an insane foreign policy; is likely to put Russia on an even more nervous hair trigger than they are now.

The major problem with Obama and his advisiors is they are ACADEMICS who have lived the life of privilege out of touch with the real world --- Better educated and smarter than Bush's gang --- they are still likely to do just as badly at running the government --- for the same reason: OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY ... i.e. insane....people doing insane things.

4. Are we likely to get GOOD CHANGES in: appointing competent qualified people to run the government; instead of cronyism, or good changes that get rid of fraud, payoffs, and corruption in government?
Answer: No.

Because: Obama's friend Rezko was part and parcel of the mafia connected, corrupt, Daley Chicago political machine. Rezko was Obama's chief fundraiser from the beginning of his career in Illinois politics to his election to the U.S. Senate. There is very little coverage of the Obama Rezko/Daley corruption connections on National TV, but the local Chicago papers have a lot of info going back several years ... & it don't look good for Obama. He got IN with the Daley machine when his wife worked as an assistant to one of Daley's higher ups; Obama looks to be part and parcel of the same corrupt Daley political machine as his friend Rezko.

Some of the above is speculation based on facts.. What I KNOW Obama HAS ALREADY DONE makes all the above doubts and questions irrelevant in answering the question:

Is Obama qualified to be, or likely to be, a GOOD President?

Answer: NO. He has already done something so unconscionable, so dirty, so dangerous that no sane American would even consider voting for him. HE played the race card.

Those accusations of racism against the Clintons did not come from any public "Outcry" on the part of black people all over the country - those accusations of racism came solely and directly from the Obama Campaign. Obama was caught red-handed pushing those accusations to the press - in a 4-page Internal Campaign Memo - Listing those accusations & directing them to the press. The Huffington Post obtained a copy & published it on the web.

Shortly thereafter, during one of the debates, Tim Russert (MSNBC) ..... while rustling a copy of the 4-page Memo in his hand .... asked Obama .... your campaign has been pushing accusations of racism to the press (rustles pages) .... in a 4-page campaign memo .... what do you have to say about that?

Obama mumbled a few sentences ....( people in both campaigns get carried away and say things they shouldn't have said ... blah..blah) .... and .... then MSNBC/ the mainstream media .... NEVER MENTIONED IT AGAIN!.

Instead, MSNBC/NBC/CBS and all the rest of the mainstream CORPORATE-CONTROLLED media just went right on endlessly PUSHING the SAME totally ridiculous false accusations of "racism".

Obama made those accusations of racism .... in order to win the South Carolina primary. Obama has continued to make accusations of racism ... every time .... he falls behind in the polls. The question is: What USE of RACISM / inter-racial strife would he NOT stoop to IF elected President.

Which brings us to the Question: Is it likely Obama will TRANSCEND race... .Get Past the Politics of DIVISION;.. .....Unite this Country?

Given the DIVISION he has already created by making false accusations of racism - the answer is a resounding:
HELL NO!

Obama is the CORPORATE-CONTROLLED candidate being PUSHED by the CORPORATE-CONTROLLED Media.

Same Media that sold TOO MANY AMERICANS on Bush/Cheney. Same Media that SOLD U.S. a War.

Why I will Vote for Hillary Clinton:

1. ENERGY: We know we need to change to Cheaper, Cleaner, DE-Centralized/NOT Monopoly controlled Energy.

Clinton states that her Energy Plan does not include nuclear; nuclear can be considered ... in the future .... IF and when they find a way to MAKE IT CHEAPER and Find a way to safely dispose of nuclear waste.

(Obama and McCain have said they are Pro-Nuclear).

2. ECONOMY: The Clintons are the only candidates with ANY experience in TURNING an ECONOMY around before it slides into economic meltdown .... engendering unprecedented economic growth .... during the 1990's ...following Reagan/Bush 1's wholesale looting of the majority of the public and the public treasury.

3. FOREIGN POLICY: Returning the Clintons to the White House will Return the Rest of The World's Governments and Peoples to the SAME unprecedented High Level of Goodwill, RESPECT, and TRUST for the U.S. Government as they had during Bill Clinton's administration.

4. COMPETENT QUALIFED PEOPLE RUNNING THE GOVERNMENT:

Same as during Bill Clinton's administration.

5. REAL PUBLIC SERVANTS instead of cronyism, payoffs, corruption in Government.

The Clinton administration was investigated far more than any other entity in the history of the world.

Investigated by people who hated them AND desperately wanted to find a way to find them guilty of payoffs, corruption, SOMETHING, anything ..... Following 8 years and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of investigations the Clintons were not found guilty of ANY KIND of political corruption --- (which practically makes them eligible for political Sainthood).

As best I can see the Clintons are the candidates being backed by the GOOD wealthy people. Bill Clinton has spent the past eight years .... promoting and expanding CHARITY - particularly among the rich.

When Clinton was president what kind of legislation did he manage to get passed- despite a Republican Controlled Congress?

Two Examples: The Family and Medical Leave Act .... for the benefit of ordinary American working class people, and the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. (The two most essential elements for life on this planet.)

Put the Clintons back in the White House WITH a Democrat-Controlled Congress AND the REAL CHANGES We the People Need CAN get made.

The press and media have had Hillary finished before she even started. Don't they know by now that a woman's climb to the top occurs in small steps? Don't they see that Obama's campaign has been consistently spewing garbage about Hillary as they insist that they are not the mud slingers? Don't they see that if they said the same things about Obama they would be called racist-but are not called mysogynists in the comments regarding Hillary? Don't they see that Obama's inexperience and bluster are alarming and that this is not the 60's anymore? And, by the way, what is he supposed to be changing and uniting-Obama's agents of change still haven't made that clear. Tell the Junior Senator from Illinois to go away for the sake of the party.

It's funny and sad at the same time to see people think Obama is buying the election when Hillary is the one who raked in $100 million dollars in income in 5 years. Obama's money comes from the people. Wake up, people and smell the coffee people. Clinton made her money from special interests and "authoring" books she didn't even write. Bill made $6 million from his book "Giving". When are people going to start seeing through these 2? Give me a break.

Hillary is a household name in PA. Obama has not been. OF COURSE he should outspend her. He wants to do as best as he can -- and if he doesn't spend all he can, he won't. That doesn't mean he'll necessarily beat Hillary. But he'll close the gap. That's what happened in Ohio and Tex (which, btw, he won in delegates).

You Clintonites are scary...
WE the PEOPLE gave him $40 million in March. Your darling got $20 million, with over 30% from big donors of over $1500 per. Obama raised money at $96 per person. Those are SMALL DONORS, not coporations, you fools.
The money Obama spends, WE the PEOPLE have given him. Unlike the $109 Million Clinton's , Obama is not a multi-millionaire. His money comes from small donors like me.
I refer to you Clintonites as fools, as you turn a blind eye on your support of this lying, typical politician, enabling her to go on ruining her own legacy. I once respected her. That is gone now.

I refer t

Yes, he is out spending Hillary. That is the beauty of his campaign: Because he appeals to voters NATIONWIDE we will help fund him to get the votes in states that are full of MACHINE POLITICS like Pennsylvania.

He is spending my little donations to win.

Obama's campaign is efficient and well organized. It demonstrates the quality of his leadership because it's the people around him that have made it happen; he attracts and retains good people.

In a job where you cannot know everything it is critical to surround yourself with the best in the business. That is what Obama has done so far and I expect to see that when he is in office.

Why does Obama need to spend so much money when he has "Obama Hope"

That's going to be one expensive empty suit going up against John McCain in the general election. With respect to Senator Obama and his campaign, I guess it's "The end justifies the means."

For Senator Obama to align himself with the likes of Mary Mary, who likened gays & lesbians to murderers & prostitutes, is unconscionable. All to gain support from black evangelicals in the south.

At least Senator Clinton aligns herself with Sir Elton John. I don't believe I ever heard Sir Elton compare gays & lesbians to murderers & prostitutes.

Hhhmmmmmm.......it looks like Senator Obama prostituted himself for votes this time. What a vote-whore that Senator Obama is turning out to be.

I see nothing wrong with the way Obama is spending his money - his campaign is flooded with cash on a monthly basis and these are primary/caucus dollars that he's using so what else is going to use it for? His people are rather deft at handling money and they are using it wisely at the grass roots level. He's not longer just buying name recognition - he's now moved onto the message through television phase - he has to spend this money to close the gap on a daily basis till time's up. Two weeks ago, it was estimated by the Obama campaign in Philadelphia that this was going to be close (I was there when most of the new voter registrations were tallied) and soon thereafter, we've pulled almost even. He's spending the money given to him by the people in the best way possible. There has not been a better run campaign than his in all the years I've paid attention to such things.

But the signs are present that the win could be much larger than anticipated. The precise impact of the Wright controversy is not accurately reflected in the polling by many of the big pollsters, and the likely results of the Pennsylvania primary are muddled by the continuing play by big media over stories about Hillary Clinton that Obama is able to avoid the minute he responds. The reason for this is that the electorate in Pennsylvania is well-aware of East Coast politics, the East Coast MSM, and their play for Obama votes and foreshortening Hillary Clinton's run. From NBC to CNN, the bias favoring Obama is palpable. And Pennsylvanians do not like this at all. If you were voting in Pennsylvania, and knew you could end Hillary Clinton's run, would you vote for her? And if you did vote for her, and she won by any margin, is that not more telling than anything else. With the MSM and Obama's millions making no difference, where does that leave you? For that matter, what has changed since Texas and Ohio made their voters' views public?

If Pennsylvania answers these questions by again voting for Clintons, the voters will again show that Obama cannot win the general election. The Pennsylvania voters will also support the view that the national electorate, no matter what the MSM and Obama surrogates say, is not ready for anyone as liberal and dogmatic as Obama.

After spending all that money and still losing PA, it will be apparent that Obama cannot win the general election. He's behind in the women's vote, whtie vote and falling behind in the men's vote. Maybe it's because he uses sexist language toward women, like calling a worker in PA, "Sweetie." Or maybe it's because he called the whites, "A typical white person." Whatever the reason, he will not win PA, he cannot win the general election and the McCain Democrats will be out in full force, if Obama gets the nomination.

Oh sure. Obama has "no name recognition." He is only fawned over constantly in the media, posting something like 80-90% "positive" stories in the media, while Clinton is given far far less positive coverage. Besides, Primary voters are on average more politically informed than general election voters,. To suggest Obama doesn't have "name recognitition" this late in the game is disingenuous at best. If anything, his "blank slate" is an advantage.

Take it from a disenfranchised Floridian, who SHOULD fit the Obama voting demographic pefectly.... the Obama magic just does not resonate with many conservative and centrist democrats. Besides, since Obama is not on our side now in our fight to be heard, we will not be on his side in November. Period.

Stay strong Hillary, you're the only one who can win "the numbers" (including my home state) when they count - the electoral college in NOVEMBER! Pennsylvania will be yet another big swing state that Obama will be expected to "take" after "closing the gap" (mind you, many polls show Hillary STILL up by 18%+). He has no centrist appeal. Poor democrats. Always snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Why are reporters stressing Obama's Money advantage but not stressing where his money came from; ordinary small money donors?

Because this is a way that the media can deliberately attempt to turn Obama's money advantage against him with Penn Voters.

As we know, when the "he is outspending her 4 or 5 to 1!" mantra is repeated over and over again (which it is), a voter's reflex is to think, He's not buying this election!

So the Clinton Camp talking points that Obama is outspending the Clinton campaign is what the MSM push (but somehow, according to Hillary supporters, the MSM is against Clinton....Doh, OK )

The story is being pushed with this slant by most, if not all of the talking heads on the TeeVee as well as the press.

So the news is being massaged to insinuate that Obama is "buying the election"....although all that he is doing is getting people familiar with him, because he doesn't have the Name recognition or the party machinery advantage that Hillary does, but he does have millions of ordinary people that have donated to him.

If he wins, Hillary can say it was because of the money, and if he doesn't she can say that he didn't win despite outspending her greatly, and that really says a lot. Win win for Clinton in perception, although she isn't raising money (normally bad).

In other words, all of the sudden, raising a lot of campaign cash from ordinary citizens and actually spending it on advertising and organization makes you an elite buying an election, while having earned 109 Million dollars, having and giving to your own charitable organizationm and having a husband and your campaign manager who supports and profits from trade deals is good.

Up is down, and down is up in this election.......but suppositely, the media loves them some Barack (yeah...sure!)

I'm writing to the media to straighten them out....because I'm tired of the skewed coverage to portray Hillary as the victim. Enough, already!

Obama's money is coming from the people because he is represented as the second coming (or pied piper) by his staff and the news media. No substance, all fluff. It is really a shame in this country that our politicians are elected by the amount of their purse, not their capabilites. His capabilites are very unproven, inexperienced, and all bluster.

Posted by nancy wilkerson April 9, 08 07:02 PM

He has to spend that type of money to even the playing field. Clinton is like saying "google it" everyone knows what that means and are familiar with it. The ad spending is simply to cover the gap in a short period of time. Very smart and very necessary but not a measuring stick for Victory or Defeat. It just helps people get to know him. People in Pennsylvania are just starting to know him.

All this talk about media bias and favoring Obama sounds a lot like what republicans always say about the media; that it has a liberal bias. There is no evidence to support the republican's claim, just as there is no evidence that the media is somehow favoring Obama. This is clasic spin. Don't like what the media is reporting then smear and discredit the media.

The name calling from supporters on both sides deplorable, please be more respectfull.

It is incredible to me how misinformed many of the previous posters are on so many the the well established facts. It is this kind of blind faith that got us into the situation we are in now. If you are shooting your mouth off please be sure of what you are saying otherwise the level of discourse quickly sinks in to each camp's talking points and spin.

I am voting for Obama because I am tired of the politics of Fear (3:00 AM, ready on day one, etc.) this approach plays right in to the republicans hands. Do you realy think that HRC beats out John McCain on the Commander in Chief thing? I am convinced that only HRC can unite the republican party at this point, trust me, they will come together to defeat her. If you don't belive Obama or you think he is all talk, fine vote for the same old same old and see where we are in four years. We have an opportunity to go in a new direction with Obama, a progressive one. The politics of the center (more accuratly the center right) have failed by almost every measure for the middle class, electing HRC is simply a vote for the continuation of these failed policies.

Is Obama the perfect canidate? I don't know, is that even possible? What I do is that he has found a way to communicat progressive ideas to people in a way that resonates with their moral underpinings. I think it is imposible to deny that he is communicating with the public in a much different way then many of our recent leaders, and to me it feels like a breath of fresh air.

Go Obama, Go Democrats, it is time for progress.

Anyone who can honestly say that Hillary hasn't got the dirty end of the stick when it comes to the media is either deaf or ignorant. Why don't people just be honest . There is a very good reason for that . Look whos spending the money. The media in this country is a joke. The democratic party is rapidly becoming a joke. It is not at all what it was when I was growing up. It doesnt represent the people of this country any longer. Anyone who will sit and watch the evening news or the cable news and believes what they are saying or more importantly what they are NOT saying needs to get off the couch and do some research of there own. I never thought I would see the day that this country would be in this state. It seems like americans have their heads up their a----!
It shouldnt surprise me since Bush got in there not once but twice. And I bet if he could run again and he ran against Hillary he would be elected again.
I dont understand this hate for her especially from a nation with so many christians. supposedly.
For me there is only one choice Hillary Clinton. Think what you will or call me what you will I have seen enough from BHO to last me a lifetime.
BHO has 2 of the largest racists organizations in this country publically supporting him. The KKK proudly stating they have already given around $250,000 to his campaign. Gee I wonder what type of favors they may want? It is like I have been saying birds of a feather flock together. There are none so blind than they who will not see. WHY?

The name calling and infighting between the two camps is depressing and pathetic. The goal here is to win in November because the differences between Hillary and Obama pale when compared to McCain. Whoever wins the primary, please consider supporting them and encouraging all your friends to do so. McCain is sure to give us more war in Iraq and possibly in Iran, more restrictions on our civil liberties, more disastrous tax breaks; In short a 3rd Bush term.

Who wants this?

Who among you can honestly say that the democratic candidate that you don't support would be worse than a 3rd Bush term?

Fight hard for your candidate during the primary season. But when it's over, please take some deep breaths and consider supporting the candidate that the democratic party has chosen.

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence can understand why Obama has to spend
more money on ads than Hillary. He was virtually unknown when he began to run for president. (nationally). She had a double digit lead on him coming into
pennsylvania. He had to introduce himself to the people in that state, Once you get to know Obama, you can't help but like him. Hillary is well known and there fore does not have to spend as much money. The people already know her.
Come on people, use your head for more than a hat rack. Obama will make

And the cool thing is - none of the cash is from special interest groups, PAC's or lobbyists. It's from average Americans giving 5, 20 or $50. What a unique concept - a presidential candidate getting money from people they are elected to serve! The Republicans are drooling at the thought of another Clinton running for pres. Outside of war with Iran, it's the only thing that can unite them. And as we all know McCain is more of the same - 100 years of war and "bomb, bomb Iran". Go Obama!

I too am sick of the "Obama mania". I agree with a previous poster that all of the major media outlets fawn of Obama. All I ever here from him is change. Change what? Where are the speicfics? Everything H. Clinton says and does is disected by the media while it seems to give him a free ride. "The media believes they have leveled the playing field by airing the Wright story and briefly touching on Resko. Furthermore, as a black male, I am tired of the media going-on about Obama has the blac vote.. I wish at some point soon they would survey why this is so. I will vote for Senator Clinton because at least she adds substance to the discussion.

Oh by the way playing the race card. This is always attributed to Clinton by the media. I have yet to witness this. However, I heard the Obama campaign play this card. So much for a color blind society. What is it with the hate of Clinton by ordinary folks and especially by the media. I have often heard tcommentors say that they have heard for viewers that they are excessively critical of Clinton. As soon as they announce this they indignantly claim that this is not the case. Must be nice to have the bully pulpit.

Anyway don't be fooled by the hipye. I takes more that a decent stump speech.

been outlining what he wants to change. If you all would just open your ears
and also your mind, you would understand what the man is all about. Stop
being so dense. You all only hear what you want to hear. If you only listen

distort the news for their own gains. Whether you want to believe it or not,
race has indeed been injected into the campaign to deliberately be divisive.

It's just unbelievable that people here, representing to support the "progressive" position [only defined in crude brush strokes], can say they support HRC over BHO or the reverse, and actually demonize the other; and to the extent of saying they would support McCane over the dem nominee if it be the wrong one. People, please! If HRC is Oakland and BHO is San Francisco, then McCane is in Bangor, Maine, far, far away. Some of you say: nothing changes if HRC (or BHO) is elected. I remind you of the two Supreme Court appointees by the president, Alito and Roberts. If we get one more such appointee to the Court, it will basically be composed much as the 1890 Court that passed (voided) "Plessy vs. Ferguson," extreme pro-business, pro-war, pro-unitary-executive, racist, anti-environmental types. On every issue so far announced, McCane has said he will follow the policies of the current administration. At least either of the dems is very unlikely to do that on some of the issues. Moreover, neither of the dems is likely to populate the entire government with no-nothings whose sole qualification is fealty to The Man. Fight for your candidate, but then, UNFAILINGLY, support the dem candidate.

Remember that there is only two things that are important in the General Election:
1. Stop the War. This one and future wars!
2. Supreme Court. Most of the Supreme Court Justices are very old and we do not need a Republican selecting another Neo-Con, Constitution hating Right Wing Republican to this Court. Look what they have already allowed Bush to do to us.
Get real people. Vote for whomever you want in the Primary season, but come November, remember what is important to our way of life, our very country!
VOTE FOR THE DEMOCRAT!
I am a Liberal! Why aren't you? That is the question to ask. Liberal is not a dirty name and don't let the Right use it against us. Jesus was a Liberal. Give to the poor, take care of the downtrodden, Love your neighbor! Help those in need. Do not judge others

The Democratic Party has taken a sharp turn to the left. We had a decent chance of getting the White House in November this year. Now, there's no hope left. The Democrats, particularly the young (inexperienced) and the elites (ultra liberals) have lost the middle ground of the party's core. We did it to ourselves. The young don't vote. This has been proven time and again. The boomers know that this election is critical. This election will be about character not change. What this country needs is a strong leader, not a talker. All I hear is OBAMA whining or back peddling or spinning. It makes me sick. Who is this guy? Really? Afro-Americans think OBAMA is a new Messiah, the resurrection of Stokely Standiford Churchill Carmichael, a man who coined the phrase---Black Power---and who was referenced in Michelle Obama's Princeton thesis. OBAMA is way too radical for me. I'm gonna have to vote for McCain in November. Everyone I talk to is saying the same thing. The polls are all wrong. Just you wait and see.
