Pittsburgh paper endorses Obama
Barack Obama picked up the endorsement today of one of Pennsylvania's major newspapers.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said Obama and Hillary Clinton are equally prepared to be president and united in their opposition to President Bush's policies. But it is Obama who is the candidate for the future, the newspaper said in urging voters to pick him in next Tuesday's crucial primary.
"Like two opposing armies marching to a new Gettysburg, the forces of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton come to this latest battlefield symbolizing two views of America -- one of the past, one of the future. Pennsylvania Democrats need to rise to the historic moment," the endorsement editorial said.
"The litany of criticisms heaped on Sen. Obama by the Clinton camp, simultaneously doing the work of the Republicans, is as illustrative as anything of which one is which. These are the cynical responses of the old politics to the new. Sen. Obama has captured much of the nation's imagination for a reason. He offers real change, a vision of an America that can move past not only racial tensions but also the political partisanship that has so bedeviled it."
The Post-Gazette is a major media voice in western Pennsylvania, where Clinton so far is polling better than Obama, thanks to the support of blue-collar white voters.

I am extra proud to be a Pittsburgher today.
GO OBAMA !!!!
"He offers real change, a vision of an America that can move past not only racial tensions but also the political partisanship that has so bedeviled it."
Finally, they're getting it. :) I'm a Steeler's fan today! :)
Me too.
That is as good a summary of what I am seeing as any I have read in any paper in the country. Oh, and "bitter"? That means "frustrated and angry". I saw a gas pump with premium for over $4 the other day. Can anyone other than me recall President Bush saying that if oil prices rose he would pick up a phone and call the Saudis and tell them to cool it? How dumb were we to believe that nonsense? So I'd say a lot of us have some reasons to feel somewhat bitter, wouldn't you? People have lied to us, and thought we'd just keep swallowing politicians' lies, over and over and over again. No more.
Perfectly stated:
"The litany of criticisms heaped on Sen. Obama by the Clinton camp, simultaneously doing the work of the Republicans, is as illustrative as anything of which one is which. These are the cynical responses of the old politics to the new." I hope this endorsement helps Obama and he can pull of a victory in PA. Maybe that will be enough to convince Senator Clinton to bow out gracefully.
I am always proud to be a Pittsburgher, but not so proud to be a reader of the PG.
PA has the chance of making a major difference. Show the Clintons that their dynasty does not fit the requirements of a nation that needs to re-group, re-think and re-focus.
It is heart-warming to see the Gazette rise to the occasion. Bravo!!
Good for Pittsburgh - vote for the future with Obama!
Ted in Pitt: I hear you. Spread the word buddy, lets end this thing!
Fair-minded people see the light. Hillary is not evil, see is a Clinton thru-and-thru. Obama is straight. This election is about America's future!
I AM IRISH CATHOLIC WHO SUPPORTS OBAMA BECAUSE HE IS TRULY HONEST . HE WILL LEAD OUR COUNTRY AND THE WORLD TO A BETTER FUTURE.
A sure way to get Mc Cain elected
Endorsement after endorsement, a flood of new energized young voters. Obama is clearly the one with the momentum to carry the Democrats to victory in November. It is up to Pennsylvania voters to put the offical stamp on his campaign and help to unite this party as it prepares to compete against McCain.
Why? Because your an American hating liberal, or that you just want one to become president?
That was a great write up! Excellent way of looking at things, and hopefully it will put this bloody Democratic battle to rest.
I'm so proud of my great city for so eloquently placing this "battle" into perspective!
McCain should have been the endorsement.
Obama is nothing but a well-spoken charlatan. He offers old socialism, old class divisions, old arguments of taxing the rich, old arguments of continuing to prop up social security and ignore foreign matters such as trade and wars we are still in.
He stands for lack of attention, lack of focus, lack of deep conviction, and lack of true character.
There are candidates who are better than the current field, such as Colin Powell and Al Gore and Joe Lieberman. They are not running. Don't make Obama into something he is not. Why give benefit of the doubt in such an important decision?
Thank you Yinzers.
hey Hillary, I hear Mccain has a Vp slot open
Good for you!! Tell it like it is; she is divisive and more concerned about herself then she is concerned about her party. I wouldn't want her on my team, I wouldn't want her working for me, why would I want her leading the free world? Another bullheaded, narrow visioned, "me"-centered politician. No thanks. Let's learn to think big.
Senator Barack Obama a Beacon of Hope. A Uniter. I'm so glad our major Newspaper recognized the true candidate, Senator Barack Obama who can lead this great country to a bright and promising future. Barack is a great leader and I truly believe from the bottom of my heart he can bring us the changes we all are looking for.
God Bless The United States of America, the Home of the Brave.
God Bless Senator Barack Obama, the Beacon of hope.
Vote for Obama '08.
Thank you Pittsburgh.
Barack Obama for President of the UNITED States of America.
I moved out of Pittsburgh 8 years ago for a job in New York, although Clinton is my current senator, I support Obama for the presidency 100%. You made the right choice Pittsburgh Post-Gazette -- Thank you!!
Go Pittsburgh! This Texan is equally proud of the Post-Gazette's clarity & wisdom in endorsing Obama. PA voters, please follow Pittsburgh's choice--Obama for our future.
I second Ted. We need Mr. Obama, now.
I'm from Maryland, although I grew up within bicycle distance to Hanover, PA (and Gettysburg), and my father now lives the Great State. It's up to Pennsylvania to wrap up this nominating contest, so that the entire country can start getting ready to finally start undoing some of Bush's disaster next January. I really hope you guys vote for Barack Obama - Senator Clinton is a fine candidate, and either would be a VAST improvement over Bush, but since she just isn't going to get a majority of the votes, please, Pennsylvania, give a win, any win, to Barack. We're all just counting on you to bring this to a close on a high note.
Thanks, from Maryland.
How pathetic that the paper endorses a specific candidate instead of openly reporting on their respective positions. What a typical working class mentality that you need someone to tell you how to think. You should be proud.
Go Pittsburgh! (waving a towel)
Great Endorsement for a Great Candidate!
Obama 08!
BTW, Yes, I AM bitter!
I applaud the post gazette for its endorsement of Obama. Many see Obama as the future of politics but i liken him somewhat to our founding fathers in that his optimism can be seen as "hot air" but with support maybe he can help restore what was once a government of, by, and for the people.
Dear Friends in Pensylvania,
I can only plead to everyone to cast their ballot for obama. We can't have a president with such a low profile of character...HRC...resorting all the time to negativity to climb up! She is always trying to catalysed on just something to show to the public that she is the right person! Why didn't Obama even bother himself
to try to sink her on her false claim abou the bosnia trip? It proves maturity and charater.
Because of such president in the white The HRC we have lost repect in the world.
Pensylvani go for obama! Thanks and God bless you!
Absolutely spot on. We have the chance to turn the page in this election.
This editorial/endorsement sums it up perfectly. Obama is the future, Clinton is the past. PA voters - take your pick.
I wonder how Clinton and her supporters are going to try an downplay this one.
It worries me everyday that Clinton will get the nomination and that not only will America be left without a choice (again), but this country will be deprived of a once in a lifetime leadership!
Obama is the one to bring our country and the world back together. We must let the fresh reasoning and attitude of Senator Obama continue his journey to bringing back the sense and sensibility of our nation as well as mending damaged relations with the nations of the world that have been so deeply alienated by the present administration.
About time!
your nuts
There you have it folks. The past vs the future. Where do you want to go?
Well done to the PIttsburgh paper for discerning its way past the negative Clinton attacks on a generational change in Democrat politics. No one decries Hillary;s intellect or drive; but her ability to " go nasty" is visible in this campaign. Obama will rescue America's damaged brand abroad; McCain will declare war on Iran - if Cheney doesnt do it before the election to " fix it" for McCain. Obama is the only hope for America being at peace in the next 8 years.

I am so glad to see this. The reasons for their support is aptly and beautifully put. OBAMA!
Awesome!
No more liars in Washington!
To use Gettysburg as a metaphor for a Democratic brouhaha is an insult to those brave Americans who fought and died there. As an ex-Pennsylvania resident who has been to Gettysburg many time and felt the deep emotions associated with that historic venue, I am offended by the association of true heroes with a duet of pretenders to the office of President of the United States of America!
Yes! Come on, Pennsylvania! Time to put this race to a close so Senator Obama can start running against Senator McCain. You can end this with a big win for Sen. Obama on Tuesday! I have lots of family in Pittsuburgh and have spent lots of time there. I am proud of you too!
The tagg "Elitist", was given by Hillary Clinton. So, this has nothing to do with Barack Obama. She has the right to say whatever she want's even with the risk of demeaning herself, but at the end of the day is up to the people to decide. And politics is all about the future and Pittsburgh, Will Not Let America Down.
You weren't proud before?! How unpatriotic!
I am so excited to live in West PA. We can lead the nation with our vote, and I for one lost respect for Hillary when she turned against Obama when he did not choose his words carefully. Hillary has expected us to forgive her instantly when she lied about taking enemy fire in Bosnia, as First Lady. I saw the video of her walking off the plane like Royalty. How can she lie about that, call it a mistake, and then pounce on her democratic colleague for a poor use of words?
I am happy to vote for Obama at this point
The Post-Gazette got it right. Very well said.
Go Pennsylvania! Yes we can!
I hope the rest of the state follows suite and does not get caught in the old school politcal games being offered up as "experience". Who in this country needs more of that same old (tired) stuff (SOS).
Don't buy into the polictics of division folks vote for Change!
And another Media Outlet drinks the Kool Aid.
Obama hates Caucasians and the media thinks that this attitude is ok.
Great job Pittsburgh. My Godson is on the basketball team @ the Univ. of Pitt Austin Wallace, just like Obama he's a great man! Peace and love from ATL!
I'm English, watching all this from afar, like many in the world. Obama really is the best choice America could make. He is a walking PR advert for what is best about the country. After Bush, who could better restore America's image around the world.
This is nothing like Gettysburg.
GO RED SOX!
Remember when newspapers used to report the news? Now it seems they treat us like pawns in their idealistic game. Luckily, most of us are not sheep to be herded into the corrals of complacency.
The Wikipedia article wrote:
Raised in a politically conservative family,[3] she volunteered for Republican candidate Barry Goldwater in the United States presidential election of 1964.[4] Her parents encouraged her to pursue the career of her choice.[5]
In 1965, Hillary Rodham enrolled in Wellesley College. She became active in politics and served as the president of the Wellesley College Chapter of the College Republicans.
VOTE OBAMA 08 YES! THE CHANGE AMERICA NEEDS.
remember when our troops are still in iraq in 2013
The first time in my life you'll find me rooting for Pittsburgh. Very nice article, well written. Lets wrap this thing up Pennsylvania!
Don't be mistaken by all the rah rah of Senator Obama. I am a life long dem, but a cautious one. I don't like what is seeping from around the edges of his candidacy. Be careful you Pens. The devil you get may just be your downfall.
A concerned Nevadan- Kay
Could not have said it bettter. the old politics is fighting the new one Obamacan 08!!!!!!!
Right on---the old guard democrats and the republicans really are pushing for hillary--what will happen to their jobs if Obama gets in-?
Good thing! I'd rather have a slightly arrogant president than a malicious one.
It's a shame a Pennsylvania newspaper does not support the people of Pensylvania after Obama's "slam" on the whole state. Maybe it is because the people running the newspaper are, like Obama, not in touch with the voice of the people.
OBAMA represents the future of America.....McCain and Hillary only offer more of the same failed politics of the past. America is about moving forward, not about taking a step back......
I am extra proud to be a former Pittsburgher! All America is ready to move forward and away from divisive politics of the past 8 dark years of our history. Barack Obama represents a unique and genuine break from the past and who has the best chance to restore America's strength and credibility at home and internationally.
Good for them. Being from New York, I have more confidence in Obama.
I was born, raised, educated, and married in PIttsburgh. I appreciate that the Post-Gazette made their decision by balancing the issues and the character of the candidates. They looked past the transitory political back-and-forth and made an adult decision.
I was one of many in Iowa who thought just exactly what you are saying. I'm so glad to hear that others feel that same surge to the future that many of us did in Iowa. He can speak to so many different groups of people and can lead us in to the futue!
So good to hear this. The state of Pennsylvania holds the keys to our future. Please make a wise choice for our country. God bless.
Hillary Clinton has to understand that we, as Americans, are seeing through her veil of hypocrisy, pettiness, and gutter politics. Enough is enough, let us move forward as Americans and solve the problems that's affecting us. Thanks to the leadership of the Pittsburgh-Post gazette for endorsing the candidate best fit, for bringing true leadership to our beloved country.
Being from Western Pennsylvania I am proud of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in their endorsement of Obama. He is the candidate that has tried to bring a new politics to the race even though the Clinton Campaign in their desperation will do anything to win. When I come back to visit my relatives in PA., I find they are bitter about the way industry has left once prosperous little towns and that the comments that Hillary seems so willing to criticize are correct. Pennsylvanian' s vote for Obama next week and let him get on with fighting McCain and bring about some change in Washington.
The citizens of Pennsylvania have a chance to put and end to Hillary next week. You should take it for the good of the Democratic Party and the United States of America.
you guys hit the nail in the head. It is the past versus future. Same politics against hope for a better America.
I hope you people put Obama on top, and lets go after the republicans.
This country needs a change NOW.
Why is Clinton trying to paint Obama as uppity? Talk about a racist strategy! Who has behaved the most elitist? What a joke to paint Obama as seemingly more elitist than herself. He earned what he has achieved, true grit!
Here in Texas, we are proud of you too! Pennsylvania Democrats can bring us all one step closer to reuniting our country once again.
I am extra proud to be a former Pittsburgher today. Without the change Obama represents, our nation will continue its march to economic and spritual decay.
Gary in Clayton, CA
I am not a Pittsburger, but rather a Tucsonan. (Arizona). But I have felt all along that Obama is the best candidate for my children's generation and then on to our grandchildren's generation. That is why I have supported him since the beginning. Hillary is running for her own ego. Obama is running for change for America.
I've always loved that city. Hope the Post-Gazette view prevails.
Good for them. It is not difficult to see and hear the cynical spinning going on at all costs from Clinton and her so called advisors. If there is a reason to call another candidate elitist, it is purely to try and reach the lowest fears of the electorate. I really hope that Obama and his obviously superior intellectual and diplomatic skills will prevail. The USA desperately needs a statesman to work with the rest of the world.
I like McCain, but I could live with Obama. Hilliary is wrong for America on so many levels. Wanting to be president and being first lady does in no way qualify you to be president.
Hillary consistently speaks of her past accomplishments and leadership experience. If this is true, she should campaign without the support of her husband Bill. Most, if not all women, would've have left their husband for the public humiliation he bestowed upon her by cheating. This is typical "old school" politics, associate with those who can help get you into office regardless of how they might've disgraced you in the past. Obviously, holding public office is more important than one's dignity. We need a change and it's not Hillary.
Better late than never. A vote for either "the Clintons" or McCain is a vote for maintaining the status quo. Obama is a symbol of the hope that many have for change from business as usual in Washington. It should he pointed out again that Obama is running his campaign on the small cash donations from millions throughout the country, not on the tab of corporate donors or lobbyists.
Excellent report, you are seeing what the ordinary people are seeing.
Thank you Phoon Rhee and The Pittsburg Post Gazettte!! What a wonderfully worded endorsement!. You have stated the facts eloquently. Thanks again!! I am looking forward to President Obama's outstanding leadership into a better and more prosperous future. He is the ONLY candidate who can do this!! He comes to us with great inspration, motivation, and hope for much better things to come to America, its citizens, and the world.
Let's pray that the people of PA head your advice.
Not all change is good... I would like to read an article describing exactly what those changes are. My opinion-media and gender bias alive & well.
Clara

I, too, am proud to have been born and raised in Fayette Co, PA.
Betty in Fort Worth
What exactly is that supposed to mean? I thought we had already "moved past" racial tensions... unless you are speaking about inverse descrimination?
Having dealt with many Pennsylvanians, I know that they will rise to be part of this historic vote and support Obama's campaign. Intelligent people are not swayed nor diverted by this media frenzy, and the shark feeding of negative and vicious comments. Thank you Pittsburgh, come and join us, we will work together for America. We will take back the principles on which our country was built and become better.
Excellent point! I just asked a group at tennis this morning, "Will John McCain name Hillary as his running mate?" The Clintons have served this country as a fine back up Republican Party.
I gotta give it to the editors at the Post-Gazette: They are not afraid of backing an underdog, even if that means potentially losing readers. They backed the Republican candidate for mayor against the incumbent last Fall, despite the fact that the mayor was the prohibitive favorite (the Republican candidate ended up losing by over 25 points).
AMEN ! This white, Christian, unemployed senior male living in a small, rural town in a nearly all white rural state couldn't have said it better. GO BARACK "HUSSEIN" OBAMA !!! and GO MICHELLE !!!
i believe in Barack because he is offering something that individuals like myself have been waiting on for many years. people wont vote for him simply because he is black. but he is also white and african. so a vote for him is like a vote for us. US ALL.we cannot allow the past to dictate our future. Hillary and her hubby were in office and for a while then the scandals started. her husband our former president, started having sex with everyone inside of the white house. how could you be so stupid. why would the world give him or her another opportunity to do more damage. i mean come on. Whats up with Nafta..Hillary to me is the one out of touch. she doesnt know what its like in the hood. where crack is sold to put food on the table. where we live pay check to pay check. if u r smart vote Barack Obama
Thank you Post-Gazette for all of the concerned parents and young adults in the world. We need better leaders to lead us away from the past and into the future as we prepare to clean up our spent chances to live in a better world wisely. YES WE CAN. We do not have time to think about skin color or our political affiliations, we must vote for changes across the board. We must demand that people act better when they get elected. We must demand that they be denuded of race, bias and sexism. We must demand that they act for all of us not just a few of us. And we must do it quickly!
McCain all the way
Don't forget, Clinton got the endorsement of the Big Daddy- The New York Times!
OBAMA ON BLACK'S BITTERNESS:
It is justified by slavery.
OBAMA ON WHITE'S BITTERNESS:
It is misplaced!!!
OBAMA ON BLACK'S FAITH:
It provides strength to fight discrimination.
OBAMA ON WHITE'S FAITH:
It is reactionary!!!

I heard Obama's comments as not elitist, but as a poorly worded description of polling data.
In the rural areas, gun control laws, and school prayer restrictions, and easing of immigration laws poll very low in comparison to the neighboring big cities.
Not a debasement of the people, just a statement of fact. He was asked why he is doing so badly in the small town vote. That was his answer.
Move on. He didn't say he was under sniper fire.
I agree with the last comment. I am extra proud to say I am a Pittsburgher today. I want my children to live in a world that tells the truth (don't tell me the Steel Workers are not Bitter... I watched my father swallow bitter tears the day that J&L Steel closed and watched the whole steel industry move to Japan)
I want my kids to grow up in an atmosphere of "Possibility" and not with leadership that spends all of its time trying to catch "The other side" doing somthing wrong.
I dont know how we got to an Obama... but I do know that the air feels a lot more "clean" since he arrived. Bless Pittsburgh and the Post Gazette !!!!!
I'm honestly trying to understand why everyone is so excited about Obama. I swear I am. But when no one ever provides anything concrete other than "symbol of the future" as a reason, I find myself at a loss. With less experience, less known about him and less examples of his leadership skills available for me to read, how can I not vote Clinton? There is this haze of mystery around the man, and no one wants to address it. Instead they fawn over that haze...
Woohoo, Pittsburgh!
Women have struggled for many decades in this country to obtain equal rights and equal pay. I have a hard time understanding how a democratic woman can support a man when Hillary is clearly the proven stronger candidate. Perhaps a blast to the past will wake you gals up?
The term women’s rights refers to the freedoms inherently possessed by women and girls of all ages, which may be institutionalized, ignored or suppressed by law, custom, and behavior in a particular society. These liberties are grouped together and differentiated from broader notions of human rights because they often differ from the freedoms inherently possessed by or recognized for men and boys, and because activism surrounding this issue claims an inherent historical and traditional bias against the exercise of rights by women.
Issues commonly associated with notions of women's rights include, though are not limited to, the right: to bodily integrity and autonomy; to vote (universal suffrage); to hold public office; to work; to fair wages or equal pay; to own property; to education; to serve in the military; to enter into legal contracts; and to have marital, parental and religious rights.[2] Women and their supporters have campaigned and in some places continue to campaigned for the same rights as modern men.
Very clearly and succinctly put. My thoughts in words.. Thank you
Thank goodness they have the sense to see through the smearing, negative tactics of the Clintons. I hope Western Pennsylvanians get it too.
So it really is about Bush, rather than any cogent programs or realistic vision!
Scarey!
Pittsburgh, don't be fooled. Unzip Hillary from the back and you will find George Bush and the same old politics of the past . Those folks will say and do anything, promise anything to get to power. Knocking back a whiskey in a bar with the locals when you make $109 million including some dubious investments doesn't impress me. Having someone tell me to get involved with how my government operates for me does. Oh wait , Hillary is sure to jump on that bandwagon tomorrow.
I heard Obama's comments as not elitist, but as a poorly worded description of polling data.

Chad Noel from Toronto Canada: Throughout my whole life I have always admired and defended the strength and Wisdom of the United States in Canada. Under the administration of president bush it has been difficult. Sen. Obama is by far the best thing that has happened to U.S. in a long time, and Pennsylvania and the rest of the country would be foolish not to change the direction the nation is headed "Pennsylvania elect Obama for president” Renew the hope and faith of people all over the world."
We Clinton supporters aren't going anywhere. While I think both are intelligent, articulate and skilled polititions, there is no question in my mind Hillary is more experienced and prepared, just as there no doubt the pugilistic right much favor Obama for what they believe will be a easy KO. Personally, I'd love to see a combination Clinton-Obama ticket. Until then, however, we'll continue to support a return to a strong and stable economy. Media-based endorsements be darned. I'm proud to be a Clinton supporter.
Slowly, America is finding the courage to walk away from the politics of the past, of fear and cynicism.. towards that of truth, hope and the future.. one step at a time.
Obama 08!
PERSONALLY I DON.T THINK THIS COUNTRY IS READY FOR A BLACK PRESIDENT. WHY/ ? THERE IS TOO MUCH HATE AND BIOGTRY ALSO HATE GROUPS IN THIS COUNTRY.
The editorial seems to summarize what voters like me are beginning to realize-- look at the campaign tactics, the dishonesty, pandering, and inconsistency, and then ask yourself what is our best chance to bring some sense and fairness back into politics and our society.
Thank you for endorsing Mr. Obama. It would be a wonderful thing for Obama to win the Pennsylvania primary and put an end to this increasingly ugly nomination process. Then we could get on with the real job at hand of defeating the Republican nominee and putting America on a new track that will restore our dignity and respect around the world. After all, if we continue to do the same thing we have been doing we can only expect the same results. Come on people of Pennsylvania, do what you know has to be done. The country is counting on you.
What a refreshing view from a leading newspaper. Hopefully, blue- collar workers see the light and support Obama. We are fortunate to have such an insightful and intelligent nominee for President of the U.S. Obama has a rough road ahead but seems to be able to cut his way through all the political nonsense. Let's come together as a party and put our efforts toward defeating the Republicans, not only for the Presidency but Congress as well. Sincerely, Bob and Marian Turner, 72 Utsalady Road, Camano Island, Wa 98282l
You're welcome n' at
This country is on the verge of moving in a direction that maybe unparalleled in the nations history. It truly seems to be a movement...and it's on the horizon.
Obama is the one to bring our country and the world back together. We must let the fresh reasoning and attitude of Senator Obama continue his journey to bringing back the sense and sensibility of our nation as well as mending damaged relations with the nations of the world that have been so deeply alienated by the present administration.
Unfortunately, fewer people actually read newspapers than ever before--including but not limited to blue-collar voters--and fewer still actually base their actions on a journal's opinion. So this endorsement is pretty much irrelevant\.
