Pittsburgh paper endorses Obama

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 16, 2008 09:36 AM

Barack Obama picked up the endorsement today of one of Pennsylvania's major newspapers.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said Obama and Hillary Clinton are equally prepared to be president and united in their opposition to President Bush's policies. But it is Obama who is the candidate for the future, the newspaper said in urging voters to pick him in next Tuesday's crucial primary.

"Like two opposing armies marching to a new Gettysburg, the forces of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton come to this latest battlefield symbolizing two views of America -- one of the past, one of the future. Pennsylvania Democrats need to rise to the historic moment," the endorsement editorial said.

"The litany of criticisms heaped on Sen. Obama by the Clinton camp, simultaneously doing the work of the Republicans, is as illustrative as anything of which one is which. These are the cynical responses of the old politics to the new. Sen. Obama has captured much of the nation's imagination for a reason. He offers real change, a vision of an America that can move past not only racial tensions but also the political partisanship that has so bedeviled it."
The Post-Gazette is a major media voice in western Pennsylvania, where Clinton so far is polling better than Obama, thanks to the support of blue-collar white voters.

  1. That is as good a summary of what I am seeing as any I have read in any paper in the country. Oh, and "bitter"? That means "frustrated and angry". I saw a gas pump with premium for over $4 the other day. Can anyone other than me recall President Bush saying that if oil prices rose he would pick up a phone and call the Saudis and tell them to cool it? How dumb were we to believe that nonsense? So I'd say a lot of us have some reasons to feel somewhat bitter, wouldn't you? People have lied to us, and thought we'd just keep swallowing politicians' lies, over and over and over again. No more.

  1. Perfectly stated:
"The litany of criticisms heaped on Sen. Obama by the Clinton camp, simultaneously doing the work of the Republicans, is as illustrative as anything of which one is which. These are the cynical responses of the old politics to the new." I hope this endorsement helps Obama and he can pull of a victory in PA. Maybe that will be enough to convince Senator Clinton to bow out gracefully.

  1. Endorsement after endorsement, a flood of new energized young voters. Obama is clearly the one with the momentum to carry the Democrats to victory in November. It is up to Pennsylvania voters to put the offical stamp on his campaign and help to unite this party as it prepares to compete against McCain.

  1. McCain should have been the endorsement.

Obama is nothing but a well-spoken charlatan. He offers old socialism, old class divisions, old arguments of taxing the rich, old arguments of continuing to prop up social security and ignore foreign matters such as trade and wars we are still in.

He stands for lack of attention, lack of focus, lack of deep conviction, and lack of true character.

There are candidates who are better than the current field, such as Colin Powell and Al Gore and Joe Lieberman. They are not running. Don't make Obama into something he is not. Why give benefit of the doubt in such an important decision?

I wouldn't want her on my team, I wouldn't want her working for me, why would I want her leading the free world? Another bullheaded, narrow visioned, "me"-centered politician. No thanks. Let's learn to think big.

It's up to Pennsylvania to wrap up this nominating contest, so that the entire country can start getting ready to finally start undoing some of Bush's disaster next January. I really hope you guys vote for Barack Obama - Senator Clinton is a fine candidate, and either would be a VAST improvement over Bush, but since she just isn't going to get a majority of the votes, please, Pennsylvania, give a win, any win, to Barack. We're all just counting on you to bring this to a close on a high note.
    Thanks, from Maryland.

She is always trying to catalysed on just something to show to the public that she is the right person! Why didn't Obama even bother himself
to try to sink her on her false claim abou the bosnia trip? It proves maturity and charater.

No one decries Hillary;s intellect or drive; but her ability to " go nasty" is visible in this campaign. Obama will rescue America's damaged brand abroad; McCain will declare war on Iran - if Cheney doesnt do it before the election to " fix it" for McCain. Obama is the only hope for America being at peace in the next 8 years.

He is the candidate that has tried to bring a new politics to the race even though the Clinton Campaign in their desperation will do anything to win. When I come back to visit my relatives in PA., I find they are bitter about the way industry has left once prosperous little towns and that the comments that Hillary seems so willing to criticize are correct. If there is a reason to call another candidate elitist, it is purely to try and reach the lowest fears of the electorate. 1. Hillary consistently speaks of her past accomplishments and leadership experience. If this is true, she should campaign without the support of her husband Bill. Most, if not all women, would've have left their husband for the public humiliation he bestowed upon her by cheating. This is typical "old school" politics, associate with those who can help get you into office regardless of how they might've disgraced you in the past. Obviously, holding public office is more important than one's dignity. We need a change and it's not Hillary.

In the rural areas, gun control laws, and school prayer restrictions, and easing of immigration laws poll very low in comparison to the neighboring big cities.
Not a debasement of the people, just a statement of fact. He was asked why he is doing so badly in the small town vote. That was his answer.

  1. I agree with the last comment. I am extra proud to say I am a Pittsburgher today. I want my children to live in a world that tells the truth (don't tell me the Steel Workers are not Bitter... I watched my father swallow bitter tears the day that J&L Steel closed and watched the whole steel industry move to Japan)

I want my kids to grow up in an atmosphere of "Possibility" and not with leadership that spends all of its time trying to catch "The other side" doing somthing wrong.

I dont know how we got to an Obama... but I do know that the air feels a lot more "clean" since he arrived. Bless Pittsburgh and the Post Gazette !!!!!

  1. I'm honestly trying to understand why everyone is so excited about Obama. I swear I am. But when no one ever provides anything concrete other than "symbol of the future" as a reason, I find myself at a loss. With less experience, less known about him and less examples of his leadership skills available for me to read, how can I not vote Clinton? There is this haze of mystery around the man, and no one wants to address it. Instead they fawn over that haze...

  1. Women have struggled for many decades in this country to obtain equal rights and equal pay. I have a hard time understanding how a democratic woman can support a man when Hillary is clearly the proven stronger candidate. Perhaps a blast to the past will wake you gals up?
The term women’s rights refers to the freedoms inherently possessed by women and girls of all ages, which may be institutionalized, ignored or suppressed by law, custom, and behavior in a particular society. These liberties are grouped together and differentiated from broader notions of human rights because they often differ from the freedoms inherently possessed by or recognized for men and boys, and because activism surrounding this issue claims an inherent historical and traditional bias against the exercise of rights by women.

Issues commonly associated with notions of women's rights include, though are not limited to, the right: to bodily integrity and autonomy; to vote (universal suffrage); to hold public office; to work; to fair wages or equal pay; to own property; to education; to serve in the military; to enter into legal contracts; and to have marital, parental and religious rights.[2] Women and their supporters have campaigned and in some places continue to campaigned for the same rights as modern men.

Those folks will say and do anything, promise anything to get to power. Knocking back a whiskey in a bar with the locals when you make $109 million including some dubious investments doesn't impress me. Having someone tell me to get involved with how my government operates for me does. Oh wait , Hillary is sure to jump on that bandwagon tomorrow.

Under the administration of president bush it has been difficult. Sen. Obama is by far the best thing that has happened to U.S. in a long time, and Pennsylvania and the rest of the country would be foolish not to change the direction the nation is headed "Pennsylvania elect Obama for president” Renew the hope and faith of people all over the world."

While I think both are intelligent, articulate and skilled polititions, there is no question in my mind Hillary is more experienced and prepared, just as there no doubt the pugilistic right much favor Obama for what they believe will be a easy KO. Personally, I'd love to see a combination Clinton-Obama ticket. Until then, however, we'll continue to support a return to a strong and stable economy. Media-based endorsements be darned. Then we could get on with the real job at hand of defeating the Republican nominee and putting America on a new track that will restore our dignity and respect around the world. After all, if we continue to do the same thing we have been doing we can only expect the same results. Come on people of Pennsylvania, do what you know has to be done. The country is counting on you.

Yet, it is his own views that have been driven by anger (along with the views of his wife and pastor). No person of reasonable intelligence or higher would even consider voting for this anti-American, extreme-left socialist. He is a disgrace to our country and has no business running for this office. Change for Obama means change to "his" way of thinking -- his anti-American, big government, high regulation, socilaistic, proven-to-fail ideas that coincide with people like Bomber Bill Ayers. 1. Senator Obama lterally exudes the qualites necessary to rescue America from the atrocities of Bush and several of his predecessors. Senator Clinton botched Universal Health Care, helped authorize the Bush administrations invasion and occupation of Iraq, and squandered hundreds of millions of dollars on her hapless campaign for the presidency.

America yearns for a new outlook, a compelling outlook, one that favors peace over war and its working people over the giant exporters of jobs and importers of foreign labor. We have had enough of self-centered posturing pols. Please Pennsylvania, cast aside any prejudices you may harbor and cast your votes for America's future by throwing your support to Barack Obama

I, for one, think these people are smart enough to consider that when Hillary is President, her husband Bill will be peddling influence, trading a meeting in the Oval Office for a hefty fee to his foundation. The monies will be sloshed around, enriching the Clintons as they have done these past eight years. No law would prohibit that kind of influence peddling. The smell would be awful. And the good people of Pennsylvania would be long forgotten as the cash pours in.

  1. It is almost a done deal that Republicans are going to win the presidential elections in November and the nation will be subjected to more of "Bushisms" (read: costly war and recession). This was the perfect opportunity for the Democrats to wrestle power from a Republican party that has so many people disgruntled. Instead individual ambitions and greed will cost the party in the end. This battle has gone on for so long that previously moderate supporters of either candidate have now become extremely bitter, which means, depending on whoever wins the nominations, Obama will not get the votes of Clinton supporters come Nov and Clinton will not be voted for by Obama supporters. Oh, and McCain will not be doing much work either. His work has already been done for him, by the DEMOCRATS.

  1. Pennsylvania voters are in a strange position of really considering their options and the biggest consideration is going to be how they wish to see their state in the future and reconcile that vision with what appears to be palpable and observable economic disparity. They will also have to consider, if Senator Clinton absorbes the successes of Bill Clinton as her own, why it is that many regions in the north east did not experience the same level of economic infusion that other states did during Clinton's reign. Voting for what you are familiar and comfortable with may not - in the end - benefit the regions interest. However, it would be nice to hear more from Obama on regional development rather than bitter realities....

Obama did not say or suggest or hint that "WHITE'S BITTERNESS" was misplaced. In a very short paragraph which I am sure your reading skills can digest, he said:

"You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

I even admit to being "bitter":
    > about a justice system that favors the haves and have mores,
    >a congress whose idea of addressing the housing crisis is to give billions to bail out to the fat cats that created the crisis, and little or nothing to the people who are suffering.
    >a candidate who claims to oppose unfair trade but accept $800,000 in speaking fees for her husband to lobby for Columbian "bend-over America, it won't hurt...much" trade agreement.
    >a president who has sent 4000 REAL Americans to die in a war that had nothing to do with actually protecting freedom, but was crucial to assure the $133 billion in profits last year for his fellow Haves and Have-Mores at Exxon-Mobil and the rest.
    >and on and on it goes.

Though "bitter," I still have hope, exemplified by the candidate who respects me enough to speak to me like an adult about race issues. Who is honest enough to say "I screwed up on my choice of words" at a SF fund-raiser. Who has the guts to stand up against the "sound-biters" and "spin doctors" who want to sucker punch us with "reforms" that are actually only shams to make the fat-cats fatter at the further expense of the rest of us.

I am proud of the Post-Gazette and proud to be a son of Pittsburgh. Most of all I am proud to support the man that, for the first time since JFK, gives me confidence and hope that Americans can pull together for a better future.

  1. As an Asian American's shared perspective, the move of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to endores Sen. Obama is obviously to demonstrate its solidarity aligned with the people of State of Penn about the candidate that they can count on, who will not only stand up for the old Washington guards but also will be able to unify the country with a new and better direction. Even though he may not have had as much as practical and foreign policy experiences in comparison to Sen. Clinton's inflated phony one during her trip to Bosnia, but he has shown us with wise judgment and has also shown us with very fine leadership qualities and integrity.

Since the inception of primary election neither Sen. McCain nor Sen. Clinton provoked to share about how people in small towns in State of Penn have faced for a few decades such as bitterness resulted from economics hardship that has caused from Washington's failed free trade policy. Why has it taken so long for them to talk about it? Only Sen. Obama took his leadership to expose to the public about " people's bitterness". I think because she does not want people to view her husband's failed free trade policy with a strong bipartisan support in free trade deal, including Sen. McCain nor does he want people to view that. I am so grad that Sen. Obama able to speak of the truth and fact about people's bitterness during economic hardship to the public otherwise Washington policians have never awaken about the consequences of the free trade deal caused hundred thousands or million of jobs shifted oversea.

Go, go, go, go Sen. Obama. I stand with you and I cheer you.

I know one person is not going to solve this.. the question is who can set the tone ? Who has the temperment (many of Sens Clinton and O'Bama's ideas are the same)...

  1. Negative ads and attacks towards Obama and Clinton have divided us over the past several months. This can only benefit John McCain.

But we don't have to wait for a Democratic candidate to be chosen to unite ourselves as voters. We can support our preferred candidate AND remain united.

We are a very large group of very diverse people who I believe want good things for this country and our world. But this very diversity is being used to divide us. Remember that WE have the power because WE are the voters. The more united we are, the more powerful we become. Division only weakens us right now.

And I definitely don't want another 4 years that comes anything close to what we've just experienced.

Whether you support Clinton or Obama, let's unite for the bigger goal in 2008.

  1. Obama is not even in the same ballpark to actually play Commander in Chief. There is a military culture that he, as well as many other Civilian leaders throughout history thinks they can bend, then break this time honored and proven way. They all have failed miserably. Without the respect that is earned not voted on, he will get nowhere. Commander in Chief is the primary job title of being President, so he is not worthy of the title.

I will give him respect to hold the job title of Socialist Cultural Change in Charge … this one he has earned the right to bear. This rookie who finds as many before him, it is easy to make promises, but to keep them takes the power to do so. The President does not possess such power, as he does not make law, so the promises are veil in substance, and bait for the uninformed voter.

  1. I am a New Yorker who lived in Pittsburgh for almost twenty years. I still remember the divide of Pittsburgh communities, brought together only by an atmosphere of Super Bowl championships courtesy of the Pittsburgh Steelers and it’s beloved owner, Dan Rooney. I have visited Pittsburgh a half dozen times since I left in 1987. In that time, I have seen the town slowly recapture the upward swing that declined after the death of the great Mayor Richard Caliguiri. So it is fitting that Pittsburgh move back to the future by supporting a candidate who: represents change; challenges you to look inside yourself and at the truth even when the truth hurts; who will not say the easy thing or do and say anything just to get elected; who admits he is not perfect; who acknowledges it is not going to be easy to change the old ways of those in Washington who have been in charge (to the detriment of the citizenry) for decades; and who does not use personal attacks as a winning strategy but rather takes the high road of dignity, thoughtfulness, and unity. If we trust Dan Rooney’s lead once again, the entire country will win the Super Bowl with Team Obama in the White House

Its a bad idea and I'm not voting for two people that don't understand what going on with the world and truely take president bush spot. I believe someone like president bush, a true christian should president this country. Even if he sent our boys and girls to the war in Iraq and stupid stuff like that...but isn't it getting better now! If we cut off the boys and girls that are fighting in the war and tell them to come home, we have no idea if the iraqes would maybe do worst back to us. I dont know....thats what i feel.

  1. Foolish. Pure nonsense.

The man is preaching what the masses want to hear -- not what he truly represents nor what he would actually accomplish in office. The only change you get with this candidate is one of extreme socialism and greater taxation. Does anybody remember the recession of the 70's? Obama's policies are no different than those of Carter -- we will only suffer a greater economic slowdown!

Please -- none of the candidates are ideal; but, the paper should not be endorsing any candidate without spelling out the actual principals they represent and their stance on the issues. Obama is for: higher taxes; bigger government; more government oversight; etc.

Be thoughtful here! Vote on issues, not catch-phrases!

  1. People need to find out what issues are important to them and then vote for the best candidate who will solve that issue for them. Don't vote for the woman, the black or the white guy just because of their gender or race. Vote for the best person for the job! The entire job not just domestic policy or foreign policy or what they say they will do. Don't vote with the hype. Do your own research and figure out what is best for you. Anyone who runs for president knows what they are doing and knows it's not an easy job. No where in the constituion does it say how much experience is enough to be president. Just because a newspaper or someone else supports someone doesn't mean you have to as well. It's time for people to get their heads out of their behinds and think for themselves.

Democratic Voter registrations have broken records in all the states he's campaigned in -- Did Hillary do this? Can she rally the Demoncratic voters to go to the polls? Can she reach the young adults out there who agree with Obama's ideas and see the same 'old' government doing the same 'old' thing? Well .... if its going to be the same 'old' thing -- then the White House will remain in the Republicans hands. I'm Republican and not too happy with the party's decisions, but would stay with them if Obama is not Democratic Nominee. Why? Because Hillary will mean 'no change' -- she is the Elitist -- She's cares about no one else and needs to earn her votes and not think they country owes her like her husband thinks. I was a Clinton supporter before, she is a very intelligent person, but the way she indulges to get elected turned me off. Lies and phoney, etc., really changed my mind. My parents who lived in Pennsylvania had also supported her strongly, but having analyzed both of them carefully, have also decided that Obama is the better person, who seems more honest and wants to do something for the country and the people, My father(who is white) thinks that the country needs someone like Obama and now he will vote for him. 1. Most of the decisions a president makes are neither liberal or conservative - matters like awarding gold stars, preparing for the national defense, or for today's example, welcoming the Pope, etc. Therefore the key factors should be honesty, courage, decency, and intelligence, along with a little experience.as well. (As an aside the first Bush had plenty of the latter, and was a flop.) Obama is far above either Clinton in all that really matters.

  1. 'The litany of criticisms heaped on Sen.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This article to typical of modern newspapers not much fact but lots of adjectives. Notice how they say a 'litany of crticisms heap on Sen Obama'

Also notice the word cynical response----- sound like the write of this editoral is sinical...

The author of the editoral has created this divide that I don't see between the new and old. Obama base is about change I think he is just better at covering his slick tracks.... He took lots of money from his state senatorship when he was elected, what about Rezko, what about wright and meek. Does not look like change but more of the same as the Bush Administration.

  1. I believe unequivocally that Sen. Obama is the best candidate for our next President. However, there is a long road ahead should he be elected. Releasing the country from the "fell clutch" of an economy in decay and an unpopular and unwanted war will not happen on inauguration day. The true measure of his success will not be merely to introduce change but to actuate it. While he is clearly what this country needs, I hesitate to call him the savior of our republic - as yet.

How can I even begin to trust that what I read in that paper is unbiased?? He's more unqualified and unprepared to be presdient of the United Staes and leader of the free world than any major candidate in recent memory. Serving in the state senate of Illinois does not exactly set you up to tangle with the Vladimir Putins of the world. And he's going to lead us past all the racial divisions nonsense---c'mon people. Just listen to the good Rev. Wright his pastor for the last 20 years to get an idea of Obama's "color blindness". Makes Al Sharpton sound like a voice of reason. This must say something about the readers of your newspaper when a candidate who has so little to offer on issues is selected over a candidate of experience.

While Barack Obama missed 38% of his votes in the 110th Congress, and Hillary Clinton missed 23% of her votes, he is the preferred candidate? In Illinois, he voted present on issues that might hurt his political future.

When you compare the modern infrastructures in Europe - high speed trains, modern aeroports, universal health care much cheaper than ours, etc, with the ones in the USA, it makes me think that we are doing way too many things wrong... like throwing the money we need at home in a war we never needed. I hope Obama can be the man to put back the USA on the right track. Anyway he can't do worse than the current guy in the White House. Go Obama!!! You got my vote.

The politics of old has never given the average American respect in regards they appear to believe that Americans are unable to see past the veiled arrogance that they (the old politicians) must speak for Americans in relation to the "bitter" statement, among other things, that Obama recently made. He is simply telling it like it is. In essence, give the American people credit for being smart enough to think for themselves. Silly politics have no place in a new style of politics and a new manner of thinking as a whole for Americans.

The who idea of fabricating to go to war because of this. I totally agree with son of Braddock as follow: "That is as good a summary of what I am seeing as any I have read in any paper in the country. The country is polarized as never before. What is happening now? More of the same. The country is polarized as 90% of African Americans have flocked to Mr Obama as never before. Is this the real change your editorial endorsemet is about? Don't you see that Mr Obama is of the Arican Americans, by African Americans and for African Amerincans. Mr Obama can fool some of the people all the time, all the people some of the time but not all the people all the time with his rhetoric and preacher-like oratory. He may sail through, God forbid, the Democratic primary but not in the general election against a solid cadidate like Mr Mc Cain. Only Mrs Clinton, with her solid experience, has a chance to restore a Democrat in the White House.

Sounds great til you actually start living it and realize that it's short-sighted, pie in the sky, and just literally ignores the logistics and costs of all the beautiful pictures that he's trying to paint. He is concerned about those people and wants to help them. He is frustrated that they may not understand his message. McCain and Clinton seem to pretend that there are no people who are bitter about their lives and government's policies. An elitist would not waste time thinking about the "little people", but Obama does think about them. Sure his words were poorly chosen (a rarity for him, unlike our current President!). Look at Hillary's background...and then Obama's. THINK ABOUT IT.. Who is the elitist? Time for a new sheriff, I think! Vote Obama!

  1. I believe Hillary is just as much as the future as Barack, AND to me she has the depth, intelligence, experience, sensitivity, compassion and fortitude that make her more qualified for the presidency than Barack. Yes he's young, articulate, and can give a good speech, but I just don't think he's ready at this point in time to meet the demands and challenges of the job he's applying for. Just my two cents.

  1. The ad that Obama wouldn't do:.....Hillary, telling her Bosnia story, 3 different venues, fresh as a daisy in yellow uniform...pan to video of ceremonial event on Tarmack in Bosnia where children give gifts calmly to Hillary, daughter Chelsea next to her. News media, band playing, no one running or frightened. Pan to Bill Clinton retelling what we already know is not true...."Hillary misspoke late at night one time, and she apologized right away, you would think she robbed a bank"....
Pan to dramatic stories of woman's tragedy and hospital story, told over and over for political gain...then the news clip of how that was not really true, no one checked out the story before she used it in speeches over and over. At the end of the ad, Barack Obama says "I could have better phrased my statement, I may have misspoke, but I didn't lie."

Obama did not run that ad. He had faith that America got it, and he promissed to run a better campaign. He is the future and has stayed above the fray. He makes me proud and I am so proud of Pennsylvania.

    Thanks Pennsylvania.

  1. 150 years ago a young inexperienced Illinois lawyer with no Washington experience began a series of debates on the future of the republic. If America had not been impressed by his words neither Barack Obama nor Hillary Clinton would be in the position to even vote much less run for President. For that matter John Mcain would not be the candidate for "The Party of Lincoln". I trust the citizens of the great state of Pennsylvania to recognize integrity despite slander and vote for the future.

  1. When you elect a president you elect a group of people not one person. Who are you voting for? Why is it that all the media talks about is who said what and very little about who will be a part of the staff or advisers. How about their philosophy or plans. That is what got us in trouble with Bush and now the consequences will be with us for generations. When the person is sworn in the first thing that happens is they are briefed by the Pentagon, CIA. FBI, NSA and a dozen other powerful and influential agencies led by people who have often been ensconced for years. Unless you are elected with an established network and heavy political influence you will find your self stymied at every turn. Look at Bill Clinton's first year in office. Until the agencies involved and the congress got his administration saddled and the so called conservatives attacked on every front we all had Hi hopes that were wasted. Thank You Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Now lets go after some Senators and Representatives who need to take a permanent vacation to their second homes in the Caribbean.

  1. Good for you! As an American living abroad for the past 25 years, I'll be able to stand tall again once Obama is in the White House. My European friends and I can hardly wait for the sea change that he will bring to Washington and the world.
As a former Pennsylvanian (born in Reading), I'm confident that the majority of Keystonian Democrats will, once again, make the founding fathers proud by
voting for a man who not only displays their eloquence, but has their vision and integrity as well.

Posted by Dr. Michael Shalter April 16, 08 12:15 PM
  1. Thank you, Post Gazette, for endorsing Obama. Please, Pennsylvanian voters, end the Clintons' destructive, hypocritical, and divisive attacks next Tuesday, April 22. By voting for Obama, we as a nation can move this election process forward instead of backward. Even if Clinton wins Pennsylvania and somehow manages to browbeat superdelegates into siding with her, the majority of the country will not vote for her in the general election.

Also, when it comes to electability, be aware that the Clintons (Bosnia sniper fire liars; NAFTA sell-outs; $109 million-dollar hypocrit elitists who still have not revealed their 2007 tax records; and Bill's impeachment, lies and numerous sex scandals) are DEFENDENTS in a 4-year-postponed California fraud trial that will begin a mere 3 days after the PA primary. The press has so far remained silent on this pending fraud trial, but it will essentially give McCain everything he needs to secure his bid for the White House. McCain would clearly prefer HRC as an opponent in the general election rather than Obama.

Should you not take advantage of this opportunity to make Obama the Democratic nominee, welcome to four more years of economic woes, ongoing military losses, and no clear end in sight under a McCain (aka Bush & company) administration.

The election is now in your hands, Pennsylvania, so please vote wisely. A vote for Obama is a vote for unity and real change.

  1. I can't wait to see what all of your blame it on when Obama gets elected and things still suck for everyone and continue to get worse. The problems we have in this country are not based on the good or bad performance of any one president (granted GWB certainly isn't helping much and we could have done without the war,) they are tied to the fact that people have an entitlement mentality. Somehow we're led to believe that it's our birthright simply by being americans to inherit prosperity, and that if someone else has more than we do, they should slice it up and give us some regardless of whether or not we've done anything to deserve it. That's not how america became so prosperous to begin with, and demanding a leader who will 'share the wealth' with everyone isn't going to make it any better. Eventually people will stop trying to out produce eachother if all that comes of it is a seizure and division among the public (insurance, 'economic stimulus', bailouts for companies that are supposed to die) and will instead start to imagine that they're the one's who should be taking from the public purse instead of giving to it. After all, if the rewards are the same for being a producer as they are for being a lazy consumer, then why bother producing? In real life, nobody owes you a 'job' they only owe you the right to try and find one for yourself. If your industry can't compete with China for manufacturing, you're in the wrong business, PAL. Until people take responsibility for their own lives, no president, especially no populist leader, as Obama claims to be, will EVER make our issues and pains go away. They will only get worse. Turn the page indeed. Well, hopefully, if you hate me for saying it now, you'll remember I've said it when it turns out that Obama didn't make it all better.

  1. Who cares if someone is a liberal? I consider myself a liberal, but let us inspect the definition of the word.

    1. favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.
    - Yes, I am open to reform. Are you happy with how things are?

    2. favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties
    - Yes, I would like to have my rights back. Don't think your phone isn't getting tapped every now and then. Enough with the scare tactics used by the current administration to trample our rights to privacy and property. GWB should be impeached or brought up on war crimes internationally for what he has done.

    3. favoring or permitting freedom of action, esp. with respect to matters of personal belief or expression
-Yes. Whatever happened to the seperation of church and state? If the right has it their way, you won't have a choice in the matter of abortion, and they cling to religion to dissuade the use of stem cells to cure diseases that effect all of us black, white, Democratic, or Republican.

    4. of or pertaining to representational forms of government rather than aristocracies and monarchies
-Yes, I want change. McCain is Bush for another 4 years and voting for Hillary will lead to a Bush/Clinton as head of our government since 1989. That would be 20 years plus.

    5. free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant: a liberal attitude toward foreigners.
-Yes. This is a country of all people, and it will take us all to respect each other to move forward. Those old elephants will have you believe it is their country, but they don't ever think of their family as one time immigrants seeking a place of freedom and a chance.

    6. open-minded or tolerant, esp. free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, etc
-Yes. Traditional thinking by old minds has done nothing but corrupted our government with the help of powerful lobbyists given their utter lack of purpose or vision. Why change the way they do things if they stand to benefit?

Lastly, look at our economy. This was brought to you by "fiscally responsible" republicans. I find it ironic that the only times we did not have a deficit was when a democrat was in office. So much for the "tax and spend" rhetoric the right wants you to believe. Go Obama! The Donkeys are coming to kick some real asses out of office and we're going to have a majority in both the house and Senate that will allow us to bring the change that is needed, currently it is just not enough of a majority to really move forward.

PS - Supreme Court Judges aren't getting any younger, don't leave it up to the current establishment to fill any more of those seats.

But when no one ever provides anything concrete other than "symbol of the future" as a reason, I find myself at a loss. With less experience, less known about him and less examples of his leadership skills available for me to read, how can I not vote Clinton? There is this haze of mystery around the man, and no one wants to address it. Instead they fawn over that haze.."

The reason you don't understand is because you have not done the research for yourself but instead have chosen to allow Hillary to be a point of reference which is no different than trusting Pinocchio to tell you the truth.

The facts about both Hillary & Obama can be found at the library of congress Tomas http://thomas.loc.gov/ There you will find who sponsored or voted for what and how many times. This information is very telling because it gives the voter a true understanding of what the candidates interest are.

Obama's history of voting as well as his choices in life have proven to many that he indeed is the more qualified. I have learned that Hillary who altho has been around longer Has done much less in terms of relevance in a given time frame than Obama. Niter of the two was ever a governor but as senators Obama actually has more experience. If your trying to include first lady experience thats fair but you need to prove that as a first lady she actually did something. This is where things start to get interesting. Hillary claims that she helped to create programs such as NAFTA, Child care and her attempt at Socialized Healthcare. So i did some research and found that the only thing she actually did was healthcare reform which was a huge failure. as for "NAFTA" I believe she was against it but at the same time she did not create it she just backed it. And child care? well she had absolutely nothing to do with it she just likes to say she did. The truth is that after her failed attempt at healthcare reform she was restricted to the role of first lady which means she went around naming things, acknowledging accomplishments and having tea parties with foreign leaders. This is not experience. Now factor in that Obama chose to be a civil rights lawyer as opposed to being a defense lawyer (Hillary's choice) you can see that this man is more interested in changing the world than fattening his pockets.

Also how can people ignore Hillary's lies? if obama were to lie about sniper fire or the placement of his wife jogging around the world traid centers during 911 in his book this campaign would be over. Its really amazing to me how Hillary tells lie after lie & is still in the race.

pleas do your research on Hillary b4 you vote against Obama.

Look i liked Bill too before i learned the truth.

BTW I'm an american but not in the US so i don't even get to see things like national debates except in small you tube snips so i must do the research on my own. This is why i know for a fact that you & many others like you are just being ignorant of the truth and then saying you can't find anything. You can always check resources like Wikipedia and then the library of congress to confirm the facts or you can even call one of Obamas hotlines.

Here is a good question; What has hillary done of relevance? I actually know but do you?

  1. Senator Barack Obama, indeed, represents the future. We have to move beyond the dynasties such as Bush the father, Clinton, George W.Bush, and Clinton? No way Jose. HRC represents the the old Washington politics. We need a leader with vision. Barack Obama is the change we need away from the Washington establishments. Thank you Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for endorsing Senator Barack Obama for the next President of the United States.

  1. Maybe we the people are ready for an honest man to lead us?? Being a truthful politician has always been political suicide in a presidential race (remember Mo Udall?). Why else are they famous for double speak and non-denial denials?

ENOUGH! Let's read and listen to the real words from this man, not the "spin" from his opponents, and then DECIDE for OURSELVES!!

    If not now -- WHEN?

I'm a 60 year old white man from the south and I support Barak Obama!

  1. What a shocking disappointment. I am a democrat who thought that there was no way our party could lose the general election... but - AGAIN - the MSM has glorifed the wrong candidate while demonizing our best hope. The bias for Obama has been disgusting and disturbing in the MSM. I want to thank ABC for addressing the issues in the debate that the MSM was trying to brush aside. Unless something huge shifts, it looks like the dems are going to be stuck with an unelectable candiate. Obama has more than offended our country by going to a church for 20 years that spews hatred for the US. And his wife never having been proud before of our country. And now Obama is telling small town people that they cling to guns and God only out of economic frustration and bitterness? EEK! This guy is scary. I will vote against my party - for McCain if Obama is the other choice.

  1. So proud of Pittsburgh, but so sad for #280, whose comments show she hasn't even listened to the 45 minute tape of Obama's fundraiser in SF, or she'd know that he was championing working people everywhere by ALL he said there! Obviously, Scary hasn't listened to even one of his former minister's original (entire) sermons, or the complete video of Michelle Obama's speech either, or she'd see that this stuff has been so badly misrepresented it's a sin! That's the politics of old though..Republicans peddle lies and garbage to bring down their opponent, becaue they have nothing of worth to tell us about themselves..that's all that's left to them. Apparently, the Clintons have climbed on that bus, as well.

Since Bill brought it up again today, Hillary called herself the "Senator from Punjab" at an Indian fundraiser, and her (co-founded) Senate India Caucus has been responsible for thousands of jobs filled here by foreigners with the LEGAL visas she's championed for them. H&B are paid millions in speaking fees and contributions by large outsourcing companies (the Indian press loves B&H) and Bill is a paid (3.3mil) advisor to one of them, InfoUSA. Yes, I'm bitter, as my job is one of millions sailing down the Ganges River. Enough hypocricy. Obama 08!

  1. Poor Dave #248..No one is asking for a handout! What we need is for someone to take the wrench out of the gears, though!! This is the country that put a man on the moon, and was responsible for practically everything that represents a technological advance for society! Good Lord..can't "compete with China" ? They make garbage in sweat shops..no quality control, no standards in manufacturing..they poison our kids and our pets..and us..and you're OK with this? You must be making a lot of money on the Chinese..one of those elitist opportunists who works on Wall Street, to say a thing like that..part of the Me, Myself, and I Club! Shame on you! Check back this time next year, and we'll see how "bad" a job Obama's doing, my friend!

  1. No man should tell a woman that she should vote for Hillary. What kind of stupid thing is that to say. She can't even manage her own budget and she's a flat out liar. Perhaps the people who support her like that kind of nasty, mudslinging campaign. The need to do that highlights the fact that she has no real experience doing anything BUT having tea with dignitaries. As a woman, I will voted for the candidate who had goodness in his heart and the fact is that he is simply smarter and displayed through out the campaign. Ill behavior draws negative results. I guess some people never learn that lesson.
