Pushing the 'dream ticket'

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 7, 2008 10:25 AM

It's looking more and more like wishful thinking the way the race is going.

But those Democrats who pine for the so-called dream ticket of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton now have somewhere semi-official to go on the web.

A group calling itself Democrats United for Clinton/Obama 08 launched a website today where like-minded partisans can sign an electronic petition to the Democratic National Committee urging an unity ticket. The group was founded by a former Clinton staffer, which explains why she is atop the proposed ticket.

When Clinton and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, publicly suggested the possibility last month as a way for Democrats to support both her and Obama, Obama quickly quashed the entire premise, pointing out that he leads in delegates and popular vote and it was rather presumptuous of the candidate in second place to promote such an idea.

  1. Yes, it seems that together they hold the majority of people's interests at heart. If the messeage of change and unitity is real, this is the solution. I like that the extended campaign has taken them into smaller states, interacting with more people one on one. There is real hope for a unitied government if they listen to the people and let go of the ego's.

  1. Why is this news as opposed to free advertising for the democrat party? What you call a "dream ticket" would be a nightmare for America . Clinton and Obama are nothing but incompetent socialist trash who, despite attending law school, have no respect for the Constitution (which...sports fans...was neither written by nor inspired by karl marx). These two incompetents run around yelling "the sky is falling" while changing their positions on the issues in daily response to the latest headline, and there are cattle out there who follow these two charlatans as though they were competent candidates. People, particularly liberals, need to take a hard look at the issues and look for real answers, not brainless "hope slogans" or votes based upon race or gender. While I do not like McCain, the idea of a Pelosi/Reid Congress unchecked by a "dumb and dumber" Clinton/Obama White House spells disaster for the nation. How is it that a nationof 350,000,000 people cannot come up with a competent presidential candidate?

  1. Please no Dream Ticket, it's way to fun watching these two rip into each other. The longer this goes on the more these two will show reveal to the country who they really are.

  1. Why would it be a Clinton/Obama ticket? Obama is winning the nomination so far.

If it is anything, wouldn't it be a Obama/Clinton ticket?

  1. CLINTONS have no value for VOTERS. Just like they betrayed Bill Richardson after all LATINOS VOTED for them, they will CHEAT all the voters. Look they are still looking for Obama to be VP and CLINTON to be President of SEX, LIES, SCANDALS.

  1. These two have the shortest resumes for president that I've seen since being of voting age. Maybe the shortest resumes ever. Maybe someone could explain how combined it is a dream ticket, because it seems very dangerous to me. This is an important job they a running for. People should take it serious.

  1. Voters have no proper business pressuring whether by petition or some electoralte "campaigning." Simple suggestions via appropriate venues could be helpful and informative.
    1. VP should be selected by the nominee independently. He/she must have the option of choosing someone whom they wish to partner and work very closely with, above all whom they trust to partner as well philosophies and temperament, balance of expertise and vision, etc.

    2. The respective politial parties undoubtedly will and do claim excessive influence on the VP choice: electability, special interests, PACs , favors owed, party fund-raising, demographics, etc. Very complex balancing among party leaders.

    3. "A heartbeat away" from the president: qualifications including effective transitioning in the event a VP needs assume the presidency.

Personally, I believe that neither Barack Obama nor Hillary Clintion, despite their abilities and talents, would or could be truly most effective in a Pres-VP-Pres capacity with each other, regardless of who's #1 or #2. Simply put, in a myriad critical ways, they are just not "on the same page," as they say. That should be abondantly clear to any sincere and critical-thinking voter who has been closely following and honestly evaluating these two candidates. There is too much at stake for the next 4-8 years and beyond.

Just read a few random blogs and the preponderance of ignorance and irrationality. The cyberspace and mass media arena has nurtured a significant part of the populace to "cast votes" on impulse with a few finger strokes for any and anything: entertainers, baby names, game contestants, legal verdicts of alleged criminals without proper evidence, legislation without intelligent and appropriate education of the issues, etc.

Everyone's entitled to his opinion; this does not mean all opinions are of equal value or validity.

  1. To have an Obama/Clinton ticket could really be quite amazing. After 8 years of Cheney running the country with Bush as the strong willed figure-head, it would be amazing for Hillary Clinton to assume those newly forged implements of power and organization. And with Obama as President the Executive Office might actually bring people together rather than another term of stubborn "I'm right now do what we say". Quite the 1-2 punch.

  1. McCain has shown who he is over the years, but the press is currently giving him a pass so many of his supporters don't really know. Some of them don't even recognize that his jokes about bombing Iran, criticizing the civilian leadership for not being harsh enough in dealing with the "gooks" of VietNam or staying 100 years in Iraq show him to be a warmonger. He even gets belligerent with people who disagree with him. He is an ignorant hotheat who has no business having his finger on the button, and "experience" and aging haven't increased his qualifications. He is proof that temperament is more important than experience.

  1. To whom is this a dream ticket? I wouldn't vote for Clinton in a million years, so why would I want her on the ticket as VP? Obama has an great opportunity to select someone solid who can round out his ticket - it would only be wasted on Clinton.

  1. There is no hope for the Dems this fall unless the Audacity of a Dope candidate sits in the driver ed seat for the Presidency and teams with Clinton. As much as the electorate is fed up with Bush, the general public are not fed up with the Republicans. The Republicans have put up a moderate against the Dems this year. If Obama, the most liberal and inexperienced senator we have has the lead on the ticket, the Dems will go down in defeat. The radical change wing in the Dem party doesn't appeal to the vast moderate centrist values.

So if you ever want to see Obama as President, you need to hope he he sees the light and understands his current primary excitement wont role over to the more pragmatic mainstream voters in the general election.

  1. Only trouble is that neither of them would genuinely want the other as VP. While candor, authenticity, genuineness doesn't appear to be a major concern all around, it IS part of Obama's appeal.

It is part of his avowed value system. Add to that a question of whether the Clintons would actually pass an ethics test according to standards Obama wants for government.

Would they? I don't know because I don't think values get suspended for campaigning. i think values get revealed in campaigning.

I'd rather whichever one of them doesn't become the candidate would go back to the Senate and attend to business while the dusts settle. Either way, the Democrats have the stronger candidate.

  1. Dream ticket...Yeah we're all dreaming. These two characters are the least thing this country needs. Neither party will fix the real issues facing this country. The middle class is overburdened. Inflation and taxes have taken its toll on the hard working middle class American people. Listen, this country is slowly bleeding to death and no one wants to address those issues. Can anyone see that this country is run by rich and wealthy corporations who lobby to our so called reps to suck the hard earned money from the middle class and poor. The problems are there. plan for everyone to see. As are the solutions. Until the people stand up and take back this country, nothing will change. Not even Hope or a Dream ticket will help.

  1. My fear is that Obama may be holding out for an Obama/Wright ticket or worse still an Obama/Farrakhan ticket. Obama seems to have no spine, so we need someone to keep him in check as to whom he choses for his mentors. Why do the Obama people think that the spectre of infidelity is worse than thespectre of anti-semitism?

  1. Dear Marc Christophe,
So you don't believe in the Government helping the less fortunate? I am assuming you are a Libertarian and would like to privatize everything? Why was the New Deal put in place? It was to provide relief, reform, and recovery to the people and economy of the United States during the Great Depression. The New Deal substantially improved thousands of lives under this program and possibly got the country out of the Great Depression. You would call this a Socialist program wouldn't you? Please tell me what Libertarian alternative would have helped Society. Oh wait..Libertarian's don't like to help society, they believe in the Power of the Individual and only the Individual. That is a cold and scary belief. Humans need to work collectively as a group and support one another don't they?
Hopefully you or no one in your family will not become laid off in the Future during this slow economic durn turn. And hopefully you don't liquidate all your Retirmement assets, because if you don't believe in Social Programs, then you wouldn't believe in Unemployement checks. I guess there is always working at McDonalds.

  1. This is akin to sci-fi fans wishing for crossover stories between their favorite series. It's fantasy. Well intentioned, but fantasy.

This proposal for a joint ticket completely ignores the real questions about interpersonal dynamics and political intentions of these two Senators and their advisors.

Just for an example, those who want Hillary to top a joint ticket, ask yourselves , "How much weight would any VP's opinion have when Bill is down the hall?"

  1. I don’t think Clinton supporters (and Hillary) get it. There is a significant trust issue. People do not trust her addiction for power. She is a cancer to keep away from the white house. I am an independent who would vote for Obama (a people’s president, not a constituent one) and against Hillary; including if she were the VP. I do not want to vote for McCain but will choose the lesser of two evils.

  1. BEWARE VOTERS! Any "Push for a Dream Ticket" --

is falling for a very dirty S -T- R -A -T -E- G -Y to DILUTE and interfere with the important remaining Dem primaries. It was first floated 48 hrs. before the OHIO and TX Dem primaries -- DO recall only HRC dropped so called "hints" to the media, and nourished this option and actually raises this option as a planted question in the mouth of an someone in the audience. I know for a fact that her aides/volunteers have requested audience members to ask "pre-determined questions."
Until the actual Dem nomination, voters should not be manipulated by this diversion tactic. It suggests underneath it all that the remaining primaries [PA, IN, WY MT, NC, PR, OR etc] don't really matter, aren't important , someone will win! IT DOES MATTER WHO WINS THE NOMINATION.

By now, the Republicans have learned to use/ABUSE this DT strategy well for their purposes - influencing , even determining who McCain will run against. It's all over talk radio & the media -- telling Republicans switch to Dem party to vote for X or Y. Several hundred thousand voters have done so. Don't let yourself or friends be exploited as a pawn for agendas you may not even perceive.

People also have no idea who else will recognize the value of this DT effort to serve their own agenda. Just vote for the candidate of your choice and wait till the nomination...

  1. Clinton and Obama make sense. First let me say I've been an Obama supporter all along.

I suddenly realized that this is the Republican strategy. Without sounding paranoid I would that there are republicans working for both campaigns.

Clinton Obama ticket would be an absolute nighmare for the republicans. And it would completely turn the tables on their divide and conquer strategy.

  1. The "dream ticket" is an absurd idea, I have no idea what the true motivations of those pushing for it are. We are done with Iraq as soon as a democrat is elected, and no we didn't have to clone Jefferson or Adams, or Monroe.
A Clinton / Obama ticket would be counter productive we will have a clear leader, with either candidate.
