Rev. Wright says critics are attacking black church
Never one to shy away from controversy, Rev. Jeremiah Wright responded again today to criticisms over his sermons, which have become a lightning rod for opponents of Barack Obama, a former member of Wright's church.
Speaking at the start of a two-day symposium at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Wright called the recent criticisms an attack on the black church and said Obama has distanced himself out of political need.

The controversy stems from sermons Wright gave following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, in which he suggested that America had partially brought the attacks upon itself. Wright's association with Obama brought his comments to the national spotlight in the heated Democratic presidential campaign.
The latest speech marks the third time in a week Wright has spoken out about the media firestorm surrounding his sermons. On Sunday, he addressed 10,000 people at an NAACP dinner in Detroit at which he called his statements "descriptive" rather than "divisive." Last week, Wright broke his silence on the subject, telling PBS's Bill Moyers he and his church had been treated unfairly.

Clearly Wright LOVES the attention. He was a local personality in a small market (Chicago)- now he is on a national stage. He is basically a racial demagogue . I also believe this is some pay back by him to Obama for not respecting his egotistical elder advisor- sort of a black/african hierarchal tribal thing, you know. Plus that right /left brain stuff is ludicrious-what does poor Barrick have to say about that???
When Wright said on public television " God Damn America", he was in fact making a political statement, he was not making a religious statement. He was sowing seeds of mistrust, and now he is reaping exactly what he has sowed.
A lack of trust from those of us who heard his exact words.
Wow another Rev Wright story. Can't wait to see that article on raising gas prices, college costs skyrocketing, home foreclosures, job losses, 100 year Iraq war, 5 airlines shutting their doors in one month, failing education system, high price of food, food shortage around the world, tainted toys and food from china, US infrastructure collapses......oh wait a minute there was no clip of the infamous speech attached to this article. I guess that will be the topic for tomorrow.
that'll teach obama to stick up for his "friends." there's nothing wrong with jacking up his fee for public appearances by throwing knives at people, but "rev" wright could have had the decency to wait until after the election. i guess one million-dollar mansion just wasn't enough this year.

There is consequences when supposedly spiritual people put their feet into the political oven.Like Hilliary Clintons now most talked about quotes "if you cannot stand the heat get out of the kitchen." Its no doubt Obamas image is in serious trouble with Rev Wrights (his pastor) malicious verbal attacks of this charitable nation on earth and its citizens. The loving Lord Jesus Christ said "If ye say ye love me and hate thy brother or neighbor ye have no promise".Wouldn't it be great for America if Hilliary Clinton and Mitt Romney were the elected President and Vice President of this country?.They're smart pair and will bring the nation together.
I, a middle-aged white male just listened to all of Wright's comment's. I believe anyone who is further offended by what Wright has to say has a profound misunderstanding of U.S. history and the black American experience.
I guess further offense should come as no surprise, however. After all, we are a nation that voted for Bush--twice. If those who find offense with Wright prevail in the next election--all I can say is we get what we deserve--and God help us.
A year ago, Reverend Wright wrote a letter to the New York Times in which he had nothing but praise for Obama. It is clear that his latest media appearances and classification of Obama as "just a politician" are an attempt to get back at Obama for denouncing his offensive comments. It really sucks that he would let his ego get in the way of the chance to elect the first black president in this country, which would be a tremendous milestone in the civil rights struggle that he and other black leaders have been fighting for decades. This does not change my view of Obama, but it really makes me mad that Reverend Wright would be so petty at a time like this.
On October 2, 2002, Barack Obama’s judgment told him that starting a war in Iraq would be a big mistake and he forcefully said so. Much to the contrary later that same month both Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain voted for funds authorizing President Bush to begin the Iraq war.
When Barack Obama decided to run for president, unlike Hillary Clinton and John McCain, he made the significant decision that he would not accept campaign contributions from lobbyists and special interest political action committees. It was Barack Obama’s judgment that if he was going to become the next President of the United States that he be elected by the American people without the distorting influence of the money peddlers in Washington.
That’s the kind of change that Barack Obama represents which concerns so many in Washington who don’t seem eager for the American people to reclaim their democracy from the influence of special interest political action committees and lobbyists, the Washington money peddlers who currently arrange to provide huge amounts of financial support to political candidates whom they believe have a good chance of winning, and whom they can then “work with” later on.
This election is not about whether you happen to be a woman or a man, or whether your father was a black man or a white man, an Asian or a Hispanic. It is not about remarks made by Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. or anyone else. This election is about the future of our country and is about whether the majority of Americans are ready to elect as their next president an individual with integrity, intelligence, and fresh ideas, a 47 year old biracial man who is much less interested in political games than he is in seriously addressing the significant problems facing our country and the rest of the world.
We are at a historic moment in America. Barack Obama is a very special individual who as president will bring a much needed breath of fresh air to Washington and help ordinary Americans begin reclaiming their democracy.
"He was a local personality in a small market"
CHICAGO is a small "market" for a preacher???
Why don't you just ask the ni**er to shut up? Or maybe you should listen to him; besides being challenging to your thought process, he is mostly correct.
NOBODY seems to want to hear what he has to say. 9/11: first, don't be surprised if people want to hurt us (we've hurt lots of people). Second, it would be better to think about where we are with God, rather bombing babies needlessly. We were in a mode where we thought only about payback.
Hating white people is good business. It can even make you rich: Jeremiah Wright retires in a $1 million house and with a$10 million line of credit. Jesse Jackson lives with a slush fund provided by his non-profit organization. His son owns a Budweiser beer distributorship that many a millionaire could not afford to buy. Is it any wonder they preach hate? If they could not keep the two races hating each other, these two men would become irrelevant and their income would be modest. They are among the most evil men in America.
They 've all but taken "In God We Trust" off our $$. The new dollar coin has it...in minute lettering along the edge of the coin. Our government has been turning it's back on God.....we don't want to offend anyone. We were built with God schiselled into the marble of the face of our government buildings, on our money. Now we don't want to offend anyone? And you have the nerve to find Rev Wright offensive? I'm white, 59, and I support Obama and Rev Wright. Our government is going down a bad path.
Hey William, google Tony Rezko. Then google McCain Fiengold.
Bruce, Liberating the Iraqi people from the cruelity of Sadam, Qusay, Uday, and the Bath party and then fighting a minority of extremists who are threated by democracy and self determination, is a polar opposite from carpet bombing babies. Try and think of a country you would like to live in that is not a democracy. Understanding the hopelessness and the disconnect from the modern world that people in lands like Iraq feel, is step one in bringing us into a livable future. Get over this America Bad ..Military Evil.... Masters of war ....garbage in your head and get on board for the big win.... Civilized and decent living conditions for people who are not recieving any help from their totalitarian leaders. That is real generational compasion.
I am die-hard obama supporter but Obama is going to have to counter rev. wright again. he has to to say again the he whole-heartedly disagrees with rev. wright. hell he may have to disown him but rev. wrong disowned obama. rev. wright is right that he is no politican, he is not a good pastor either. what an ego on that guy. he is not the black church. wright is himself. this is not a mater of style or cultural differences when you say the US started aids to kill black people. that is not a style. barack obama is going to have to give another speech on this or something. wright is a small, perhaps jelous person to attack obama the way he did in his speech. rev. wright estienally called obama a liar. What is wright thinking? Obama didn't lie, he doesn't agree with you. His experiences are different than yours Wright. Get over it!
Now Obama must must must win indiana to get the nomination. Does the american public trust obama? Do they trust him enough to believe him when he truthful says he disagrees with rev. wright? He has to win over white blue collar voters in Indiana. Everything is on the line on may 6th. Obama rose to the occasion before in making his speech in Philly and believe he will again. But he has to make some other statement that explains how he has never heard statements like 'usa created aids to kill black people" going to the church for 20 yrs. true he was answering media questions about his statements but Obam has a huge preception problem: "america has only known rev. wright in his own words for three days and we have heard pleanty of extremely ludicrous statements like 'black kids learn differently than white kids' or 'the government started aids to kill black people' how did obama manage to go to church for twenty years and not hear it?
However, this also presents a great oportunity for Obama. He can talk about why he disagrees with rev. wright and specifically about how his experiences have shaped him. he can also use this as a chance to disple all the elitist and 'obama doesn't care about poor people" non-sense. he can talk more about being raised by his white mother and grandparents. he can talk more about his mother. he can talk more about being a community org. and he HAS to talk a bit more about why he chose rev. wright's church. he has to place great importance on the church community over rev. wright. he can then link his humble beginings to community org. to charity of community and hope (mention ayers briefly-they know each other because ayers, a univ. of chicago english teacher, and obama and guest lect. at UC were on the same chairty board and also explain the charity) then mention his mother again then talk about healthcare. then he needs to talk about people he has meet on the campaign trial. he needs to link his life experience and passion for service and helping peopel with the people he has might all across adn that how we, the country must come together to solve these problems with real solutions, maybe refer people to his website or his plan book "blueprint for change." and then talk about how his campaign is different. how he will represent them because he is like them. how he wasn;t born with a golden spoon in his mouth and how he wont; tlak money from lobbyists. he is of the people adn he will be for the people, all people. america thought they knew barack obama, now his pastor and other associations make them not so sure. he needs to reassure them that they he is who they thought he was. he has to create a pattern, always use to understand notjust race in america in context but these people in obama's life in context.
I am a 72 year old white woman who went to college with black women. They went home to the county next door to the Emmitt Till lynching and we wondered if we would see them that fall.
I am a grandmother of a delightful grandchild (isn't everyone's) of mixed racial heritage.
Is my grandchild's experience of racial tension the same as my own or my memories? Will he experience the same fear when he leaves his home as his father, growing up in the projects, did? Or the fear many young people in Chicago have when simply going to school?
Of course Rev. Wright's attitude towards racial issues is different from my own and my son-in-law and my grandchild and for that matter, Barack Obama's
If we are to have an honest dialogue on racial prejudice and its effects on all of us, we can't pretend that it doesn't exist. We can't pretend that we have the same experience of it or experience it in the same context.
Grant Rev. Wright his experience and context, accept our unique and individual experiences and contexts and get on with it. And whether or not you support Obama for president, don't let the Wright brouhaha determine your vote.
Hey Richard...Why aren't we in liberating Sudan? Or China? Or North Korea? You think we actually give a rats ass about freedom and democracy? HA! You are sadly mistaken. We only care about oil and showing up our father, 'Hey look daddy, I can kill a dictator you let go'.
Give me a break, fool!
Let's remember, you have the opportunity to read the Bible and digest it. Once you expect Jesus Christ as savior, there is no separation, no matter what title or position you hold. You are either a believer or non-believer. Rev. Wright has done a terrible job of representing our Lord, with his non-sense.
Obama is a believer who happens to be a politician and whether you like him or not, he took a stand for what is right and not Rev. Wright. Yes, White America/The System isn't doing it to us this time; it's one of your own. The world is witnessing what we do in our neighborhoods, tear each other down. I am a advocate of "choice" Rev. Wright had a "choice" to take the high road, however, he wants to be the man. Therefore, you have gotten your just reward Rev. Wright.
I challenge everyone to look up Black Liberation Theology and truly see what Wright pumped into Obama for 20yrs. I can tell you this....if you cannot have enough pride in out country to cover your heart during the national anthem....the anthem that our men and women are dying for, and if you call a man such as Rev. Wright, a mentor. You have no right to be my president. Also, Wright has dragged Obama into this because there is a storm brewing over the murder of a member in their comgregation, Donald Young. So Wright found out the story was gonna break and decided to muddy Obama up so that he will fail to get elected. Wright is hoping now, that if Obama is not elected...the story will stay hush hush. Please people....so some research.
Why is it that every so-called controversy that has something to do with Obama stays in the news for months, where as the controversies that come out of the Clinton camp are given a day or two at most? Be truthful with your answers and you will agree that there is a double standard here. Is it because he is Black (he is half-white)?
Many will not vote for Obama because he is Black (his skin color) but he has transcended race, age, gender, and religious barriers. Many thought he would never make it this far and I praise the ones (white Americans) who supported Obama despite his skin color. You have shown me that there is hope in this country for all Americans. Thank you.
What happened to the 200,000 new jobs for upstate New York Clinton promised during her 2000 New York Senate campaign? Not only did upstate New York not get the 200,000 new jobs as promised by Clinton but also they ended up losing nearly 40,000 jobs. Way to go Hillary. If you promised 200,000 jobs in New York and we lost 40,000, what will you do nationally?
Clinton has seized on a symbol of what she sees as the erosion of Americas defense industrial base: a company called Magnequench which once had two factories in Indiana. The company used to make high-performance magnets used in precision-guided weapons.
A Chinese company bought Magnequench, she said in a speech in Pittsburgh on April 14. The people of Indiana, the company and the elected officials begged the Bush administration to block the Chinese company from moving the jobs to China. Not only did the jobs go to China, but so did the intellectual property and the technological know-how to make those magnets. I'm not comfortable with the fact that we now have to buy magnets for our bombs from China.
She left out this fact:
Under the 1988 Exon-Florio law, either President Bill Clinton in 1995 or President Bush in 2003 could have blocked the sale of Magnequench or its merger with AMR Technologies.
Every time you turn around someone from the Clinton's camp or supporters are continually injecting race into the election.
Clinton prevarication on the Bosnia incident was a total fabrication with visual aids (Clinton acting it out on more than one occasion). This was not just Clinton misspeaking but it was a whole fantasy story that she acted out on 5 or 6 separate occasions.
Clinton said that Obama did not own up to what he said? This coming from someone (Clinton), who voted for the war in Iraq and still refuses to apologize for her vote or admit that it was a mistake. The closest she has come is to say if she had it to do over, she would not have voted for the war in Iraq.
Hillary Clinton said that Obamas words were divisive. Listen to what Clinton (be honest) is saying and tell me who is the one being divisive in this campaign.
. The Clintons made over 100 million dollars in 8 years. Most working Americans will never see that type of money in our lifetime.
These are some of the reasons why the lead closing for Obama. Clinton is trying to divert attention away from her many shortcomings and fabricated stories.
Hillary Clinton has touted her foreign policy experience, so let us look at the countries that she has purportedly helped or attempted to help by her own account.
Rwanda Beginning on April 6, 1994, it was the start of one the most horrific cases of genocide in recent times. On that date (aforementioned), a plane carrying the Rwandan and Burundian presidents, both Hutus, was shot down over Kigali, the Rwandan capital, 8 months after the peacekeepers arrived to help (from Bangladesh and Ghana lead by General Romeo Dallaire of Canada). The red phone rang off the hook but neither Clinton chose to answer the phone. The Clintons were kept informed of the escalating situation in Rwanda but chose to ignore it. General Dallaire states: "He told me that his estimates indicated that it would take the deaths of 85,000 Rwandans to justify the risking of the life of one American soldier." This statement came from the Clinton Administration. In the next 100 days following April 6, 1994, upward of 1,000,000 Rwandans (men, women and babies) were slaughtered. This number works out to be 10,000 men, women and babies killed each day. Machetes (not exactly a powerhouse military) killed most of the Rwandans. There were arguments from the Clinton administration about who would pay for it and if it should be called genocide. While the Clintons were arguing about semantics babies were being slaughtered. General Romeo Dallaire of Canada did what he could even when ordered to leave Rwanda he refused doing what he could. Where was Hillary Clintons voice through all of this, but she claimed to wanting to do something. Rwanda is an example of her foreign experience that she likes to tout. Is this the experience we want to answer the red phone or shall I say not answer the red phone.
Bosnia - Macedonian had opened its border to refugees before Hillary Clinton arrived to meet with government leaders. Hillary Clintons so-called mission to Bosnia was a one-day visit in which she was accompanied by performers Sheryl Crow and Sinbad, as well as her daughter, Chelsea (I guess these were Hillarys foreign advisors). That was Hillary Clintons involvement in this particular situation. This is another claim of her experience in foreign policy.
Northern Ireland Hillary Clintons involvement in the Northern Ireland peace process was primarily to encourage activism among women's groups there, a contribution that the lead U.S. negotiator described as "helpful" but that an Irish historian who has written extensively about the conflict dismissed as "ancillary" to the peace process. Tim Pat Coogan, an Irish historian who has written extensively on the conflict in Northern Ireland, said the first lady's visits were not decisive in the negotiating breakthroughs in Northern Ireland. Hillary played no role in negotiating with any leaders in the peace process.
China Hillary Clinton got strong reviews for threading the diplomatic needle with an impassioned speech that contained a wide-ranging denunciation of human rights abuses worldwide. She criticized China, without naming it directly. Sounds familiar to what Hillary Clinton has been saying about giving good speeches, we know her speech came without any action on her part.
Iraq Voted to go to war in Iraq, even though she claims it was for diplomatic purposes as she has previously proclaimed in her speeches leading up to the Iraq war. There is one problem with that and that is she held a press conference (the same day as Bush said that it seemed inevitable that there would be war) that stated that she was backing Bush all the way. Hillary had a meeting with a womens organization 2 weeks before the start of the Iraq war to reiterate her stance on the running Saddam out of Iraq. Here is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZcY6TGfAxE . Listen to what the women organization has to say and Hillarys response.
Clinton claimed that she "helped to bring peace" to Northern Ireland and negotiated with Macedonia to open up its border to refugees from Kosovo. She also cited "standing up" to the Chinese government on women's rights. If this is the foreign experience that she claims she has we do not want near the red phone, America cannot afford that kind of judgment and fabrications that Hillary brings.
Obama simply has the problem that he happens to be Black, Adelfa Callejo said when asked if it was smart for Sen. Obama to reach out to Latino voters.
The newscaster quoted her saying Obamas problem is that he happens to be black.
Rather than doing the right thing and reject and denounce her comments of her supporter, she laughed it off, according to the transcripts of the interview.
Clinton: "Well obviously I want us judged on our merits. I believe strongly that the fact that we have an African American and a woman running for the Democratic nomination is historical and I'm very very proud of that. I want people thought to look beyond, look beyond race and gender, look at our records, look what we stand for, look what we've done and I think thats what most voters are looking for."
Q (paraphrase) Is this something you reject and denounce?
"People have every reason to express their opinions. I just don't agree with that. I think that we should be looking at the individuals who are running."
Q - Do you still want her support, though?
Clinton laughed and said, "You know This is a free country. People get to express their opinions. A lot of folks have said really unpleasant things about me over the course of this campaign. You can' take any of that as anything other than an individual opinion."
Way to go Hillary you do not stand up for whats right if it means losing support but expects her opponents to stand up. The American people need someone that will bring us together not tear us apart. Clinton has been one of the most divisive Democrats that have ever run for president.
How would Clinton ever know how frustrated, angry and yes sometimes bitter the working class American citizen feels? Obama spoke the truth even though I do not agree with how he phrased it. I know because in the field (technology) that I am in has been struck particularly hard by outsourcing and very hard to find work. I do not know about you but I (working class citizen) am frustrated, angry and at times bitter.
The Iraq war
Over 3,900 (almost 4,000) US lives lost (died) No cost can cover 1 American life let alone over 3,900
About $3,000,000,000,000 spent
Enough money to give Americans 1,000,000 jobs at $75,000 each
Free healthcare to over 50,000,000 Americans
Feed every American
Many other things beneficial for Americans
Help put America into a recession.
NAFTA
Record job lost
Also, help put America into a recession.
Record job lost
63,000 jobs lost in February alone mainly because of NAFTA and the Iraq war
Obama, try your best to stay who you are, which is uniting the American people and try not to stoop to Hillary Clintons negative, divisive tactics.
Ask yourself some questions: Why have so many people that were and are still close to the Clintons have endorsed Obama? Is there something that they know (being an insider) that the American public does not know? If Clinton is the best candidate for president wouldnt there close friends endorse them? If you are truthful with your answers you will see that there is definitely something wrong that is not public knowledge when it comes to Hillary Clinton. Why is it that every so-called controversy that has something to do with Obama stays in the news for months, where as the controversies that come out of the Clinton camp are given a day or two at most? Be truthful with your answers and you will agree that there is a double standard here. Is it because he is Black (he is half-white)?
