Romney in 2012?

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 8, 2008 12:29 PM

Mitt Romney still has friends -- at least on Facebook.

A group on the immensely popular social networking site is already pushing the former Massachusetts governor as a presidential contender in 2012. It has posted a video on YouTube that shows excerpts from Romney's speech in February to the Conservative Political Action Conference when he dropped out of the Republican race, pairs it with an uplifting soundtrack from Death Cab for Cutie, and at the end highlights the slogan: "One Man Can Answer the Call and Bring America Back."

The video makes clear that it is not authorized by Romney's campaign, but the group is not the first to suggest possibility.

It is also promoting Romney as a possible vice presidential pick for John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee. It has a website that lists seven reasons the choice would make sense, including that Romney would be a "very strong candidate" in 2012 if McCain, who would be the oldest person elected to a first term as president if he wins in November, serves only one term.

Among other arguments:

"2. Romney doesn't have any skeletons in his closet that could hurt McCain.
3. Romney could still sell his turnaround the economy strategy and McCain could say that he would let Mitt write the economic strategy."

  1. The Republican Party and our nation need a McCain/Romney ticket and Romney/? in 2012. Other groups, such as Government is Not God, who are supporting Huckabee are not only ignorant in regard to what a winning ticket takes but are incredibly rude in their responses to anyone who disagrees with them.

Here is how Government Not God deals with people who disagree with them.

understand that? This was not a blog site. YOU SIGNED THE PETITON, you idiot! If
you want this self proclaimed opportunist as your president then go buy an ad in
the newspaper like we did and set up a web site. Stop your dishonesty. This is
not about discourse; this is about you being a cheap, dishonest two faced

    Nice folks, huh?

  1. Very nice indeed, Publius.

It highlights one of the many things I like about Romney; he has a great deal of grace and class. Throughout the campaign and even In the face of defeat, he responded with dignity and style.

This group could learn a lesson or two from the guy.

    I say McCain/Romney in 08 and Romney/Petreaus in 12!

  1. I can't see myself voting for Hillary, Obama, or McCain in 2008 unless McCain chooses Mitt as his VP. Our economy needs Mitt, and McCain doesn't have what it takes to take on this extremely complicated issue. Plus, if McCain were to fall ill or worse, Mitt would be able to take over and actually change some things in Washington FOR THE BETTER (not the worse like Obama would)

  1. Death Cab for Cutie supported Gore in 2000 and are one of the more politically progressive bands in music. I wonder if this group got their permission to score his ad with their music?

  1. The anti Romney PAC wouldn't be spending any dollars on campaigns against him unless they felt he was a viable threat. :) Go McCain-Romney and then Romney in 2012....I would even venture to further say 2016!

  1. Hey, Publius ... didn't that petition have a box you could check that said you WOULD vote for a McCain/Romney ticket? Funny how they put that as an option and then turn around and say we were dishonest for signing it! Unless that was just an easy way to sort out the pro Romney comments and make it easier to delete them! Nice folks indeed!

  1. What a shame some uninformed US citizens let the perfect presidential candidate
"slip through their fingers". MITT ROMNEY would make the most outstanding President or VP. If you really care about America's future, wake up and support MITT. Go Mitt!!
