Battle for hearts and minds on gas tax
Barack Obama has an ever-growing list of experts and newspaper editorial boards backing his opposition to a summer gas tax holiday.
They agree with him that the proposal makes little economic or environmental sense, and they join him in accusing Democratic rival Hillary Clinton and Republican John McCain of political pandering. For instance, the Concord Monitor, which endorsed Clinton before the New Hampshire primary, called the idea "a turkey."
But on the politics, not the policy, it's not at all clear that Obama will be the winner -- not with gas prices at all-time highs and some experts predicting $4 a gallon this summer.
Republicans, in particular, are hammering Obama by accusing him of flip-flopping by supporting a similar temporary suspension while he was an Illinois state senator.
The Republican National Committee launched a web-only ad today that says Obama has no short-term plan for dealing with gas prices and that highlights what it calls his "hypocrisy" on a tax holiday.
The ad, however, doesn't note that Obama eventually voted against extending the gas tax suspension, saying that oil companies weren't passing on the savings to motorists.
"Barack Obama just doesn’t get it. Does he understand our economy, and what American families and businesses need?" the announcer says. "Barack Obama. Out of touch. Not ready to be president."

At least Obama tells the truth to the public, this is the man who we need as president
What he needs to do is fight back HARD on this.
Calling Al Gore.....Al...?
This country is spinning way out of control. I do not believe that our presidential candidates can do anything at this point. We need someone in office with a clear prospective on how to run this country the RIGHT way. Pleasee see my website to vent about the destruction of this country. http://www.freewebs.com/middleclassrevolt/
As the value of the dollar drops,...it costs more dollars to buy the same amount of oil...hense the higher cost for gas. Every time the FED cuts the prime interest, the dollars value drops,..gas prices go up. Gas prices won't go down until the oil commodities bubble bursts and oil drops down to 70-80 bucks a barrel, where it belongs.
Hi Obama, whats up guy is dealing with major issues kind a chill you down to your spine? Yeah, its frustrating when you can't figure out the need for a short term solution to ease our way forward towards a long term conclusion. You look at both sides when solving problems short and long, up and down and so forth in order to fix it.Having a nice speech doesn't mean much than showing us your solution to deal with it in the short term first and then the long run to get rid of it completely.
A temporary dropping of the Federal Gas Tax will make gas less expensive and thereby promote consumption. We don't need gimmics, we need action which will result in finding less expensive and more secure sources of fuel. An all out Manhattan style, project the goal of which is to free us from imports from unreliable foreign sources, is what we need. It would create new jobs, and new technologies. Factor the cost of our involvment in Iraq in to the cost of fuel and you will find that although more exotic fuels may seem to cost us more than what we are paying for gas today, in reeality they are probably comprable.
What has Clinton told us? That only she can win the "big states"? That Wright has irreparably harmed Obama? That she's "more electable"? That independents like her more?
Let's see what New Jersey has to say about it, all of it post-Wright, of course:
Monmouth U. 4/24-28. Registered voters. MoE 3.7% (No trend lines)
McCain (R) 32
Obama (D) 56
McCain (R) 38
Clinton (D) 52
They both win handily, but Obama's extra 10 points will come in handy in a state that will feature multiple hot House races.
But more interestingly than that is the following fact, given that this is a state that Clinton won by 10 points 54-44:
Who would you personally like to see the Democratic party nominate as its presidential
candidate —Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama? (Asked only of Democrats)
Obama 45
Clinton 38
Again, after Wright, after "bitter", after all the nonsense in this campaign, the very people who gave Clinton a solid victory on February 5 now prefer Obama.
Meanwhile, in the general election matchups:
Total Dem Ind Rep
McCain (R) 32 10 33 79
Obama (D) 56 84 50 13
McCain (R) 38 13 41 86
Clinton (D) 52 81 42 11
Obama runs stronger across the board. In a state, remember, that Clinton claims only she can win because it's "big" and she won the primary, and all of this after Obama was rendered "unelectable" by Wright and "bitter".
Easy for those sitting in ivory towers to dismiss something out-of-hand, as being unbeneficial. Such arrogance! To those of us living on the financial edge all of the time, any break is of great benefit, politically motivated or not. I can imagine using
the benefits calculated, even if only for 2 to 3 months, paying for a week of electricity, another prescription, or two, or three, being filled, a few more loaves of
bread, or if you prefer another half tank of gas. Don't pretend to tell me what is good for me, and what isn't. Get out here with the working folks, where every
penny counts, for some hard hitting reality. Then, when you have walked in those
shoes for a little while, cast your vote as you will.
Overlooked is the fact that the oil industry continues to report record quarterly profits in the TENS OF BILLIONS of dollars. You and I can't afford to drive to work, while these companies profit from not only the ridiculous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but on our hard earned dollars.
When the government ceases to be run by corporate interests (even to the point of declaring illegal wars for the sake of profit margins) then we can expect change. This will not just happen on its own.
Without a massive movement on the part of a united front of ALL classes of people here in the United States, things will continue to grow exponentially worse.
All politicians pander - Obama panders less - and does not insult the intelligence of the American people. Can't tell it like it is and get elected. Ask what your country can do for you not what you can do for your country.
This is funny:
"Expert Support For Gas Tax Holiday Appears Nonexistent"

Not even the truckers think its a good idea.....go figure eh?
Hillary is going to make herself dizzy with this spin cycle......

It would be difficult to guarantee that any tax break on gas would be passed on to consumers, especially if the tax is passed over to the oil companies. OPEC recently suggested that if the value of the dollar keeps dropping that we shouldn't be surprised to see the POO rise to $200 a barrel. This proposed "tax holiday" is a sham that won't solve anything. We obviously need to be encouraging alternative energy usage and smaller, more efficient cars.
