California congressmen add to Obama superdelegate haul

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 15, 2008 07:04 PM

Barack Obama is extending his lead in superdelegates as the Democratic Party coalesces behind him.

Congressmen Howard Berman and Henry Waxman -- both from California, both key committee chairmen, and both leaders in the Jewish community -- added their blessings.

“Senator Obama’s vision for change has inspired tens of millions of Americans,” Waxman, chairman of House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said in a statement. “And he’s also proved that he has the experience, judgment, integrity, and toughness to bring real reform to Washington. Our nation faces big challenges. We need to bring our troops safely home from Iraq. We need to solve global warming and finally enact universal health care legislation. And we need to create new jobs and strengthen our middle class. Senator Obama is the leader we need both here and around the world. He will be an extraordinary President, and I look forward to working with him to make his vision for change the new reality in Washington.”

Berman, chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, added: “Barack Obama has laid out a foreign policy vision driven by principle and conviction, and he understands that our moral authority and our safety as a nation go hand in hand. I spoke with him about a number of foreign policy issues that most concern me. He assured me that he shares my views. The moment President Obama takes office, we’ll send a powerful message to the world that America is back and ready to lead again -- that we haven’t abandoned the values that made us the light of the world, and neither should anyone else.”

Obama has also won the endorsements today of US Representative Jim McDermott of Washington and Larry Cohen, president of the Communications Workers of America and a member of the Democratic National Committee.

He also reportedly has added at least five of the 19 delegates pledged to John Edwards, who endorsed Obama on Wednesday night.

Obama, with 1,896 total delegates, is now within 130 of clinching the nomination.

  1. Make that a total of 10 delegates today. TPM reports 6 former Edwards delegates from SC have moved to Obama. Looking good!

  1. Boy West Va and all those bitter people who voted based on race are looking pretty meaningless right about now.

  1. Since Hillary won W. Virginia by 41 points how many superdelegates have gone her way? Like, 2 or 3? Meanwhile, Obama has picked up something like 10 supers in addition to at least 4 of Edward's pledged as well as endorsements from the United Steelworkers and NARAL. No amount of spin from the Hillary Camp has changed anything. It just goes to show how inept her campaign has been as well as the brilliance of Obama's campaign.

  1. I don't understand why, while these foreign policy experts, as well as many other very intelligent, thoughtful, and compassionate experts, are satisfied with Obama's credentials and views, some liberals are not. Are liberals as stupidly obstinate as conservatives?

  1. OBAMA IS A LOSER AND DOESN'T DESERVE THE NOMINATION. HE IS A CHAUVINISTIC PIG AND A WOMANIZER. HE'S ALSO RACIST, TWO FACED AND EVIL. HILLARY FOR 08!! MCCAIN FOR 08!! ANYBODY IS BETTER THAN MEDIA DARLING OBAMA BIN LADEN.

  1. On to the general election we go. I'm assuming we will have at least 3 more weeks of Clinton hanging around, but this is such a done deal already.

  1. Not sure how Stratus's comments contribute to intelligent discourse. *Shrug* Oh well. It's no loss. Those with your mindset weren't going to vote for Obama anyway, so go ahead and vote for McCain.

  1. Hillary says that the party will be very united once a nominee is selected. While the party may become united, is it realistic to assume that longer it takes to select a democratic nominee, harder it becomes to defeat John MaCain ? After all, the objective is to seat a democrat in the white house. Who is she working for ? John MaCain ?

  1. The floodgate has been cracked open. The huge lake that has formed will now naturally flow to its destined location. This may be over sooner than we are anticipating. No ill feelings should exit. Time to go to the next level of the campaign.

  1. It's so nice that this is finally over. Granted, it was over back in February but because Hillary is a Clinton, she wasn't cast aside then. At least now real Democrats can unite behind our nominee, Barack Obama. It's time to leave the past (McSame, McBush and Billary) behind.

  1. It is amazing how stupid some folks can be such as Stratus.
One would have to say that Obama is a winner, he beat out the Clinton Political machine. She was the heavy favorite who blew it with her lies, like being under fire in Bosnia or that she would annihilate Iran. If you look at Hillary's record one can see that it is very poor, she is all talk often stating me me and she panders to each group she tries to get votes from. Hilary's campaign is just as nasty as Karl Roves was. Hillary feels entitled to be president we do not need another republican in the White House such as Hillary or McCain

  1. It's good to see Messrs Berman and Waxman come on board, especially while that fool Bush is in Israel trying to nasty up Obama's name with the people of that nation and with Jewish people generally.

  1. Stratus is a loser, chauvenistic pig (if male) and a womanizer! I have absolutely no proof whatsoever but I will state it now! It's true because I posted it here!

Yeah right. Pathetic. It's not true but neither is the pathetic statement above.

I just love how people like to try and associate this man with a CIA asset like Osama bin Laden. Ultimately they will both end up working for the same country. Sheesh.

  1. Stratus... if Obama is a racist, chauvinistic, womanizing pig, he would be be just like your hero, Bill Clinton. I would think you would be loving him?

  1. Sadly the post by "Stratus" is no surprise, there's even a group forming now in Ohio of women who voted for Hillary saying they'll back McCain because Obama is sexist and so is the dem party if Hillary isn't the nominee

  1. Stratus -using capital letters is impolite and akin to yelling. To say nothing of your comments being those of an angry, illogical and dumb person.

  1. The Democratic Party is cut in half because of this long boring campaign whoever came up with this stupid Primaries format should be blame if we loose in the general election which is sure look like it.John Mccain is not an easy guy to bring down in the heat of the election.

  1. It is clear that there should be a penalty for violating the rules set by the DNC, but on the other hand the penalty cannot be so great as to totally disenfranchise, and therefore alienate, the voters of those very important states.
My proposal for seating Florida and Michigan at the convention in Denver is to give each delegate from those states half a vote. That way, you would preserve the authority of the DNC to set the rules for the primary process, while at the same time allowing the votes of those states to be counted. The uncommitted vote in Michigan should be assigned to Senator Obama, because to do otherwise would be to unduly penalize him for following the agreed upon rules. Senator Clinton still gains an advantage by receiving the majority of the delegates from those states, but not to such an extent as to make a mockery of the whole process.
This approach is in line with the treatment of the overseas territories and seems to be the fairest means to settling the dispute. Maybe the rule could be permanently adopted as a guide to resolving future disputes.

  1. A certain segment of superdelegates are stuck in old-school politics and need time to adjust to Sen. Obama's plans and goals.

The Clintons have their sights set. They are a powerhouse in their own right. Any action, appointment, or position will be used by her to attain her true goal. They are $20,000,000.00 in debt. How will they pay thier creditor's back?

Obama's judgement will make him a strong and effective leader. Like his campaign, he'll surround himself with a smart and reliable team to take America away from the politics that reward special interests and the extremely wealthy.

  1. I just read from a previous writer that Obama is a womanizer! My, I haven't heard anything like that before. Is he ticking Spitzer?

  1. Perhaps someone could explain to me how John McCain, who called his wife and meal ticket a Trollop and a Cunt (I am deeply sorry for the language but they're his words and not mine) is less chauvinistic than Barack Obama.

Barack is married to a brilliant, articulate, and classy woman. He's obviously deeply in love with her, appreciates all that she is, and treats her as an equal partner.

This looks like a 21st century relationship to me ...
