Cindy McCain releases some tax information

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 23, 2008 05:07 PM

After insisting that his wife's tax information would remain private, John McCain had his campaign this afternoon release summaries of her returns for 2006.

The summaries showed that Cindy McCain made nearly $6.1 million that year, including more than $4.5 million in royalties, and paid about $1.7 million in federal taxes. She is an heiress to an Arizona beer distributorship.

Cindy McCain had said this month that she would never release her tax returns, even if she became first lady. Under a prenuptial agreement, the McCains have separate assets and file separate tax returns. John McCain made his tax returns public last month.

The McCain campaign statement did not explain why she changed her mind.

But the Democratic National Committee wasn't satisfied by the release.

"John McCain's woefully inadequate record on transparency flies in the face of his own rhetoric and the accountability the American people expect from their leaders. It is laughable for the campaign to release so little information and say they are being transparent. This is another indication that John McCain is not serious when he says he wants to run a transparent campaign, and a disturbing sign that a vote for John McCain is a vote for four more years of secrecy," said spokeswoman Karen Finney.

  1. Cindi McCain is not running for president. If they file separately then what does her income have to do with him. Darned Democrats are the most 2 faced people in the world. I am not a republican either.

  1. They have a pre-nup agreement, they file separately. Seems to me that Cindi is being attacked. Obama would immediately issue a statement that the wife should be off limits. He should immediately discipline his staffer that made the statement.

  1. Attacking the candidates wifes is unfortunate, however Democrats did not start it. McCain and the Republicans have made it clear the wifes are fair game so let it be.

Cindy McCain is a x-drug addict, adulteress and has made money off some of the most notorious and brutal regimes in the world.

If the Republicans want to play games with this then lets play.

  1. its a tough subject....on one hand I can see its a private matter, and privacy should be allowed for his wife.....Like the first post said, Mr McCain is running for office, not his wife.....

But, Mr. McCain also has a very questionable background in terms of his wealth, business practices and lobbyist ties that he could have had kept secret under his wifes name......

BUT!!!!! in this election when its Barack Obama against John McCain, we should judge based on their policies not the headlines of stories that get "Created" and not "reported".......

Karen Finney - wasn't that her defending Theresa Heinz Kerry when SHE didn't release her tax returns?

  1. Angry in Mass (#5):

I seem to recall the Republicans were VERY avidly demanding this level of transparency from Theresa Heinz Kerry. So the real question is, where are they now?

Therein lies the hypocrisy. Quit trying to have it both ways.
