Clinton adds superdelegate

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 14, 2008 11:46 AM

Hillary Clinton has picked up her first superdelegate since her big win in West Virginia.

Her campaign announced the support of Vicky Harwell, president of the Tennessee Federation of Democratic Women.

"Hillary’s decisive victory in West Virginia is the latest evidence that she is the strongest candidate to take on John McCain and win back the White House,” Harwell said in a statement. “Hillary has the plans, leadership and experience to deliver real results as President."

After leading in superdelegates since the start of the primaries, she lost her edge over the weekend. She now trails 287.5 to 272.5, according to the latest Associated Press tally.

  1. Tennessee will never go Obama in November. Harold Ford could not even get elected against a republican and Harold Ford has been in Tennessee politics for a long time. I campaigned hard for Ford but Tennessee elects democrats for state positions but does not send them to the White House. I think Obama should write off Tennessee, West Virginia, Kentucky and one of the reasons is because his supporters instead of trying to be inclusive they have been degrading the people of these states.

  1. Imagine a presidential primary where, after more than 16 months, almost two dozen debates, hundreds of speeches, millions of dollars, and countless chicken dinners, the rationale for electing someone boils down to this: Vote for me. I'm white. I can win because other whites will vote for me.

Why, this could be the new affirmative action. Whatever happened to merit?

Oh, a little context on WV…when it comes to blow outs, Obama has won 21 contests by more than 20% -- Clinton only 3 (West Virginia, Oklahoma and Arkansas).

  1. Why is the Obama campaign relating to lower wage earners, less
educated etc... these are the people voting overwhelmingly for
Hillary Clinton. Does he think everyone voting for him should only be
the affluent and well educated? If so he will truly be the trounced on
by McCain in November if he is chosen by the DNC (not by the voters)
    to represent the Democratic Party.
They (DNC) also make it very apparent they are digging their heels in
by not counting the voters and delegates of Florid and Michigan. Last
time I looked there are 50 states not 48!

  1. Congratulations Hillary! Fight on to the Convention if needed!

P.S. Don Little, making comments like the one you just posted is precisely why your candidate will never make it (in addition to his gross lack of experience)!

  1. Yeah I am an ardent supporter of the Clintons. My support origianates from the heroic life of Bill. Hillary is needed now to send the Republicans out of the white House.
This does not affect my apreciation of Obama's place in the US history. But please Democrats should seperate senstiments from party goals.

  1. Charles: The only one with sentiments are HRC followers such as yourself. Hillary has lost already - there is no way she can win. So in the interest of beating McSame, how about professing unity for Obama as you do for Clinton?

Even with FL and MI seated, she would still be behind. This thing is o-v-e-r.

Instead of harping on speculation that BO CAN'T win, why don't you start to think of how he can, instead of spewing hate in his direction. He won this contest fair and square. He won it in February, by the rules. The only reason Clinton has been allowed to stay in the race is precisely because the media loves her.

It's been good for BO to have her stay in the race, and she should through June 3rd when the last vote is cast. THenm, she needs to step aside.

  1. I hope this gives the delegates who have backed Obama a little time to realize that Obama is a seriously flawed candidate. There are too many unanswered questions for many of us to ever consider voting for him. The DNC needs to understand that.

  1. We NEED the brilliance of HILLARY NOW and Obama in 2012.
    Go HILLARY!

  1. Too little, too late.

Democratic party nomination is so 2007. This is an election year. The duel will be between McCain and Obama.

    Bring it on.

  1. Yesterday, in West-Virginia we saw a big blow for Barrack Hussein Obama camp ! A nasty blow for him ! A nasty blow for Howard Dean, which showed to be a looser and a divider in this party ! So called "leaders" take decisions only behind the close doors and are out of touch ! If they will continue to create the "ambuscades" against Hillary and to change the election outcome, over 50% of Hillary's supporters will vote for John McCain . Because nobody from these "corrupted leaders" will be Alpha and Omega on the Terra ! To the highest possible extend of this "so called" "democratic Party", it can take another course or will try a new coat !
And let's Obama and Dean to run a wild goose chase or to shoot the Niagara !
Let's give full expression to keep the game alive ! We can strike a blow at our corrupted leaders! We'll stand for Hillary ! We can shake hands with a new "Independent Party" ! Never, the honest people wouldn't accept money or bribe from Obama, only to get the fake nomination, against the American people's
will ! If today (May 14,2008) should begin another nomination process, Obama will get only 26% of electorate ! And let's not forget Florida & Michigan ! GO HILLARY !!!

  1. Oh please consider this more like a pity vote for poor Hillary. She needs to stop wasting her time and just get on with her life. http://www.obamarocks08.com
    whats your opinion?

  1. When I travel outside of the United States I am so sad when I hear how people view us as a country and look down on us because of our leaders' arrogant attitude and disturbing foreign policy; and when the Clintons were in the White House, the other nations made a laughing stock of us because of the constant scandals in the news with Bill. I want new blood in the White House mainly so we have a chance at restoring our good name in the world. I look forward to Obama being President, almost like I look forward to the freshness and newness of Spring.

  1. Wait, there must be some mistake, how did Hillary get a Superdelegate?

    Posted by latinovoter1 May 14, 08 03:14 PM
  1. GO, HILLARY, GO! YES, YOU CAN! YES YOU WILL! Don't pay attention to the naysayers. Teddy Kennedy in with 1221delegates way, way fewer than you do now took it all the way to the convention even if Carter had 1981 - and no one asked him to give up at the time! The misogynistic bastards in the media and Dem party are showing their true colours and have absolutely NO SHAME! IT AIN'T OVER TILL THE LADY IN THE PANTSUIT SAYS IT IS!

  1. I feel it is time for America to unite and this presidential election needs to be won by an experienced person who can assist the majority of persons who are suffering from unethical bank appraisals and citibanks credit analysis. Iraq is the biggest ripoff of all time and I don't want to work like a mule trying to feed my children so when they get old enough they can be working for Haliburton...free.....I am tired of all the millionares who are millionares on paper only because there isn't enough money to cover all of those banking lies...So why elect another political questionable ethical person into the White House? Obama did accept monies from oil executives and his racial haters are not an issue to deal with at this time...People let us get behind the right candidate and end the ridiculous political policies in Washington. Senators and Governors are all dating prostitutes and whatever else they do with our money....Enough I say lets do the right thing and maybe Hilliary is experienced in all of the above issues first hand.....At least I believe she is honest in her intentions and will not be influenced by other issues as racial supremecy. We do not need more problems we need true answers for the sake of the next generation.....

  1. Congrats to Hillary from an Obama supporter. I like both candidates and would vote for either one over John McSame. I hope the WV win moves us closer to the Dream Ticket.

  1. THANK-YOU, so much for your endorsement and continued support for Senator Hillary Clinton. This election is so important and we need strong leadership and one who knows the issues and has plans for the American people. We need someone who is ready to deal with issues and resolve the economy issues, healthcare issues, employment issues and the food and gas prices. We need someone who has specific ideas of how to deal with the mess of the Bush years. We need someone who has the support of retired military and military leaders to quickly get our troops home and reinforce the troops to secure our borders and security from the real enemy. We need a fighter and one who can talk, debate and confront leaders of other countries or within our own government to make a real difference for Americans. We need a strong leader who understands the struggles of the middle class, working mothers, families trying to send their kids to college, those who are about to lose their homes and those who have no healthcare. We need Senator Hillary Clinton as our next President. Thank-you for your wisdom by choosing to endorse Senator Clinton. I hope others will follow your knowledge and leadership.

    Respectfully,

  1. Good Morning,

I was hoping that you had the opportunity to watch the West Virginia primary returns last night. Senator Clinton won by a huge margin. I believe it is because even though the news media and the Democratic Party have said this race is over and have stated there is no reason to vote in the primaries any longer, Senator Clinton remained positive and committed to her supporters. She did go to the state and listen to their concerns and stated her plans to address their specific issues. This state has the largest number of persons on food stamps. The economy has hit this state the hardest. Senator Clinton demonstrates caring toward all Americans and really does have a plan for getting this Country back on track. She will bring home our troops in a calculated and safe manner, she will develop more jobs and keep them in the US, and she will go after the oil companies and reduce the cost of gas. Further, she will look at becoming more oil independent so that we are not reliant on our enemies for oil, she will reduce the cost of food by looking at assistance for the farmers and by looking at other options of fuel other than food, she will get healthcare for all and she will reduce the costs of college education.

In West Virginia, she maintained her core-voting group and extended it to the young, the college student, the college graduates and those who are earning a substantial income.

Another thing I would encourage you to consider is the electoral vote. We need a Democrat in our White House this fall. Senator Clinton has looked at the whole state in which she campaigns. If you look at the Electoral College votes, she is leading both of the other candidates by a huge margin. Here is a website that updates daily for an even broader view.

    http://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2008/Clinton/Maps...

As you now, in the general election, it is the Electoral College votes that determine who becomes President. This is huge and demonstrates that Senator Clinton does have the math to win!!

I am hoping that you will endorse Senator Clinton at this time to continue her momentum and to give other superdelegates a nudge toward endorsing her as well. Again, I want to thank-you for your consideration. I know this is a huge decision and I will respect your choice.

    Respectfully,

  1. Have you seen the video of Senator Obama in Michigan at a plant where he referred to a woman reporter as "sweetie" and then did not answer her question? This is not Presidential!!

Posted by Kathryn L. Crawford May 14, 08 06:30 PM
  1. Reading the above posts, I really respect those who can support their candidate with appropriate language and courtesy toward people welling to submit themselves to such intense pressure and scrutiny. I am a HIllary supporter and plan on writing her name in on the ballot if it is not there in November. The reason why I choose to do the write-in is because in no way do I want McCain and the Republicans in for four more years, but I also do not want business as usual from the Democrats. People keep saying that there will be change, but when I look at the "facts", I do not see change. The very people who are saying "politics as usual" are the very people who are now and will be doing "politics as usual." Four more years of pandering and paying off supporters with special positions will not get us where we need to go. Hillary is strong enough through this whole process to run an administration and a country with toughness and insight that no other candidate to this date has had to show for so long. She has been held to a "triple standard" compared to other candidates. I have recently resigned from the Democratic Party at the National, State, and local level after years of activism and local elected participation. I can no longer support the kind of politics that I see the Democratic Party and over half of its leadership and supporters exhibiting. The vulgar, slanderous, opposition both in the media and on the internet has made me ashamed of what this country is headed for in the future. I'm tired of being placed in a box by the media (white-black, educated-noneducated, woman-man, worker-non-worker, blue collar-white collar). I'm proud of who I am and the opinions I have. In no way, would I attempt to be so nasty and critical of someone who thinks different from me. So, have your rude and insensitive comments, but I trust that many of you will wake up to the importance of respect, courtesy and honor among citizens.

  1. Hillary did a wonderful job in W. Viginia. This is a big message to those who insist her to go out from the race. You got your answer from the people. She is the strongest candidet for november. You will see this big surprise soon.
