Clinton gets teary over Chelsea

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 14, 2008 03:35 PM

Hillary Clinton has another verklempt moment in the first of a series of national TV interviews today trying to capitalize on her win in West Virginia.

Clinton is talking about her daughter Chelsea, who has taken on a far more public role during the campaign when she gets choked up, CNN is reporting on its website.

"Well, it's one of the most incredibly gratifying experiences of my life, as a person and as a mother. I get very emotional," Hillary Clinton says in the interview, which will air on CNN' "Situation Room." "She is an exceptional person, and she's worked so hard, and she's done such a good job that I'm just filled with pride every time I look at her."

"Obviously, we are very close," Clinton says of her daughter, who was also featured in a Mother's Day video that the campaign released last week.

"We are in communication all the time. But she is doing this because she believes I'd be a good president, but also because she cares so much about our country's future. She did grow up in the White House. She knows what a difference a president makes. If anybody ever doubted what difference a president makes, after seven years of George Bush, I think the doubts should be put to rest. So she's doing it because she's my daughter, but she's doing it because, as she says, she's a young American who cares about our future."

  1. Thank-you Hillary for not giving up. Your strength is inspiring and you can bring America out of the ditch that Bush has put it in. Your only as strong as your support, and you are strong. Dont listen to what the media says, you have only lost 1 of the races since March 5, and you can win the rest of them too.. including Oregon.

  1. She should be even sadder for Terry McAuliffe who cannot go back to his real job of selling poor-running cars to people who don't know any better.

  1. The question for Democrats and others concerned with the Democratic Party primary is then this — do you really want to let the worst-educated, least-knowledgeable and most bigotry-prone components of the voting pool (including those who stubbornly insist that Obama is a Muslim) control the direction of the party to the point of overriding the outcome in pledged delegates? Do you really want to give Hillary Clinton a pass in regards to her ignorantly racist supporters that you would never give to Obama in regards to Rev. Wright? And do you really want to say, as Hillary media proxy Paul Begala did, that a coalition that includes well-educated “eggheads” is somehow a bad thing?

Democrats used to promote education as a virtue to the point even of wanting to overspend government dollars on it at every opportunity. But now a large part of the party obstinately insists that the educated are those that should be sneered at and ignored. In short, they have embraced the anti-intellectualism long present on the far right. And none of Hillary’s supporters seem to mind.

And by the way, how do you explain Senator Obama's double-digit victories in overwhelmingly white states like Iowa (8 points over Clinton), Alaska (51 points), Colorado (34 points), Delaware (11 points), Idaho (62 points), Kansas (48 points), Minnesota (34 points), North Dakota (25 points) and Utah (18 points)?

  1. she is doing it because she is a clinton and has aspirations of her own. she knows how important it is to be president? she also knows what a president can do with interns while on the phone with foreign leaders. what a manipulative bunch. now, wipe away the crocodile tears.

  1. So all we really know is that her campaign manager told her to cry again, that somehow that gets more people to see beyond her robot-like stream of lies and see her as human.

Guess what, I'm not buying what you're selling!!!!!!!!

  1. I think that Chelsea is so smart. She knows what she is doing because she lived in the white where her dad was the president at that time. Because of this and because of Mrs. Clinton experience as a first lady, as a mother, as a Senador, also considering her experience and education, she should be the President of the United State. She demostrate the interest to really help people, also the interest in to fix the economy of this country. I think that she will have a great opportunity to demostrate all her knowledge. Beside she will well oriented and will be a great help from her husband. I will vote for her with no doubt.

  1. I am very happy to know that Hillary and her daughter are very close. I too am a mother of a daughter. I too love my daughter. I would not have it any other way, I think it is the thing to do.
This country would be much better if every mother would feel like Hillary about their daughter.

Go Hillary, we are backing you. Be our President. I try to follow all of your TV coverage.

  1. Oh, Lord... we've just seen the start of Chesea Victoria Clinton's presidential campaign. She'll be 35 and eligible in 2015, just in time for the 2016 election. We'll hear all about her "35 years of experience in Washington."

  1. Chelsea is doing this ONLY because she is your daughter and for no other reason. Don't tell us that she is doing this only as a young American. Some of us actually see through you for what you are.

  1. Good grief, is she crying AGAIN? Somebody get out the violins and the hankies. I guess if she were in the White House with that phone ringing at 3:00 a.m. she'd be crying then too.

  1. Chelsea is compaigning hard because she enjoyed the white house so much. Infact, all of them. I remember hearing president Bill Clinton saying that after living in the white house this long, its difficult to leave but they have to. So they want to get back. All the privileges etc.

  1. Actually most of the hillbillies are voting for Obama in all the red states that he won such as North Caolina, Missisippi, Maryland, Louisianna, Georgia, Minnesotta.. All those states are full of many more Republican-voting hillbillies then in the Democrat-voting blue states such as California, New York and the swing states Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Florida which are the states in which Hillary Clinton has many more supporters then Barack Obama.

  1. I am very worried about all the idiots who put their writings on this page. If you are of voting age, grow up. If not voting age still grow up. You can dislike someone with out being so redneck. Get down on your knees and pay you vote for the right person., Because we will need He or she for these trying times.

  1. puhleese....i'm so tired of this weirdo successfully manipulating the women and certain men of this country. these two women have lived at the public trough nearly their entire lives, yet hilary clinton continues to claw and claw at everyone and thing that stands in her way. if that doesn't work, suddenly the tears start. give me a break. this chick is a robot and her daughter thinks and acts as if she were a princess. i do not want a woman who cries every 5 minutes, even at the mention of her daughter's name, running this country. scary and utterly narcissistic.

  1. imagine if you were Hillary.
you've just tried your best... campaigned your damn whole heart out. and were the acknowledged candidate for the next pres. of the us.
    whew.... good gravy.
i'm sure that none of *us* can really understand that kind of pressure/situation.
and now she is going to lose. John Edwards just put in the last nail (he should have come out sooner).

but let's give her a break. it's clear that she's lost, she knows it, and is just sweeping up the dust-bunnies because that's what you have to do before you move out. it's a staged retreat.
i'm sure there's a lot more tears flowing than what the mickeymousemassmedia could report.

  1. HIllary you are a role model to mothers everywhere. Stand there thru thick and thin to protect your child. Drive on and NEVER NEVER give up because you know what is best for her. To that end I say stay the course, push on and those millions of us who support you and do so without tearing down the opposition with baseless, vulgar opinion. You are our hero and we will NEVER give up on you.

AS for Edwards, Kennedy, Rockefeller, Richardson, on and on. Let's see, old, white, established MALE politicians backing another male. The double standard that has prevailed in this race has been so ridiculous, sexist, and overwhelmingly obvious that it just about makes me want to lose it. How dare we voters NOT vote for the anointed one? How dare we question his judgment, elitism, associations and lack of experience? We must be racist. Give me a freaking break! I for one will NEVER vote for Obama and not lose a wink of sleep over that decision. 4 more years of "words", not action for the good of this country. No thank you!

  1. Just another way for the Clinton's to solidify a presence in the White house for future years. Why would they want to stay away? Lobbiest monies, paid speeches from foriegn governments, etc... Not bad for a family involved in crooked land deals (Whitewater) in Arkansas, and a husband who avoided impeachment while serving as President. I wonder how many lies were told on the campain trail while speaking for himself, I mean his wife. Hmmmm.....

  1. So where do we think Mr. Obama is getting all his money from to run the campaign that he has? Sounds a bit like 9/11 re-visited all over again he is as fake as they come. It will only get worse if that man makes it to the White house at least with Hillary we know what we have faults and all she will get my vote in a heart beat. She has been there done that and has the experince to prove it. I truly believe she has the country's best interest at heart . Everyone has their own agenda to some degree but experince can not be replaced. I can hear the tunnel being dug already by Obama's crew from Canada to the US to bring in more terroist. Or maybe with his steady flow of income he will have them flown in on a private Lear.

  1. HILLARY CLINTON:
    A) WILL USE ANY COMMENT, FACTUAL OR NOT TO MALIGN OBAMA, TO ACHIEVE HER OBSESSIVE GOAL OF BECOMING THE NOMINEE!!!
SHE HAS GOOD INTENTIONS/GOALS BUT HER TACTICS SHOW A LOW MORAL COMPASS. SHE HAS THEREFORE LOST MY SUPPORT!!!

    B) HER "STRENGTH" IS AN OBSESSIVE NON- STOP DRIVE THAT SHE CAN NO LONGER CONTROL - TO BECOME PRESIDENT. IT IS LIKE AN ALCOHOLIC WHO HAS TO HAVE THE NEXT DRINK.

    C) HER EMASCULATING TACTICS ARE OBVIOUS. SHE HAD MY VOTE
IN THE PRIMARIES. BUT HER TACTICS - OF THE ENDS JUSTIFY THE MEANS HAS EXPOSED HER AS AN "AT ANY COST OPPORTUNIST."

  1. Every person who says mean things about Senator Hillary is a fool. She has had 17 million people vote for her so they can't be all wrong. She should be the first lady president but there is more sexism than racism. There is still a "glass " ceiling for womean. If you don't make it Hillary, it won't be because you didn't give it your all. It will be because all the Afro American voters who liked your husband and would have voted for you have switch to Obama mama and all those white men who tell you that"she brilliant! She would make a great president but not in my time maybe my children's time "are sexist and blind. They want us in the kitchen and bedroom but not in the whitehouse. Good luck Senator Hillary Clinton if not for the Presidency, hopefully, the Vice- Presidency. You deserve that.

  1. I thought that Hillary was a nice lady until the debates. I can't believe how "ruthless" she has become. Her behavior as a lady is unacceptable. And Bill Clinton was telling people not to vote for the "black man" Barack i(in rural areas) He has forgotten that it was the black votes that put him in office. Both Hillary and Bill need to take a closer look at themselves. They obviously are not christians with their behavior. It will all come back to bite them in the "butt"
