Clinton says she's more determined than ever

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 13, 2008 09:11 PM

Hillary Clinton declared tonight that after her decisive win in West Virginia, "she is more determined than ever" to continue her campaign.

"Like the song says, it's almost heaven. I am so grateful for this overwhelming vote of confidence," she told supporters in Charleston, W. Va.

She dismissed pundits -- and an increasing number of Democrats -- who say it is nearly impossible for her to pass Barack Obama.

"They say 'give up, it's too hard, the mountain is too high,' but here in West Virginia, you know a thing or two about rough roads to the top of the mountain," Clinton told the crowd.

Clinton appealed again for more cash to keep the campaign going, and argued for seating disputed delegates from Florida and Michigan -- states which she won, but in which none of the Democratic candidates campaigned. The Democratic National Committee said it would strip Florida and Michigan of their delegates for holding their primaries too early.

The New York senator said that, while she deeply admires Obama, her case for the nomination is stronger.

"I am in this race because I believe I am the strongest candidate," she said.

But while Clinton held off on directly criticizing Obama, she had tougher words for presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, saying "With your help, I am ready to go head-to-head with John McCain to put our vision for America up against the one he shares with President Bush."

"The bottom line is this – the White House is one in the swing states and I am winning the swing states," Clinton said, once again arguing that she deserves the nomination because she has outperformed Obama in hotly contested general election states like Ohio and Pennsylvania.

  1. Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, Virginia - all swing states (7) Obama won. Swing states that Clinton's won: New Hampshire, West Virginia, Ohio, New Mexico (4). Who's won more?

My native state Pennsylvania hasn't gone 'Red' for 20 years, so even though it was close in '04, does it really count as a swing state? I guess we'll see.

  1. Hillary even now is spending megabucks she has not got to knee-cap Obama. Even with the unforgiving numbers, she is trying to buy the nomination because she believes she can count on Obama to pay off these debts in the end. Why should his campaign pay off the debts she has accumulated in smearing him, tearing him down, dividing the nation with her race and gender cards, her sniper fire lies, her insane Lady Macbeth violence? Americans do not reward malicious poltiticians who after all will not even go on to support him but will do everything to destroy his chances so she can run again in 2012. The super-delegates MUST stop her NOW!

  1. The so-called swing states that OBAMA won was history and voters begin to have buyers' remorse after 'Wright is wrong', bittergate..57 states OBAMA.

Who would vote for one that has lost his bearings while accusing others?

So OBAMA has showed his bottom one more time.

Keep up the good work Hillary. See you in the general election.

  1. She is showing the lack of judgment that makes her a less than adequate contender for the office of the president of the United States

  1. In one episode of the Mary Tyler Moore Show, as Ed Asner in the role of Lou says to Mary when he was interviewing her for a job at his TV station, "You've got spunk." Mary smiles demurely. Lou follows with, "I hate spunk!" Well, I'd say there's a time for spunk and there's a time to unify the party and get on to defeating McCain. So to Hillary, I say, "I hate spunk! Now get to work for Barack and help Democrats win the 2008 presidential election!"

  1. Wow! You rock Hillary! We knew the tide was turning your way, but this was HUGE! The DNC hasn't figured out yet that many democrats are poised to leave the "party" in droves if Obama gets the nomination. He is too inexperienced, elitist, far left and frankly lacks good judgment to lead this country in these very, very scary times. In the DNC's eyes, the voters really don't matter (see FL and MI - even though some other states moved up their primaries as well) and regard the media's support as somehow the public's support for their anointed candidate. DNC and media push for her to end the race and every single poll shows a strong difference of opinion with the public: let it play out.
Any objective, unbiased observer will tell you the push has been on since before January to "get behind" Obama and Hillary went on to win each time they counted her out. New Hampshire, OH, TX, PA, IN, each time "this is it", and she wins. Sometimes BY HUGE margins, like tonite.
I will NOT vote in the GE for Obama, and will write in her name instead. I can no more, in good conscience, vote for an inexperienced, racist (contracty to waht he and his supporters would have you beleive, the signs, words and hints are all there), politician then I could vote for a Republican. Being from FL, I am not alone in my stance that not counting my vote now, as it stands, means forget me in the GE. Good luck.
Hillary, my humble message to you is this: If the "boys club" in Washington can't take your strength, poise, intelligence and perseverance and the DNC chooses instead to nominate an inexperienced, slick, elitist politician, then PLEASE run as an Independent. Your 16 million supporters, to date, are behind you and we want YOU as our next President. Period

  1. To all the idiots out there that believe in a Clinton victory at the convention I think you need a reality check. To attempt to alter the rules and make 2025 2209 what ever, move on. VP aspiratations, OK sure, get lost that is not going to happen. As an Obama supporter I totally dispise you Billary you are attempting to ruin the party.

  1. "I am more determined than ever!" proclaims Senator Clinton.

It is sometimes difficult to judge Senator Clinton's sense of reality. Either she is delusional or she is playing a political game too subtle for the electorate to figure out. Is she angling for VP? (Hard to see why.) Secretary of State? (Maybe.) Or is this a case of ambition gone wild?

Senator Clinton has in many respects been a worthy candidate -- slash-and burn campaign style notwithstanding -- and probably would have been an able president. It is too bad that we could not have experienced presidents Obama
and Clinton. Senator Clinton's time, however, is now past.

  1. Hillary Clinton simply will not win the Democratic nomination. It couldn't be more straightforward than that. And for all her vile campaign tactics, messages that change with the weather, and desperate ploys to swing things her way (i.e. Michigan), she's going to come out of this race with a far worse reputation than she went into it.

I pity her, because clearly this was an outcome she was not mentally prepared for. And it's going to be a tough pill to swallow. But forget the good of the party, she needs to let go for the good of herself.

  1. Hilary Clinton thinks she deserves to be the President. And she wants the post of the most powerful person on earth very badly.
Hilary, Americans have refused to give you that chance through Democratic Party. May be it is the sign God is calling you somewhere else. The presidency is not forced in a democracy Hilary. Old moms stay at their homes and care for their grandchildren and attend the wedding of their beloved daughters the way Laura Bush is doing. Instead, you are dragging the beloved Chelsea into your worhiless campaigns while she should have been exchanging vows and you watching. That is the sacred ambition of any reasonable mom. Old mom, God is calling you somewhere else, he himself knows, but surely not towards the road to the White House.
Let Barack Obama lead and be in the bandwagon.
