Dole rips McClellan over book

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 30, 2008 06:56 PM

So Bob Dole, how do you really feel about Scott McClellan's tell-all book about his days in the White House?

The former senator and presidential nominee fired off an email -- first reported by The Politico -- today to the former White House press secretary, who has been all over television promoting his book.

"There are miserable creatures like you in every administration who don’t have the guts to speak up or quit if there are disagreements with the boss or colleagues. No, your type soaks up the benefits of power, revels in the limelight for years, then quits, and spurred on by greed, cashes in with a scathing critique.

"When the money starts rolling in you should donate it to a worthy cause, something like, 'Biting The Hand That Fed Me.' " Another thought is to weasel your way back into the White House if a Democrat is elected. That would provide a good set up for a second book deal in a few years."

"I have no intention of reading your 'exposé' because if all these awful things were happening, and perhaps some may have been, you should have spoken up publicly like a man, or quit your cushy, high profile job. That would have taken integrity and courage but then you would have had credibility and your complaints could have been aired objectively."

"You're a hot ticket now but don't you, deep down, feel like a total ingrate?"

Asked about Dole's missive, McClellan said on CNN this afternoon:

"I have a lot of respect for Senator Dole. I think he's a noble public servant, a veteran, and someone who has spent a lot of years actually trying to work across the aisle with some of the Democratic leaders, prior to these past 15 years, when the partisan warfare really broke out and the polarization of Washington was exacerbated.

"But, in terms of Senator Dole's comments, I am speaking up. I have had time to reflect and go back. And what I'm saying is sincere. I am trying to openly and honestly address these issues, look back at my experiences, and learn the lessons from where we went wrong. That's what the book is about. It's about what happened to take this administration so badly off course and what we can learn from it."

  1. While I understand what Dole is saying. When it comes to Integrity, truth is more important that timeing. McCllen is not a noble humanbeing, however i believe that the issues that he brings up in his book are tru and accurate. this is why as a republican, I am appaled at what GW and the Neiocons have done to our country and aoutr party.

    i solute mr Mc Cellen

  1. LOL -

Paul O'Neil - Bush appointed Republican Sec. of Treasury - "Liar".
Richard Clarke - Republican Bush I and Clinton holdover, Counter Terror czar - "Liar"
Scott McClellan - "miserable creature", "liar", etc...
All high-level insiders, and all - according to partisan idiots like Dole, "liars".

    Uh huh... (rolls eyes)

This president tried to militarily democratize the middle east at the expense of US tax payers, the lives of 4000 servicemen, and literally the "limbs" of tens of thousands of others. This despicable administration exaggerated the threat of Iraq, "exploited 911, and tried to tie bin Laden to Hussein - in other words "lied" to do it. But come out and state the tragically obvious? Modern conservatives consider this lying, and the truthtellers are "liars". No wonder this party is going the way of the WHIGS.

  1. Good on you Bob Dole. McClellan is a traitor and deserved your comments. Thank you for having the guts to speak up.

  1. To resort to name calling is what the republican party is all about. Old ways die hard and the truth some times hurt, but unless it be told no one knows where to start to look for it. I don't think history is going to be kind to this admisistration in the years to come. Let's turn the page and set this country on a road that leads to some place that don't hate us for who and what we stand for. An old soldier.

  1. Guess Bob and his wife are really upset because she being such
a high-profile wife, may have had further political hopes of her own.
She rode in on his coat-tails, Hillary rode in on Bill's coat-tails.
The republicans are desperately looking for anything to hang on Barack
Obama and prevent him from getting into office and cleaning up the
mess which Scott has spoken about in his book.
Bob Dole and his wife would never have the guts to speak out about
anything they may know( and you can bet , there's plenty.

  1. As a fellow veteran, I won't say much against Bob Dole. I think his biggest lie
was when he said, "I fixed Social Security." Social security nearly tripled
during the Reagan years (thanks to Dole) and then they bragged that they 'lowered" taxes. Bob is probably sorry he never had the integrity to come clean like Mac did. Pitifully, he was possibly high on Viagra and can't handle "truth."

  1. So don't read the book, Bob, but keep your slimy remarks to yourself. Like the Generals who disapproved of Bush's war strategy, Scott would have been smeared and shown the door. The book merelt outlines what thoughtful citizens already knew: Buss and his cabal are incompetent, dishonest thugs.

  1. McClellan obviously spoke much more generously and graciously of Dole than vice versa. Dole's remarks apparently came from the deep well of mean-spiritedness that has time and time again sluiced away any admiration I had begun to feel for the Senator. It's hard for me to believe I once thought of supporting the man's bid for the presidency.

As for McClellan, I believe he did the nation a service by confirming, from the point of view of a former insider, what a majority of Americans have come to believe about our current president and his administration. Most of McClellan's critics have accused him of cowardice for waiting until now to share the information in his book. Certainly It would have taken heroic courage to break with the White House and expose its deceit at a time when it still held undisputed sway over the affairs of state, not to mention over the fate of individuals who crossed it. Scottie doesn't have that kind of courage, but quite frankly, neither do his critics.

Morality and common decency don't demand that sort of courage from any person, but they do demand that he speak out for the public good when he comes to see how deeply his or her previous actions and associations compromised that good.

Scott McClellan fulfilled an ethical obligation by writing this book. Many of the key players in the Bush administration are so deep in self-deception they will probably never be able to acknowledge that fact, let alone admit their own culpability in the tragedies they have jointly visited upon this and other nations during the past eight years. Better a traitor to one's administration and party than to one's conscience and country!

Is McClellan a traitor to the President or is he a traitor to his Country?

  1. For those who are supporting McClellan, how do you know he's being truthful now?

Posted by Mike June 1, 08 08:39 PM
  1. I don't think McClellan is a coward for not coming forward sooner. He didn't know the facts back then. Bush and his cronies lied to McClellan and used him to help sway the public. I'm glad he's coming forward now and confirming what we all believe to be a horrible web of lies by our leaders.

  1. One fool wrote a book for personal gain and many more fools gave him their family savings oops too late. The United States is still the number one country in the world in all aspects thanks to the President and his administration.

  1. My respect for Bob Dole is at an all-time low with this comment. But I guess we should learn not to expect anyone in theRepublican party to tell the truth or to even recognize it when they hear it. I am neither Democrat or Republican but with all the Bush administration has done in the past seven years does anyone really have trouble believing McClellan? I think not.

  1. Bob Dole is right, McCellen is an ingrate who wrote the book for greed spurred on by a liberal publisher.. He is no better than John Dean who is the scum of the earth. People like John Dean and McCellen are cowards who will do anything for money and would turn in their own mothers if they thought it would benefit their cause.. Good ridence to this prick ..

  1. Bob Dole is a bitter, failed, pathetic has-been politician who chose to appear in TV commercials getting an erection (along with his dog!) over Britney Spears when she was a teenager... rather than tell the truth about the horrors of George W. Bush of which he was very much aware.

There are thousands of dead American soldiers, over 300,000 more wounded, because of both of these two men -- but only one has had the guts to admit it.

God bless Mr. McClellan. God damn Mr. Dole.

  1. McClellan has confirmed the TREASON committed by Bush, Cheney and their PNAC war criminals.

Those sliming McClellan do so ONLY because they can't REFUTE THE FACTS that the Bushies are traitors to everything the USA once stood for.

  1. McClellan and his spilling the beans:
It takes a liar to know a liar. Case closed over the dead bodies of 1,000s, and trillions wasted, and chaos for so many years to come. But, Rove sure did his triangulation , and politics of fear to game the elections, at the expense of the Nation. Oh, and for a kicker, oil prices moving to $ 200/ barrel, mortgage foreclosures hitting staggering numbers, unemployment skyrocketing, and
the Sheiks in the midEast are laughing their ass off at Cheney, Bush, and CONDI, seeing them as suckers and moronic fools, who they toyed with as
they see crude oil as the ace in the hole
How did it all go so terrible down hill ? In the wake of 911, some were calling for a pound of flesh, revenge, a climate of fear fed on more fear. Bush had to prove, he had the big cajones, don't mess with Texas, after all Saddem tried to kill his PA, George Sr..... Pay backs of the Bushes, Shock and AWE, launched... It all got out of control, and Kerry flipped, and flopped,(as did most in the U S Senate) and the Congress rubber stamped the Bush Operation Krazy : Now--- you will pay the piper, pay a big price.
Wake up people, don't you see what has happened to America ?
Now you will pay the prices, the chickens are embedded in the economy, they are coming home to roost: Food prices going bonkers, along with fuel prices, the USA economy is on shakey grounds... Wake up People.
The Shieks see you going into 3rd world status, you standard of living is on a fast track: on a very slippery slope, Bush took it all-- OVER THE EDGE, the POINT of no return. But, you have a flag lapel, RIGHT, to prove you are with Rove.
