Edwards backing Obama
John Edwards, the self-described son of a mill worker, endorsed Barack Obama this evening, lending his working class bona fides to the Democratic front-runner having trouble with those voters.
"The Democratic voters of America have made their choice and so have I," Edwards said at an Obama at a rally in Grand Rapids, Mich., a critical general election battleground. "There is one man who knows in his heart it is time to create one America, not two, and that man is Barack Obama."
Obama said he felt badly about bypassing the Michigan primary in January (the candidates agreed not to campaign in the state because it held its primary earlier than the national party allowed), so wanted to bring "something special" -- before he introduced "my friend John Edwards."
Obama took to a nearby stool, beaming from ear to ear, as Edwards took the stage to Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising," a song about recovering from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and raucous cheers. But when he started to praise Clinton, the crowd booed.
"It is hard to get up there and fight when the odds go against you," he said. "She cares deeply about the working people in this country."
When Edwards said the nomination battle would be over soon, the crowd cheered
Edwards, a former North Carolina senator and the 2004 vice presidential nominee, won 19 delegates before dropping out of the race in late January. But he won 7 percent of the vote in Tuesday's primary in West Virginia, which Obama lost to Clinton by 41 percentage points.
Edwards had hinted in recent days that he supported Obama over Hillary Clinton. In one interview, he appeared to slip and say he voted for "him" in the North Carolina primary.
While not stunning, the endorsement is another stinging blow to Clinton and another sign that the Democratic establishment is coalescing behind Obama. She had courted his endorsement as well, going as far to pledge to appoint a "poverty czar" to follow through on the issues Edwards championed.
“We respect John Edwards, but as the voters of West Virginia showed last night, this thing is far from over,” Clinton's campaign chairman, Terry McAuliffe, said in a statement.
Republican National Committee chairman Robert M. “Mike” Duncan released a statement: “Barack Obama and John Edwards share an out-of-touch agenda that would raise taxes on families while cutting funding for our troops. The only question is why didn’t Edwards endorse sooner? Edwards’ endorsement of a candidate he previously blasted as inexperienced, hypocritical, and lacking substance will not help Obama with voters looking for real change.”

YES!
I know why John Edward is endorsing Obama now is because he (John Edward )may recieved some kind of revelation about Obamas unelectability.Of course he will make it known of his support for Obama by just mentioning it but there is something bigger than Obama John Edwards may already know. And that something Mr Obama wouldn't want to know himself even a whisper on his ear.It will be Hilliary Clinton winning the nomination and lets just leave it like that.
I see that even John Edwards is losing his grip on reality!
finally.
she's nuts at this point.
Too bad he didn't do it on Monday, Obama could have used a few of his votes in WV. But finally!!!
just a matter of time. looking good
skmj,
excellent point. I think you are completely correct.
As for the rest of the universe, this is long overdue. I think Edwards should have endorsed a long time ago. I can't figure out why he, or Richardson for that matter, waited so long. At this point he is merely recognizing the obvious and not taking the slightest step forward as a leader -- not that that is his job, of course. At any rate this endorsement by a hard-working white guy should go a long way toward wrapping things up for Obama.
It is unfortunate that Edwards came out. It is just another example that the Democrat Party mouths support for women when in reality they are a male dominated group. Senator Clinton has the courage to fight this bias and certainly has more of a resume than does Senator Obama. Perhaps Reverend Sharpton's threat that there will be a racial protest at the Democrat convention if Obama does not win is enough to pressure Howard Dean and the boys to force Senator Clinton out of the contest. They might change their minds if they found out that the thinking women might just abandon them and vote Republican.
Shame on him.
At least we now see his true colors. He is as politcaly expedient and ruthless as Obama.
One wonders why he took so long. He could have done this sooner and given Obama a clear cut win. Its too late for that now. The math doesn't work for either candidate.
I guess John Edwards has turned Republican - he's doing nothing but helping the Democrats lose in November. I see his endorsement as nothing more than trying to buy himself a shot at the VP slot, should my party be stupid enough to actually nominate Obama. Oh well, Edwards & Obama - 2 losers going down together in the General Election.
And to think I used to like John Edwards. Now that he's helping us get a President McCain - not so much.
How sad, when a man that most people took for someone who stood by his word, does a turnaround. It was just recently when Sen Edwards said he would not endorse anyone until the people spoke or till all the votes were in.
Here Hillary get's was overwhelmingly voted for in West Virginia and you would
think that most of these so called delegates would wait until all the votes were in before they endorsed anyone.
I GUESS OUR VOTES ARE NOT SO IMPRTANT WHEN IT COMES TO POLITICS AND THESE DELEGATES!!!!!!
Guess I will stay home on election day!
Shocking...isn't it? A younger handsome man endorses the other younger handsome man over the older, more experienced woman. Forget it Hillary...they'd just as soon see you "baking cookies in the kitchen" than make history!
If people would just read instead of watching pastor-gate, they would know that Obama dug his way out of modest beginnings, fought for blue-collar rights since Harvard (both black AND white) and took the high road at every critical turn.

3. He judges men's intentions, the time and the place, not just their words. In 2002, Saddam Hussein provoked this nation in to war with just words - “this will be the mother of all wars" Today's nuts like Iran's Ahmadinajad, N. Did any of you notice ? -- Obama received many more votes in West Virginia than McCain's total.
Wow, a lot of hate on this board tonight. I was going to try and bring some sanity, but I might just as well try flying a paper airplane to the moon. You guys are crazy.
I'm a Hillary supporter who's getting more frustrated by the day. I look at
Obama with a lot of suspicion, my main take on him is that he's a terrific
self-promoter, and this this election is all about him making history, as
opposed to really looking at fixing the country. Hillary's health care position
is better for the average American, and it's an important criteria for me.
"Change"? Not without real details. One America? I'd rather have
someone who'll fight the psycho-right wingers. And I think there's an
awful lot of sexism in this choice too - the young man over the older
woman. I'll be voting, but not for President, I guess...
This is breaking news all over the place....who really gives a rats arse....
Edwards is looking for a seat somewhere in the WH. Otherwise, why would he support an unqualified, racist candidate.
I started as an Edwards supporter and watching him tonight, wished all over again that the race had ended differently. I'm glad that he's supporting Obama but wish he would have done so months ago. Yes, I get that this was timed to help negate the WV primary outcome, but Edwards could certainly have helped Obama's chances in WV and other states if he'd not only endorsed him, but campaigned for him. I've got to wonder about his seemingly opportunistic timing.
As for the comment made upthread about Hillary not getting props because she's a woman - well, the same could certainly be said for Obama and the fact that he's black. (And exit polls bear this out.)
as a 50/50 born american, I notice more racists in america than I thought. shame on you . Barak mom is white. it seems you all forget that .
In my opinion, an Obama-Edwards team would be able to win the White House. Edwards as VP would favourably offset the media description of Obama as a black guy. Sofar, I have yet to read a newspaper that refers to Obama as "half-white" which he truly is in reality. Why ignore his white side? Obama has inherited half the genes of his mother. Colorwise, of course, it shows that he also carry traits of his Kenyan-born father. Gender and race considerations aside, Edward's social platform coincides with Obama's. I am not sure if Edwards is interested in a VP job, but if he wins, Obama should seriously consider him for a very senior cabinet post in which Edwards can use his experience as a litigation lawyer. Both are of the younger generation, offering high hopes for the future generation of Americans.
EDWARDS?ENDORSES OBAMA??? lOOKS LIKE MCCAIN WILL BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT. DEMOCRATRS YOU SCREWED UP AGAIN. IF HILLARY GETS THE NOMINATION THEN THE DEMOCRACTS GET MY VOTE. OBAMA IS NOT EXPIERENCED ENOUGH TO BE PRESIDENT.
John who?
Who really cares about what Edwards thinks? He is a pretty boy phony.
One big phony to another. C'est tout
OK people need to STOP saying that Obama will LOSE in Nov.....and that all these Superdelegates who back Obama are ensuring that McCain will win....
Shutup!!!! ALL polls say that nationally, Obama or Clinton will WIN in Nov.....
Ok, so your first choice (Hillary) is not going to be the nominee....if you are DEM, vote DEM....show YOUR true colors!!!!
Its a PATHETIC excuse if someone votes for McCain because Hillary did not get the nomination.....you'd rather vote for Bush's 3rd term then let YOUR candidates opponent......its not life or death, Obama and Hillary have 95% the same ideas about the country, both of them have copied each others plans because they are both people of common sense and good ideas......dont screw over the country because YOUR candidate diddnt get in.....Think Team!!!!
After his being SO BADLY BEATEN by Hillary in West Virginia, Obama must have offered Edwards something VERY enticing! Just Tuesday morning on MSNBC, Edwards said he would wait til the primaries ended. A REAL man of his word!! Obama should be "thrilled"! He now has the support of Kennedy, Kerry, Edwards, & Richardson. All men who couldn't make the grade!! GO HILLARY!!!
in response to the "Posted by Jim Irving May 14, 08 06:05 PM" quote...making this about man vs. woman is ridiculous. As if they are doing it because she is a woman, I don't buy it. She is all for the gas tax relief over the summer; i am not. this is just the one example that comes to mind when i think this has nothing to do with the sex of a candidate. i am a woman, and i have not liked hillary clinton, as the wife of the president bill clinton or the woman running for senator, or the senator of new york. but when she was running i gave her a chance, because of some of the things she stands for or solely because i am a woman, AND wouldn't it be great to have a female president? WELL, she disappointed me, and she disappointed me good....so i don't think it has to do with the fact that she is a woman.
if the democratic party is smart enough they will realize they need to unite all fronts ASAP, and pick a candidate, and win this next election. that is their real problem. Obama stands a better chance at beating mccain and that is that.
And, in all fairness, my vote says he is the better candidate.
this is written by a registered independent, who has voted both democrat and republican.
can the feminazi's just realize that obama is a better candidate? the more you bring up the gender differences the greater the perceived difference between men and women. obama is just better than her, it has nothing to do with him being a male. i would argue it is the folks that highlight gender differences at every turn that retard the progress of the very group they support.
i am of the opinion it is nearly impossible for mccain to win in november. the straight talk express has lost its way in trying to win over the folks on the far right. there is too much at stake to continue divided. we have to rally around obama and the donkey's in all senate and congressional voting.
I am disappointed that John Edwards endorsed now. When Hillary was making a point with her convincing victory, he stepped in to try to minimize the affect it could make in the primary election. Obama is "talking" about a different kind of politics, but how he is conducting his compaign is still the same old politics. Most of his victories were with caucuses - organizing small groups of voters. Hillary has won the contests where the popular votes count. It is a close race that is up for grabs. Neither can win the total delegate vote with a commanding lead. The political commentators should be giving her more credit. Whom ever wins will need the support of the other candidate and his/her supporters in order to win in November. A Democratic victory in November is essential!
john edwards couldn't even carry his own state when he was running for vp 8 years ago. it's the old boys network. I have always been a democrat but I will vote just to get mccain in so Hill can run in 2012. I'll never vote for kennedy or kerry either. they all stink.
The sad joke for the democratic party is the Obama will not get elected by an America that voted for the incredibly flawed George Bush twice.
As pathetic as Bush is he knows something about America that Obama hasn't quite grasped yet. Hillary would be a better bet in November.
experience does count and no matter what the delegates say Obama does not have the experience. I will vote for McCain or might just stay home.....
time for hillary to get out....she is just a republican in democrat clothing anyways.
It's just a matter of time, Barack Obama will be the Democratic candidate. Hillary has sooo much negative baggage. From the Rose Law firm, Whitewater scandal, Madison Savings and Loan she helped sink. People have a way of dying around her who are dissenters. The death of Vince Foster, still questioned, investigation squashed. She can't manage her campaign finances, she's broke today, and payroll is coming up this Thursday. All her funding requests are to reimburse herself of the personal loan she made to the campaign. She's fiscally irresponsible, how can she manage affairs of this country?
I hate to burst peoples bubble about the Pres. race, even if Obama wins he will run into the prejudices against change in DC. Remember Jimmy Carter the so called worst Pres. ever? The political establishment blew him up and they will blow up Obama first chance they get and all through his term.
We would need 5 terms of Obama to make the kind of changes we all want. The people who really control this country will not let that happen! The bastards.
Edwards' endorsement doesn't mean a thing. It's just the Obama strategy of announcing another endorsement whenever Clinton starts to look good again as she did when she won in West Virginia.
Nobody cares what Edwards thinks. He's probably just looking for a spot as attorney general in an Obama administration. It's the same with many of these other endorsements, like George McGovern or Bill Richardson or our own Ted Kennedy. I really think these endorsements are overblown. I assume Edwards released his delegates to support Obama, which might actually mean something.
Just more of the 'Good Ole Boy' network trying to supress the femine! WHat else is old news!
it is the comments like bostonderm and so many others that divide the country not the candidates. try not to be so ignorant before you make statements as the only one who looks like an uneducated idiot is yourself.
fine to be passionate about who you support but have facts to support your reasoning. for example, clinton's campaign is now claiming they are ahead in the popular vote. the only example this is true is when they add in the votes for florida and michigan and do not count the votes of all the caucuses that were done in a legal manner. so you support hillary great, and why, what about her makes you passionate? she wants to change the rules of an election, have votes counted where no one else was on a ballot. she passionately spoke about avoiding sniper fire in a prepared speach all over the country countless times, and then claimed she couldn't remember that it didn't happen. how is that an experienced leader? she reads prepared speeches that claim she and her daughter had to escape sniper fire over and over and then makes a joke about it? in actuality it makes her a blatant liar. so thus far she has qualities of a liar and a cheater. those are FACTS based on her own actions. she is devisive and polarizing.
so obama does not run around the country touting and exagerating experience he may not have, however he has convinction, honesty and integrity. when you think about people who did not have any significant experience but changed the world as it is today what does that amount to. JFK, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks just a few, no real experience just very passionate about their beliefs and had an ability to bring people together for a common cause. we need leadership.
in the end is at about hillary or obama or is it about YOU? whose platform is going to stand for what YOU believe? if obama does not wind up being the nominee will I vote for mccain? NO. it would be ignorant and against my beliefs. if obama does become the nominee would i vote for him yes. what party stands for where you want to see the country head? educate yourself folks, stop acting like this is 5th grade and who you like more or else you will defect to something you do not even believe in? grow up, if that is your mentality, you should not even exercise your right to vote.
I think he did a smart thing,I am happy that he woke up.
If Hillary doesn't win the primary I hope she goes with the independant party.
Goodbye Hillary
This party is so totally male dominated at this point even a superstar like Hillary has to try and win with her hands tied behind her back and the whole Democratic male establishment trying to tape her mouth shut. This nomination feels like it is fixed.....let's do anything but elect the best and most qualified candidate because that one happens to be a woman!!!!!!! WE Will Lose for sure now.....I won't vote for the first time in my whole life......even if Hillary is VP....she shouldn't have to take the second spot, she is the real candidate and if things were normal, he'd be smart enough to work with her for 8 yrs and then run on his own, insuring a long run for the party.....I say McCain doesn't even have to run.....I am one of the 50% of her supporters that will not vote for Obama and thus the Democratic party!!!
I am trying very hard to get behind and like Obama - he just strikes me as insincere. And yes, I am a middle aged white woman - who has voted and supported the Democratic party my entire life. I will vote for Obama, but my heart will not be in it, and it appears that nobody in "power" in the democratic party really cares about my thoughts or feelings. Hiliary is a tough cookie, but sometimes that is what is needed. I feel marginalized and sad.
A really decisive guy.
I guess my voice has been silenced by the the proper decorum police!
Edwards' endorsement validates that Barack is the right candidate for the Democratic party AND and right man for president. The fact that both are against accepting lobbyists' money is so key. Barack also can sell a message of change to the American people and that's what's needed to move things forward. If the people buy into it, their elected officials will have to as well. Hillary is a bright, driven, experienced individual, but she has too many weaknesses to make her a strong candidate or president. Nothing would energize a Republican fundraiser or voter more than a Clinton running for president.
I am so happy that Obama is leading, and I see Edwards' endorsement as an action to unify the democratic party. I am a democrat and I would be reluctant to vote for Senator Clinton. And in spite of the polls I am an older white woman. I feel what this country needs most at this time is inspiring leadership, and Obama has it.
WOW!! I really believe this election is more about the who than the what and it should be about the what.
We need to end the war. We need to improve our economy for ALL. We must fix education and health care and the environment.
Frankly, I do NOT want another Clinton in the White House. To me, a middle aged white woman, Hillary is just another good old boy. She is divisive and a real politician and I mean that. I come from Massachusetts but now live in NY. Why did she move to NY? Did she really care about being our senator? I think not. Her plan was always to move back to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Her "EXPERIENCE" is not what I want in our next President.
I believe Barack Obama represents real change. I believe he is intelligent, thoughtful and a person who will work tirelessly to bring people together. I am glad he was endorsed by John Edwards. Obama has the popular vote.
Power to the people!!
The overuse and misuse of supelatives allows the truth to be candy coated ear tickling for the self perceived elites. The real problem in this country. People know everything and nothing at the same time. It all boils to whatis in it for me? Not what's in it for the poor, those who cannot elocute sucessfully for their own good. Not what's in it for the future of everyone, but what's in it for me.
We are the most selfish nation on earth, in that regard we do lead the world.
President starts personal war.
Doctors and mental health professionals want to be absolved of serious mistakes, while expecting a higher standard for the rest of us.
The list goes on and on.
We are not outraged until it hits us. That's why the wealthy cry about taxes, while they have well more than enough to make sure they have roof over their head and food in their bellies. What is wrong with these pictures.
Iraq war vets are still sleeping under bridges, if our government treats these people this way right in front of you, what are they doing behind your back?
Endorsements are meaningless. Is anyone's vote really going to be swayed because Edwards is choosing Obama?
Edwards you are a gender bashing jerk and you will pay a "bitter" price for this. Just lost another Democrat and you lost any chance of getting involved in politics again, in any way. How could you when your wife supports Hillary. Obama scares me for many reasons. Not just the flag thing, but many more issues. Yes she win big and thank you West Virginia for keeping our greatest hope for November alive and well. I'm so sick of "do the math". It was less than 3 months ago the pundits said Obama cannot win by math alone. Thump, 41 points, thump, West Virginia. You do the math. Obama cannot win in the general election. We Democrats need to do the right thing and nominate Hillary. She can win in November without Obama and he can't win without her (not that he would ask or she would accept). Just like some men, pundits, DNC, news media, to ask the woman to make him President. Please wake up, voters left and superdelegates, it's not over yet, and Hillary will win and prevail in the end!!! Also, please donate to Hillary at:
www.hillaryclinton.com
As sad as it is....McCain wins....the Clinton lie machine dies......ding dong...
Barack needs to dry the wetness behind his ears........and get a life..
Things don't look good here people
Of course it's about appearances as much as it is issues. Of course they all change their minds depending on what the polls say. Of course they're all in it to get elected. Of course they're all thin in the character department. Of course they all "misspeak" and waffle.
Has everyone forgotten that these are politicians we're talking about?
It's just a matter of time, Barack Obama will be the Democratic candidate. Hillary has sooo much negative baggage. Spoken like a true "Republican"
Go Hillary...to a shrink! !!! I'm with young at heart. The Hillary fiasco is over...her false bravado is old, tired and quite frankly pitiful. She is a narcissist, delusional ,and a far cry from what this country could ever live with. John Edwards let her have it in the debates way back in November for her nonsense . I think his timing was perfect to offer his support to Obama today!
Hillarys West Virginia "win" speech was so removed from the reality of the big picture that I was embarassed as a woman, educated voter and business owner. Let the voting go on...in the final analysis she will lose. Obama will win and lead this country to a higher standard of politics.
it only took Edwards how many months to decide who to endorse. he must be real certain about this endorsement
Yes, thank you Edwards. I don't think it has anything to do with gender. I've listened to them both and seen how they run their campaigns. Hillary was far more negative -- she seems like she would do anything to hurt Obama and the party so she could get elected. Except for having to defend himself, Obama took the high road. Hillary has been given the benefit of the doubt many times -- if Obama had lost so many states as Hillary did, he would have been thrown out long ago.
Obama seems to have the better temperament for president. He does have detailed plans, and has spoken about them many times of late -- but still people like to repeat the old tired thing about lack of substance. That was early in the race when he did his inspiring speeches, and saved the nitty gritty for his web site. Now he's doing both, but those who have already rejected him don't want to give him a chance.
Thankfully, enough people are perceptive enough to see that Obama is the one who will beat McCain, and bring this country together. Edwards will be a help in this.
Edwards certainly doesn't have to worry about a modern day 'Profiles in Courage' being written about him....now that Obama has locked up the nomination, he is just looking for a role in the Obama administration.....I was hoping to get back in the White House but now realize that I will have to keep giving speeches to lobbyists for millions of dollars, particularly foreign governments, as they pay the best! But if I don't do that, who will lend money to my wife's campaign, particularly now that David Geffen has realized we lie all the time....
Blogger is bias do be careful what you write.
Did anyone notice that the herald buried Hillary's W.V. lambasting of Obama on page 11. It's time for the people to vote not the media. Let the votes be counted in all the states and lets see where the chips fall.
The Democrat primaries are broken. We know that because of the closeness in this race. We have proportional allocation of delegates -- rather than winner take all -- so that everyone gets a voice -- but now we hate that everyone is not saying the same thing -- and Edwards has caved to pressure to help close this down because -- uh oh -- looks like a whole lot of voters are saying NO to Obama.
I dont' think I'm leaving the Democratic party. I think it's leaving me. I am NOT going to be a good little girl. I am a woman who is part of large bloc of voters that you are going to miss.
Anyone for a third way? The National Women's Party?
Oh, John, you're such a decisive person.
if hillary is out of the race i'm voting republican.. it's sad, but true.
Ha ha! One good turn deserves another!!
I'm happy for Obama and his determination to become the president
of my country but, he should recognize his other grandmother who
lives in Africa with his sisters and brothers.
AWESOME ---PEOPLE ARE FINALLY COMING TOGETHER TO RE CREATE WHAT WAS ONCE GREAT AND RID US OF THE SELFISH LUNATIC FRINGE THAT ARE REPLUBLICANS
Ol John gets his money from fat cats, and still can't match Obama. McCain has been involved in several scandals over the years, not just the influence peddling Keating fiasco. Do a search using his name and Navajo to learn of an earlier land grab for his buddies. Then just to stay current look at the land sway for his supporters in Arizona, Fred Ruskin, Wes Guillett, Kurt Davis & M. Jimenez. Good ready for development federal land for remote grassland and ponderosa pine forest. Quid pro quo.
Just hastens the inevitable. He would have endorsed him for the general anyway
I support Hillary and I dont know anything about Obama and he is just like Mr.Bush I would say. Sure he can learn the experience in the first four yrs but you and me need to pay the tuition for him and that s for sure IF he is elected(look at our Mr.bush). If he is elected again in the second term(since people are stubborn from time to time), haha, you know what he is going to do whatever he wants( mr. bush is our mirror)...he is going to BOMB "terrorists" along the Pakistan–Afghan border line.
In any case your next President is the guy standing next to Edwards in the photo. Learn to appreciate differences, dude. Go Obama. We believe in you can help us change and turn things around.
I read somewhere that the Obama campaign is spreading out endorsements intentionally. I'm an Obama supporter, this does seem a bit calculated but this is what political campaigns do.
I just hope the majority of the Democratic party isn't as IDIOTIC AS THE PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD!! Hillary's a great candidate, but she blew her chance and now it's time to move on! I can't believe some Dems are ready to screw over the country and not vote Obama out of pure spite!
PEOPLE....GET OVER IT!!!!!!! We now need to make sure the Dems take the White House, even if your favorite candidate isn't the nominee. Hillary understands this and so should you!!!
Trust me, you'll be a lot happier with Obama as Pres than Mccain!
This is hope squared. These guys have little kids, and they want a better world for those children. All of our children will benefit.
As for the good ol' boys, Hillary represents that as much as her husband. See Nader's article "Eight More Years?" She just does not represent change.
Edwards came out at the right time. All the way to the White House baby!!
John who?
Why?
What?
Thanks, all I needed was a looser to come out now and help my fake vision of hpe and change (I hope to Change America to a Muslim Hell Hole).
IT IS QUITE SIMPLE. THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WILL BE NEITHER CLINTON OR OBAMA. THE NEXT U.S. PRESIDENT IS jOHN MCCAIN.
IT IS NOT THE RIGHT TIME TO MAKE HISTORY BY ELECTING A WOMAN OR AN AFRICAN AMERICAN PRESIDENT, IT IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT TO ELECT A MAN WHO WILL CONTINUE TO PROTECT US, HAVE EXPERIENCE AND A HEAVY WEIGHT. AMERICA HAS TO RESTORE ITS GLOBAL POSITION IN THE WORLD, AND THE ONLY PERSON FIT TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL, IS UNFORTUNATELY NEITHER HILLARY CLINTON OR BARACK OBAMA, IT IS JOHN MCCAIN.
edward's endorsement is forgettable....Hillary has 3 more lives ahead of her....sometimes it's better to get smaller to get bigger again...be careful what you wish for....McCain 08'
Hey folks- Obama is the future of this great nation. The new generation must be heard and be visible. Please help this country go forward. Keep up our image and reputation. We are Americans need to articulate a coherent vision for how this country can compete in and benefit from a globalized world.
Enough is enough!
Who Cares? Scream DEAN manipulated his way on top of DNC, and together with "bitter Boston Ultra Liberals" Took Party Away From Titular Head and Standard bearer Ex-President Willim Jefferson Clinton and Senator Hillary Rodman Clinton, all because Teddy got Mad when Hillary did not genuflect at JFK Altar.... by saying "It Took A President, Lyndon Johnson, to Pass Civil Rights Leginslation".
What arrogance "To Ignore Reality" that NOT A SINGLE "Ultra Liberal HAS WON AN ELECTION (for president) SINCE JFK: RFK was killed, McGovern, Gene MacCarthy, Dukakis, Gore, and Kerry -- ALL LOSERS! Only Moderate Democrats Carter and Clinton have been successful!
Because of this Boston Manipulation, We have Obama, who Only won Red States thanks to Karl Rove directed 24 State "Republicans For Obama" organizations and "Democrat for a Day" Crossover TRICKS?
Obama benefitted from this DNC political manipulations and privilege, and has tried hard to both have and use it against Clinton. Though he could not look white, he could act white... and since he looked black, Obama had a head start at being accepted among blacks. But there was that whole "acting black" complication. And he has deftly played the "Race Card" to his benefit.
How to establish one's black cultural bona fides, then? Obama decided to associate with authentically black institutions, including the black church community. Unfortunately, in supporting Jeremiah Wright's alienating creed of black liberation theology, Obama made a terrible (perhaps fatal) error.
So this day, when Obama has to choose between defending his 20-year ties to the radical mentor who helped him climb the black power ladder, or abandoning that mentor in order to pander to dumbfounded whites who thought he was "one of us" ... well, this day could have been predicted.
It's a shame that the Democrats will almost certainly kick off the general election season with a candidate so weary, so wounded, so weighed down by his old albatrosses, that he simply doesn't have a prayer against a unified and invigorated Republican Party.
Since this debacle is self-inflicted, it's hard to be sympathetic to Dems, given that they should have vetted Obama with open eyes and yet did not -- until now. And now is just too late.
WHAT experience does Hillary have besides being the wife of a President and repeatedly TALKING ABOUT having "experience"! I can't believe how ignorant people are to just fall for her words!
They are probably the SAME people who still believe the Bush/Cheney claim that the fall of theTwinTowers were their "reasoning" for starting his Iraq war for oil!
READ #14 above about REAL experience and leadership! Then, squelch your damned obvious color prejudice!! YOU could have been born black too!! It is no credit to a racially prejudiced person to accidentally be WHITE!! THINK a little and open your minds!! Ignorance is what's wrong with our whole world today!
Great post, Martin L. Morrow! People seem to "forget" little details like that.
Maybe the endorsement will help with the so-called "hard-working whites", but it's hard to say.
What has disappointed me most is the racist undercurrent. According to the exit polls 20 per cent of the West Virginia voters said they would not vote for a black candidate. I heard a voter interviewed on TV who said something similar to "We aren't prejudiced, we just don't like them."
I have to admit I'm shocked; I thought we had moved beyond that kind of thing. I'm beginning to think that "hard-working whites" is a euphemism for white bigots who mostly don't want to admit that's what they are.
The Hillary supporters need to realize something. Yes, she won West Virginia, but what effect that has is minimal at best. Obama never even expected to win WV. He pretty much (as well as the media) conceded the race there long ago. Hillary would have to win over 90%-10% in every remaining state to even catch up to Obama, and that's not going to happen.
Hillary is done. She's not done because she's a woman, she probably would have gotten the vote in any other election, but she ran against the strongest Democratic candidate we've had in years. He is reaching out to a populace that is totally buying what he's selling. Obama will make a great president. He has thepotential, the potential to be an amazing or legendary president. In baseball they talk about rookies having upside. Upside is the potential that player has. High upside means they have a lot of great possibility and can possibly grow into a much better player. Obama has a ton of upside. He is the candidate with not a ton of a track record. This is why some people are afraid of him, but experience in politics is not always such a good thing. The founding fathers had no experience as professional politicians.
Let's just all get behind the uniter and hope we can finally agree with the conservatives on some issues and not just "kick their butts" or whatever. Obama can reach out to them and hopefully make some real changes.
WHY IS THIS A BIG DEAL ? JOHN EDWARDS was supposed to HELP vs JOHN CHANEY,, the young handsome vs the old guard. CHANEY undressed him when they had debates, he looked like a fool. He sucked. He didn't help KERRY , why would this help OBAMA ? America doesn't like LOSERS . Might as well put AL GORE on the VP ticket eh ? stupid democrats. Finding a way to lose what should be an easy election after the media has conviced the country that BUSH has ruined the country. America doesn't want their TAXES raised, and we like our troops fighting a war on SOMEONE else's soil, not ours. When will the dems learn?
With all the nonsence I have been reading, you all have to remember that McCain hasn't started on Obama as yet. He has said nothing about Hillary so far. McCain will attemp to cut up Obama badly enough to let Hillary get the election. My theory is that those delegates can and will change their minds any time they want. Just wait a while and see what happens before getting all fired up. There are many states to go. And by the way, who gets the job when interviewd most of the time? The more experienced one.......
Edwards doesn't look happy in the photos I've seen today, just resigned. He's frowning and artificially smiling at the same time. As my Republican friends are saying, Obama may become the nominee but he will never become president.
THANK YOU!!! I am grateful for you John Edwards for stepping up last night and
endorsing the man who is the right one for President! I am proud of John Edwards, who I used to consider timid, cowardly and a little mouse, or not manly!
What John did for Obama showed me that Edwards does have have some
backbone and sense! Love you John for joining Obama. MIss Hillary deserved a big slap in her face as this happened. She has been so busy slapping their faces, it is time she got one big stinging blow back. Both Hillary and Billy need anger management classes. They have had their day to prove in the White House what character-less snobs they both are! Hillary can go hit the " bottle" now, and take a few shots of tequila for this huge shot of an endorsment she lost, drink up Hillary and billy! and take your tranquilizers!! It is way! past time you leaving with your dignity intact as your own party told you to do! Now you are going to crawl out....... Hah! You reap what you have sown for years Hillary and Billy! Good-Riddance!
Who cares? Edwards endorsement is meaningless.I think he will do anything to get into the WH even if it is second best (VP).I feel that Hillary should stick it out till the end .This just shows that she has the courage and strength to take the pressure as President. Obama is not the right person for the job but could be later on with more experience. The country is in to much termoil for someone with little experience to get anything done and clean up the mess that George Bush has left us. Remember it was a CLINTON that cleaned up the last BUSH MESS!
Did you get your begging email from John Edwards yet? All of my Democrat friends did. Within 2 hours of the big endorsement tonight. No small feat.
What do we all have in common? We're all on the DNC mailing list.
It's already out on the blogs:
http://supergram.blogspot.com/2008/05/did-edwards-sell-out-for-data-base.html
So... is it legal for Edwards to use that list for requests to his charity on his campaign stationery? "Click here to unsubscribe from email sent by John Edwards for President." was at the bottom of his email.
And I'm not a subscriber on his website... never received an email from him before.
Did Edwards sell out for a mailing list? I am outraged.
This only moves O'Bama further to the left in an election where centrist, and even fairly liberal Democrats seeking a bit more of a grasp on the way that the world really works in their leader can get most of what they want from McCain.
I don't think that this helps his unelectability quotient at all.
I am greatly disappointed by the democratic party and the nomination process. I am and will be rooting for Hillary till the end and am very proud of how she has handled this race. Sure, she made a few mistakes. But the main reason why she is not winning is negative press propaganda and the fact that women are clearly not viewed as equals in this country. Dare a woman run as president or some other power position, out goes all the credentials on her portfolio and all the focus goes on her sexuality.
As for the democratic party, they have done wonders nominating a candidate in the past two elections. They seem to be trying the same stunt again.
We'll see how far Obama goes when it comes to running against Mc Cain. if Hillary's campaign is hurting him, that will really make him bleed.
Republicans are supporting Hillary as they know it will be viewed as a negative by democrats, so the people buying into that one are just plain stupid.
Obama has won the battle and the democrates will lose the war in november.
In Britain September 1938 , we had our version of Barack Obama arrive at Heston Airfield waving a paper signed by Hitler. Our man was Neville 'peace for our time' Chamberlain. We all remember what happened after that!
Edwards was John Kerry’s vice-presidential running mate in 2004, and his populist pitch got the team absolutely nowhere. Meanwhile the Bushies were downright gleeful in their mockery of Kerry’s windsurfing and Edwards’ $400 haircut. The trial lawyer may be the son of a mill worker, but today he’s right up there among the elites with the Obamas.
So one has to ask just how the failed populist candidate’s endorsement can be expected to help Obama attract working class voters.
Throughout her campaign, Hillary Clinton has demonstrated the rare ability to empathize with people of all stations in life. She is equally at home speaking at an Ivy League college, addressing women’s rights in Beijing, and listening to the story of a wife and mother in a village square in West Virginia.
And I can guarantee you, Hillary has better sense than to say to a male factory worker or male reporter, “hold on there a second, sweetie.”
of course it will, because our country is full of sheep flocking in the direction the media steers them - the media is too afraid to criticize Obama - just keep dumping on Hil media - right, i mean it's easy - you have already done it for a decade so why stop now. Hilary might not be the most likably person - but she has more proven experience and expertise in domestic and international politics - I am sure that if Obama (who is great - just green) wins - in another three years, I will be reading articles about how we should not have voted him in (similar to Bush's time in office). Come on Americans - do your research and vote for who is the BEST person in office - not the most likable, handsome, politically correct -
Jesus christ people. Is this a Boston.com message board or is our city's level of intelligence hyped up? Here are some of the points that I find particularly ignorant:
1) The democratic party is sexist because Edwards (a male) endorsed Obama (another male, who happens to be winning)??
2) Vote McCain over Obama because your candidate didn't win: Yeah, real smart one there. People who say this are a bunch of petulant man/women-children. Obama and Clinton have pretty much the same policies, and McCain's are a stark contrast. Plus, If McCain wins, he will probably get to appoint at least 2 supreme court justices. He does that, and Roe v. Wade is out the window. You want to take that chance because Hillary doesn't win? Right. Good one.
3) Obama will lose in the General Election: You people haven't been paying much attention to the recent troubles of the Republican party. They lost three seats in Congress over the last two months in heavy Republican districts. If they can't win their own districts, they aren't going to take the White House.
4) The Math Doesn't Work for Either Candidate: So you're telling me that it is mathematically impossible for either candidate to win the majority of delegates? Last time I checked, there were 189 pledged delegates and 237 superdelegates left to be awarded. Obama needs 137 delegates and Hillary needs 308 to clinch the nomination. So yes, the math DOES work, if you really think hard about it.
This is Boston people. We all come from the region of the country that put our heads together and started the war for Independence. We have some of the best colleges and universities in the world, and our city is full of extremely bright people It sure is hard to see that by looking at this message board.
This should help him in all 57 states......sweetie
This is no surprise. Edwards is a politican first and he goes whichever the wind is blowing. He couldn't carry his own state in 2004 and won't this time either. As a democrat since 1972, I have seen my party taken over by people on the left instead of from the middle except in 1992 and 96. I have worked with Bushies for 6 of the last 8 years and I can tell the Obamites will not be any different. I have grown so cynical of the process and what's ahead of us. Folks, there is no money. Taxes will be raised. Our enemies will strike us. Our military is old and worn out and needs to be upgraded. We will continue to import oil at high prices but let's go ahead and eliminate poverty here and allow even more immigration and let's ensure everyone has a free ride at middle class expense.
John Edwards??? I love his psychic show where he talks to the dead.
His endorsement is insignificant. Obama is still unqualified and unelectable and no endorsement is capable of changing that reality.
I'm not surprised. It's the way the race has gone. Obama has gotten the popular vote and will gee the nomination. Unfortunately, his resume doesn’t compare with Clinton’s. In this situation, that’s what we need, someone with experience. I wonder whom he'll nominate for VP: John Edwards? How dull, this could even make me vote for McCain, as much as it pains me.
I am very disappointed in John Edwards. I really think he should have waited til the primaries were over before making his endorsement, especially since he had said that was what he was going to do. I don't really see the point of it anyway, since he will not really be influencing the remaining primaries.
And regarding his choice of endorsee, he must not have really thought this through. Hillary's platform is more in line with his own, and he has said that he appreciates her experience against a less experienced candidate with a flawed health care policy plan. Hillary Clinton has won all of the big blue states and has won and done really well in important states that could very easily and likely go to McCain in the Fall if Hillary is not the nominee.
Is there something of political expediency about this endorsement now? I'm sure Edwards could play a big role in either administration. What has he been promised for this?
He has lost a lot of respect from many people for doing this, certainly from me.
A loser politician, who couldn't beat George Bush, who cares...
If some people prefer Hillary Clinton, fine. But can we please at the very least put an end to this fiction that she has 35 years of relevant experience? 22 years of that "experience" consisted of little more than being married to a public official (Bill Clinton was attorney general of Arkansas for 2 years, governor for a total of 12 years, and president for 8 years). If we're going to count that, then Laura Bush has a lot of experience, too.
But when it comes to experience in elected office, Obama has a total of 11 years experience. Clinton has 7. And if you take a close look at what each has done as a U.S. Senator, Obama has made far better use of his time.
I don't understand why American citizens still considering Hillary Clinton for president of this great country. She has done nothing but to fulfill her own interest. including but not less that to forget and defend her husband on the Monica Lewinsky affair. Shame on her self.....She would say and do or make situations to her own design and interest with total disregard to honesty.
I totally agree with the comment from # 35.
Hillary will engineering 2 interceptions in the 4th quarter and the overtime
come out victories.
Sorry, but Hillary is more a part of the "old boys" network than Obama. Obama wasn't even around when most of those boys were causing a ruckus in the 60s. That's the old boys network. Obama represents the future of the part, Clinton represents the past.
I don't understand how her supporters don't recognize this. It's time to MOVE ON already and quit fighting the battles of the 60s and 70s.
I'd rather take my chances voting for a candidate with less experience than go for the old, tired and used up ideas and approach to politics. I think we need a younger, less experienced politician to get a breath of fresh air in Washington.
For Hillary supporters who would jump ship to McCain, why? Thats crazy.
Unfortunately, the United States is not prepared for a woman to take charge as the President. The following is quoted from www.cnn.com:
'Edwards was concerned that the Clinton storyline -- that Obama can't win white, working-class voters -- was becoming too damaging to Obama and the party, aides said.'
The headlines could have just as easily said -
"Edwards was concerned that the Obama storyline - that Hillary can't win black
voters, as well as men voters - was becoming too damaging to HIllary and the party, aides said.
Hillary will engineering 2 interceptions in the 4th quarter and the overtime
come out victories.
