Edwards pours cold water on veep talk

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 16, 2008 10:00 AM

When John Edwards and Barack Obama appeared on stage together Wednesday night in Michigan, some pundits and Democrats wondered aloud whether they were seeing the Democratic ticket.

But today, Edwards seemed to rule out a sequel of his 2004 vice presidential run.

"No, no, no, won't happen," he said on NBC's "Today" show.

Pressed further, he replied, "It is not something I'm interested in."

Asked about whether he has talked to Obama about a job in his administration, Edwards said "only in the abstract way" and refused to say whether he was interested in being attorney general.

The former North Carolina senator's belated blessing of Obama has paid dividends in other endorsements and in at least seven delegates formerly pledged to Edwards moving over to Obama.

  1. I think the best thing for the Dems would be for Barack and Edwards to wrestle Hillary and Mcain in a cage match.

  1. Yes! I would totally pledge my vote to the winner of that!

Finally, a shred of sanity returns to the comment-o-sphere

  1. Gee, and so many "pundits" were squawking yesterday about some kind of deal, as if they knew insider information.

  1. I want him for attorney general so he can do his thing with the corporations and perhaps the government agencies that aren't fulfilling their mission wisely, such as the FDA for one. Why is the FDA so mean to botanical medicine and so kissy face with the pharmaceuticals that are hurting people? Why why why?

  1. BECAUSE... he knows Obama cannot win in November, and putting his name in as VP would make him a 2 time loser!

  1. Well, looks like the party elders put a gun to John's head to stand with Obama in that staged endorsement, just to put a damper on Hillary's landslide. If Edwards won't stand with Obama on the ticket, it means only one thing: he's waiting for 2012. And that means he's not a "believer" after all. Obama supporters, take note.

  1. It's not something I'm interested in... UNLESS IT'S WITH HILLARY who will be the Democratic candidate and our next President.

Bet me. His endorsement of Obama? Not what it's cracked up to be in the MSM. He may have endorsed for convenience's sake like the majority of Obama's superdelegates, but Edwards knows above all others how those superdelegates will REALLY vote once the spotlight is off and they're behind the curtain and NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW HOW THEY VOTED.

Called "the Bradley effect". Look it up.

  1. While I respect John Edwards, he did say on Monday of this week he was not ready to endorse anyone and then endorse immediately after the WV massacre? (Yeah, it was that bad)

If this doesn't scream suck-up, I don't know what else would.

  1. Why are people still referring to West Virginia?

    lmao

One state chock full of potential klan members isn't going to stop the movement of change sweeping the country.

  1. Edwards does not take lobbyist money; yet remained oddly quiet as Clinton told her special interest lies to citizens who oddly believed her. I am glad he does not want a VP due to that, but nice to see him endorse the right Democrat. He probably could enhance an Obama ticket; but it seems to me a candidate (and Party) that truly cared about citizens would not be behind someone who lies as much as Hillary and Bill. Despite all the rhetoric, much of Obama's support comes from the pro-peace, anti-Iraq debacle. That we are seriously overextended $$$wise and lack troops, Bush, Cheney, McCain, Clinton and the rest wanting to take us into Iran, shows poor judgment. I believe Edwards feels likewise, as does Gravel, Kucinich and Obama. Do not know about the rest of them.
