Fiesta beats caucus in Guam

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor May 2, 2008 02:17 PM

One of our favorite facts about the Democratic nomination race so far:

One village in Guam, whose caucus begins at 8 p.m. EDT today and ends early Saturday, was allowed to vote a week early so as not to conflict with a big festival.

"It went pretty smoothly. We're just glad that it's over," Joe Chargualaf, chairman of the Inarajan's Democratic nominating committee, told National Public Radio last Saturday.

Chargualaf said the fiesta, which honors the village's patron saint, Saint Joseph, is a big deal in the mostly Catholic village of 1,800 people. "It's almost like a carnival," he said.

The results of the caucusing in Inarajan is being kept under wraps until Saturday. Four pledged delegates are at stake in the caucus, with 3,000 Democrats projected to take part.
